The Cupcake Store's cupcakes are fantastic. They're moist and very rich with a robust flavor. The icing is fantastic and so is their dense cake. However, my fiance and I came in for a wedding consultation and the whole appointment seemed rushed. Yvette couldn't get us out of the store with our taster minis fast enough - we had questions we wanted to ask that seemed to not get answered. There was very little feedback about the cake design we wanted, and lacked any pricing information. She seemed like she had better things to do and we simply want the best for our wedding. We purchased 8 cupcakes for a dinner party tonight. When we opened the box, the majority were toppled over and haphazardly placed in the box. We had to scrape them off with a knife to get any of the frosting with our cupcakes. Overall, great cupcakes but terrible service. read more

Not from the area but was in Santee for a business meeting. Saw this while driving by and thought I would pick up some cupcakes for the kids at home. I was disappointed by the customer service. After reading other reviews it seems like this lady is the owner and she comes off as a short and confrontational. I'm big on giving small businesses chances but they have to win at customer service. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that the customer service is bad. And I do believe it is the owner who comes at you with an attitude. I'm glad other people encountered this problem or else I might have suspected rascism. When I entered her shop with my friend she looked at us like oh God what are you doing here. It was our first time in and she was very impatient waiting for us to decide. I asked her if the Gluten-free red velvet cupcake was dye free, as most people with that allergy require both. It was not dye free but just asking her a question seemed to set her over the edge. I quickly picked some out and left before she thought of us as cheap. I couldn't be more disappointed this shop doesn't close until 5pm and literally had almost nothing on their shelves. And then when asked if they where made this morning she gave me a rude response and said of course. I then proceeded to ask if I got this one cupcake could they add frosting since they charge $2.75 a cupcake and have barely any frosting on them. TURNED AWAY THE KIDS. So, all the kids were excited for their field trip to the Cupcake Store. Upon their arrival, they were turned away and ignored. They would not answer the door! Thank you Santee Library for taking in our broken hearted 3 year old. He had been looking forward to this for over a week! Eventually, they acknowledged the kids and let them in, but were not very nice to them. Hopefully they are nicer to other customers and kids. Ok sorry but I am not a fan nor will I buy their cupcakes again. My girlfriend is a baker so I know how things should taste. Their buttercream frosting is gritty when it should be smooth, light and airy. Their chocolate cake is not sweet and tastes like they use cheap cocoa powder. Their lemon cupcake which was supposedly made with real lemon juice and zest, clearly isn't. It tasted artificial and the buttercream was too sweet for the cake. Besides the buttercream being wrong, they should have cream cheese frosting since it is a classic frosting on cakes like carrot cake and red velvet. Besides the cupcakes, the price is a bit much, $1.50 for a mini cupcake that is 2-3 bites is overpriced. I'd see paying that if the cupcake were exceptional, but they aren't. Overall, I was extremely dissatisfied with this store. I'll go to Cups or have my girlfriend bake them for me. read more

Went into the store on April 25th late morning to purchase 30 ( 5 of each different flavor- not all of one flavor)mini cupcakes. The lady behind the counter who seemed pretty confident with her rude attitude told me what a problem it was for me to buy so many cupcakes. She proceeded to explain to me how me buying so many was going to leave her with not much to sell throughout the day. I guess I'm missing something here.....I thought retail, restaurants, bakeries and stores want to sell. Why get pissie with a customer that wants to buy your merchandise?!!! DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!! The cupcakes they sell are amazing, however such poor customer service makes you not want to be back. So unfortunate. Not impressed at all...I purchased a daily deal, so I felt a little less taken...the "service" is forced, to say the least. The attitude seems a bit as if they feel they are doing you a favor by being in business. The storefront is more reminiscent of a check cashing store, than a "gourmet" bakery. If you're going to charge those kind of prices, then the experience should live up to it...the feel is that of a PTA bake sale, and definitely not what one would expect in an actual business. I just discovered this place. I used to drive all the way to La Jolla to go to Sprinkles, but now I know that was a waste of time and gas. The Cupcake Store is so much better. First of all, Sprinkles cupcakes do not have fillings, which is ironic, since all of the cupcakes made on Food Network's Cupcake Wars, where one of the judges is the founder of Sprinkles, always have fillings. Secondly, the cupcakes at Sprinkles get a 0 out of 10 when it comes to decorations, since every cupcake at Sprinkles only has a simple fondant circle on top, and on Cupcake Wars, presentation is a big deal. The cupcakes at The Cupcake Store are beautifully decorated and all different, unique, and creative. The frostings are to-die-for. OMG! The vegan chocolate cupcake topped with fresh strawberries blew me away. You have to check out this place, and support small business while you're at it. read more

Oh how I crave the cupcake store's delicious cupcakes. I tried their German Chocolate cupcake (German Chocolate Fusion, I believe was the name) and others in my group tried their bacon and maple syrup cupcake and a peanut butter cupcake. All of them were beyond tasty and the most moist cake I have ever eaten. The staff was fantastic, too. I think it may be a family-owned business, the girl in front said, "grandma is testing out new things in the back" and an older woman came out and showed us a lovely looking ladybug cupcake. Both women were very friendly and were kind enough to chat and talk about the business while we looked over their offerings. The space is small but very clean and spacious. There was no indoor seating but there are benches in the plaza outside that you can sit at while enjoying their cupcakes. They have two sizes of cupcakes, mini and regular, so it's a great place to get cupcakes for kids if you don't want them to have too much sugar. I highly recommend them. I went to get cupcakes with my friend today since the weather was too cold for a yogurt. I planned on sitting and having some coffee after I ordered but there was no seating :(. The man working at the counter was very nice and gave us some great free samples. The strawberry margarita and the guiness cupcake were delicious. I took some cupcakes to go...the Andies Candies and the German chocolate. Both were delicious. I was walking by on my way to the library and decided to give this cupcake store a chance. Honestly, I was surprised to see something so trendy in East County. I opted for the mini carrot cake and I was surprised the price was so cheap! $1.50 and $2.50 for large ones. I can't believe other reviewers on here think that this palace is expensive. I'm so glad that we found this gem that just opened in Coronado. We went in today and had a chocolate peanut butter, a mancake, and a chocolate mint. We took a pupcake to go for our dog. Oh. My. Goodness. These are absolutely delicious cupcakes. The frosting is not too sweet and balances perfectly with the cupcakes. The owner was lovely and nice and made me feel like my kids and I were important customers. My only problem was that they change the menu weekly and my waistline is going to be affected as I feel the need to taste their many flavors.Do not miss this place. It is worth it! I tried this place a couple times after they opened. There is nothing special or "designer" about the cupcakes. Their flavors are bland, they have no decoration, and their prices are not favorable. I have bought better cupcakes pre-packaged at henrys. (4 for the same price of 1 cupcake at this store). And gluten free ones are more expensive and have no flavor. Dont waste your money!! I found this place as I was waiting for my kids while they were at the Santee library, I had some time to kill so I stroll through the mini mall. I was pretty excited that there was a new cupcake store near my house. I went and was expecting gourmet cupcakes. They weren't bad, but they weren't anything special for how much they cost. They are just plain, ordinary cupcakes really. I bought one and picked it up and it crumbled into pieces out of the flimsy paper onto the ground. I like to consider myself a cupcake connoisseur of sorts. I appreciate a good cupcake, heck even a mediocre one. IMHO there 2 key elements within a cupcake that either make em or break em. First is the cake itself. It needs to be moist not dry tasty but not to sweet. The second is obviously the frosting. Soft not crunchy and again tasty but not to sweet. The cupcake store some managed to get it perfect. I've been there a few times now and every time I've been, they have been spot on. Many cupcakes the cake itself is too sweet. These cakes are the perfect blend of taste and sweetness and are always moist. The frosting on these cupcakes is fantastic. As you can see from The pictures there isn't an overwhelming amount of frosting which for me kills a cupcake. I can't stress enough how well put together these cupcakes are. They are the right amount of taste, moistness, frosting an flavor without one overpowering the other. And best of all they are priced very reasonably. If you enjoy cupcakes and don't like overly sweet cake give this place a try, well worth it!! read more

I have been searching for my ideal carrot cake ever since Sambo restaurants closed in the early 1980s. I thought I'd never find one as good. In my opinion, the Cupcake Store's is even better.
