Happy Fourth of July! Hooray, let's go for a bike ride. At about the 4 1/2 mile mark of my 10 mile loop, my back wheel decided to have a nail-biting adventure--literally. Fortunately, I only had to walk my bike a little over a mile to Steve's Bike Shop, which was miraculously open on this holiday. The technician helped me as soon as I walked in, and within minutes, I was back on the road again. While changing my tire, she also checked my brakes, oiled the chain, and basically gave my bike a spa day for a great price. Now, that's service! Thank you for rescuing me, Steve's Bike Shop. This is because he's the only one I trust to work on my rare vintage bicycles. He understands that they don't even make parts for them anymore.., ie: the rear hub gear system. My rode bike needed a new cassette and chain, they worked on it. Then I try riding up Hwy 39 and nearly hit the ground when I shifted high high. I know riding those gears is not ideal, i also know your chain and pedals should not get stuck if that happens. I took the bike back to the shop, the young lady tried to convince me of that being normal, and that it was a "safety mechanism" to alert me not to ride those gears. I just took my bike home and came back when Steve was there, one look and he noticed the chain was a link too short! It was fixed, but it wasn't shifting correctly, then he tried to convince me that I just needed to pump my shifter a few times!!! At this point, I was irritated I said no, I am not doing that. All it needed was a minor adjustment and some lube, eventually the bike seemed ok. I ride long and fast, reason why I rather pay an "expert" to do the repairs because i am not a mechanic. I need to trust that my bike is going to respond when i am riding 40 miles an hour, literally is a matter of life and death. It Is hard to trust their repairs anymore. read more

I purchased a bike here in 2021. It was a light blue Retrospec Beaumont. The price was reasonable. The people working were friendly and helpful. They were knowledgeable. They helped me attach the bike lock holder free of charge. I came in multiple times to ask questions about the bike and they were responsive each time. I would recommend this place. read more

Steve has always been so kind to me each time I have come into his store. He is very friendly and goes out of his way to help his customers. Right before I went on my trip to Lourdes I asked if he could look at the PSi of my wheelchair tires. To my surprise, they had less than 5 PSI of air when they should have had 120 PSi. After he helped me I asked how much the service was? He told me it was free and to enjoy it trip to Lourdes. This meant so much to me. I have going to Steve's bike shop since I moved to Altadena in July of 1974. I have never had a bad experience in all of these years. The staff is always forthright in determining what is the resolution for any and every issue that I have with every bicycle I bring to them to fix. As long as I'm alive, and I am to ride a bike, I will seek out Steve's bike shop to take care of all of my bicycle needs. I really don't leave a lot of yelp reviews, you can check my profile. Only when something kinda lame happens do I decide to post things. I'm a black guy and not the threatening kind and I'm kinda shy. As I walked in, they were both busy helping other customers do I didn't say anything because I'm not rude. I stood in this shop for about 10 mins patiently waiting to be spoken to, as the owner and the young lady working in the store both were very helpful to everyone else in the store but me. They even helped the two that walked in after me, still without saying a word to me as I patiently had been waiting in line. I will be saying 'they' a lot because I didn't get the chance to meet them and don't know who they are, I can only assume the store owner and his employee. They were extremely polite and friendly to everyone in the store, and I'm sure everyone but me had a totally different experience. I, however, was the only person of color in the store at the time and I didn't feel comfortable in that moment anymore. I don't like to cause a scene so I quietly walked out of the store and put my bike back into my car after they skipped over me. I still stood there and waited another 5 minutes before I left, still nothing. Not anyone cared to ask me why I was leaving after obviously coming in to have my bike looked at. For whatever reason they decided not to speak to me, the same as they had all the other patrons that walked into the store, I can't tell you. They really do seem like nice people, I just really felt insignificant in that moment and maybe they didn't realize it. Either way bad experience for me and won't be going back although I doubt my business will be sorely missed. As a black man I realize that I may be overly sensitive to this sort of thing, but in any world it is horrible customer service to not speak to someone for 5 minutes and then pass over him in line for other people without saying a word to him. I dropped by my Centurion on Sunday for a tune up. Picked up a few days later. Still have to ride but seeing how smooth the crank and every moves and shifts, I wish I would have written down the work done. Will be bringing it here again and can't wait to actually ride. This bike store is a local gem!!!! I travel to Pasadena on business often and have come here for various reasons for many years and the experience has always been top notch. This month I wanted a bike to ride while in town for three weeks that was affordable and dependable, looks not that important. Once AGAIN Steve's Bikes came through with flying colors. The bike not only looks awesome, it was affordable and is dependable. After a three year break from travel, it was so nice to be cruising the Pasadena residential streets - and alleys - again. My local bike shop is the bomb. I bought cruisers for my daughter and myself in August and Steve was so helpful in assisting us in finding the perfect type of bikes for the type of bikers we are. I've never purchased a bike before and had no idea how to find a quality bike that would fit my size and usage. I knew in order to get my monies worth and get something I would be satisfied with, I need to go to an expert. Steve was even so kinds as to deliver the bikes to our house since I wasn't able to ride them back. It was an overall informative, pleasant and no pressure shopping experience which loved. Fast forward to today, I noticed my bike was riding a little rough and called the shop on my lunch break asking if I could bring it by for a check. Dropped it off around 1:30 and it was ready and waiting for me and as good as new by 5:30 when I went to pick it up. Now my bike is riding buttery smooth again through the city. I went to Steve's after 2 LBS in my area said they could not fix the left ultegra shifter st-6700. I thought the return spring was broken. Steve looked at it and in 1 minute he fixed it. He said "springs" don't normally break, it must have just got out of the seat/notch. OMG what a savior. He as intimate knowledge of the internals of the shifters. What a great experience. OK, where do I begin? Let's just say I got "STEVED"! I brought my old bike in for a tune-up and $91 and SEVEN WEEKS LATER I got the call that my bike was done. Seriously Steve, I went to you specifically to support small, local business' and this is what happens. Steve didn't keep his word on timelines and communication was unreliable on his end. Not only that, but the bike came back with crusted dirt and rusted parts. I mean when you spend near a hundred bucks for a tune-up, you would hope some effort would be made to give it once over on aesthetics. Nada. Even the bike chain came back dry. I mean I'm no bike expert, but aren't bike chains supposed to be greased and/or lubed? I didn't think they'd be dried up after a "tune-up." I got "STEVED" alright. He even had the nerve to say he didn't charge me for labor. You know, he might be right. I'm beginning to wonder if he didn't charge me labor because he never actually did any labor. The worst part of all of this is my bike rides jerky and the alignment is off. Part of the issue is that he overcommits and makes promises he can't keep. On three separate occasions, he said he'd have my bike ready only to get back to me one of those times to share an update. Then, he'll tell you that he'll reach out to you but he doesn't. He goes Ghost Sniper on you and disappears. It got to the point where it was comical. Any owner who has a customer-first philosophy would have tried to make things right. Instead, Steve gave me the treatment and in doing so, lost a potential life-long returning customer. You see, I'm as loyal as can be when I'm treated fairly and made to feel like I matter. So disappointing, Steve. You botched this job up BIG TIME on so many levels. read more

So here is the story... I bought a Frankenstein bike on Craigslist. Took it to Steve. No bull$4!t about it. He told me exactly what could be fixed under the tune-up and what would not be. Not like those other places that just make you pay just to tell you what's wrong. During tune-up, it turned into a nightmare. But Steve soldiered through. He stayed open an hour and a half past closing just to finish the job. He even threw in a chain and cabling. Steve's is a consummate professional shop that harkens back to a time of men keeping their word. At Steve's, a handshake is as good as a guarantee. Just rode my bike 25 gruelling miles. Steve is a Master mechanic, and I've brought more than my share of fubar projects to prove it. I had a stem frozen into an old fork from a Laguna 26" that I had cut to remove. I thought the fork was junk but steve managed to extract the frozen piece of stem. I wouldnt take my bike anywhere else on this side of LA. Beautiful shop as well. read more

I called Steve's Bike Shop to get information about the types of bicycles they carried in the shop. I'm looking for a specific item, and I didn't want to make the drive only to be disappointed. Rather than listening to what I needed and answering my questions, Steve insisted I visit the store that same afternoon as it was "better to talk about bikes and look in person." Although he was borderline condescending, I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he wanted to provide topnotch service that could only be done in person. I confirmed the store's hours for the day and made the trek. He must have decided to close the shop early for that day because it was closed when I arrived - a good hour and a half before his stated closing time. Frustrating.
