Flavors in the sauce was very subtle, flavors of onion/garlic and white wine. We tried the Craftman New American Tavern for the first time yesterday, but will not return and will not recommand the place to our friends. There is more places with excellent food for lower price around Encinitas. Party of 3, they don't take a reservation for a small group. They charge $15 for corking fee if you bring your own wine. Moonshine is a mixed drink, it was watermelon flavor that night: they seem to have different flavors depending on what juice they have available. The place needed more staff, the hostess was also helping filling drink orders. The wait was not that bad, waitress was polite but not too friendly. Decent selection of local craft brews. Asked for a taster of Lost Abbey Devotion, it had black particles in the beer (coming from a dirty glass or the tap line?) The Deep Fried Brussels Sprouts was over priced for a 1/2 cup serving, but delicious. Burger was cooked to perfection as requested (medium). We had the chocolate tart with sea salt caramel: they should give you a steak knife to cut this thing as the crust was really hard. Noise volume was not too bad at 6:30pm, but it was hard to have a conversation around 7:30pm, so we decide to go. They might consider having drapes or noise cancelling wall panels. read more

I went today to get the Boston creme pie (I got it to go) and when I opened it and took a bite it tasted hard and old. I have gone in the past and the pastry tasted soft and delicious. This time the pastry tasted the opposite. I paid 9.70 which is expensive for a bad dessert. read more

My wife and I were looking for a different place to go for dinner on a recent Friday after work and found The Craftsman New American Tavern. While nothing was particularly terrible, the word that sums is all up for us is "average". Here's why: - The place was packed so we got a spot at the bar. It took a while for one of the three people behind the bar to finally be willing to come over and take a drink order...good thing that we were able by ourselves to reach that menu which was leaning against the wall or it would have been an even longer wait to get a beer! After that, the service was pretty average...sometimes attentive, sometimes we had to wave to try to flag someone down. (Just as an aside, why do wait staff look like they're afraid to even glance your way from time to time?) - The menu is pretty average...we were expecting a lot of beers on tap, but it was actually a fairly small list. And, no Hef option. - Food was pretty average. The beet salad was good, but the burger tasted like it could have been from Carls Jr. And, the fries that we asked to have extra crispy were not so much. - Atmosphere style was "strip mall transitioned to look like hip pub" motif. Unfortunately, it was really loud. Bottom line: OK place, I guess...but with so many other options around it isn't a place we'll return to anytime soon. read more

I like the Craftsman but it is by no means as awesome as its sister restaurant, Blue Ribbon Pizza. Here is what I really like about the Craftsman: - Great happy hour specials - Lots of options on the menu; good food but nothing mind-blowing - Friendly hostesses, bartenders and servers - Good craft beers on draft; fun cocktails - Cute decor - Easy to get to with plenty of parking I like The Craftsman for happy hour or a meal at non-peak times but on a Friday or Saturday night, it just feels too chaotic. The tables are too close together so you overhear conversations easily and know yours is overhead too. In fact, during one of my visits here, the people next to us chimed into our conversation. Had the opportunity to eat here today and enjoyed myself! I tried to take a picture, but I was so hungry I forgot we started off with the deep-fried Brussels sprouts. They were great, bacon apple cider vinegar or brussels sprouts salt-and-pepper and I believe there were capers as well. Great to start off with! I ordered pizza, flatbread for the table with pepperoni. I really enjoyed the fact that the mozzarella seemed to fresh and the sauce light and tangy. Because of who we were traveling with today, we ordered a gluten-free crust; not my favorite as the pizza seemed soggy in the middle. However, am happy to see that they are able to cater to those who need it! The pepperoni, was artesian and cut thicker than normal that was a nice little change. I ordered the prime rib dip for lunch. I really enjoyed the baguette it came on, however, the meat was a bit fatty for my taste and the dip seemed more like sweetened gravy. It was really thick and hard to dip. I am someone who really enjoys a good au jus! The fries it came with were on point. Crunchy, hot and tasty! Tried this restaurant tonight on a recommendation. Absolutely the worst service we have ever had! We sat at our table for about 15 minutes before anyone came over. The waitress didn't even introduce herself or say hi. She just asked for a drink order that never came. I had to go to the bar to get my drink order. The bartenders were great but they said they couldn't take my drink order because I was at a table. Food was super overpriced for the quality. Never saw a waitress/waiter the whole night until the check. We had to go find someone to get waters and find someone to get us drinks and go find someone to get us condiments that the food runner said he would bring. I went with a couple friends on Friday night. I have been to the Craftsman a few times before, and always enjoyed the food and service. However, my last visit was different. The service was very poor. I moved from the bar to a table in bar and then was asked by a bartender to move because she would like to split the tables up. That was disappointing, as I had been waiting for a particular table to open up. After we moved to a different table, the service was very poor. We basically had to flag people down to get food and drinks. The GF flatbread was delicious, but I was disappointed with the prime rib was it was not pan seared as advertised (as I've had it in the past). The staff seemed overly busy and not happy to be there. Great warm atmosphere at this gem of a gastropub in Encinitas. They have a nice selection of local beers on tap including my favorite, The Lost Abbey's Devotion. It all started with my travels to a pizza bar called the "Blue Ribbon" in Encinitas. The chef/owner opened up the Craftsman in 2013 I believe and puts out some very tasty food. Im talking those that want locally sourced stuff. Its medium end hipster food with an emphasis on quality. The folks are always nice and the lively crowd is treated to that awesome hipster ambiance. The bar menu is awesome with signature drinks and a wonderful wine selection. Try the butterscotch pudding- a signature dessert that one must order to believe how good it is. We have loved the Craftsman. Went there with my son on a Wednesday night. Probably should have made a reservation but has never been needed in the past, and I have called and been told the same. With one 2 top and three 4 tops unoccupied in the main room, I asked the host if we could have one. Was told all were reserved, NO reserve sign on them and quickly shown to the "Family" section with screaming children and pets. We go there for the sports and the 5 or 6 TV's have all the current games on. No dice! The 16 YO hosts are rude and pushy. We sat down and ordered drinks and standard menu items. Drinks came out but 40min for food. The rush came in after us. Craftsman suffers from poor kitchen and guest management. No computerized points of sale. I really cant see how they are so popular with such poor management. Our server was tipped at 20% and was very polite. But overwhelmed. AVOID Craftsman until they get it figured out. read more

This is our favorite place in the world! It's homey and everyone is friendly and remembers you. The manager is phenomenal. The food amazing.
