The raspberry martini was just okay. The burgers ordered at the table were well loved. My mother in law ordered the old fashioned and LOVED IT. Vibes were high and service was great. I want to like it. I've tried this place about 4 times. It's locally owned, they donated money to The Patmos Library to prevent it from closing when there was a "war on books." The staff is friendly and nice ... it's just the food... I've given up on the burgers after they've made them wrong on previous occasions. Lately, I've been trying the falafel wrap. The first time I had it, it was just okay. This time? Almost inedible, sadly. The falafels appear to be homemade, and I think they're baked rather than fried? Or maybe they just got soggy waiting in the window? I don't know. The texture was really bad. Pasty and chewy and makes you feel thirstier than you need to be. The hummus accompanying the falafel enhanced that pasty gluey feel in the mouth and there was no crunch. It's $14 for a sandwich. I was able to gag down half of it and drink 3 waters before I gave up to go back to work. I don't know, there are cheaper options around that are also locally owned that taste better, sadly. I guess this place is fine for drinks? I wouldn't know. Try it and see if it's delicious l guess. I think I'll drive myself over to The Arrows or Delicias instead. read more

This was an amazing dinner!!! From start to end the food and drinks were fantastic. We walked in on a weeknight and were able to get seated at a cozy high top right away. Our waitress promptly brought us water and greeted us and took our cocktail order while we tried to decided on an appetizer. We ordered the burnt ends and once they arrived at the table the smell forced us to dive in before being able to capture a pic. They were cooked with a great bite and crunch. Along with a hot honey and avocado cream dip that paired nicely. For cocktails we went with a classic old fashioned, the secretariat, and a Seattle slew. All well poured and no drops were spared. The highlight of the evening were the entrees. The blacked salmon was seasoned well and cooked great but after we left we couldn't stop thinking about the gnocchi!! The fluffy potato gnocchis are smothered in a creamy sauce and if you don't care for peas you won't even care they're loaded with tons of them, shiitake mushrooms, diced onions and served with a crispy side of bread. (You're able to add protein options, I went with a steak) Finished the night with a slice of classic red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting, sprinkled with candied walnuts from their holiday dessert menu. With something for everyone including gluten free to vegetarian options and an extensive beer/wine/spirits list. It's a great spot for a date night, family dinner or business/casual lunch. My husband and I have been celebrating our honeymoon staycation with visiting different restaurants all over west Michigan. The Derby has been our favorite stop and meal hands down during this week and probably our year. Had a late lunch yesterday at Derby with my daughter and grandsons. Not very busy, the waitress sporadic at best, the side salad was served after waiting a long time for our order to come, and we both picked out rotten black lettuce out of the salad, my daughter decided not to finish hers. We ordered some wine, which came quickly, but waited too long for the food. The fry's were just warm at best, sent those back. They charge premium prices for the food, but the sandwich was something I would expect from Culver's up the street. Nothing premium about it. Do better Derby.. not sure I will be back! read more

Upon entering, we were hopeful when it came to the design of the space. Our waitress was nice, while not inherently outgoing (which is perfectly fine), but we later found that she was not as attentive as a patron would hope for. We picked the margarita (my favorite part of my meal) and the espresso old fashioned (husband said, "not good") to drink and The Hipster sandwich and the steak and frites with the ribeye. When the sandwich was placed in front of me, the first thing I thought was, "That looks dry." To my surprise, the chicken was super moist, but that came with a detriment: the chicken side of the bread was super wet. I ended up eating it open-faced with a fork. I also would note that the toppings other than the chicken were all piled in the center of the sandwich. I reconstructed it to make my bites more harmonious with all the flavors. It came with chips, but they were so over-seasoned I stopped after one (husband loved them though!). For his ribeye (ordered med-rare), the end product was well done. The fries were good (especially dipped in the sauce the steak sat in). We waited for our check for too long, then waited for our waitress to take our payment in the same amount of time. We may return to attempt a completely different meal, but it's more unlikely than not. Would not recommend. read more

Derby Tavern had been on my list to try for a while! We started off with a cocktail and draft beer. My Seattle Slew was a solid cocktail with fresh tasting strawberry puree and basil. For our appetizer we picked the pita chips, housemade hummus, and garlic tome. The pita chips were served warm and crispy. For dinner we ended up splitting a pepperoni pizza. It was stated to be very good and the Thick bacon was excellent. Also I agree with the review that stated the pickles were excellent. They are. The service was iffy. It was super friendly and accurate. However it was slow and forgetful. I understand restaurants have trouble hiring and I do give extra slack for that. However I felt invincible at times. I needed some bbq sauce and it took about 5 minutes to flag down our waitress. Also my drink sat empty for a long time before I flagged down my waitress again for a refill. Overall I'm going to give a forgiveable 4 stars. Would I return? Yes, but it wouldn't be first choice. I do recommend giving them a try though. read more

Amazing. My husband surprised me with a date night here and we will definitely be back! We both got the filet mignon meal on a bed of mashed potatoes with au jus and it was SO GOOD. We had to wait a little while for the food to come out but they were super busy so we understood and were in no hurry. The manager personally came and apologized for the long wait and made sure to check on us once the food arrived. (Very appreciative of that!) It was well worth the wait! I've dined here multiple times, and the experience has been inconsistent. Unfortunately, this recent visit was the last straw. I ordered the short rib, but 3/4 of it was pure fat, leaving me with only a few bites of actual meat. When Chef Caleb asked how our meal was, I mentioned that it was quite fatty. Instead of addressing the issue, he explained that short rib is naturally a fatty cut, which didn't sit well with me given how little meat there actually was. He did offer to find a less fatty piece, but I declined out of frustration. I've been here a bunch of times now since it opened close to two years ago and it's a nice staple in my dining repertoire. I think they have really good burgers and pork or pulled chicken sandwiches and we really like the deep fried cheese curd appetizer . Decent beer selection on tap as well as whiskeys/bourbons. Probably other spirits as well but I don't usually look for those. Besides the food I really value good service, and Chad at the bar and any of the wait staff I've had at a table have always been friendly. Ive heard so many good things about Derby, so we decided to give it a try tonight. The ambiance was great - it's beautiful inside. The food, however, left a little to be desired. We ordered cheese curds as a starter and while they tasted good, they were large cheese cubes that were essentially puffs inside. They tasted good, but were definitely not curds. My husband's burger was supposed to have Carolina bbq on it, but it very definitely was mustard, not an expectedly tasty Carolina bbq. My sandwich was great, the pulled pork wasn't overly sauced, which was a pleasant surprise. The fries were ok, not anything special. The service was extremely slow (they weren't very busy and seemingly had adequate staff. The table behind us arrived after we ordered and got all of their meals before ours came. The table next to us waited over 15 minutes for their drinks. For all of the good we have heard, we are hoping this was just an off night. read more
