I stopped in with 2 friends to escape the rain with a happy hour drink. It was nice to be able to sit at a table for Happy Hour instead of the bar. The restaurant and bar have dark wood with soft lighting. It was a relaxing atmosphere. The host/server was super nice. He brought water over and took our order. He also helped us pick a good cocktail! We each had a different cocktail. All were expertly mixed and very good and also strong! The cocktails were $11 at Happy Hour. We didn't eat but plan on going back to try the food! The Wayward is participating in the 250th cocktail trail. Different hotel have a specialty cocktail celebrating the 250th birthday of the US. The Wayward is a participating bar on The Philadelphia Cocktail Trail in commemoration of America's 250th birthday. I've walked by here many times, but yesterday was my first time actually going in. I visited with a fellow Yelp Elite and one of her co-workers for Happy Hour. We were seated at a table near the bar and our server, who was also at the host podium, was Dontay. He was the kindest and sweetest man. He went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. We each opted to get one drink and no food. If you want to get the wind knocked out of you after one drink, this is your spot. The drinks were STRONG. I ordered the Market Street Muse and I could barely taste the limoncello. The vodka and basil were the most prominent flavors. I was feeling good. I'm rating this establishment four stars because the drinks on The Philadelphia Cocktail Trail were essentially existing drinks they had on their current menu but with different names. Same ingredients. I was hoping to see something new or related to America's 250th. Overall, though, the space was very calm and clean and I enjoyed being there. All the menu items sounded great, too. This place is beautiful. I absolutely loved the decor. The staff were attentive and service was good. I went on Cinco de Mayo and of course ordered a margarita (they offered classic, spicy mango, and mezcal $10 ea). I ordered the classic and it was done just right. I also ordered 2 chicken tinga tacos ($6 ea) and an order of hand cut frites ($9). The food came out hot like it's supposed to so I was happy. The tacos were bland so I added some pesto dipping sauce that accompanied my frites (fries) and it helped but I don't ever have to eat the taco again. The fries were seasoned just right. I had the steak frites medium rare and my friends had ordered a few dishes to share. A few had also ordered medium rare but unfortunately all of ours came out to be more medium. The meatballs were quite pricey and there were only 2 but it was redeemed by its taste. The grilled avocado was quite literally a grilled avocado with toast that you have to spread yourself. I was staying at the Canopy and decided to have a late night dinner. I ordered steak and frites, turkey club sandwiches with side salad and the pizza. Absolutely delicious turkey club! I don't even like turkey clubs but my mom wanted one and I had one bite and then I wanted the whole sandwich. The salad was a nice light vinaigrette with mixed greens, cucumbers, tomatoes and pickled onions - super refreshing. The steak was cooked perfectly but I like a different cut than the one they gave me. The fries were top notch thick cut steak fries and well salted. The pizza was definitely house made and although I don't like pesto on mine it was still good. I'd highly recommend if you're staying at the hotel or want some solid American cuisine to hit this spot. read more

The only vegan option on the menu was oatmeal, which sounded perfect: warm and filling. When the oatmeal arrived, I started adding the toppings but noticed a rim of butter around the edge of the plate. I asked about it, and sure enough, they mix butter into it. There were six of us and we spent about $80 each and everyone was disappointed with their meals. The service was lacking as well. Our server never even came back to check on us after we got our food. Her 20% tip was automatically included, so I guess she didn't think it was necessary to bother. My meal came out last and after everyone was almost finished eating because she put in the wrong order. We came here for happy hour, and we had a pretty good time. It was interesting because we were seated in the "lounge" area which was pretty open and we were instructed to sit wherever we'd like. The inside was very well decorated and there were plenty of comfy couches to sit on as well as standard tables with chairs. As for the food, we tried their white wine and cocktails that were available for happy hour (the cocktails at the time were a Mojito and a French 75). We also got an order of the Truffle Salt Butterfly Chips, which were surprisingly delicious. With the happy hour deal, the cocktails were $8 and the bar menu items were 50% off. My family and I came to the wayward for a dinner on an otherwise busy Friday night and this was one of the only places that had reservations for 7 PM. We came in and it was not very packed, so we were a bit nervous about our meals. I ordered one of the specials for the day since the other pasta dish was out of stock. It was a ravioli with short rib inside and pesto. I was a bit disappointed with my dish, the ravioli was undercooked, not even al dente, but the seasonings and taste was pretty all right. My brother ordered the cauliflower and fries, which he mentioned was good. And my sister and mom ordered the salmon dish, which they both enjoyed overall. It did take quite a while for us to receive everyone's dish, and some peoples food came out before others. Additionally, my sister sent back the fried oysters and ordered the salmon instead, and it took quite a long time for them to bring out the food. By the time she received it, we were getting ready to leave. The ambience is quite nice as it is a hotel chic lounge environment, but I would not find myself coming back here again. read more

The Wayward is a solid breakfast/brunch spot with an excellent cocktail game. It's located in the Canopy by Hilton Hotel, so it can be a little confusing to find as you either have to go through the hotel or find the labeled entrance on the side of the hotel building. It does have just a tiny bit of a hotel restaurant vibe, but if you're in the right spot, it's actually pretty cute. We really enjoyed having drinks here. There's limited seating at the bar, but they have a variety of types of seating around the bar that may be used to enjoy your drinks --- tables, couches, armchairs, etc. My favorite cocktail was the Girard Spritz, a vodka-sparkling wine drink with strawberry and thyme that is just delightful. I also had the Citron Presse, which is made with local gin, honey, and lemon and was a very pretty drink. My friend also enjoyed the Broken Flowers, which had a unique flavor profile and looked pretty awesome with the straw through a flower blossom. Food-wise, I opted for the Smoked Salmon Sammy, a classic lox on an Everything bagel with all the usual fixings, which was exactly what I wanted it to be. My friend ordered the Short Rib Hash with sweet potato, peppers, onions, and poached eggs and was quite happy with it. Overall, a good option. Would be interested in returning for oysters and one of their many variations on the classic French 75. Definitely worth the stop if you're staying at the hotel! read more

I've been to wayward a handful of times with some coworkers, usually Saturday mornings. The last time I went with a group of coworkers (all of us Black), and the way we were treated was absolutely unacceptable. Our waitress was very nice, however the manager, an older blonde woman, was hovering over her shoulder, and around our table constantly from the moment we walked in. I had never seen or interacted with this woman then other handful of times I've been. We were seated and ordered our drinks and food, I ordered a French 75, and things were more or less fine. We flagged down our waitress for a second round of drinks, and the waitress came over, we placed our orders and she went toward the bar, we watched her manager pull her aside to tell her something, the waitress came back to the table, very visibly embarrassed and *whispered* to us, "I'm very sorry and I'm not sure why, but manager told me I'm only allowed to serve your table bloody marys, and mimosas. Again, I'm not sure why I'm a bartender as well, and I made your first drinks and they were fine right?". Something smelled off immediately, however we all ordered a round of mimosas, which of course were horribly watered down. The manager continued to linger around the table, and I locked eyes with her staring at us from the cash register multiple times. Our food came and we ate, I caught the manager once again talking to (what looked to me like lecturing) the waitress. She came back over, once again visibly embarrassed and again whispered to us, "How would you like your check split?". We weren't asked how the food was, if we would like anything else, simply prompted to leave. I find it particularly unacceptable to treat anyone this way, especially paying customers, even more so hospital workers, in scrubs, freshly off of our shift. Absolutely no grace or consideration based solely on the premise of our skin color. I also feel so bad for that poor waitress, it seemed like she was straining to get out words whenever she would come to us after being spoken to by the manager. Nomz: Started off with the French onion soup, which was really good; the bread, cheese and broth were balanced and super tasty. Shared the steak frites with cauliflower to make it a bit more healthy. The sauce on the steak frites was delicious, we couldn't get enough of it, the steak was good quality. The portion wasn't huge but it was enough for us. The fries were also very tasty, good balance between soft and crunchy. The cauliflower was very flavorful, loved every bit of it, wish I could make like this at home. Drinks: I had the rose and it was well balanced and not too sweet. Service: There are waiters/waitresses that you just remember, Liam will be one of those. I ordered the Wayward Breakfast with scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, and potatoes, as well as a vanilla oat latte and mimosa. My friend ordered the breakfast sandwich and the same latte. We enjoyed everything and it did not feel like overwhelming portions. Our server was lovely and the restaurant is super cute. Feels hidden where it is so more signage could be helpful to attract people. Plus, the hours are funky. I thought breakfast ended too early, especially since they offer mimosa carafes. FUN FACT! When The Wayward first opened to the public on August 3, 2020 in the heart of COVID, I was their first customer!! To celebrate, I was given complimentary glasses of champagne. Talk about great service!! The ambiance of this brasserie is fabulous! It reminds me of the glitz and glamour of the "Roaring 20s" era in the Great Gatsby. So bumped it up to 2 stars. (I put more weight on food). Tuna crudo (my go to appetizer)- bland. Steak Frites - I was expecting so much more for $50 steak frites. But ignoring price, on the spectrum of below average vs average vs above average steak frites, these were slightly below average. The frites part was fine. I prefer an aioli over a mustard sauce, but mustard sauce was good. Cronuts. Haha. Man. These were essentially sugared raw croissants. The whole center was raw dough. This is a decent establishment in downtown Philly. It seems relatively well known in general, but for whatever reason none of our local friends had ever mentioned it to us. The only reason we stumbled across it was because we were staying in the canopy hotel. We came here several times during our weekend trip for drinks and once for dinner. The bar deserves five stars. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. It is a full bar, but they specialize in gin! They have probably around 30 varieties available. The staff will very generously educate you regarding the various types of gin and allow you to sample some before you choose a beverage. The restaurant itself might have been having an off night, but I have to give them only three stars. We came here on a Sunday evening with a reservation for our anniversary. We were a first seating as well. Since we were staying at the hotel we had reviewed the menu and despite a relatively short list of selections we had identified several items of interest. Unfortunately when we were seated the waiter informed us that the multiple items we were interested in were not available. Somehow they had run out of standard ingredients such as chicken! Understandably we needed some more time to rethink our order. Imagine our dismay upon our waiters return, when we placed our new order, and we were informed that in the five minutes that had passed lobster was also now off the menu - as another table had ordered the last portion! I don't begrudge another table ordering an item, but this was very poor service. You have seated us, and have witnessed our disappointment that multiple items are off the menu due to supply running out. It is your responsibility as a wait staff to inform us when you first seat us that there are only one or two servings of certain items left so that we can order it if we're interested before it runs out. We were the first seating and yet by the time we ordered other tables had used up the last of our second choice. Needless to say the meal was difficult to enjoy after that. We ordered several items that seemed palatable. I'm sure they were decently prepared, but nothing was going to overcome the disappointment of getting our third choice meal. This was a huge letdown. After the wonderful service at the bar Friday and Saturday, we changed our anniversary dinner plans for Sunday expecting the same level of quality and service. I will acknowledge that it is possible this was an off-night for the kitchen and wait staff, but the reality is we travel to Philly infrequently and therefore the odds of us returning to this location to give them a second chance is extremely low. I'm giving them four stars because the bar is amazing and you should definitely try it. But I would recommend you go elsewhere for any special meals. I would be willing to try this location for a casual lunch or dinner when I am simply too tired to wander far from the hotel. read more

Wanted to go on a nice dinner date with my boyfriend, and we saw this place had good reviews, so we came here. We decided to sit outside, and they did not give us a great table, so I was a little bit turned off by the place. However, where we dined did not reflect on the dining experience at all. We decided to start with the Corn Beignets, as I have never had a savory beignet before. These were delicious! They tasted similar to corn bread, but they were a bit fluffier and lighter. For our entrees, we got the Bronzino and the Asparagus. The Bronzino was incredible! The meat was very lemony and flaky, and it was cooked to perfection. After each bite, we were still shocked by how exceptional this tasted. The Asparagus was fairly good, especially because the eggs were pretty creamy and the truffled mushroom on top was very crunchy, creating a perfect texture experience. The asparagus itself was cooked normally, so the entree was fairly good, but the price was a little steep for what I got. As a HUGE chocolate person, I usually need a chocolate dessert. However, I put my faith in our waiter who suggested the Croquembouche, and I am so happy I did because OMG this was one of the best desserts I've ever had in my life. Piled high in a huge tower of heaven, these pastries were out of this world. The soft and light pastry cream was squished in between two donut-like buns covered in sugar for a perfect combination of creamy, doughy, and crunchy. To this date, my boyfriend still raves about this being one of his favorite restaurant experiences (mainly the Bronzino and Croquembouche). I would highly recommend this restaurant for a cute date night. And make sure to get a good table as some of their outdoor options are too makeshift and a bit uncomfortable to sit in. read more

Such a fantastic spot for Happy Hour! We were served by Lamar, who was so attentive and kind. He gave us great recommendations for nearby attractions and grabbed us everything we needed before we had to ask. Their happy hour oysters are delicious and so tasty with their Mignonette dressing. The server was very attentive and well informed on the menu. The cocktail list was awesome. I went with an old fashioned and it was very well made. We ordered the chowder, cheese plate and oysters. The chowder was good, but have had better. The cheese plate was good but too small for the price. For dinner, I got the duck salad and my wife got the steak frites. The salad was strange. The duck was incorporated in the croutons, which was weird. But the flavors were tasty. The steak was a bit tough and the fries were over salted. Overall, the food was just OK but the overall experience warrants a revisit, especially when the bar is open! read more

The decor and ambiance was A+. The food was not as impressive. We went here on a whim, on a Phillies playoff night, and there was no wait. It was a bit chilly out, so the warmth inside was welcome. I thought the soup du jour - butternut squash soup - was kind of lacking in flavor. I make this sometimes myself, and a little salt and pepper, even nutmeg goes far. I just felt like I wasted money on a very basic soup. The lobster mac n' cheese that the waitress raved about was similarly bland. Edible, but lacking quite a bit. There was really only one serviceable piece of the lobster laying on top of the pasta. My husband on the other hand liked his food. He had the steak and duck wings. So maybe it's what I ordered. We liked our waitress. She was fairly attentive. Hubs and I agreed the noise from the kitchen was a bit much at times though. One waiter in particular was very boisterous. While he seemed jolly, he was noisy in a subdued setting where I am sure people want intimacy and quiet. We could overhear his whole convo at times. My friend and I pulled up to the Wayward's cocktail truck and by no surprise there was a long moving line. While we waited, we had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Christmas tree and decor outside. Finally, when we reached the truck -- I ordered the yummy spiked hot chocolate with flamed marshmallow inside! Also, tried their fries w/ aioli sauce -- that was great too! As you can imagine, it was a cold December pandemic night and the hot chocolate helped to warm me up!! Went inside the fascinating Wayward to request to be seated outside for their happy hour! The Wayward is a wonderful new addition to Market East! We started on the gorgeous patio but the rain pushed us inside, which is also beautiful! We split oysters, Corn Beignets, Tomato Galette and a cheesy zucchini dish. Everything was delicious, I just wish the menu was a little more expansive. The burger seemed a little out of place and I wish there were some more large plate options.
