They removed 3 Arborvitae in my backyard, and chipped 'em. Then pruned my 30' parkway Mulberry, luckily a male with no berries. Crown clean deadwood and broken branches throughout canopy, thinned trunk/limb sucker growth through the lower 60% of the canopy in order to allow more sunlight penetration, chipped that and got everything away from the house. They worked quickly, safely and confidently. I was happy with the price, but I didn't shop extensively. Their responsiveness and evident expertise sold me. read more

we asked Davey in Chicago to trim our backyard trees in 2023 and again in 2024. On the first occasion the arborist came to make an assessment of our trees, then left to construct an estimated cost and to schedule time to do the work. All was pleasant. They never responded to our calls to actually schedule the work. I am guessing there were aspects of the job that were too difficult for them but no one ever stated this. On the second occasion they didn't show up to do the initial assessment which was scheduled several weeks after my scheduling call. read more

Auxilio came out to my property to inspect two River Birch trees that were suffering from iron deficiency. I accepted his bid in October 2020, and the work was supposed to be completed that Fall. Receiving no response from Davey Tree, and heading into Winter Auxilio said the best time to treat the trees was in the Spring, just as the trees were budding. When I called in the Spring of 2021,( having heard nothing from them ) I was told that I was "on the schedule" and the optimal time to do the work would be late Summer to early Fall ! At the end of September the trees were noticeably dying, and I had to have them taken down. About a week later the scheduler from Davey Tree called me saying that they had stopped by my property, and noticed that the trees were gone !!!! read more

I have used The Care of Trees for 20 years, I have my huge oaks and maple trimmed every 5-7 years and they take good care of them. This last year when I needed them trimmed I called The Care of Trees. I was not thrilled with the review but instead of going to another company I called back and was put in contact with Auxilio Tovar. Auxilio is fantastic and I HIGHLY recommend having him come to your location to provide his experience and expertise on anything you need tree related. It was a cold day in February but Auxilio's team came out on time and did a full days work trimming my trees and cleaning up the area. They were all very professional, knew what they were doing, worked hard and my trees look terrific. I highly recommend speaking to Auxilio, he started out as the tree climber trimming the trees and doing the work and now is the district manager, he is easy to talk to and will provide a little or a lot of information, depends what you want. When our trees were touching our cable line, I decided we needed to call professionals to trim them back. I was hesitant to go with The Care of Trees based on the overall rating, but a recommendation from our neighbors prompted me to give them a shot. Scheduling was easy, so easy, it might be the easiest experience I've ever had scheduling a vendor. The woman on the phone was friendly and helpful, she scheduled an appointment for an assessment and emailed me the profile of the arborist who would be conducting it. I wish all vendors did this, I knew exactly who was coming to my house and what they looked like. The assessment was good, but bad. Good because Auxilio was friendly and knowledgeable. Bad because we learned one of our trees was the invasive Tree of Heaven (more like Tree of Hell) and needed to come down soon-ish. We also needed to take down a segment of another tree in the next few years. Basically, we've created a tree fund line item in our household budget for future tree matters. The proposal came within a few days and honestly, we had prepared ourselves for it to be much worse. That said, tree maintenance isn't cheap. The level of detail was great, there was no ambiguity about what work they would complete. We opted to take down the Tree of Hell immediately since the one across the alley recently fell and created a lot of damage and fix the trees near our cable line as originally planned. Scheduling the work was easy; Auxilio was very responsive to all of our questions. I wasn't home for the work, but manfriend said everything went smoothly. Within a week of the work we had an invoice that could be paid by mail or online. We wouldn't hesitate to use The Care of Trees for future tree maintenance or refer them to others. read more

My yard is filled with several species of trees and shrubs that I wanted carefully pruned. When Allison from Care of Trees came out to estimate the job, I explained that I was particularly concerned about one sugar maple that her Company had too ruthlessly trimmed about 7 years previous. That tree had just started to substantially recover, showing a fairly full crown. But it needed to have some dead branches removed from its upper reaches and it needed intelligent pruning to curtail the tendency of some branches to "lion's tail." Allison told me that the Company was under new management and she assured me that they would do a better job this time. I mentioned that I had taken a course in tree care sponsored by Openlands that included instruction in some of the refinements of tree pruning. Allison and I discussed at some length how I wanted the trees and shrubs professionally pruned according to some of the guidelines given in this course and in various books on pruning. When the Care of Trees crew arrived though, Allison was not initially with them. The head of the crew called out, "So you want trees cut down? Which ones?" I was aghast. "No, No!" I panicked. I told him that I primarily wanted some trees and bushes carefully pruned. I went around the yard with him, pointing out which ones needed pruning and to what extent. The fellow looked blankly at me and I had a sinking feeling that these workmen didn't have any grasp of what I wanted done. But just as I finished the tour, Allison arrived on the scene and seemed to take over telling them what I wanted done. Allison left shortly afterwards, leaving the men on their own. I went indoors. I looked out at one point and saw that they were simply using a chain saw to top off some of the shrubs. No pruning, no eliminating of cross-over branches and suckers, etc. But I let that go, thinking I could go over that and do that lower-level work myself. When they finished, they packed up quickly without allowing me time to come out and inspect. So I had to have them come back on a following day and cut off some branches that were obviously interfering with phone lines in my yard - something I assumed would have been done in the first place. The job frankly did not look good. Then, bad luck, once again, Care of Trees had waited until late in February to do the job and we were hit with very warm temperatures. So just two days after Care of Trees had finished their work, I went out and found that maple tree that had been struggling towards recovery - was gushing sap. When I called Allison, she assured me that no amount of sap loss would hurt a maple tree. But could a tree that was already just regaining its strength, that was now gushing literally several buckets of sap - withstand such a loss? As spring broke and leaves began to appear, I saw that the job had been an almost complete disaster. That maple and my big old Linden tree had all been cut in exactly the wrong way. Instead of eliminating lions' tails (top-knots on the ends of spindly branches) - almost all the branches had been cut so that ONLY the lions' tails remained! According to most instruction manuals, intermediate growth along a branch should be identified, and spindly branches should be cut just after that new intermediate growth, thereby cutting OFF the lions' tails. Care of Trees had done just the opposite. They had cut off all the new flourishing growth along the course of each branch and had left ONLY the lions' tails. Now that sugar maple has been severely compromised and will probably die. (Although an arborist making a follow-up visit from Care of Trees said the tree was already probably a goner because of the girdling he noticed on it. He didn't believe me when I told him that its crown had been filling out.) Similarly, my full growth Linden tree now has very little crown. I can see the sky in fairly full panorama when I look up into it. Again, it had been pruned so that only the lions' tails at the tip of each branch remained. As the summer progressed, these lions' tails dragged the thinning branches down making almost a weeping willow out of my Linden. That second arborist who came out said that Care of Trees would eliminate all these excessively drooping, unhealthy branches - for an additional $300. Those shrubs that had simply been topped off have grown suckers and have grown into an unhealthy sprawl that I will have to spend hours pruning correctly. So, I spent over $2,000 to be left with hours of corrective pruning that I'll have to do myself - and with several trees compromised or dying. Very distressing. The trouble is that these large landscaping companies may indeed have arborists such as Allison on duty, but the arborists are not the ones who will come and do the actual work. The actual work will be left to temp workers who probably have little training in the refinements of pruning and tree care. You will likely face the same situation no matter what company you call. read more

Auxilio Tovar was my contact at The Care of Trees for the removal of the tree at the rear of our townhouse. They removed our tree, but even with a special machine, the fragments of the roots kept sending up new sprouts until the husband used a plant killer. Expensive, but worth it because the tree roots were threatening our foundation. read more

I've tried this company twice, mostly because the company we used for years no longer works in the City of Chicago. Each time they came out and talked with me about the job and then NOTHING happened until I call them back. I actually got a proposal once and responded that I wanted to go ahead with the work, the second time didn't even get a proposal though in my follow-up call their agent said he would have it to me "by 5 this afternoon." As a result the beautiful 40 year old Magnolia tree that we needed to have treated for scale has now died and has to be removed. I won't be calling Davey, that's for sure. read more

Do NOT work with this company. My car, parked legally on the street, was hit by one of their landscapers on July 29. The landscaper did the right thing and contacted the police to file a report. My car was taken to a shop. Fast forward 7 WEEKS LATER, and it is now mid-September and I am still without a car. It has been fixed but the body shop has still not been paid for the work they performed. We've called their insurance countless times and no one will call back. I've called CARE OF TREES several times and am always told the general manager will get back to me, but I've NEVER received a call back. What kind of a company hits your car causing thousands of dollars worth of damage and then won't even return a phone call? I'm actually currently on the phone on hold with the company. Being routed from one spot to another and no one will pick up the phone. Big surprise. There are too many other choices out there to use such an irresponsible, unethical and careless company. read more

On Nov 3, 2021 Emmanuel Aviles, ISA Certified Aborist, came out to look at two trees I wanted removed. He seemed very knowledgeable however after telling me he would send a quote via email he never did. I called back on April 4, 2022. The phone representative said he found my original request and asked me if I wanted another salesman to come out. I told him if that's the way Davey does business I was not really interested. He then said he would contact Emmanuel to see if he remembered the job and have him get back to me. The ironic thing is when I was on hold you listen to Davey tree commercials about how important the client is to Davey Tree. read more

My wife and I used CoT for eight years to inoculate an older white birch in our north side yard against the birch bore, which can easily kill a white birch. CoT was supposed to come every spring to perform the injection and then bill our credit card. Each treatment cost about $100. The problem is that they were very slow to respond and often never returned calls to remind them that we were paying them to come inoculate our tree. It was the same routine every year. We recently learned that the inoculations needed to occur in April to be effective. CoT typically would not show up until late May or June despite our contacting them in March or April. In short we were billed automatically for lousy service and an ineffectual treatment. I would not recommend using CoT. read more

I have read the reviews, and I find myself a little confused. That said, I just had Care of Trees remove a giant pine tree that was wedged into the corner of my backyard. Around it was a garden shed, plants, you name it. And this tree was forcing up the brick and was just too large for its location. They came right away, the scheduling was impeccable, The crew was professional and phenomenally neat. I've never had trouble getting hold of them, and I've never had trouble scheduling work with them, and I've been dealing with them for close to 30 years. Sometimes companies change, and I know they have been purchased by a larger company, But I have found the same high level of customer service that I've always had. You need a good company when you have to take down a tree in a dense urban area, and these are the only people I would trust. read more

I worked with Charlie Miller and his crew. After an infestation of spider mites, they came out and sprayed the area in the fall. My boxwoods were saved, as were some of my other bushes that I hoped I would not lose. While my umbrella tree had died, its removal was impeccably done and did not adversely affect any of the ornamental grasses near the stump. That made me very happy! I can definitely recommend The Care of Trees for all your pruning and landscaping needs! read more

Charlie (the arborist), Luis (the crew manager), and the team did a great job pruning a few trees at our house. Most of the work was for a very large parkway tree (so a permit was required). The team trimmed the parkway tree to create enough sunlight for other trees in the yard, while retaining the character and feel of the parkway tree. They involved me to confirm each of the cuts, which is important to me. At the other end of the scale, in terms of size, Charlie himself did some thoughtful trimming to carefully modify two trees that are the centerpieces of two decks. I will have them come back again next year. read more

Auxilio came to our house to inspect our tree on August 2. He ordered labs to determine the issue, but was pretty sure it was mites. He said it takes "a few weeks" to get the results. Nothing. I followed up on August 29 via email. Auxilio responded on Sept. 4 that he'd not received the labs but would follow up with them the next day. I called again at the beginning of September. Auxilio said still no labs. On Oct. 23 I emailed and said we had to go forward to treat the mites - which can only be treated in the fall. Nothing. I got busy. I called again Nov. 20. Auxilio said he had the report. Indeed we have mites, but the mites cannot be treated until next fall. REALLY? Wow! I'd give zero stars if I could. No excuse. read more

The Care of Trees, a Davey Co. was not helpful at all. I try not to get carried away with negative reviews so I'm going to keep it simple. It took them over a week to come out to look at the job. Once they were here, he couldn't just quote me. I had to wait the weekend. Once I got the quote, it was almost three times higher than the other quote I got from serious arborists. Everyone was quoting me around $1500. They quoted me at over $4000 plus I had to wait for the quote. Waste of time. My job was basically trimming three large limbs off of two ash trees, removing a small spruce and trunk injections. Try and use this review as a cautionary tale to not have your time wasted. read more

I have liked some of the tree trimming they do but next Time I won't use them for trimming bushes. I asked for them to be trimmed as low as possible and they were done high, making the area of pruning to top create a solid wall so no sun came in at all and the yews will be just twiggy the next time they have to be pruned. Also I asked for fine dark mulch that keeps a nice color - They brought chunky woody mulch that has all turned grey from the sun. On the trimming, I asked the super. to have someone come in and look at the tree from the 2nd fl. window so they can see what I wanted done, but they said the trimmers can see everything once they climbed into the tree. As I look out, I see some areas that didn't get trimmed that I wanted to point out. read more
