This is quite possibly the worst bike shop in existence, and that is saying a lot. My husband and I have lived in multiple states and travel a lot. Needless to say, we have been to HUNDREDS of bike shops because we make it a point to go to a shop in every town we visit. Are you looking for a bike shop where all of the employees are smug? Are you hoping to ask questions, looking to spends thousands of dollars, only to be met with aloofness? Great! Then this is the bike shop for you! We've been to Cub House so many times and spoken to multiple employees, etc. It is always the same, "I don't give a crap; I am too cool" attitude. Great first service experience with The Cub House after having purchased a few retail items from them over the last couple of years. Super knowledgeable, helpful staff. I needed a new derailleur and hard-to-find hanger for my older model Litespeed. They sourced and installed both, along with a new chain, replacement spoke and trued wheel, new bar tape, tune-up and whole lot of helpful info about my bike and bikes in general, as I've just started shopping for a gravel/road bike. Asking for help to remove a tube and tire from an ebike wheel feels like you're burdening these folks. So I had a flat tire due to a thorn piercing the tire and caused a slow leak. Thankfully, I got home OK because I've had sealant in my tubes (I use Flatout) since I purchased the ebike. I've had the ebike since September, 2023, and this is the first time I've had a flat. It was the rear drive wheel that had the flat tire. I've commuted to work twice a week since September of 2023, a round trip of 7 miles. I've had the flat since middle of May, 2024. Since then, the times I needed to get to work on my ebike, I've needed to ask friends for a ride to and from work. I also bought tools to break my ebike drive chain in order to physically remove the rear wheel that had the flat tire. I was just really unsuccessful in removing the tire and tube from the rim. I was using Granite brand, Talon bike tire levers but couldn't slide the other lever as the bead was embedded in the rim's edge. It's not the tool that failed, it's the user. So after I reassessed my options and concluded that I need the help of a professional and chose a place that is local to me in South Pasadena, which is The Cub House. So the work week had ended, and it is now the weekend leading up to Memorial Day. I called first asking for a quote, and I was able to speak with Eric. I asked Eric how much would it be to pop off a tire. He said $7.50. I said great, I will come by to get help from their bike tech. So I went ahead and removed my ebike wheel so that I can bring it in to The Cub House, to save them the trouble of removing my wheel from the frame, and from being charged any more money. Besides, our vehicle may not fit the entire ebike in the trunk. So here's what I brought to The Cub House: ebike wheel, which has a hub-type motor, the tube inside the tire, the tire with the thorn that I had removed, and nothing else. I saw one of the bike techs outside working on a bike, and decided to walk up and say hi. I was greeted in kind, and I asked if he could help me with popping off the tire on my ebike wheel. It is from a 2023 Juicedbikes ripracer. He didn't know that and didn't need to know. All he knew was that its from an ebike, because it has the hub motor that's part of the wheel. After struggling to unseat the tire, and scratching the paint off my rim, he eventually got it out on one side, and asked if I also needed to have the other side of the tire popped off the rim. I said, yes please, and he proceeded to unseat the tire, which took considerable effort. As we are all human, there was considerable frustration, and eventually, the other side of the tire was now popped off the rim. I don't work as a bike tech for a living, so I can only imagine how hard it must have been for the tech to remove the tire and tube from the rim of the wheel. He handed me the rim, the tube, and the tire, and as I received the items from, I asked how much I owed him. He said $7.50 in an exasperated voice. I said thanks, then proceeded to go inside the store to look for someone stationed at the register. I spoke with the person at the register and said that I had help from the tech to pop off the tire from my wheel. He confirmed the price of $7.50, and asked if I needed anything else. I said, no thank you. He processed my transaction, I said my thanks, and I was on my way. For $7.50 though, I can't complain. Just needed the labor, and they don't have to be sincere in thanking you. I don't know if I can go back to The Cub House again for future flat tire repairs. Do yourselves a favor and specify 'no ebike service'. Period. You have the right to refuse service to ebike riders who don't buy an ebike from you. Just be upfront about it in your socials and ads. I'd rather drive miles away to get ebike service than come back here, even though I am local to the area. Or, I can just move out of South Pasadena , since ebikes seem like they are mostly frowned upon here by bike repair shops anyway, not unlike neighboring Glendale, which I brought the same wheel with new tube and tire, and was only charged $20 at a competitor store for the labor, and a better customer service experience. read more

It was about time I took my bike out again. Especially, during these covid times, it makes biking a little bit more safer (kinda.. there's still crazy drivers around). I have been to this shop before to get some air for mine and my mom's bike before a Ciclavia ride, but it's been awhile. During these times, on Yelp, they do ask for people to schedule appointments before heading out there. I ended up just calling in and asking if they have a certain bike seat color. Luckily, they did and I was able to go in without an appointment! The guy who helped me with the bike seat was kind to set it up that day half an hour before closing time. The seat wasn't too pricey (which I liked). While I was there, I added a water bottle holder, and a home bike pump to my purchases. The guys that worked there were nice and were able to explain stuff to me, if I didn't understand which I totally appreciate. Their hip hop playlist was good too. They also sell succulents which was cool to browse while I was waiting for my bike to finish getting fixed. Parking was easy and close enough to the shop to unload my bike from my car. Definitely recommend others to come here for their bici fixes or questions! read more

The service is fast and efficient, the employees are the best (and have a chill vibe), the owner is awesome, and with all this, you have all the resources you need to fix your bike. Very cool local bike shop. They have sell, fix and tune bikes up and the rates seem reasonable. it's a very cute shop that also has coffee and they also sell plants lots of cactuses. I came by because I thought I bent my rim, but when I took it in the bike mechanic said that it was actually my road tires belts had split. He stopped what he was doing and was able to quickly replace both tires and inner tubes on my bike and then I was on the way. Inside the shop they also have lots of bike accessories and clothing and they also sell roasted coffee. It was much too hot of a day for me to try their coffee, but the service was super good and friendly. read more

Service was fast, but way too pricey. I stopped by to get my brake rotor trued as it was very slightly bent - probably only a millimeter out of alignment. To the shops credit, they kindly fixed it right away b/c it was about a 2-3 minute fix. When it came time to pay, I was shocked that they charged $25 for the 3 minute fix. I've been to plenty of other local bike shops that would do this for free. Even though I didn't expect it to be free, that is way too much for something that is literally 1) unscrew two bolts, 2) bend a a disc a bit, and 3) screw the bolts back in. Sadly, I didn't ask how much it was in advance, and would have gone some place else if I had. So just a heads up - this place charges way too much for basic fixes. read more

Great service. The rules during quarantine is call or text, set an appointment for bike repairs, drop off, and then pick up. Pick up takes a couple of days because they are busy! People, like me, have rediscovered their bikes, so many are getting tune ups and such. Great service. Cheerful and helpful. Love that I live nearby. read more

I live in South Pasadena so this is my local bike shop but I've been to plenty of the others in the area (Incycle, Performance RIP, REI, Pasadena Cyclery, etc). This shop blows them all out of the water for me. Awesome atmosphere. Staff who are friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and really enthusiastic about biking. I never feel like I'm being ripped off because they've given me the best prices for service. They even managed to find nonstandard tires from Japan for my super old Schwinn. They're always hosting events that I'm tempted to attend. Love this place! read more

I rode past this bike shop numerous times on the way to the Rose Bowl and decided to drop off my bike for service as my brake pads were running low and my drive train wasn't running as quietly or shifting as smoothly as expected. Drop off at the shop was easy as I went when there weren't many other customers at the shop. When I was notified that my bike was ready for pick up (it took a week and a half, exactly as told at the time of drop off), I got dropped off and rode home. Bike got new front brake pads and drivetrain was running so quietly and smoothly that I took the long way home to enjoy the afternoon air and sunshine. Pricing is fair and comparable with the other local shops. Shop is very colorful and has a fun atmosphere and I'll have to check it out next time I visit. read more

Very knowledgeable and warm staff. Not only do they sell bikes or work on bikes, but they have a cool succulents nursery built in (Prickly Pals). I had an internal Nexus hub that pretty much fell apart when I tried to take the wheel off (I have an electric bike). Not a lot of bike shops work on these types of hubs but they knew their stuff. They tried to save me money by straightening out the slightly bent buckle. It worked for a little bit but came loose again. They ordered the part and fixed it a few days later. Didn't try to up-sell me anything. On top of that, you can enjoy some coffee and check out all the cool succulent plants, bike accessories, clothes, and other gear. read more

In May 2021, I bought a Crust Bombora, carbon fork edition. I tried for months to scavenge parts for it, and finally decided I didn't want to wait eternity through the backordered everything in the bike world, so I walked over the the Cub House. As a femme woman, I always feel out of place at bike shops, even though I also work within the bike industry (specifically, bike share). I've been talked down to, upsold, and once had someone try to upsell me a bike that was too small but they had in stock. Not here - these folks are the real deal. No misogyny, no talking down. Just offering advice as professionals when I ask, and sharing the stoke for my choices for my bike when I've made up my mind already. Danny and Brian have been absolutely incredible - Danny clearly and consistently communicating throughout the process and accommodating my asks for a tedious invoice. They share the stoke, and more importantly, they are here to get more people on bikes, period. It's not about insanely expensive gear and shaving off grams, if you don't want it to be (if you do, awesome!). That's all there is to it. Buy a 3-speed cruiser, buy a fancy track bike, just ride a dang bike and support this amazing LBS. read more

a very cool place. i've been here twice! i was driving down mission street when i saw painted on the side of the building "bikes * plants" and i was like "hmm seems like my type of place. so i sauntered in, and ended up buying some cool vinyl stickers, a new tube, and tire lever. the price is pretty fair for good quality things. workers are chill and helpful, know their stuff. they have lots of cool biking gear from tshirts to jerseys, socks to helmets. trendy bikers, go here. as a graphic designer, i can really appreciate this place. the interior is very nicely planned and decorated. the plants are only succulents :/ but they have little hats haha read more

This shop was mentioned in my biking LA travel guide, so I jumped on my Brompton and pedaled five miles to visit. And, OK, to buy some merch. In the parking lot, a few guys were talking together, pretty close to where I was folding up my bike. I rolled the bike into the shop and perused the merch. Spendy, but I was seriously considering an ice-dyed bag. However, nobody, not one soul, outside or inside, said hello, never mind offered to help in any way. So I rolled my bike out and readied for the return home, taking my time in case somebody wanted to say a thing. Nope. They probably won't miss my money in the long run, but they might never know how far a reach the lack of welcome can go. Took 4 days to change out a flat tube? Come on. Also, I must've called 4 separate times to ask about my tube, no answer... I drive by the cub house everyday and I can honestly say everytime I drive by, I see the employees chatting on the couch and chairs outside. When I pay someone to fix something, I want that person to be working as hard as they can to get that back to me as soon as possible. In this case, my flat tube should've taken 10 minutes not 4 days. Went to pick up my wife's Linus Bike after a 5 month wait. (thanks Pandemic!) We were helped by Ben who was just wonderful! He helped my wife with adjustments and made sure everything was working well. There were some dents on one part of the bike and he went and found another part to replace it. Come in for gear, merch, or mechanical fixes, but leave more invested in riding. I drive here to get my bikes fixed and tweaked, but always leave happier about riding. It's either because they really want your bike to work best for you or they want to hear about your riding adventures or just seem stoked about building adventure tools for adventurers. Whatever it is, I've found my people at the Cub House. They have my bikes rolling so well, I have to look for reasons to come by. Danny actually said a couple of days ago "We haven't seen you for a while, so we assumed you were enjoying the bike." He was so right. They had helped me set up with hydraulics. Now I am having so much fun that I thank them on the rides down from Mt Wilson. Up next, a double century and I'll need to spend some time there sorting out gear choices. One of the positive things about this hideous pandemic is the I got into cycling. Sure, I've gone to the big bike retailers to find saddles and locks but when it comes to giving my bike the TLC it needs, I come to the cub house. The mechanics are excellent and the vibe is super chill. I have stopped by on weekends for little issues with my bike while on rides and Paddy (sp?) always takes care of me. My partner bought a sweet road bike on craigslist and first thing I told her was that we need to go to see Paddy (sp?) for cleats, or pedals or to fix an odd noise. Feels like hanging with family. Unless I have to go to a big box retailer, I will always ride over to the cub house and will tell anyone who will listen to do the same. I love this neighborhood treasure.
