Sammy G's Sammy G's is the kind of place you don't expect to win you over, which is exactly why it does. At first glance, it is not some gleaming waterfront temple to seafood. It sits tucked into the middle of a working shipyard and repair station, perched high on stilts, looking out over the boat canal that cuts toward Clear Lake. Boats nose in nearby. Machinery, water, salt air, and the honest clutter of a place that actually does something surround it. That, to me, is already a good sign. The place still has that new-restaurant sheen on it, but not in a sterile, corporate way. It was busy when we went--boaters, locals, the kind of crowd that usually knows where the good fried things live. There was something about it that reminded me of Outriggers under the bridge: casual, loud enough, coastal, and unpretentious in all the right ways. Now, the food. I ordered the shrimp basket, expecting the usual sad parade of frozen, breaded, food-service mediocrity. That is not what showed up. These were real Gulf Coast shrimp, plump and properly fried, with a batter that tasted homemade--cornmeal, spice, crunch, and restraint. Close to perfect, if we are being honest. And the hush puppies? Dangerous. The kind of side dish that stops being a side dish after the first bite. I could have sat there with a basket of those, a cold Shiner Bock, and called it dinner without complaint. The waitstaff and bar crew were friendly, quick, and seemed genuinely glad to be there, which is not nothing. Food came out fast. The whole experience had the rare pleasure of a place exceeding expectations without trying too hard. I went in unsure what to make of Sammy G's. We went to Sammy G's just before HH ended (6:00). It certainly had a dive atmosphere; very loud--music and people! There were not a lot of 20-30 year olds, but a lot over 55ish. My husband and I are a lot older. We opted for an appetizer of Fried pickles and jalapeño. Plus a nice cold beer; Tiki that was very good. It was our servers first day and she did a great job. Ambiance: There is inside and outdoor seating. We sat outside to see the view of the water and many boats passing. If it gets too hot, theres umbrellas. There is also live music downstairs which was super cool. The service is great! Blackened salmon: The salmon was a great portion. The flavor on it was amazing and it was a great sized filet. The fries were also so good! It was a unique shape and it was flavorful. Although, I would not recommend getting the mac and cheese. It wasn't very cheesy and it didnt really taste like classic mac and cheese. Steak w/ crab meat: The crab meat on top was such a nice touch and so flavorful! I dined here for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, even though it was a bit different than usual. It was cold outside, but the interior was nice and warm, which was a definite plus. Since it was a slow night for an 8 PM in the middle of the week, we decided to sit at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and helped us with our drinks right away. Other patrons, who seemed to be regulars, greeted us and made us feel like we belonged there. It became a bit tricky when the bartender took our order, as she had to check with the chef regarding the availability of certain fish. This made it clear that the items they offered were fresh. A few minutes later, the chef called her back to explain that they didn't have some of the sides we requested. She returned to inform us that their menu was changing, so we chose different sides. Once we received our food, it was apparent why they had limited menu options--the quality was outstanding. All of our dishes were made in-house and very fresh. My husband opted for the ribeye, which was so tender that he was able to cut it with just a butter knife. I had the seared cod, and it was excellent. Overall, it was a great experience, and we will definitely be back. One other plus was we were told they just hired someone to make in-house desserts! This place is a gem. read more

The location is incredible! I loved being in the water! It reminded me of days at the old outriggers where I worked in highschool! I was underwhelmed with my salad with seared tuna maybe if it was cut up and crusted the tuna more instead of one big check I wouldn't liked it more, but the Cesar salad and green goddess dressing was Good! The tornado fries were the Star! My friends got a grilled chicken salad which looked good they said the chicken was juicy, my other friend got the salmon which I tried and was fabulous! First of all. They aren't sure what time they open. Breakfast menu says 9am and Yelp says open but no one knew when we showed up. Don't do the egg scramble. Do not recommend pickup orders from Sammy Gs. I was on vacation from the West Coast and ordered crawfish for pickup. Unfortunately, all of them were so mushy you couldn't peel them. My daughter talked to the restaurant management, and they said no problem, we will refund or credit the credit card. That was two weeks ago, and three follow-up calls later, they keep saying, "We will refund," but guess what... still no refund. Because I knew we had not napkins utensils or plates...he couldn't hear me so I clapped my hands to get his attention, that didn't work but another table was able to get his attention. He came back I said we need plates and something to eat with like a fork and napkins would be nice. I went upstairs and spoke with the "manager"! He gave me lip service and said he would be down soon to make it right...30 minutes later we just left! Just bad all the way around!! Not worth the money!! And the manager looks just as bad as headphone boy at this point!! DONT GO!!!!!!! Waste of time and money! I would have thought being built up in the air over the water there would be a great view of the marina and waterway there on the waterfront. Problem is when you sit down at a table you cannot see out the windows, windows are over your head. I think they would be better served with high top tables so guests can enjoy the view. We had the El Lago fish sandwich, looked good, tasted good but was not designed to fit between two buns without the sandwich falling apart in your hands and having to eat it with a fork. A little more thought might be invested on design, otherwise I would be happy with just the fish without the bun. Menu looked great, will have to come back at another time. read more
