I had the worst perm of my life with Margie, and reached out to the salon personally by email and was completely ignored. I've been consistently getting perms to make my 2a/2b wavy hair curly every 6 months or so since April 2023 and every perm before this one has not only lasted forever but also not overly damaging. Hair stylists regularly comment on how healthy my hair is. Every perm prior to this one has been at Empire Beauty School between Tucson and Cincinnati. And my experiences there were leaps and bounds more professional than my experience with Margie. After bragging to me about her 40 years of experience and being the perm specialist and telling me that I would have a "real professional experience with her," she proceeded to rush the entire appointment to the point I felt rushed out of the chair. Did not really ask me what I wanted, so I told her that I had gotten a bricklay perm in December and that before that I had gotten a spiral perm last May and would like to get a spiral perm again. She doesn't even know what a bricklay perm is, but she is the perm specialist? When I say I want a spiral perm, she says "ok but that will cost extra" and I say that's fine because I would prefer a spiral perm. she them goes to grab all the rods without even asking me how tight of a curl I do or don't want. I wanted a perm with grey and white rods but I never even got to tell her that before she did a perm with purple, grey, and white. First things that were red flags with this perm: she didn't wrap a single rod in a spiral perm wrap. she also had relatively large sections and not enough rods. I assumed that she had decided she couldn't do a spiral perm and now I was getting a traditional body wave, even though there had been no communication with me about it. By the time we put on the perm solution I noticed it was not as strong smelling as the spiral perm solution, which is generally more intense than typical body wave. When she put the developer on she said "now we wait 10 minutes and then you'll be done." there is not a single type of perm that develops in less than 15 minutes. Most are 20. But I assumed she's a perm specialist so maybe she knows better. By the time we washed my perm out and dried it, she didn't even use a diffuser on my hair and it was a frizzy mess that I hoped would get better once I washed it out after 48 hours. It did not. It's been about a month and it already looks like my last perm looked on month 6. The real kicker here is when I went to pay, she told me she had done the spiral perm for me after all. And I was genuinely confused because none of the rods were wrapped in a spiral wrap. So I was charged $100 and tipped 25% like I typically do for a bad body wave perm that she lied and said was a spiral perm. the entire appointment was less than 3 full hours and it's typical for a spiral perm wrap to take 4 hours. I had this perm touched up for some important interviews and I'm now spending more money to try to save my hair with bond building treatments because it's literally the worst perm of my life. I sent photos of my last spiral perm and compared it with my recent perm to the salon email asking for at least the money covering the extra cost of the spiral perm vs a regular body wave back and they completely ignored me. I do not recommend getting a perm here and certainly not from Margie if you want any agency in your perm experience. read more

I've gone here periodically over the last 4 years and had good experiences with a variety of people, including Gina, for cutting length off my straight hair. I called yesterday to schedule a cut, left a voicemail as it was likely their lunch hour, and received calls back a little while later from 2 different employees. I scheduled with Marjie who I called back first, then called back Gina who said she could take me earlier and that my appointment from the previous call was not in the system. I called back Marjie to inform her I had scheduled with Gina instead. Marjie became angry and told me Gina is "always stealing people's clients." I received the text pictured from Marjie 2 hours later, and the responses after I let her know she'd texted me by mistake. I loved coming to a Tucson institution with a local vibe- they used to be an Aveda salon. But after this lack of professionalism, I will be taking my business elsewhere going forward. read more

I love that the dogs are hanging out with you as you get your hair styled. Moreover, they use Aveda hair products, which are gentle to the hair. Just quaint and funky and fun. Appointment was canceled 30 minutes before I was set to arrive. Stylist (Gina) said she was ill, if that was the case I would have received word the night before or early morning. No one from the salon called and offered to reschedule or any assistance. I have been going to The Coyote Wore Sideburns for 20 years. I have never thought about going to anyone else because they are amazing! Have I used different hair sylists absolutely! I try to give a new stylist an opportunity to show their strengths and too have more confidence. I figure if it doesn't come out the way I like it it always grows back! I have been recently having my haircut and colored by Phoenix! She has really come into her own and she does amazing work! First of all, let me say when I go into the Coyote I always feel very comfortable and welcomed and relaxed. They are very inviting. They know their stuff. They listen to good music. They have a great sense of humor and they put up with me for gosh sakes!! I have gotten so many compliments every time I get a haircut there. A week after the worst haircut of my life, and I'm still asking myself everyday how this happened. I made an appointment wanting to support businesses that were using COVID-19 mitigation and requiring masks. I gave this business a chance, and when I called asked the person who answered that I needed a stylist for a cut that was experienced in Women's hair, particularly fun and edgy styles. I made an appointment for my 5 year old daughter as well who was wanting to cut her hair. On my way there, I had a conversation with my daughter about how it's fun to try new things with hair, and hair can always grow back. Boy did I eat those words! As an adult who has had most cuts, good and bad, I have to say that this one takes the cake for botched. I have a full head of dark hair, and wanted a long inverted bob. I brought multiple photos, but it was if she didn't see them and just started chopping. Gina, who was my stylist, "texturized" it so much in the back I now have parts of my scalp showing where the hair is 2 inches long, and then layers above it that are much longer. It's not texture, it's a hack job! It is so choppy and uneven and thinned. It's inverted, but not long at all. I can't even pull it back in a pony to go running, which was a specific ask as well. Of note, she took a couple of inches off of my daughter's long hair without issue, thank goodness. My partner's first words when I got home and he saw my hair were, "at least you didn't let her cut HER hair any shorter". I have never in my life cried over a bad haircut. But at nearly 40 years old, when I got home I got in the shower to get the tons of product she put in it out, and cried the whole shower. I didn't do it in front of my kids, because I still stand by the messaging of "it is just hair", but this is next level bad. I called to speak with the owner, realizing there really isn't a solution here but more to let her know, who suggested a corrective cut. However, there is barely hair there to work with to correct it! Shorter isn't an option, so I'm stuck with this awful cut until it just grows back out enough to have someone who listens and knows how to cut hair can correct course. Until then, I have to live with it, as a professional in the public who is often in the media. I most certainly will not be back to this business since I don't trust the judgement of anyone there at this point, sadly. I gave two stars only for COVID-19 mitigation and the friendliness of the stylists. Even Gina. She may have butchered my hair, but I really like her as a person. She was kind and funny. Went in for a perm. I wanted a 1940's style perm and provided a dozen example photos that show the size of curl I wanted. I explained what I do for wet sets in order to get the result I like and explained that I want a permanent curl to save time and effort on my part. I provided photos of my own hair styled how I like and showed photos of my own roller placement and size. I arrived with clean hair (no conditioner, washed twice). My stylist also used a clarifying shampoo before starting the perm. I had virgin hair. I asked the stylist if she could get comparable results to the pictures and she said yes. My stylist did a fast and loose roller job and asked me what kind of perm solution I wanted to use. Being that I didn't go to beauty school, I asked what the difference was and whether it would affect the end result. I reiterated that I wanted curls. She provided something described as gentle and natural and another described as old school. I chose the natural one, assuming that both were good enough, else why would this professional be offering them? 3 hours and $200 later, I had hair with a few more waves and a lot more crunch than it has naturally. Photos show what I asked for and what I got. My problem of spending so much time every day to get curls in my hair is not solved. I was given a full refund, but not before my stylist suggested we re-perm my hair with smaller rollers (tiny ones, 1/4" or so). I showed her a photo of the 1" rollers I use that give me nice vintage curls. I said I wanted curls, not an afro. She explained that there's no way to know how a perm will turn out. One would hope that curls would happen. The time before this, I went in for a trim and came out with 1 1/2" difference in length on either side of my hair. Not coming back here ever again. Ty was fantastic! She fit me in at the last minute on a Sunday. I had a haircut from another studio earlier in the day and it was not what I had asked for at all. I am not overly picky. This is only the 2nd haircut I have ever had to have redone. Anyway, just like with the last stylist, I showed Ty the pictures of me with the haircut. She looked at my hair and said it would not take much to fix the problems. She did an absolutely fantastic job. The cut is even better than I had hoped for from the first stylist. I am very happy with the haircut and with Ty's wonderful customer service. She rescued me from a bad cut and did it very quickly. I highly recommend her and I will return to see her again! read more

I've been going to Jessica at this salon for about a year now, and she is the best! All my friends go to her. She is someone I trust. It's best to bring pictures (good rule of thumb for any salon), but it's sometimes easier than trying to describe. She will give you the best cut and color of your life. It's a small, local salon with a variety of products too. The receptionist is always friendly. It's a very laid back, casual salon. I enjoy the ambience. I went here to get my hair cut short. I came in with a good idea and pictures of what I wanted. I showed the stylist and she seemed to understand but then cut my hair completely different. I left with my hair in a very short choppy pixie cut which is not what I wanted at all. I had to go to a different salon to fix this cut so my hair ended up being even shorter! I just went to a chain salon and they did such a good job fixing what Coyote War Sideburns did and were only about a quarter of the price. read more

I have very thin hair and a bad cut can take years to recover from... She strongly encouraged me to try the cut she wanted for me. I never actually agreed, but that is what I got. I have been going to The Coyote Wore Sideburns since I was a little girl and have always had a 5 star experience getting my hair cut, colored, and styled. I love the hair products they use and the staff has always been kind to me. When I saw they now offered waxing I decided to set an appointment.. PLEASE, DO NOT GET YOUR WAXING DONE HERE! I want to leave the salon feeling more beautiful than when I walked in. So it is very upsetting to say one day later both of my upper brows are covered in little white pimples while there are two scabs below my brows where, clearly, my skin lifted. Yes I have been taking medication for acne for about a year and a half but that never seemed to be an issue when I went to Elements in Balance on 4th Ave for the past 3 years which I immediately regretted not sticking with my original specialist from the moment the hard wax touched my skin. The shape of my brows are on point, but the fact that by the time the pimples and scabs have gone away I will have my usually bushy brows back I am most certainly never getting any future waxing at the Coyote Wore Sideburns! (As a hair salon, they still rule ;)) read more
