Here on HHI for spring break, and I've been trying different cafes each day. Today it was Watusi. Let me just say - the best latte I've had on the island all week! I tried the Sand Dollar latte, it was so good. 10/10. We were seated quickly, and they have a nice indoor dining area, and a lovely outside patio. Service was very quick, as we also ordered breakfast. I had their omelet with hashbrowns and toast. Nice portion sizes, and very good! Best of all was the price. Very reasonable. This place goes on our list of regular stops on HHI. Give it a try! read more

This place was a complete disappointment. We walked in around 10:00 a.m. and although it was somewhat crowded, there were still several open tables. Somehow, we still waited 35 minutes just to be seated. After finally sitting down, we ordered immediately and then waited over 40 more minutes for food that wasn't even hot. To make matters worse, two of the orders were wrong. The pancakes came out with no syrup, and our server was basically nonexistent, only showing up twice in an hour, so we had to get up and get it ourselves. The poached eggs on the fourth meal were severely undercooked and practically raw. What made the experience even worse was having two young children with us who were completely melting down by the end because everything took so long. A restaurant should know better than to leave families sitting that long with no urgency, no communication, and no follow-up. What should have been a simple breakfast turned into a two-hour waste of time with bad service, poorly prepared food, and zero attention to detail. There is no excuse for this level of incompetence. I would absolutely not recommend this place. read more

Food is okay, not a good environment for studying or working. I came one day to study while on vacation and was rushed out despite ordering food and coffee and tipping well. I came a second day was asked to leave despite taking up only a small table in the corner on a non-busy morning. I ordered food and was quietly studying. Ultimately okay if you want overpriced tourist trap food. Would not recommend for relaxed studying/work vibes. read more

If you have food allergies or intolerances this is a great place to eat. Open for breakfast, brunch, and lunch with great selections! We tried the snow pea and avacado toast and an omelet. Others at our table had pancakes (they were huge and tasty), gluten free Belgian waffles (thick which is hard when doing gluten free) and the breakfast burrito with hash browns. Waited for an hour. We were told 30 minutes. Went next door shopping while we waited. Never got a call. Went back to check-in. Were told we were called and we should have stayed closer and we were to check back in after 30 minutes. Weren't told that from the start. Guessing they took the number down wrong. Such a cool breakfast place/coffee bar! We had no idea that this little cafe had a coffee bar in it, and I was pleasantly surprised. We were up early and decided to take our bikes to get some breakfast. It was a Saturday morning, so we thought everything would be packed. We did come across some packed restaurants and that's what made us stop in Watusi. When we walked in, you could either go to the hostess stand or go to the coffee bar and gift shop area. We got a table for two in the main dining room because we wanted a good amount of food. Service was ok. It took our service a couple minutes to come greet us, and service was slow throughout. I went to the coffee bar to get my coffee, and I'm so glad I did. I got the latte with the chocolate blend. It was so good and to me, the best coffee around. To eat, I got GF toast with sausage links. There were only two sausage links, and the number wasn't listed on the menu. The food was good. We recently visited this coffee shop and were excited to try it based on the atmosphere and menu. Unfortunately, our experience fell short of expectations. We ordered a warmed pastry, but it was served cold in the middle, which was disappointing. The coffee also had a noticeably sour taste that wasn't to our liking. The biggest issue was the customer service. When it came time to pay, we weren't sure where checkout was located. Rather than helping guide us, the employee seemed irritated and spoke to us as though we should have already known the process. A little patience and friendliness would have gone a long way. That said, everyone has off days, and we're hopeful this was an isolated experience. The shop has potential, but there are definitely some areas that could be improved to create a more welcoming experience for customers. read more

I love this place. It's cozy at classy. The Belgian waffle is epic. Someone in our party always gets a Benedict of some sort. Today it was smoked salmon. The pancakes are excellent, they are really good about cooking things to your specific needs. Very friendly staff, lots of really good smoothies and yogurt-based drinks. They have a little gift shop inside the restaurant, but they just expanded and have one at Petals next door. There's inside dining as well as outside on the patio. If you eat inside, it can be quite cold in there so heads up. :) read more

I had never had a bad meal at Watusi Cafe. They have an excellent grasp on their food. Everything is fresh and you don't feel heavy or weighed down afterwards. I was really in the mood for sausage gravy in biscuits.. I was persuaded by the special which was a meat lovers benedict that had sausage gravy atop a couple poached eggs and some potato pancakes. This was a $18 special and I felt a little swindled. The "meat lovers" was nothing more than a couple thin slices of black forest deli ham, the potatoes had a literal dusting of bacon bits spread throughout them and the sausage gravy had, well, sausage as it should. There was nothing meat lovers about this thing-- that said, it was good and I enjoyed it overall. The space is nice, we sat outside and the service was friendly and attentive. The coffee is half-decent, and the latte my wife got here was tasty. I great breakfast spot, I would recommend trying it out, maybe just steer clear of the specials and go with something you can find a review on. read more

Very cute restaurant and store. Nice variety of coffees and teas with some quick grab food items. We didn't sit down for the restaurant offerings but the place seemed popular. Friendly staff with also a cute beach-themed store with a mix of branded items and cute games and gifts, surprisingly a lot of nice children's books. We had the drip coffee and mocha latte paired with the yogurt parfait to go and the bacon cheese egg cups. I took a star away for heating these in a microwave as they turned out rubbery but the ingredients were still nice and better than the Starbucks egg cups! Support local! read more

I didn't know much about this place before coming in. It was very good. I found the menu to be oddly balanced between vegan / gf or heavy meaty but not simply vegetarian or healthy lighter fare. Putting that aside I got the smoke salmon Benedict and it was awesome. Oddly came with no sides but ok. The NY just bagels was also perfection. I won't be running back mostly because of the menu options but I can say it was tasty. The service was nice and the interior was surprisingly elegant. read more

We found Watusi a few years ago and keep coming back again and again. Gluten free options aplenty for my wife. Benedicts are awesome as are the hash options. Great selection of coffees and teas. Service was horrible. Food was amazing. I declined to go to the Plantation Cafe down the street and decided while visiting Hilton Head I'd go here. I was seated and not greeted or introduced to my server for 15 minutes and I still don't know his name. After 15 minutes a young man comes by and puts a cup of water on my table and says I'll be back and he does 5 to 10 min later. I ordered all my food and it arrived hot and delicious. I ordered take out and some guy just dropped it off at the table no bag no plastic wear no syrup nothing. At this point I just got up and got what I needed paid and left!! They totally cater to a certain type of individuals and I wasn't that person and I left feeling down. We ordered mimosas that had the perfect ratio of juice to bubbly. I ordered the best Belgian waffle, cheese grits, super delish, and yummy, chicken applewood sausage at Watusi Cafe. My friend order the French toast and she loved it! This restaurant is a must try! Ambiance is great! We really enjoyed our breakfast at Watusi Café. some of the items that we had that were delicious were the vegan Mediterranean hash, the omelettes, the red chorizo, hash, and the pancakes. My kids also loved the strawberry delight and pink monkey smoothies. Wish we had found this restaurant earlier in our trip. We would have definitely been back every day. I was given a gift certificate, so took some friends to WATUSI this morning for brunch. The food was very good, EXCEPT for my Salmon Benedict. The poached eggs were mostly raw; the whites were slimey and very runny. The English muffin was soggy and cold. I attempted to eat my food, but truly couldn't. The eggs were basically raw! After I tasted it, I decided to send my dish back. When I told my server I couldn't eat it, she said, " O K ???" ...like my statement was a question. NO apology. She then told me she couldn't take it off my bill because I'd attempted to eat it. She insisted I needed to speak to the Manager. The manager came over and said, "When you started to eat the dish, you accepted it." She then refused to take it off the bill! I insisted. THEN she said, "THIS is HOW we cook our poached eggs! NEXT time order them well done." Begrudgingly, she removed it from our tab with absolutely NO apology. Only blame on my end. Seriously?! I have two granddaughters who work for Serge Restaurants and THEY are trained well in customer service!! Honestly, this NEVER would've happened in one of their restaurants. WATUSI not only served me an inedible dish, they tried to make me feel guilty for complaining. The management talked down to me, and tried to make me feel like this was somehow my fault! It wasn't. So patrons, order carefully! Be VERY specific how you want your eggs cooked, or they too just MAY arrive w/the whites slimey and undercooked. Apparently, both the manager AND the waitress were NOT properly trained in customer service. I'll NOT be back to this restaurant because of how this matter was handled. The Waitress AND Management at Watusi made me feel like this ridiculously undercooked food was my fault! Even the manager was rude and unapologetic. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and it wasn't even from the undercooked eggs. :( ps - A graphic on WATUSI'S front window clearly says "Wi-Fi" is available. We asked the waitress nicely for the password, and without apology, she refused us. So, if you need Wi-Fi best to dine somewhere else. lol read more

Okay so I have an egg and a dairy allergy and this place had some of the best vegan stuffed French toast ever. My partner loved his breakfast that had no dietary restrictions and I think this place was actually one of the best places in Hilton head that had options for us both. We actually came back not once but twice in the four days we were there visiting my parents' house this winter and will be making multiple excursions every winter hereafter. We got there around probably 8:30AM on a Thursday. I assume the previous reviews were talking about weekends, because it was basically a ghost town. We were finished with our entire meal before another party was seated after us LOL. This is all fine and dandy, but heads up for future visitors: I don't think you need to rush here unless it's a Saturday or Sunday. The restaurant itself is super cute. The dining area and bar are on one side with the marketplace and coffee bar on another. The decor and styling reminds me of a cozy hotel. They also played classical/instrumental covers of popular songs the entire time. So that kept us entertained. Overall this is a unique and yummy spot on HHI, and we'd happily come back again--just not so bright and early. read more

My husband and I have vacationed on Hilton Head Island over many years and have tried numerous places for breakfast, but our experience at Watusi was different. We cooled down from an already hot morning with a delicious smoothie and looked around the "country store while we waited for our table. We ate a delicious hash and an egg dishes from their variety of "southern" menu items and other highly rated regular breakfasts. We were pleased with the taste and the presentation; down to the bamboo straws for our water glasses. Four of us eat breakfast here on a nice fall morning. We had about a 10 minute wait before a table was ready. Once seated we ordered because had reviewed the menu during our wait. Took about 10 minutes to get our breakfast. I ordered eggs your way. Fried eggs with sausage and hash browns. My dish was really good. My wife ordered the avocado toast with fried egg. She said it was very good. One person ordered the hash. He also added avocado toast. The hash was chunky and tasty. The last order was three egg omelette. Only complaint was the omelette was cold. We were on our way to the airport when we stopped at Watusi Café for breakfast. The staff was pleasant and accommodating. The menu was a variety of eggs, omelettes, and various breakfast items. Used to love to come here. The atmosphere and service has changed. Sitting here now and frustrated. Asked to sit at a table and we told we have to take a booth to even out customers for servers. That works For the cafe but no so much for customers. we are the reason the cafe can stay open. Sitting in the back of the cafe is noisy, lots of loud talking and lots of kids. I ordered the potato hash Benedict which was perfect since I didn't want to have the English muffin anyways. It came loaded with spinach, some thin slices of ham and beautifully cooked poached eggs. The potatoes were even a little crispy. For a drink, I ordered a matcha latte. The portion size of this latte was MASSIVE. While the drink was good, I really couldn't drink so much.
