To cut to the chase...their world famous ribs are mostly that ...bones. Very little meat and what meat that was on the bone was so over cooked, it was almost non existent. A lot of hype, but not much to them unless you like eating bones. I have traveled to Austin several times for work and always try to make it out to the County Line. The BBQ is top notch. My Austin friends agree, so it's not just an out-of-towner kind of thing. They promote an extra cost special bread they make there. I've tried it twice, but don't care for it. A little lacking in taste for me, but obviously it has a following among the regulars or they wouldn't still be serving it. I'll go back again and again for the meat though. I dunno what everyone's talking about, after trying this place once it became my all time fave BBQ spot. I'm definitely bringing family and friends here to fall in love with Texas. Portions for the combo plate are hearty and can be shared. Billy, our server, was extra attentive and nice. We got our seating immediately next to the lake, and the decor was kitschy wonderful, and the hot food came out in 2 minutes---in which Billy actually apologized for the delay. My first visit to this restaurant. The view from the patio was beautiful! I ordered sliced Beef and Pork Rib plate with Potato Salad and and Mac and Cheese. The Ribs and sliced Beef were very tender and yummy. The Potato Salad was beyond good....it needed a little Relish...but It was the best I have had at a restaurant. I went to The County Line's original location in an old speakeasy, now known throughout Austin as The County Line on the Hill; had a great meal and a great time ! On a warm April evening, a seat on the outside deck yields a *super* view of the hill country. Restaurant staffers were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. One of our party did not eat red meat, but there was plenty of "other" to choose from. I enjoyed a mix of beef brisket and peppered turkey breast. If a person leaves County Line hungry, it's their own fault !! Definitely four stars. read more

Been eating at both County Line on the Hill and County Line on the lake for years (on the hill since the 70s)It used to be a treat to go there but not lately. Last two times I went to County Line on the Hill, the pork ribs and chicken was over cooked and dry. Still like the potato salad. Their Margaritas don't give me a buzz and not as good as Maudies. The service at this location is horrible. The last two times, we didn't learn the first time, we have had either a horrible wait staff, or sat for over an hour waiting for our meal. While waiting, they blamed the delay on the kid meal cheese burger. Didn't realize it took an hour to cook a burger. When the food came out, everything was cold. Today, the waitress was beyond rude. She spilled tea all over our table while pouring a refill. All she said was wrong hole and laughed cause the ice caused the tea to spill everywhere. We thought when she left that she would be coming back to clean it all up. Nope, she didn't even offer. We had to clean it all up ourselves. At the end of the meal, she asked if we were going to be on one ticket. We asked her to slipt the bill and she sighed....then said well, it's going to take a while to do that. Why offer if you don't want to do it?? She obviously hates her job. We will not be returning to this location. Go for the view not the food or service. One of our party of 4 can't see well in the dark so we asked to sit by the window. We were told we could not and had to sit out side in the heat. Sever was slow, brought the wrong side took 15 minutes to replace the Mac and cheese side with the ordered potato salad. Meat was very dry, I love the view and wanted to try it a second time first time was a year ago and it has not improved. Be careful they will ask you if you want bread, you are thinking wow very responsible if you did want it why bring it and waste it but no if you say yes they will bring it and charge you $1.00 a slice. $4.00 for 4 slices of bread. The ribs here are HUGE- the rib platter looks like something straight out of the Flintstones, and there's a really cool riverside back patio with tons of turtles and carp to feed and watch. The cobbler ala mode was very good too- the peach and the blackberry. However the time there wasn't perfect. 2 of our table ordered the salmon plate, but received chicken at first. After a very long (most meals half done) wait, one of our guests told our server to just forget about the salmon, but they brought it out anyway and comped our table on the salmon dishes (which was a very nice gesture!). We had to ask multiple times for bread and drink refills; it was very crowded so maybe they just need more staff. Maybe this is great for Austin bbq without the outrageous wait time some Austin bbq places can have, but Ive has better in my small town. read more

My family visited our friends in Austin and they recommended to eat here. We were here on 12/31/2015 and it was a pretty great experience and a good way to end the year. Service: 4 out 5 stars: Our waiter was very polite and helpful and she did everything that was expected of her. The food came out moderately fast, although that may have only been because we were here on New Years Eve and there were not many diners. Food: 3.5 out of 5 stars. The bread is sweet, and both the whole grain and white bread taste fantastic. I got vegetable kabobs and they were a bit lacking in flavor, but nothing salt and pepper couldn't fix. The fried okra was also not very flavorful, but the texture was okay. The meat was really good, especially the turkey. All of the meat has a smoky flavor and is incredibly tender, but not to the point of falling apart. The prices are also very reasonable. All in all, it was a solid experience and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a good BBQ experience in Austin. read more

When I used to visit this place back in the early 2000's while visiting Austin for work this place was outstanding. Now that I live here, it is obvious it's quality has declined. It is hit and miss. I keep trying it again hoping it will be what it once was but it is apparent it is a shadow of it's former self. Even the homemade bread does not have the talent it used. I love this place and its close to home, but I can't give it more stars. What's great and will keep me coming is the view and the drinks. The food has been inconsistent, so I'll just learn what to get and what not to get. The first time we came, for dinner, the ribs were falling off the bone and every piece of meat was moist and delicious. The second time we came, for lunch, the ribs were a little dry but everything else was great. Last night, we went for dinner and the ribs were a little dry and some parts burnt. Everything was good The County Line is great. Austin has two locations. The County Line on the Hill is far and away the better of the two. The view of hill country is fantastic and the menu is much better (they are similar, both featuring the same main dishes, but this location has more selections). The coleslaw is amazing and you should automatically pick it as a side. I'll admit that I have never ordered anything other than baby back ribs because they are the best anywhere around. The BBQ sauce on the pork ribs is much better than the sauce for the beef. I have tried the chicken here and can highly recommend that as well. As some other reviewers have written, the fresh made wheat bread is really great topped with some honey and butter. If you're looking for a sports bar, this isn't the restaurant for you. It you want some fantastic baby back ribs, go to The County Line as soon ad possible. read more

Took a customer there for lunch this past week. We both got the three meat plate and ordered the homemade bread with two drinks. The portions were very small and the chicken was mostly bone. To top it off the cost was $49 without tip. The portion sizes were small, bbq was avg with the sides being the best of the meal (potato salad and beans) and the cost did not justify the meal. My mom visited from the East Coast and I took her here. Biggest mistake ever. I don't normally write reviews, but I can't help writing one for this place. It was around 3pm, and there were maybe 4 other groups of people in the restaurant. Not busy at all. The waitress took our order and then disappeared. We waited 30 MINUTES with no waitress in sight and was finally able to flag down another waitress who happened to be passing by. We asked whether it normally takes that long for the food to come out and she went to grab our waitress. Our waitress comes by and all she says is that the kitchen is backed up with a large to-go order and offers us some bread. If there's a "large to go order", you'd think that she would've dropped by 15 min prior and warned us in the least. She finally brings the food out (it's been 40 MIN since we ordered now) and... 1. The brisket was dry and rubbery like it was boiled, cut up, and sitting there for hours. 2. The beef ribs were BIG. Just the bones were big. There wasn't that much meat and it was also VERY dry like it was cooked days prior. 3. The mac n cheese was bland, the garlic mashed potatoes were drenched in butter, and the coleslaw was just so-so. I feel like our waitress rushed the cooks after we complained and they just gave us whatever leftovers they had sitting there. The only thing that was good here was the bread. read more

Well, I can't speak for their barbecue, as I don't eat meat. I was saddened to see that, unlike many other barbecue places, they don't have a plate of sides available as an option on their menu, since that's usually a good option for vegetarians. They have baked potatoes, but don't tell you what toppings they have. I ended up with a garden salad, not very exciting. The waiter was at the table literally every 5 minutes asking us how things were going, and it was a little irritating. He had done his job properly, we had our food and beverages, so there was no need to hover. I'm pretty sure I won't be back, even for barbecue-loving out of town visitors. read more

Our High School Choir had traveled to the Austin area and needed to find a nice place to have dinner for 75 people. It's not an easy task to find a place in Austin that will host that many people for dinner. However, the event coordinator, Tayler Herrington, made the entire evening one of the most memorable trip outings we have had so far! She set the room up perfectly for our large group, placed the giant jenga and corn hole games on the private patio's, she even set up the most AMAZING Smore's bar for the students - they had a blast! They served the food family style and it was delicious. The kid's loved getting all the snapchat and instagram pictures they wanted with the amazing sunset view of the hill country on the back patio. Thanks Taylor for working with us and for making the evening so much fun for our choir group! They want to come back next year. :) read more

It wasn't the best BBQ ever, but I did still enjoy the meal. It was a Friday night and there was a bit of a wait. So Justin and I didn't waste time and got margaritas at the bar. I got the frozen variety and had to endure some major brain freeze. We were seated shortly after we finished our drinks and went for the chicken chipotle poppers, ribs, extra moist brisket and sausage! Long story short... Poppers were perfect, extremely yummy! Not for the faint of heart but not so spicy that you can't taste anything anymore. Baby Back Ribs were overcooked. Don't know what happened there - I was really expecting better. It wasn't tender or juicy, just the opposite. It was a struggle to fork off any meat off the bone. It had this semi-impenetrable meat wall on it. Plus it wasn't warm, it came out practically room temperature. Probably should have sent it back, but Justin wouldn't stop eating it before the server came to check on us. I know extra moist Brisket is really bad for you, but my god, it's just so tasty! I like the BBQ sauce they have for the brisket and sausage. It's just mildly tangy and not too sweet. I'm not a big fan of sausage but it was good stuff. Taut and crispy outside, juicy (kinda greasy) inside. Nothing to complain about service wise. Oh I can't forget, green beans were the veg of the day. It's really amazing how ham makes everything taste just a little bit better... I'd go again, but would definitely send back anything below par. As one of the better known barbeque places in Austin, I was slightly disappointed by the food. It is never a good sign when you go to a barbeque place and your favorite thing is the potato salad. I found the meat to be cooked fairly well; however was not a big fan of the cut of brisket and the sauce. Compared to other places, the flavor did not match up. Well after my initial review, 3 days later I was contacted by Ms. Dee Dee Halsey GM who apologized for the terrible service, etc. I had in my last visit. It is very apparent that she really cares about what people have to say online and takes great pride in the quality of the service and of the food at County Line. This was evidenced in the emails we sent back and forth to each other. Ms. Halsey took pretty amazing steps to make me from an unhappy customer with a complaint to a very happy customer once again. She went above and beyond to make me smile again, THANKS Ms. Halsey. Ms. Halsey brings a very caring dedication to the County Line which should be emulated by all restaurant managers across the U.S. It is for that reason that I would 100% give County Line another shot at my business. The County Line on the hill is really good BBQ. For a nice dinner with my parents, aunt, and uncle the County Line served us better than average. We did not have a fast paced hurried meal, nor was it a never ending sit down type. It was perfectly balanced between waiting (no wait), sitting down, ordering, receiving our complimentary (and very tasty) house bread and butter, receiving our meals, and finally our desert. Know that this is not inexpensive BBQ, but for BBQ it offers a nice and very tasty meal with spectacular views. It is worth paying 10-15 dollars a plate (that are hardly able to be finished if you were starving). All of us, besides my dad ordered the "lighter combo" that come with your choice of two meats and two sides. For the meat...I rolled with a huge beef rib that was off my plate and 1/4 of bbq chicken. Though both were unbelievably tasty, the rib was almost half fat (one of the only reasons I have this rated as 4 star). For a place that prides itself on their legendary beef ribs, better cuts on their ribs would be nice. The chicken was outstanding, juicy, delicious, soft and tender! All the others in my party really enjoyed their large portions of sausage, smoked ham, smoked turkey, and brisket. The brisket seemed to be really enjoyed out of the other meats. For sides, the red-skinned garlic mashed potatoes and side of the day (which was sweet corn) were both cooked and prepared perfectly. Nothing needed any seasoning and just as the corn was juicy and sweet, the mashed potatoes came as a beautiful heap of creamy and tasty goodness! MMMM Although we did not order it this time, in the past, the homemade bread has been ordered and it is fabulous. Hands-down it wins on loaf of bread in Austin. But, it is hard to spend that extra money when the house bread is nice, warm, and fluffy as well. For desert, get the homemade bread pudding with jack daniels sauce! It is also huge (a block of bread pudding about 6 x 6 x 3 inches) and covered with four giant scoops of their homemade vanilla ice cream...ungodly it was and it easily fed all 5 of us! By the end we were all at least contently full, happy, and enjoying the evening. The service is also something to mention, as our waiter proved to not only do normal tasks, but talk to us when appropriate and let us understand how the recipes were homemade recipes...very nice and down to earth. read more

So after a bad experience at Cannoli Joe's, I wanted to see how the "company's" other venues were going. I hadn't been to County Line in about 3-4 years. I see a pattern here, again the quality of the food was AWFUL! Service was semi poor. Beans were obviously dry on top, Bread which should have been FRESH! - isn't that what you're known for?- was underdone, and definitely not fresh... there were three pulled pork sandwiches at our table, the pork was not hot, and seemed like it just came out of a steamed bag.
