A local gem not far from the Butte Airport. I came in for breakfast -- and there was a lot to choose from. After a lot of tough decisions, I decided on the Cinnamon Roll combination with sausage patty and fried eggs. It was all done to perfection, including the cinnamon roll which was the size of a dinner plate and clearly freshly baked. Don't miss that delicious treat! Brewed iced tea. Great little diner off the freeway in Butte, MT. It's a no frills type of spot, with friendly and fast service. I came 2 days in a row as my hotel was down the road. Lots of food options, and breakfast, lunch and dinner are served all day, which I like. First visit, I ordered the burger steak, added mushrooms and onions. It came with 2 sides and I opted for the mashed potatoes with gravy and a side salad with honey mustard dressing. I actually finished most of my meal. It was pretty good, so I came back the next day. I ended up ordering the corned beef hash. It was ginormous!!! I could only finish 1/4 of it! I like that I was able to customize the bell pepper and onion amount on it. Our first time to the Hanging Five Family Restaurant. First, the plate-sized cinnamon rolls are to die for! The place was hopping and our server Reggie was quick and helpful in answering our questions, taking our orders, and following up with drink refills. There was a booth by the window we were happy was available, as it was comfy, well lighted, and easy for conversation. The huckleberry muffin was especially delightful, with just the right crunch on the edge, cooked to caky soft in the middle, and plump, flavorful huckleberries throughout. Review Visit: July 24th, 2015 Simple and Delicious. Think Denny's, but cheaper and better. Rounding out a 2 week cross country trip, this was the last unique food place we stopped at. Just so happened to be in a funny town named Butte. I am sure the locals hate the jokes, but it still makes me giggle a bit on the inside. Anyways, Hanging Five was a nice little restaurant. It wasn't little as they could easily handle a dinner rush and then some. The service was great. I ordered a basic breakfast of pancakes, eggs and bacon. It was pretty good. When it came time to pay, we all realized there was no sales tax. How awesome is that! I live in Illinois and we seem to have taxes on everything and everywhere. Butte itself was an interesting town. Well, here we are at Hanging Five Restaurant in Butte, MT. Need to talk a bit... VERY crowded. Not a wait, but almost completely full. The look is quite rustic (in a "we built this last week kind of way."). What I mean by that is that it looks like it is supposed to be old, but it's actually quite new. After getting our table, it was a little long to get served, but right before it was annoyingly long So, a bit of a wait... I ordered breakfast, Adrienne ordered the pot roast. Now, the menu says you can get anything you want from the menu any time of day. However, the sides are not included. What I mean is that you cannot get breakfast with dinner sides, or dinner with breakfast sides. Good LOOKS amazing! My breakfast in the evening looks fantastic. Seriously. It was all cooked precisely as ordered. The hash browns had a slightly unusual taste. I am unsure of the oil they were cooked in, but it wasn't bad, just unexpected. There were just over medium eggs. Standard. However, the jalapeños sausage was pretty decent. It was a bit chewy but it was good. The pancakes were another matter entirely. They weren't very good. They looked good, but the batter was a bit bitter. Not a fan. I'll say, the food (my part) looked good, but the taste wasn't good. Adrienne and her pot roast: She said it was quite "down home". It was quite edible, and done well. Her specific taste would give it a "B-". Good meat, smoked flavor, but not flavored to her specific taste. She says that those who like smoked will be happy with it, even very happy. Portion size was GREAT! Very laid back, down home, big portions, and everything. So, this was just once, on a busy evening, so, maybe ordering breakfast wasn't smart, and I'll consider that in the future. The staff was excellent after the slow start. Will try somewhere else next time we come through. Definitely a no frills place. Food took forever to come out and looked like it came from Safeway and was just slapped on a plate. My friend had a breakfast burrito which was huge but no sauce, cheese or anything to make it appealing. I had chicken breast with mashed potatoes, chili cup. The chicken was dry, mashed potatoes were instant, no gravy, and chili cup was beans with chili sauce. All the food came out lukewarm and the chili had a film on it so you know it had been sitting there awhile. Not sure why we didn't get served the food right away. I always try the pork chop sandwiches anywhere I see them while in Montana, especially the places where it's not their specialty. I find those restaurants actually have the best ones. Hanging 5 didn't appear to have a lounge seating area. Beer and wine are available for consumption. House Chardonnay was $4 a glass. Coors Light and Bud Light were $2 a can. Corona was $3. Inexpensive. My wife and I shared the Tuna Melt Sandwich for $12. We chose the cup of Chili as our side. Our sandwich was tasty. The chili was standard canned Nalley Chili. Service was slow and unfriendly. Pricing is appropriate for portion sizes. Overall, we all left sated for the evening after a long day of riding. read more

The Hanging Five has been around for a long long time! This was where my grandda would take me when I was in town! Memories always flood in when I walk thru the door! It is clean, and not to loud so a nice place to chat! Jon was a great waiter, filled with smiles and a warm welcome! I was not prepared when I realised what family that great big grown up lad belonged too! tis a Butte thing). The tag line at the top of the menu had me sold. Breakfast, lunch or dinner items all day. This was perfect for my friend and I who are traveling through Montana. She lives a big breakfast, me not a fan. So when they told me I could order a cheeseburger at 8 am I was sold. My friend did biscuits and gravy, sausage, and an egg. All of which she liked! I had a cheeseburger with fries, root beer and a side of ranch. Portions are huge! Sadly, more than half of my food was left on my plate due to portion, not taste. My burger was clearly freshly made and that toasted bun and homemade ranch was just the icing on the cake. Bathroom was clean and service was excellent. So friendly! What a great find! The place we were going had permanently closed so I searched for options near us. I'm so glad we found this place! Service was excellent and the food was beyond good. With that said, while i was dining i was unable to get an answer to why the owners chose this name, i always like a good back story. The choices and portion sizes are wonderful, and the quality of the omelets and scrambles were outstanding. The hash browns were moist and buttery, not dried out like many other restaurants. It took a little while for them to get the food out. We got chicken noodle soup as one of the sides, and that was decent, and no complaints on the side salad. For entree, I got the sirloin, and found it lacking in flavor. Probably could have used more seasoning. We also had the chicken fried steak, and it wasn't really that crispy outside. Finally, we had the cordon bleu with ham, and that actually tasted pretty good and was actually the least expensive entree. Overall, it was okay diner food. read more

Two stars for nice service. Food was sub par. I ordered the sirloin steak with a salad and grilled veggies on the side. The "salad" was iceberg lettuce with some shredded cheddar cheese and croutons on top. The grilled veggies were frozen veggies that were microwaved and maybe put on the grill for a moment (see photo) The steak was supposed to be medium rare and it was basically purple inside. I asked for it to be put back on and they nicely did. Service was really nice though!
