Rear ebike hub drive wheel (not pictured). The tire had a thorn pierce the tire and tube.
    Mike R.

Asking for help to remove a tube and tire from an ebike wheel feels like you're burdening these folks. So I had a flat tire due to a thorn piercing the tire and caused a slow leak. Thankfully, I got home OK because I've had sealant in my tubes (I use Flatout) since I purchased the ebike. I've had the ebike since September, 2023, and this is the first time I've had a flat. It was the rear drive wheel that had the flat tire. I've commuted to work twice a week since September of 2023, a round trip of 7 miles. I've had the flat since middle of May, 2024. Since then, the times I needed to get to work on my ebike, I've needed to ask friends for a ride to and from work. I also bought tools to break my ebike drive chain in order to physically remove the rear wheel that had the flat tire. I was just really unsuccessful in removing the tire and tube from the rim. I was using Granite brand, Talon bike tire levers but couldn't slide the other lever as the bead was embedded in the rim's edge. It's not the tool that failed, it's the user. So after I reassessed my options and concluded that I need the help of a professional and chose a place that is local to me in South Pasadena, which is The Cub House. So the work week had ended, and it is now the weekend leading up to Memorial Day. I called first asking for a quote, and I was able to speak with Eric. I asked Eric how much would it be to pop off a tire. He said $7.50. I said great, I will come by to get help from their bike tech. So I went ahead and removed my ebike wheel so that I can bring it in to The Cub House, to save them the trouble of removing my wheel from the frame, and from being charged any more money. Besides, our vehicle may not fit the entire ebike in the trunk. So here's what I brought to The Cub House: ebike wheel, which has a hub-type motor, the tube inside the tire, the tire with the thorn that I had removed, and nothing else. I saw one of the bike techs outside working on a bike, and decided to walk up and say hi. I was greeted in kind, and I asked if he could help me with popping off the tire on my ebike wheel. It is from a 2023 Juicedbikes ripracer. He didn't know that and didn't need to know. All he knew was that its from an ebike, because it has the hub motor that's part of the wheel. After struggling to unseat the tire, and scratching the paint off my rim, he eventually got it out on one side, and asked if I also needed to have the other side of the tire popped off the rim. I said, yes please, and he proceeded to unseat the tire, which took considerable effort. As we are all human, there was considerable frustration, and eventually, the other side of the tire was now popped off the rim. I don't work as a bike tech for a living, so I can only imagine how hard it must have been for the tech to remove the tire and tube from the rim of the wheel. He handed me the rim, the tube, and the tire, and as I received the items from, I asked how much I owed him. He said $7.50 in an exasperated voice. I said thanks, then proceeded to go inside the store to look for someone stationed at the register. I spoke with the person at the register and said that I had help from the tech to pop off the tire from my wheel. He confirmed the price of $7.50, and asked if I needed anything else. I said, no thank you. He processed my transaction, I said my thanks, and I was on my way. For $7.50 though, I can't complain. Just needed the labor, and they don't have to be sincere in thanking you. I don't know if I can go back to The Cub House again for future flat tire repairs. Do yourselves a favor and specify 'no ebike service'. Period. You have the right to refuse service to ebike riders who don't buy an ebike from you. Just be upfront about it in your socials and ads. I'd rather drive miles away to get ebike service than come back here, even though I am local to the area. Or, I can just move out of South Pasadena , since ebikes seem like they are mostly frowned upon here by bike repair shops anyway, not unlike neighboring Glendale, which I brought the same wheel with new tube and tire, and was only charged $20 at a competitor store for the labor, and a better customer service experience.

Hadn't stopped by in a while and they still espouse rizz. Attentive customer service and so many bicycling items from past and present. An organic museum of curated coolness to buy. Awesome selection!

My happy bici with a new seat, water bottle holder, and home bike pump

It was about time I took my bike out again. Especially, during these covid times, it makes biking a little bit more safer (kinda.. there's still crazy drivers around). I have been to this shop before to get some air for mine and my mom's bike before a Ciclavia ride, but it's been awhile. During these times, on Yelp, they do ask for people to schedule appointments before heading out there. I ended up just calling in and asking if they have a certain bike seat color. Luckily, they did and I was able to go in without an appointment! The guy who helped me with the bike seat was kind to set it up that day half an hour before closing time. The seat wasn't too pricey (which I liked). While I was there, I added a water bottle holder, and a home bike pump to my purchases. The guys that worked there were nice and were able to explain stuff to me, if I didn't understand which I totally appreciate. Their hip hop playlist was good too. They also sell succulents which was cool to browse while I was waiting for my bike to finish getting fixed. Parking was easy and close enough to the shop to unload my bike from my car. Definitely recommend others to come here for their bici fixes or questions!

I've passed this bicycle shop many times but it always looked closed. I finally pulled over on my bicycle to check out what they had to offer. The shop is actually pretty big and they have a great collections of bicycle goodies and clothing, plus a cactus shop in back.

Great service. The rules during quarantine is call or text, set an appointment for bike repairs, drop off, and then pick up. Pick up takes a couple of days because they are busy! People, like me, have rediscovered their bikes, so many are getting tune ups and such. Great service. Cheerful and helpful. Love that I live nearby.

I initially just needed the seat raised and the handlebars adjusted, but it turned out the chain was incredibly loose, the tubes were probably at least 10 years old, and there were a handful of other things that needed attention. I worked with Joe, who was absolutely fantastic. He was genuinely excited about the bike and eager to help. He even brought me outside, watched how I was riding, and made adjustments on the spot. After that, we brought the bike inside so they could take a closer look and handle the bigger fixes. They really took their time to make sure everything was dialed in perfectly. Joe also noticed I had a women's seat on the bike, which is fine, but as a man it wasn't the best fit. I appreciated that they paid attention to details like that. They were also very mindful of my budget and made sure we didn't overspend while still getting everything safe and road ready. Ben handled the tube replacement and did a great job. It truly felt like a team effort to make sure my bike was not only running well but completely safe. They even threw in a free water bottle holder and installed it because it was hot out! I ended up grabbing the sickest Grateful Dead inspired water bottle and filled up while I was there, the ride home was so much less intense because of that. My family and I have been going to Around the Cycle for years and have bought multiple bikes from them. Every experience has been excellent. It's clear this is a tight knit group that genuinely cares about their customers. This isn't some corporate chain. It's exactly what you'd hope every neighborhood shop would be like. Anytime anyone I know needs anything bike related, I send them to Around the Cycle without hesitation. They're simply the best. Huge shout out to Joe and Ben for the amazing service and going above and beyond. They will have my business for life!

This is the only time I've been compelled to write a yelp review…read more I recently purchased some new caliper brakes for my bike. Upon installation I noted that my brake cables and cable housing needed to be replaced. I can do this myself and have many times before. I usually do my own bike maintenance, and have for years, unless it's something I don't have the tools or knowledge to fix. In this case I simply didn't want to be bothered ordering cables and housing and decided to take it to have done. First impression of the shop is grimey, cluttered and disorganized. I explained what I wanted done and the proprietor quoted me a reasonable price and gave me a reasonable time frame for the work to be done. Everything seems great so far. I arrive for pick up, first thing I notice is that my bike is in the center of a bike sandwich leaning against one of the walls. Concern.gif. He removes it none too gently. Cable has been replaced, I note that the rear cable adjuster is in the maximum position that you would use to tighten the cable. I begin to spin the adjuster to check cable tension when the proprietor tells me vehemently to not touch it. I wonder why, explain this is the cable tension adjuster and I'm adjusting it. He again tells me not to touch it. I actuate the (also new) brake lever, and it feels spongy, not crisp, and doesn't fully spring back into place. I voice my concerns at which point he squeezes the brakes a couple of times and tells me it's fine. It is not. I again reach for the adjuster and he again tells me not to touch it, his voice raising, saying it twice. I think that I'll just have to take it elsewhere, thank him and leave. Outside I examine his "work," more closely and note that the cable tension adjuster is non functional, and that now there is half of an internal component of the tensioner, a washer?, protruding from the new caliper brake. I attempt to adjust the tensioner. It is non functional. I return into the shop and point out the damage, and demonstrate the tensioner does not work. He again says not to touch it. I explain that it is designed to be touched, it is for adjustments. He tells me he does not see the washer, which is believable as he's quite old, and that he didn't touch that part, yet he would have had to when installing the cable. I'm getting upset at this point, another customer waiting for service overhears this exchange and decides against this shop, telling me "Sorry, bro," as he wisely wheeled his bike out and presumably to a better shop. That was my experience, lesson learned. Sometimes you can judge a book by it's cover. My only thought now is that I hope my rear caliper isn't permanently damaged. Addendum: also noted some fresh cosmetic damage as well.
