Hate to write this review because Josh and his family are good people but the cuts here have been inconsistently bad here over the past year as most of their best Barbers are gone. The new rockabilly chick cutting here ruined another 4 months of hair regrowth after a previous barber ( at this same shop ) cut literally into my hairline with 10+ inches of hair causing me to have to shave my head to regrow 4 year worth of hair growth. Hair gets longer again, a different barber performs an undercut toooo damn narrow so I'm regrowing another bad haircut from this shop. I told the girl, don't take anything off the top... nothing. Not only does she cut the top, she does one side correctly and fucking chops off a whole side part on my hair... and even then it was a shitty chop at that. After losing more months and months trying to regrow hair after their consistent "inconsistent haircuts" I'm throwing in the towel on this place. I suggest sticking with Josh if you're coming here, otherwise your haircut will literally be a hit or miss. read more

I wish more people knew about this little gem in Montebello. Ever since I started getting my hair done by Monique 3 years ago, I've never gone to anyone else to touch my bangs and regularly trim my hair. It's the healthiest it has ever been in years! Monique gives great recommendations on how to style my hair. I used to go to other salons and big chain salons to get my hair done. But for the price you pay at the cream shop you get QUALITY service. Others may charge you less but do you want Supercuts quality hair? I don't! read more

My soon to be 4 year old had a haircut appointment with Josh. My son has autism/adhd and has a very difficult time sitting still and isn't very fond of how the clippers feel on his head. (He has noise and sensory difficulties.) So as you can imagine every haircut appointment I've taken him to (other barbershops) always ended up in both of us leaving in tears. I walked into this shop with A LOT of anxiety worried he wouldn't still and it would end in disaster. To my surprise Josh was very patient and understanding. My son was the calmest he's ever been sitting in a barbershop chair. I couldn't believe it! At one point Josh even let my son get down from the chair to look at the fish in the fish tank and get a little break. After a couple of minutes he went back to the chair and Josh was able to continue. This was honestly the best haircut experience my son and I have ever had. I highly recommend him and look forward to having him cut my son's hair again in the future. Thanks again! read more

Every time I come here either Joshua or Alfredo got me covered. I can always count on them to be on time and know exactly what kind of cut I want. I liked going to this place, cool atmosphere, entertainming decor, and friendly staff, but Alfredo was not careful with my lines. I have been trying to get my mohawk in order for months and went to a specialist that straightened it out and Alfredo just messed me up. This makes me sad because all that work, just to have this person mutilate my lineup without a care. read more

Monique gave my hair that extra oomph, i wanted my dark brown hair but better! she did an amazing job for me previously dying my hair black box dye and before that it was red. I came to Monique while I was pushing 8 months of pregnancy and she was so attentive to making sure that I was comfortable or if i needed a break at any given moment. i wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair! she has a good hand & her energy is amazing!! 10/10 recommend!! read more

Apparently they don't understand what "short" means. I asked for my hair at thee fromt to be at the longest an inch and a half or 2 inches but they left it as long as i walked in with! Attached is the pic i showed if what i wanted and the long haired on is me (wt the gym hence the sweat) ii didnt think it was bad because the barber had styled it and made it look short so i was good. At the gym with the sweat i saw he had not cut anything at all! I can get better haircuts from elderly ladies with their basic barber shops and i might as well so i can get a basic short haircut! Won't bother coming here again. read more

Found this barber shop on yelp since we were down in the area and my bf needed a hair cut. Came here due to the good reviews on yelp. Called ahead to see if I could make a same day appointment however, there was not one available so we did a walk in. They were able to take us immediately and we did not have to wait very long which was nice. The staff was friendly and my bf was happy with the way his hair cut had turned out. The barber shop does have reasonable prices for a hair cut and we paid significantly less than we normally do. $18 for a hair cut? Not bad. On a side note: **The yelp check-in is old and they are not doing the offer anymore** The staff member was not even aware of the yelp check in and I think they should take it down if they are not offering it anymore. read more

I had heard about this barber shop from a friend. My son had been looking for a good place and barber he could keep coming too more than one time. We found it. He had cut his hair at The Cream Shop about 3 times now and likes the barber he has had for the three hair cuts. It's a friendly and fun environment. All the barbers are friendly and engage with each of their clients. The price is reasonable and the shop is clean all the time. Only downfall is the parking and sometimes the wait. But overall this will be our spot. read more

Every single barber here does an outstanding job. I came in last year because they where open the latest. I needed an emergency cut. They where busy and close to clocking out but they made the time for me. Great cut. But you know, not every time right? WRONG. Every time I come I get a different guy. And every time I leave looking and feeling great. My new barber/s have been found!!! Only took me like five plus years to find one after my last barber past away, went to him since I was 16. I am loyal. As long as they keep making feel and look good i will always go back. Thank you gentlemen. Well I have to say I'm not in the "every barber here is great" any longer. I have found the two best and try my damndest to only sit in their chair. That know me and know who they are. Thank you. If not for them I'd be on the search again. Often it does not. Tony at Checkmate Barbershop charges forty dollars. The shop is in Montebello, which means it is not trying to be anything other than a barbershop. No reservations. No app. No hot towel upsell. You walk in, and if Tony's chair is open, you sit in it, and he does the thing that a surprising number of expensive barbers cannot do, which is cut your hair correctly. A one on the sides, tapered up, trim the top -- the kind of straightforward men's cut that sounds simple until you're the person holding the clippers and staring at hair that wants to project horizontally from the fade line like it's staging a protest. Tony navigated it with the quiet precision of someone who has solved this problem a thousand times and doesn't need to narrate the process. The taper was seamless. The top was shaped without being overthought. The cut looked right the day of and -- the real test -- still looked right a week later, which is when most mediocre haircuts reveal themselves for what they are. The shop itself is contemporary and clean, the kind of place where the design suggests someone cares but not so much that you feel like you're being charged for the aesthetic. The music was excellent and omnivorous in a way that told you something about the people running the place: The Specials drifted into Mungo Jerry drifted into something from the mid-eighties, the kind of rotation that makes you want to sit in the chair a little longer even after the cut is done. The vibe is friendly without being performative. Nobody tried to become my best friend. Nobody ignored me either. It was the Goldilocks zone of barbershop social interaction, which if you've ever sat through a forty-five-minute cut with a barber who won't stop talking about crypto, you know is not a trivial thing. Forty dollars. Walk-in. In Montebello. For a precision fade on difficult hair that holds up better than cuts I've paid nearly three times as much for. The math is so simple it's almost embarrassing that it took me this long to find it.

He also does a great job with children's haircuts. My 4 year old son enjoys getting his haircut with Anthony and playing with the pool table while he waits for his haircut. I appreciate the vintage aesthetic of the barbershop and the customer service. They have water and coffee available and that's always nice during an early morning haircut on the weekends. That says a lot about the kind of person and professional he is. He's also a perfectionist in the best way possible. He constantly checks in throughout the appointment, asking if you love your nails. By far the best barbershop I've been too! Amazing staff, very awesome environment! First time I got what was probably my BEST & favorite haircut from Joshua, he was super friendly, never met the guy but damn it while he cutting my hair we talked as if we knew each other for a LONG time. I've also bleached my hair for the first time with Monique, I had no clue what to expect but she was super cool & was answering every question I asked about my hair. So Right off the bat everyone Is SO friendly it almost seems like you walk into a family's atmosphere & they make you feel the part! They also have a WIDE variety of pomades! anything you can possibly think of they have. I have an addiction buying pomades even when I'm not out & DAMN they feed it! Instead, the atmosphere felt unwelcoming, and it seemed like they had a chip on their shoulder. Basic courtesy and communication go a long way, and unfortunately, the customer service was very poor. When I asked the owner why he didn't tell us upfront that this was an apprentice barber, he literally said "how else are they supposed to learn". I know that a apprentice barbers are allowed to cut hair under the supervision of an Experienced and licensed Barber. But this is crazy!!! I feel that this should be shared with customers upfront. Never offered any type of remedy and were still charged the $30 full price!!!
