Where can you find the best halibut ( yes halibut not cod) fish & chips, two sides and hot bread that pretty much melts in your mouth? Okay but enough about the food! Our server Kim went above and beyond to make us feel like we were her only table. Plus when we finish she catches up to us as we're leaving with 2 different forgotten items. Steak was the worst I've ever eaten out! It won the wrestling match. Got a sirloin and could barely cut it with the steak knife! Actually got the Thursday night special, steak Oscar. The crab was swimming in sauce (what little crab there was), the asparagus had given up the fight and was as limp as possible. Probably frozen asparagus (during asparagus season)! This has been a favorite of mine for over a decade. Donel did a great job taking care of me. I love the steaks here as they are always perfectly cooked with that crust. Service here is always top notch. I don't think the Derby has been updated since my first visit so the inside is getting as tired as the parking lot here. I absolutely LOVED this place when I lived in Butte. Have been trying to convince my family to come to eat here and am I glad they didn't take me up on it. We ordered the baked Brie, I didn't know you could cut a soft cheese like Bree into small chunks and put in a puff pastry and not have the brie melt AT ALL or be the soft cheese it typically is known to be. They must freeze it so much to be able to cut a soft cheese like Brie into little chunks, no skin, and it doesn't melt when they put it into a puff pastry!!!!! Decided not to order anything else because I didn't want to be disappointed any further. And I so wanted a spinach salad for the dressing and was afraid it, as well as the steak, I wanted would be awful. Wanted to keep my memories of an iconic place in check On a side note, our server was amazing!! I use to come here ALL the time when I lived in Butte. It was a favorite. I'm so disappointed. We got suckered in Butte. We usually get great advice from the locals as we travel, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. Derby's fillet was good, I'll give them that, but the service (from not bringing us menus , to not asking how we want our steaks served) was just the "tip" of my displeasure . I understand getting lobster at house prices may back me into this very position, but if the lobster is Ruth Chris priced, (in San Diego), with a third of the flavor, a quarter of the quality , and 5 times as tough, they should let the patron know their meal (that I will be giving my dogs), was not worth the price, or the drive. Freaking awesome. They cooked our steaks exactly how we like them. Not to mention they came out fast. I was just finishing my wine and getting a second glass when they brought the food out. What timing. And if anyone knows me that's quick. Only complaint would be the decor. But honestly that's also why I loved it. It's a high end place that's not over charging to be high end. Loved it. I hope to hit it on my way home from our trip or some other time I'm in the area. But their website is a bit misleading. Their prices went up some. read more

Great steaks! Cooked to perfection. Party of four. One had the New York cut with red potatoes and corn. Meat was tender and cooked to perfection. Another had the T-Bone which was delicious. The other two had the BBQ ribs. Sauce was great. Ribs were tender and meaty. House salads were large but could have used a little romaine. Their spinach salad was good. The service was great. Stumbled onto this gem after trying a different restaurant on Father's Day, which was a 2 hour wait. We were passing through, so had no reservations. Walked right in to The Derby and got seated immediately. Our waitress was absolutely wonderful. The food was all delicious. They bring bread before the meal, which is a nice touch; and so many restaurants have done away with this tradition. A nice salad was also included with our meal. Hubby had steak and lobster. Although he said the lobster was a little overcooked and rubbery; the steak was cooked perfectly medium rare as he had asked, and very tasty. My lemon-honey chicken was super yummy. The Derby is an old Butte institution. It is NOT fancy inside, but it's clean and well cared for. Yes, it's dated and your grandparents started going here when it was new....but that's okay, because it's good and you shouldn't try to bougie this place up. The steak is always a solid choice. This is a cozy, race horse themed restaurant. It was late so we sat in the bar area. Service was fast and efficient. We ordered the NY steak and a ground steak. They came with salads, potatoes and veggies (carrots). Everything was great, with exception of the ground steak. The type of grind and flavor was not what we would expect. So my husband only ate about 1/3 of it. Here's where good service counts - when they asked how it was, he discreetly brought the problem to the attention of the owner, and they comped his meal. Further, they let us know that they will be speaking with their meat supplier to let them know that there was a problem. That turned a potentially awkward situation into a pleasant one. read more

I am combining a five star rating with a one-star rating to arrive at my overall three-star rating. First off, you need to know that the Derby is part casino, part pari-mutual horse betting, and part steak house. On an ON night, the derby features terrific, flavorful, flame-broiled steaks. They are really great. I have also, however, been to the Derby on an Off night. My wife ordered the filet (rib steak is normally best here). Her filet was approximately 75% fat and grissel (what's wrong with this picture....that's supposed to be a lean cut of meat). Embarassed, she asked the waitress to make sure that her steak was correct. We thought maybe some one order a flame broiled fat tard. The waitress told her that her steak was the filet (I also had one but it was as expected). When I told the waitress it was the most pitiful cut I'd ever seen, she offered $5 off or free dessert. Instead, I took my wife out to dinner after finishing my steak (hey...I'm not passing up beef for love). The side dishes are okay. The pasta with white sauce that comes with the meat is pretty bland. Normally, this is a pretty good place to go for a steak when you're in Butte. read more

Mmm, I don't think this place lived up to the four star rating it has. Yes, the beef was good, but there is a lot more to a restaurant and to a dinner than the slab of meat on your plate. First, the high points. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. The service was prompt but not rushed. We both had the spinach salad which was pretty tasty, though not at all healthy as you would think. I am not really a steak person but my companion enjoyed his filet mignon. On the flip side, there a few unimpressive things. I will reiterate what other helpers have said in avoiding the pasta side dish. It was odd, bland, and slightly cold. They could have been a little more generous with the side of vegetables to suit me. The decor of the restaurant left something to be desired. I wasn't expecting fancy as that would have been out of place, but the inside was tired and needed updating. The speakers were so old that they distorted the radio playing in the background which was distracting. Finally, they had a MASSIVE television screen dominating the dining room that was playing, of all things, a show of really fat people trying to lose weight. We were spending the night in Butte and thought we would go to a local steak place the hotel suggested. We were seated right away and were sat next to a larger table who was finishing up. It took a bit before the waitress came to our table. She was good once she took our orders and always kept our drinks refilled, but never did check on how our meal was after she brought it out. Our main dish took over an hour to come out. Me and one other at our table had ordered medium steaks and they came out closer to rare. My son switched his burger with my steak as he likes medium rare and it was still undercooked for him at the center. It would have been a great steak had it been cooked correctly. They were willing to take our steaks back to the kitchen and cook them longer so we could take them with us and not charge us for them. We had been at the restaurant for almost an hour and a half and after driving 10 hours we were ready to just go back to the hotel. The fries were cold and the burger was over cooked, bun was slightly soggy. First off no one told our waitress that we were there so we waited a good 15 min. Once she found us she was very helpful and great, unfortunately the food wasn't. I had a ribeye, and my wife had ribs. The ribeye was so, so. For the price I guess it was good. The ribs were a bit cold, and not "fall off the bone" good. It's pricey but worth it". 'Pricey' usually means what we would normally pay in Calgary. The Derby is a typical Montana Casino and Steakhouse. It's got some cheesy but homely cowboy decor accompanied with a Keno board: Never knew I could gamble AND eat. Teehee! We decided to get the Petite Filet Minion (6 oz). The side of pasta is less to be desired and the salad is ok. But when we had the steak... Whoa.... Whoa! It was AMAZING.... And I come from the land of Alberta Beef. I have NEVER had a most tender cut, melt-in-your-mouth steak. Montana Beef has something going on for them. You know what? Just go for the steak. The boyfriend is the pickiest eater you'll meet (Especially when it comes to his steak) and he asked to see the chef who prepared the steak and gave him $20 in thanks... Some days, when I'm feeling sad with my food options in Vallejo, I like to torture myself by wallowing in my memories of The Derby. This is the best place to get a steak. EVER. I would bet my mother on it. They cook steaks to perfection. Rare actually comes out rare, and YES, there is actually a distinction between rare, and medium rare...(so many restaurants seem to miss this). But not The Derby. I have never had to send a steak back, nor has anyone I've ever eaten with. At dinner, get the petite fillet ($24) - it is so heavenly! All Entrees come with a salad (Ceasar, house, or spinach) - do yourself a favor, get the spinach. The spinach salad comes with a fantastic oil/vinegar dressing, and they combine just the right amount of eggs, bacon, and onion - it outshines the rest of the 'pre-dinner' greens. The steak also comes with a potato, and your choice of steamed veggies or pasta. If you're not up for the most divine steak of your life...you can always go with the chicken - (I recommend the Diner's Delight, a house pasta with a light cream sauce and tender chicken breast strips) for a modest price ($8-11). For vegetarians, the Derby has a few options, but they are more than willing to make most of the pastas without meat, as well as the salads if you ask. Appetizers to eat-your-heart-out over are the Crab WonTons, or the Spinach Dip. I have never had a better Bloody Mary in the town of Butte - so tasty. It comes garnished with a little cocktail shrimp, onions, asparagus, and green beans, and its fairly easy on the pocketbook ($3.50). The Derby runs excellent lunch specials during the weekday, with many of their main dinner items being knocked down in price a good $3-5 or more. The interior of The Derby leaves a little to be desired, with the corner of the main dining room having a HUGE big screen TV - "you betcha, donchya know ya can't miss the game while takin' the broad out for dinner, oh yah.." The bar/lounge area is nicer, and seems more intimate/better situated for date scenarios. The Derby is considered a "fancy-pants" dinner establishment, but the attire is casual. The poor waitresses are stuck in black nylons, black short-shorts, and a sparkly Derby top, but they are so ridiculously friendly you can't help but feel bad for raising the ole eyebrow at the outfits. Really, I can't say enough good things about the food here. I mean c'mon- I wanna bet my mom that you won't get a better steak. Do yourself a favor, eat here if you're ever passing through...and then tell me how great it was, so moms can rest easy. :) read more

The best filet I have EVER had in my life!! And my boyfriend took me to Ruth Chris last week and I have spent thousands of dollars in Las Vegas, but NONE of them compare to this steak.
