My wife asked if we could be seated outside, she was told "someone would get to us". We waited another 5 minutes and a couple walked in and walked outside and sat down. My wife asked another server the protocol of how we put our name down on a list or how we could get seated and she was told "if there was an open table just go sit down and a server would come to your table", we went and sat at an empty table. Another 15-20 minutes went by and still no one even spoke to us. If you want to enjoy a meal on the water save yourself some frustration and go elsewhere the only person there that has a clue is the bartender, he's great but he can't be everywhere and most of the servers stand around and chat. It sits tucked into the middle of a working shipyard and repair station, perched high on stilts, looking out over the boat canal that cuts toward Clear Lake. Boats nose in nearby. Machinery, water, salt air, and the honest clutter of a place that actually does something surround it. That, to me, is already a good sign. The place still has that new-restaurant sheen on it, but not in a sterile, corporate way. It was busy when we went--boaters, locals, the kind of crowd that usually knows where the good fried things live. There was something about it that reminded me of Outriggers under the bridge: casual, loud enough, coastal, and unpretentious in all the right ways. Now, the food. I ordered the shrimp basket, expecting the usual sad parade of frozen, breaded, food-service mediocrity. That is not what showed up. These were real Gulf Coast shrimp, plump and properly fried, with a batter that tasted homemade--cornmeal, spice, crunch, and restraint. Close to perfect, if we are being honest. And the hush puppies? Dangerous. The kind of side dish that stops being a side dish after the first bite. I could have sat there with a basket of those, a cold Shiner Bock, and called it dinner without complaint. The waitstaff and bar crew were friendly, quick, and seemed genuinely glad to be there, which is not nothing. Food came out fast. The whole experience had the rare pleasure of a place exceeding expectations without trying too hard. I went in unsure what to make of Sammy G's. It comes with very good mashed potatoes. I don't like most restaurants potatoes, so that's a bonus win. Really enjoyed, would get it again. The beer! They have a really good menu that rotates. They have local craft brews, in addition to your standard domestics. They also have ciders for those that don't fancy a beer. Our last visit I had a Belgian Tripel, and a Pumpkin Stout. Delish! You just don't see that often and I wanted to try it. The stars aligned and my family and I met up here for a weeknight dinner. Alvin is the true definition of a small town. It is just south of Pearland and life moves a little slower out here. Atleast for time being as it is becoming more developed now. The building itself is old and full of character. Everyone seemed to know each other. The staff was very welcoming and friendly, but service was a tad bit slow at times. My family isn't a big drinking family so we stuck with water and sodas, but they have quite a nice bar program here. They have a really impressive beer selection, a long list of specialty cocktails and lots of wine to choose from. I'm definitely coming back to check that out without the fam. For appetizers, we got an order of the scotch eggs and the Bavarian pretzel sticks. This was my first introduction to scotch eggs and a wonderful one at that. You really can't go wrong with anything wrapped in sausage and deep friend. It was a nice treat and something I will not be sharing next time. The pretzels were also very good. Our waitress suggested some cheese sauce to accompany those. These sticks of goodness were excellent. For my entree, I was stuck on a few items as their menu is pretty extensive. Our waitress said my option for the Pork Milanesa was the way to go, so I did. I've had milanesa at Mexican restaurants, but never in a tavern nor prepared this way. This was hand battered in panko and then topped with a mushroom gravy. It comes with broccoli and mashed potatoes but I substituted the veggie for mac and cheese. This dish was very good and the portions were very generous. Enough for me to have a full second meal minus the sides. The pork was thinly pounded and kept it's crunch even doused in gravy. The gravy was rich and very delicious. My family got a mix of items like the philly cheese steak, flat iron steak salad, tavern salad, and chicken fried steak. For research purposes and for my loyal readers, I tried everything. There wasn't anything that was bad to me. We were full so desserts didn't happen on this trip. Overall, Gordon Street Tavern is a solid spot that I would happily return to if in the area.
