I met some friends for lunch today. Since it was Sunday we had to use the brunch menu, but it had all the dishes we wanted. We were able to get a table on the ground floor because stairs are an issue for me. The holiday decorations were fun. Service was good but not intrusive. We all enjoyed our meals. I loved the trout crudo, which was a fun presentation and absolutely delicious. I also ordered the fruit, which turned out to be a huge bowl, so I have enough for my lunch tomorrow. One friend had the grilled chicken sandwich because she was intrigued by the combination of ingredients. Not sure she would order it again, but I noticed she ate every bite. My boyfriend and I were in town visiting some friends in Philly and they took us to this amazing brunch spot. You absolutely have to get the house made ricotta and french fries! These...were the best french fries I've ever had. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft inside, perfectly cooked. Ricotta toast was delicious as well. Brioche french toast and royale benedict were lovely too. Coming from NYC, this was also such an affordable brunch as well. All in all great service and great vibes. It's exactly what I pictured for an upscale British pub. You expect a bar, dark decor and furniture and the three staples: fish and chips, shepherds pie, bangers and mash. I got the fish and chips and lightly golden brown, not oily, great crisp from the batter even after dousing it with malt vinegar. Cod was flakey and juicy. We also got a cheeseboard for the table which came out fairly quickly. My fries were a bit underdone but I just dealt with it as I was hungry. I had the best Caesar salad I've ever had in my life here. While this is a bold statement, 2 of my coworkers also had the Caesar salad, and they both said the same thing! I was able to make a reservation to the Dandelion, and we were sat in the dog room. If you're a dog-lover, like me, then you're going to love the funky decor that you're surrounded with. It is a large burger on a bun piled high with good stuff like onions, lettuce, smoked bacon, cheddar and their sauce. The fries are thick cut and very nice. They come in a metal holder that is very hot to keep them warm. I enjoyed a nice stout with my meal, and a couple of shots of Jameson... Solid Stephen Starr spot that hits on everything you would want from a British pub near Rittenhouse square. If you come on Sunday you can have Sunday Roast, if you come any other day you get a lovely menu of options that include some of my favorite including Welsh Rarebit, a really huge and fantastic burger, great salmon, and a rabbit pie that is so rich and wonderful you have to love it! The drink menu is strong, and the ambiance is the real winner here with a vibe downstairs that does feel like a pub, then up a few steps you have a nice relaxing area by the fireplace, and then upstairs you have dining rooms that make you feel fully transported to England. Had the chance to stop at The Dandelion after the Rittenhouse Market this afternoon. Great building and ambiance, with a quirky little bi-level configuration. The lunch menu is full of inviting British influences, and we ended up with the cider steamed mussels, the warm beef sandwich and the croquettes. The mussels were fresh and well steamed, in a wonderful broth- with a nice arm of bread for dipping. The warm beef sandwich was incredible, on a nice grilled bread, dressed with horseradish and warm beef gravy; great texture without being overly sloppy. Note: don't wear white! The croquettes had a wonderful crisp, and a beyond great paprika saffron mayo. We did have issues with slow service, and rotating service that did not inform each other what was needed - I had to stop them, tell them the service needed to change, and put it back in their hands. The server and manager were AWESOME about it, apologized for the mixup and the rest of our visit was as expected! Will be back 1) for AFTERNOON TEA!, and 2) Sunday Roast Dinner! Note - if you aren't headed pony up to the bar, after walking thru the front door, head to the curtained doorway to the right, walk up a few stairs, and you will reach the hostess station. 9/10 people including us didn't really know. read more

So this is a tough one because Dandelion is lost amongst 4 and five star restos. It's not as good as Starr's other properties nearby like Barclay Prime, how could it be? It's a casual pub. But across town I gave Ten Stone, a middling gastropub that is reliable but nothing special, four stars also, and Dandelion is more refined in every way. No one tells us how to rate places, there is no "English pub" to compare it to in Center City. I have one complaint; my "pint of prawns" was not a pint but an icecream glass filled with ice and six prawns, not what I expected at all. I give this a "4" simply because I can't put it in the same class as Parc or Barclay Prime (for example). But if I compared it to other gastropubs, it would easily be at the top of the heap. read more

On a Saturday night we made reservations and came for dinner. The restaurant itself is a cute pub vibe. It seems like an old house becuase there's an upstairs with multiple rooms and the space is quite big compared to what it looks like outside. It is a multi level restaurant with dim lighting and an old English esq setting. The servers were attentive and quick despite the size of our group. I ordered the somerset sour & the citrus punnet which were perfectly mixed and just right. They brought out a bread basket and oh my lord it was good. It came with a side of butter which really hit the spot. Now to the main course. I ordered the Pan Seared Salmon with tomato curry chickpea stew, dukkah crusted salmon, lime roasted cauliflower. Talk about yummy! The contrast of the seated fish with curry was excellent! I give the dish a 10/10. We concluded our meal with an assortment of little bundtlets delicious! We stopped here for dinner before a comedy show, around 8:15. When you step inside, it feels like you're transported to a British pub with a really cool room decorated with dogs everywhere. Dog curtains, dog figurines, dog pictures. The only way it could get better is if the room was decorated with cats. It was a little too dark, so we had some trouble reading the menu but our eyes adjusted eventually. We were given some bread and butter at the start. I ordered the root vegetable soup and the rabbit pie and my husband had the steak and chips. I was expecting more of a stew-y kind of soup, but this one was blended. Very good soup and VERY filling. I probably would've been fine just getting that for dinner. The rabbit pie was ok...I'm not sure what I was expecting but it was a little different. I wasn't the biggest fan of the texture, I had a few squeaky bites with a lot of onion and some soft bacon. Maybe too much onion for me. The puff pastry on top was perfectly flaky. As a previous Yelper previously said before, it tastes like a chicken had a baby with a lamb. The meat was tender. It just wasn't for me. The steak and chips were good. The steak was juicy and cooked perfectly for me (it was med rare, though my husband ordered med). It came with a salad. Overall, a very hearty dinner for us, though I wasn't totally impressed. The restaurant was very busy. Lots of servers running around but the service wasn't bad. I was a little disappointed with the bathroom, it was very rundown. I get it is an older building but it could've been cleaner. Overall the food was a 7/10. Not horrible, not incredible, but paired with the ambiance, it made for a nice dinner. I should mention, if you have trouble climbing stairs then this place may not be for you unless you stay on the first floor. read more

We have yet to meet a Starr restaurant we don't love. This place was beautifully decorated for Christmas, and we were happy to be tucked away in one of the many intimate rooms on the second floor. They have a delicious beer and drink menu, which we enjoyed. For food, we started with the House-Made Ricotta and Dandelion Salad, and then had The Dandy Burger and Lamb Shepherd's Pie for our entrees. We finished with the Chocolate Set Cream. Wonderful. Looking for a relaxed but 'serious' pub, and The Dandelion sprouted up out of a 'Best of' list here on Yelp. It helped that The Dandelion was a simple 15 minute walk from where we stayed, so that all signs pointed to trying this place out. From the moment I saw the building on the corner, I had a good feeling. Walking into the building, it was clear all was right in the world. It was busy, and at first no room at the bar. There are three (?) stories to the building with several rooms and many tables for dinner, brunch et al. With time on my side, I lingered for a bit, noting that a number of people appeared to have recently sat at the bar. I took in the room. Many walks of life here. Upscale, and also more everyday folks, too. A smattering of Eagles fans savoring the day's victory among couples and others. A couple got up from the bar as they had a reservation for dinner. I sat comfortably, hung my coat up, and eventually tried a couple drafts. The bartender was friendly and helpful. I enjoyed a Lager from Philadelphia (Mainstay Helles). Straightforward with 'German' quality to it. I tried a half Wells Bombardier (an English Bitter), which had almost a deep chocolate overtone. Before I could order any food at the bar, I learned that family wanted to stop by for dinner. I spoke to the Hostess and requested a table. After about 30 minutes, my party arrived and we were seated. Sunday night features their Traditional Roast (including Yorkshire pudding, watercress, roast potatoes, vegetable of the day, horseradish sauce, beef gravy). Though very tempting, it seemed too much that night. We started with the House Made Ricotta for the table. Delicious. Served with sourdough toast. The ricotta was just sweet enough, perfectly spreadable and we loved it. Bread and butter also arrived - salted sourdough bread and a darker, almost pumpernickel. All so good. Their sister restaurant does their baking, the waiter told us. Our table had the Fish and Chips, the Lamb Shepherd's Pie, and the Tandoori Chicken. I had the Tandoori Chicken, which more than one person told me may be the best item on the menu. A large portion (close to a half chicken), full of flavors yet not at all overpowering. I liked it. The chicken breast was a tad overdone, but with the cucumber cilantro yogurt and cocoanut basmati rice, easily forgivable. Almonds, pistachios, raisins are nestled in the rice. The Fish and Chips is comprised of line-caught cod and thrice cooked chips. The fish was crunchy where it needed to be, and moist where you wanted it to be. Not overly greasy, either. The chips are brined, steamed, and then fried making for a very satisfying spud. Vinegar, ketchup and tartar sauce accompanies. The Shepherd's Pie looked good, hearty and compact. I did not try it as it was ordered by a family friend whom I'd just met. Service is good. Food is great. Ambience is awesome. Great music, played at just the right volume -- not too loud, but easily heard. The house itself has warm touches thoughout. And the bar, where it all started for me, is handsomely decked in a dark cherry wood. TV does exist here, but it does not overtake the place. Watch if you want. Above the TV is a cheeky homage to any pomp and circumstance for England. After all, Philadelphia has its history, too. read more

I also had mentioned in the booking that it was a double birthday celebration. No mention of it by the staff. The chicken pate appetizer was devine and I highly recommend. The tartare was average and we didn't finish it. Their fries are excellent . The aperol spritz was first made with flat prosecco so I returned it. The second was subpar. The Irish coffee was a disappointment to say the least. The waiter said they do something different with the cream???? Seriously it's a simple drink to make. As both of us are bar tenders from Dublin this was a complete fail and embarrassing offering. In general the entire experience was a disappointment and I don't recommend.
