This facility paid very little attention to my mother. Her personal items were stolen from her room. She had very few activities to participate in (as compared with Arden Courts in Northern Virginia). Granted, this place cost a lot less than Arden Courts, but they do not do what they advertise. In addition to what I felt was a sad lack of interaction, when my mother became gravely ill, the staff at Southerland Place didn't call me. The first I heard was from the hospital where she was taken, and by that time several hours had passed and it was too late. My mother died alone because this facility didn't take the time, or care enough, to contact my family. Then, after she had passed away, we had another battle with moving furniture out of her room and they continued to bill us AND BILL LATE CHARGES AFTER SHE WAS DEAD. In fact, I just received an additional invoice for personal services 4 months after she died. Really, unless this is close to your home and you are able to visit several times a week, I would not choose this facility, nor would I recommend it. And if you should go and visit and think the staff is nice, do yourself a favor and go onto the internet onto whistle blower websites and read about the management. Not a good situation.

Below is the review I made under Southerland Place - Midlothian. In searching for an assisted living facility the task was difficult and stressful. I had my mind set on one place due to its location and reputation, but felt I owed it to my loved one to do my due diligence and visit all of the places close by. When I went to Southerland Place and toured the facility I knew this was the place. Their executive director, Sam Stoddard, took time to walk down the hall to say hello and make sure someone was helping me. Later as I talked with him, I could tell he was a man of integrity and cared about his residents. Then I met Courtney, their sales manager, she has a great personality and knew all of the residents by name. As I toured, I tried to watch how the staff interacted with the residents and was impressed with love they showed to each individual. We had lunch with the managing staff and really enjoyed the food and company. They even let the residents help with planning the menu as the chef came out during lunch to discuss options for the next week. Larry and Rena deal with the assessment and all nursing type stuff. They listened and treated my loved one with respect. Nancy, the business manager, has been a great help with getting the proper paperwork needed for long term care insurance. Her door is always open, if you have any questions. When we moved in Sam and Ronnie helped with the move. Ronnie is the manager of maintenance and is quick to help you with any request you may have. It has been 2 months since my loved one moved in and they love the place. The family has seen a big improvement in our loved one mental and physical state. The activities are great! They have had a Senior Prom, Bingo, Card games and other things to stimulate the minds of their residence. At lunch the staff came in and provided entertainment by hula hooping and even Sam got in there and gave it try. My loved one laughed and still gets a chuckle when thinking about it. One last thing that has impressed me is when I see Courtney she always ask how we are liking the place and if there is anything that the Southerland Place can do to make it a better place. I like this because it shows that they are always trying to improve the place. If you are in need of an assisted living facility I strongly recommend The Southerland Place.

I must have visited this facility at least 3 times a week for a decade! I live nearby so it was convenient to walk there with my kids and visit my dad and the other elderly residents. We got to know many of the folks there, all the nurses and nuns as well. The front desk receptionist was always courteous and welcoming, the foyer is spacious and simply decorated. This place always felt more like an apartment building than a "nursing home." It was always fresh, bright, and clean. The floors were always so shiny and immaculate. We checked in and took the elevator to my dad's room. The living spaces there were always neat and organized, with laundry services provided. Residents can make their rooms as personalized as they'd like. We saw some lovely, well-appointed living rooms and bedrooms. The common areas are pristine and comfortable. We enjoyed seeing the other seniors there and took pleasure reading to them, helping with meals in the communal dining room, and even conducting Bible studies! The kitchenette has a couple tables, snacks and drinks for the residents. There's also a well stocked library and games. The nuns of the Little Sisters that run the facility provide spiritual support and many activities to keep the folks there encouraged and entertained when appropriate. They also have yard sales and festivals throughout the year. The nursing care was amazing and we felt confident in the safety and healthcare my father received. He was cared for in a dignified and gentle manner as he went through the stages of needed care. The staff made his adjustments for further medical assistance seamlessly. They certainly made a difficult situation much more easy to handle. Our minds were set at ease knowing my dad was being treated with compassion and love. Beautiful grounds surround the buildings, where residents can talks walks, pause for prayer and meditation and just enjoy being outside with nature. I'm so thankful for the extraordinary care my dad was given by the incredible people here. We couldn't have chosen a better home for him.

Hopewell has been his home since 1987. Finding Brighter Living in Hopewell, has been a godsend. His hometown and the facility is excellent! I'm very comfortable knowing he's in a nice, comfortable and safe environment. I hope my kids ensure I get to spend my last days in such a nice facility.

Went to this "facility" today after my best friends mother was transferred from a normal nursing…read morehome to this woman's home by her abusive husband through a recommendation from his cousin. She accepted my friend's mother as a patient without having access to obtaining her medications. She has extremely severe diabetes that has caused her to enter a diabetic coma twice now. When my friend spoke with the owner of this facility she told her that her mother "would be fine overnight without her insulin" which was the first red flag. She scrambled to find any extra insulin her mother had and brought it to her so she would not go without it. the next red flag was that she immediately told her that her mom was being placed on hospice and would most likely die soon even though no one at any of the real nursing facilities or doctors at the hospital have brought this up at all. She then told her if she did not come get a medical power of attorney document notarized within 48 hours she would be kicked out. again she accepted this patient without that being a prior requirement before taking her in and it is week of 4th of July on a wednesday. my friend has had no say in any of this and works a full time job and we live an hour away from where she is located now. thankfully i was able to find a notary that could meet us at 7:30pm this evening so that she could get this paperwork done. She is charging $5,000 a month to care for her. apparently her only employee quit yesterday. there are no doors or bed alarms in the patients bedroom which is just a giant living room attached to their home and has threatened that if her mother gets up at night she won't be allowed to stay there which makes sense if you aren't equipped to care for memory loss patients or any patients with a high level care need. She knew we were coming out this evening and when my friend lifted the blanket covering her mother i noticed her diaper was so swollen it looked like she hadnt been changed all day. the woman who runs this facility just gives off bad vibes in general and after seeing what care shes receiving for $5,000 a month i am extremely concerned. apparently this woman is an RN. i have not looked up her license yet but i have worked as a CNA + med tech for 12+ years in various different settings including hospitals, in home care, and long term facilities and nothing about her home is comparable to the care that her patients should be receiving. our plan is to get her out of there as soon as possible and back to the facility she was at where they had the staff and ability to properly care for their patients. Over the past two days that she has had to interact with her the only reassurance she has given is that "most people die quickly when they get there so she won't have to deal with overcrowding" while also telling my friend that all the sudden her mother is going to die soon. Her husband has multiple adult protective services investigations open against him right now for abuse and leaving her mother to die alone in her bedroom multiple times where she has been put on life support when her daughter finds out and EMTs arrive and take her to the hospital because of the condition she is in. Please for the love of god do not send your family members here if you have any other option

Torie is kind, efficient, and trustworthy, in everything she provides to her patients. Torie truly is a special person. I would highly recommend her for a caregiver any day! The whole family felt Pop was in good hands. Oh, and we cannot forget Moose. Moose is so sweet and provides comfort alongside Torie and her family!! The brochure that I received in the hospital in the hospital was not what I experienced here. When…read moreI left the hospital I was able to walk on a walker to get myself to the bathroom. After the staff evaluation, I was placed in a wheelchair and told for my own safety ( with no falls or history of falls) that I needed to remain in this until the next week eval. There reason for keeping me in a chair was because in the hospital my blood sugar was low but at no point while here did they check it. After eval I was not given or told about a PT schedule which is what I was there for. I was also placed in a room with an older female who could not get herself to the bathroom. Before arriving my doctor told me I would be in rehab for 2wks. The staff at the rehab told me I needed to give 30 day notice. I was told to not cry because I was emotional of being there and if I upset other patients then a psych evaluation would be done. I called my doctor and family members before leaving less than 24hrs. The residents I met and PCA were lovely people but that's it. Most of the amenities that were described in the brochure, were either not shown or discussed. When moving around I didn't see these amenities. For example, personal concierge services, onsite beauty salon, vibrant activities and entertainment. The awful Food uncovered was left on my bed table when I came out of the bathroom and I was not shown a dining area.

This place is wonderful. My wife is there for rehab after a long bout with cancer. The care she has…read morereceived has been absolutely first rate. The people there from the nurses to the therapists to the social workers to even the people who clean the facility are uniformly friendly and professional. The staff are very attentive to my wife and the fact that her doctors at VCU check on her there regularly and are in touch on a frequent bases with Beaufont gives me great peace of mind that she is being well cared for. One more thing....the food is even good there. I have never said that about any health care facility before and my wife has been in quite a few over the past year and a half. While I wish my wife were home now, I am thankful that she is getting the care she needs to come back to me fully recovered. Very thankful for their care for my wife.

The lady that gave the tour promised discounts that she couldn't back up, and her boss went against it. So, we refused to pay the $8000+ monthly fee to move our family member there. Had she known that promises wouldn't be kept, she wouldn't have even wasted her time because their amount is way out of my price range. The set up is cute though. They have a little "town" set up throughout the building for the people who live there to possibly help in jogging their past memories or just make them feel comfortable. The bedrooms are a decent size. My loved one doesn't need much space. They seem to keep the building tidy and organized. I can't speak for much else. We had to keep searching for a facility that could protect my loved one with dementia 24/7 at a more reasonable price.
