The brisket was as tender as it could be, melting in my mouth. The sausage was tasty, and when both were garnished with their tasty BBQ sauce, I was in hog heaven, haha. For sides, I selected the Mac 'n Cheese and Mashed Potatoes, and they were served in healthy portions. I will say, I had lunch the next day with the leftover portions. So much goodness. Given the rating, I was surprised as how good this was! The prices are great, the portions are huge, and the menu has plenty of variety (you can even pick a yummy dessert like banana pudding as a side). It's served cafeteria style. You can tell why it's packed with families here - there is something for everyone and it's inexpensive. They also have a self-serve pickle bar. I got the kid's plate (lol) called the Pok-e-To plate ($12.50) and it was plenty. I picked the burnt ends as the protein, then the potato salad and baked potato casserole as the sides. This is my go-to barbecue restaurant. The barbecue is on point, and the sides are delicious. The staff are awesome!!! I am picky about my fried okra. I like it nearly charred, crunchy through and through. I told them how I wanted it cooked, and unlike many places, they cooked it PERFECTLY!!! I hope once their lease expires (not being renewed due to planned development on the property) that they find a new location in South Austin. Hadn't been to Pok e Jo's in a minute! I was pleasantly surprised... Ordered the two meat plate with brisket and pork ribs. Three pork ribs and while he was slicing I asked for burnt ends for the brisket. The ribs were tender and flavorful and the brisket was perfectly charred on the outside and moist & tender inside. I thought I was in BBQ heaven. For sides I chose the delicious Jalapeno Cornbread casserole (for the first time) and the Broccoli Cheese (very cheesy and not overcooked). I love BBQ so much. It always makes me happy to find a good BBQ place, especially when it is reasonably priced. My friend took me here while I was visiting her in Austin. We got there right when it opened and despite that, it was busy. I got the one meat meal with brisket, corn, and fries. All of them were DIVINE. The brisket was perfectly cooked and had a nice smoky texture to it. The house BBQ was amazing. I also got a sweet tea and it was super good. We took our food to go and it kept great during our 25-minute drive. The service was good and the restaurant was very nice. I'll have to try something else on their menu sometime! Admit it - we are spoiled. BBQ - especially BBQ in Central Texas - has been elevated to such great heights that grading BBQ has become unfairly skewed for long time establishments that have been consistently great at being good. Pok e Jo's is one such establishment. For decades now they have been delivering a consistent experience with some of the best sides in the game. The brisket is consistently good, the sausage is pretty great and the chicken is always on point - especially the dark meat. In this new COVID reality, I've made it a point to throw some of my humble business local restaurants whenever I can. When I get take-out, I try my best to ensure it's from a local joint. With that in mind, I offloaded the stress of Thanksgiving dinner to Poke e Jo's this year. Money well spent. The turkey was great and I don't really care for Turkey. There's a reason I only eat turkey once or twice a year but I will definitely eat Pok e Jo's smoked turkey year round. It is that good. I am also pretty indifferent to stuffing but this stuffing was legitimately good. The gravy was also great. The usually great green bean & potato casseroles were consistent with how great they usually are. All in all - an awesome holiday meal with minimal effort on my part. The prep & clean up easily justify the price and I'm planning on doing this every Thanksgiving from now until I'm under the dirt. If you're looking for foodie-grade, world beating BBQ - this isn't that. We are incredibly lucky to live an great city with the best BBQ in the world and there are places that have that. I gotta say, though: I will forever miss the hamburgers, beef ribs, and black bean pico. They switched to only Habanero Sauced Pulled Pork option several years back. So, I stopped eating BBQ at Poke Joe's since my favorite of theirs was their pulled pork before the change. I can get non-habanero pulled pork at every other BBQ place in Austin, but PokeJoe's pulled pork used to be so much better than all their competition. Over the last year, this Poke Joe's location allowed me to get non-sauced pulled pork very easily and I returned to them as my favorite BBQ joint again. Tonight, I got the old statement again stating they only offer Habanero Pulled Pork and I shouldn't expect to get non-habanero pulled pork again. So, again..I have to return to PokeJoe's competitors and miss out on PokeJoe's pulled pork. I got to say this location was hard to spot, good thing I saw the big Toy R' Us sign and kept following the road. Not the usual location I would go to but the food tasted the same as any other location. I've gone to a few Pok e Jo's in town and for whatever reason this location is always consistently the best of them. The staff here is always super pleasant and happy to have you in (when it's a little slower you might get them to crack a joke or two). Now, if you're one of those BBQ elitists - you might look down your nose, but hey let's be fair and recognize that you get some pretty good que here. Breakdown of stuff I've had: Brisket - you can go moist or lean - but if you go lean prepare for it to be drier. I like to get a little mix of both which they'll be happy to do for you Chicken - I haven't had it but my office mate swears it's good Turkey - smoke flavoring throughout, but not as moist as I would prefer Ribs - generally pretty good although I've gotten a few dry ones before. Sausage - always good Pot Pie - filled with some veggies and smoked turkey. Really do like this - especially with the light flaky pie crust on top. Sauces: Regular - it's smoky and pretty basic not really sweet. Spicy - has a little tang to it but not really hot Habanero Peach - this one has a kick to it depending on how those habanero's are cooperating! Mac 'n Cheese - it's good Green Bean Casserole - like this one too - goopy goodness Jalapeño cornbread - yes please Fried Okra - so good - this is the way to improve vegetables - batter and fry them Potato Salad - it's good but not amazing coleslaw - mayo based - pretty good broccoli salad - nice to see you being healthy banana pudding - just a little bit of 'merica cobbler - ditto the puddin' I'd say that you get some healthy portions here.
