This place is an awesome, eclectic, and personable spot with incredible food as well as service. The BIzzy Grizzys or whatever they called them were one of my favorite appetizers ever, and I don't typically like things like that. At first I was hesitant because of the price, and it being biscuits, but they made me eat those words and more. It was like a large biscuit muffin top with jalapeño, cheese and honey glaze (I think) and it came with a white cheddar cheese sauce to dip it in that was outrageously delicious. For a guy who hates cheddar biscuits, I've got to say I'm blown away. My wife ordered the steak with fingerling potatoes and carrots. It was on the pricier side, but yet again well worth it. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the veggies were pretty good too. They had live music playing as well tonight. It was a jazzy kind of vibe and it didn't over power anyone talking or anything. The guy had some serious skill too. To top it off, we had some pretty killer service from everyone there. From the hostess taking our names, random servers walking around, and our fantastic server (I forget her name but she was blonde and worked upstairs and had a a really great attitude. The expo or food runner dropping our food off anticipated us possibly needing an extra plate and brought one without asking which was super awesome and ended up coming in handy ( I knew my wife wouldn't finish that steak alone) and she brought it without asking and was ready with a smile to get more. I used to be a GM (I hate when people use this saying but...) truly I know how hard it is to find good workers and the folks running it here seem to have it down. I come from a place where you have to drive 100 mi or more for average service. So seeing exceptional service is really almost too good to be true. I'd definitely stop in for a bite. I dined at TOG today for a business lunch and, unfortunately, my experience was very disappointing. At the end of our meal, I asked for a to-go box because I had barely touched my food. My guest and I spent most of our lunch talking, and I left with nearly an entire meal. About 20 minutes after leaving, I realized I had forgotten my box and immediately called the restaurant to see if it was still there. The young lady who answered the phone asked where I had been seated. I explained that I was at the very first table at the front of the restaurant. Within seconds, she told me there was nothing there. Her tone made it clear that assisting me was not a priority. Given that the hostess stand is located at the back of the restaurant and I was seated at the front, I do not believe there was enough time for her to actually check before dismissing my concern. After I sent an email regarding the situation, the hostess responded that she had walked through the restaurant looking for the box. Based on the timing of our phone conversation, I find that difficult to believe. In her response, she also stated that she checked with the servers after our call had ended, which suggests that no real effort was made while I was on the phone. What is most disappointing is that I am a regular customer. Today, I paid $56.00 for lunch for myself and my business guest. Between a server who was largely absent throughout the meal and the dismissive interaction when I called about my forgotten food, the level of service fell far below what I have come to expect. Everyone has an occasional bad day, but customer service is often defined by how issues are handled after something goes wrong. In this case, I felt dismissed rather than helped. We sat at the bar for a late lunch. It was very full of what seemed like regulars. They have an excellent happy hour menu with drinks and food. Sadly, it was a Monday, and they were out of deviled eggs and salmon crostinis. We enjoyed the Moscow Mule and the Old Goat cocktail, an old-fashioned on their happy hour menu. I hadn't been here in years for no reason other than that I live on the north side of town and it's a bit of a hike to get there. My husband and I were meeting up with a few of our friends for dinner and they suggested Old Goat. Since I hadn't been in ages and my husband only ever had take-out we decided to make the drive. I'm so glad they suggested it!! They have a just ok beer list, but had plenty of wines, cocktails, and mocktails, so they really have something for everyone. One of our friends got a key lime pie martini that looked really pretty; she said it was really sweet, but good. I really liked the wine that I ordered. Food-wise we all had a really hard time picking what we wanted since everything on the menu sounded so good! I kept it pretty basic with a half Caesar salad and a jalapeno hot honey pizza (which also had pepperonis - yay!). My husband had the jambalaya, which looked amazing, and he really enjoyed! I tried one of the shrimps and really liked the flavors. I would probably order this the next time. One of our friends also had the jambalaya and loved it as well. The ambience was pretty good. Its already a little noisy due to so many hard surfaces and high ceiling, and they also had someone there performing live music. The music itself was nice, but our table was right in front of the musician, so it was pretty hard to carry on a conversation. It was also dinnertime on a Sunday, and pretty busy. The waiting area in the back is pretty awkward with how many people were there. Its great that there are benches along one wall, but with people standing as well as sitting on the benches it was a really tight squeeze for how many people kept walking back and forth through the corridor. Overall I really enjoyed the dinner. I would hopefully go again when during off-peak hours so it wouldn't be as busy. The food and drink will definitely bring me back though! read more

I finally got around to trying again. I still really like the atmosphere. This time I got their deviled eggs ($10) as an appetizer. I enjoyed them. Not doing anything special though, nothing popped as wow. I ordered the Smokeshow Burger ($21). This is a 1/2 lb. Char-grilled fatty burger, smoked gouda cheese, applewood and onion jam, dill pickles, haystack onions, and calabrian chili a on a grilled challah roll. The burger was very good. It was cooked to the correct desired doneness. Again it just wasn't anything special. I've had so many better burgers, but it is definitely better than average. I upgraded to fries and these were definitely the best thing of the night. Probably the best fries I've had in a restaurant in years. The service was excellent. Efficient and Jovial. Overall I'm upgrading to a 4 star review. Would I return? If someone else wanted to go, yes. Probably not if the choice is mine where to go. Came back recently for another date night with the wife. Atmosphere is cozy and intimate with a fun live music on Fridays. The reason we come back to this place is the extensive and tasty menu and you can get a deal of $100 worth of gift cards for $75 at Costco- hard to pass up. This trip I got the Reuben and it was pretty darn tasty though my only critique was the sauce was pretty sparse on it. My wife got the salmon and it was really delicious, great flavor. Talk about an eccentric menu! You can find just about anything to eat on this menu. Parking available in the back of the building and an abundance of seating. There was even a live piano player which made the experience so much better. For a starter they have HH. 3-6P M-F which is awesome. Our server recommended that we try the happy hour pretzel option and it was plenty for 2. For a main, I tried the Charley Apple recommended from our server. Perfect. Old Goat is a really welcoming, cutesy rustic spot featuring live music and great cocktails. I'd recommend them for brunch, dinner, date nights, or girls nights! We stopped in last night and they had a band playing quietly in the background and were decorated festively for Christmas. Our group enjoyed our drinks a lot! The Plum Princess, Boots with the Fur, & Cool Runnings. For dinner, we really liked their salmon and skirt steak, but a few other meals were too spicy (jambalaya and shrimp pasta). We came in at 11am on a snowy Saturday morning and were sat right away. Their restaurant was very well staffed and our server was very kind. We both got the half salad and sandwich for $16, which seemed to be the best deal on the menu. Food was excellent and tasted very fresh. Reuben sandwich was particularly good. Ambiance is a little upscale farmhouse vibe with some modern twists. Lots of fun light fixtures and wallpaper to brighten up the space. Overall great experience and will come back soon! read more

First time in Michigan and my partners parents wanted to bring us to a local favorite of theirs. We had a pretty large group of six people and they still got us in on a busy Friday night. I ordered the Arnold Palmer; made with fresh lemonade and for dinner I opted for the pepperoni pizza. it was a nice size pizza, that was covered in pepperonis, and overall had a great taste. My partner ordered the Gumbo, I tried a little after he was ranting and raving about it and I have to agree that's an amazing gumbo. Full of flavor, fresh seafood an a little spice. The interior is fun and eclectic! Staff was super friendly and apologized for the pizza taking a little longer than usual. But I didn't mind at all as I was enjoying the live Jazz band they featured. What an experience! Came in for linner on Saturday, 5/31 around 3pm and sat at the bar. The bartender was the perfect mix of attentive, friendly and gave us space. The restaurant is quirky and unique - even has a grand piano! The Old Goat came HIGHLY recommended and we were thrilled to finally give it a day in court. We started with a couple cocktails, the Garden Grove for me and the Kenny Rogers for him. Both were delicious! Our starter was the Bubbly Brown and it was to die for. The stone oven bread with flaky salt was incredible. The dip was the best artichoke dip I've ever had - in my opinion - he didn't agree, then again, he doesn't love goat cheese like I do. For our entrees I had the Mac Daddy and thoroughly enjoyed it. The chicken tenders were flavorful and perfectly cooked. The sauce was creamy and the tomatoes cut the richness of the sauce in best way. He had the jalapeño shrimp pasta and it was delicious! The lemony jalapeñoy sauce was perfect with the al dente linguine and tender shrimp. The whole dish worked well together and nothing seemed to overpower anything else. We had a lovely time and we are sad and happy that the Old Goat isn't closer or we would be regulars, for sure. read more

I am bumping my rating to 4.5 stars. The space is nice and comfortable. The staff have been very friendly. My server today, Meg, was just so kind and attentive. The food quality and consistency has improved in recent years, and today's lunch was no exception. I started off with the Deviled Eggs, and they were delicious with a combination of lemon, pepper and feta. I wanted a burger, but was not in the mood for onion jam or caramelized onions, so Meg said they could just do a simpler version for me. It was really excellent. I upgraded my side to the 'Kennebec Fries' and they totally hit the spot. When you leave a place in a much better mood than when you entered, it's a good sign. I've been to the Old Goat a couple times over the last month and really enjoyed it! I got to try the pretzel (absolutely amazing), the mushroom Philly (sooo good but huge, so it's a great thing to share, or have leftovers), a Caesar salad as the hot honey pepperoni and jalapeño pizza. The Caesar salad was alright but nothing special but still good, and the pizza was delicious! I really like the fact that they have an outdoor patio and ample parking in back. Depending on the day, you may have a wait, but it's definitely worth while! I love that it's a bit outside of downtown but it's in a cute little neighborhood and everything I've had is absolutely lovely. Went out to dinner with my wife and son the other night here and I truly have to give credit where credit is due because the entire experience was phenomenal and really blew all of our expectations out of the water. Our waitress was super kind and attentive, they had live piano and music playing, the buildings itself was decorated so bright and in the funnest eclectic tone. I got a delicious porter and my wife and son shared a delicious house made lemonade and after the amazing appetizers, we barely had a full appetite for the main course, which all was incredible and even the leftovers were properly disposed of the next day. What an excellent and fun dinner spot! My friend, who lives in Grand Rapids, highly recommended this place and I heartedly concur after one visit! You need to get on a waitlist, and I can see why. People were lined up when we entered around 7:30pm. The place feels like your favorite neighborhood bar! We were escorted to our table and had a fantastic waitress named Sha. She made us laugh, was always available when needed and did an overall excellent job that made our dinner and evening that much more worthwhile. We started off with the Deviled Eggs based on the reviews on Yelp. The flavors change each week, and, on this night, the eggs were Mediterranean style. Very cool and tasty! For dinner, I had the Beef Biscuit Bourguignon, which was slow braised beef stewed in red wine and served with carrots, onions, peas and potatoes. It was then topped with fresh baked drop biscuit pieces. It was served piping hot in a black cast pot. I loved every bite! On this night, a three-piece band, entitled "Third Coast Swing" was playing and they added to the overall ambiance of the place as well as our overall dinner experience. Had a couple of drinks (an old goat and a Moscow mule). Old goat was excellent....definitely Not watered down! Dinner - I ordered the winter salmon which came with fresh vegetables and couscous which was excellent. We also had a burger, jambalaya and pasta dish (can't remember the name). The jambalaya was also outstanding, very flavorful and had a large crab leg in it. Pasta dish had a nice Ariola sauce with a good portion of chicken. I love this place! My friend took me to this place for dinner because her friend was playing in a jazz trio that was performing there in the evening. It was an evening of good food, good music, and fun and chill vibe. This place is popular; when we arrived on a Friday night at around 6:30, we had to be placed on a waitlist (but the wait was not very long). I got the Jambalaya which had sausage, shrimp, crab legs, jalapeños, charred sweet corn, veggies like tomatoes and onions, and saffron rice in a hot cast-iron pot. It came out hot. The dish carried some nice variety of taste to it! To be honest, I wish the sauce and the tomatoes were a little more juicy and flavorful, but it was still good. It had a good kick of spice to it. The crab legs were a little hard to get into because the shell was on the softer side. But once you figure out how to really angle the shell cracker on the legs, it kind of works. The waitress was excellent, warm and attentive. I loved the decor of the place with pictures and sculptures of goats; it was so unique. This place is quite large! They have two floors of seating. We called to place a food order, and the lady who answered told us she couldn't take an order for food. That didn't make sense at all. We even tried to order through the website, but that wasn't an option either. I don't understand what kind of sustainable, valid restaurant doesn't let customers actually place a food order. We all loved his music since they were old game theme songs and stuff similar. One of the bartenders took care of us and was friendly. The happy hour menu had some quality options on it but we just opted for the drinks and skipped the appetizers. For my dinner, I had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich with fries. I was starving and ate the whole thing but it's definitely on the larger portion size. The fries were crispy and thin, my favorite. The chicken had the perfect amount of kick for me when I don't love super spicy stuff. The bun was rather overpowering and took over the sandwich but that would be my only complaint. For dessert, I had the cherry crème brûlée. It was pretty good but the actual creme was pretty runny/watery, which didn't seem normal. Overall, pretty cool spot in such a cool building. We had our plans cancelled due to illness today so we decided to give The Old Goat a try. What a good decision! Pretty much everything was exceptional...so let me expound: First, the atmosphere - very welcoming, not too bright and not too dark. A bit of noise, but nothing distracting. A good mix of high-tops, low tables, and bar seating. Very diverse customer base - lots of kids, lots of seniors. Nice, subtle decorating with low volume smooth jazz music for background. Nice!! Next, the menu - we were there for happy hour, which runs from 3-6 Mon-Thu. We ordered Old Goat cocktails (their version of an old fashioned based on Rittenhouse rye whiskey) "easy on the simple syrup". Very tasty, so much so that one of us needed a second one. At $8 during happy hour a real bargain. We decided to only order entrees since our server said they were on the large side. I ordered the Jalapeño Shrimp Pasta and my wife ordered the Jambalaya. Mine was fantastic- large shrimp, a nice bite, and super tasty butter cream sauce. This is a new favorite - I will order again! My wife's jambalaya was also very tasty, but a lot of work. It comes with a pretty generous portion of snow crab legs, which take a little effort to "de-meat". This dish is also a bit spicy, but we were surprised that most of the spice came from the sauce. The andouille was very tasty and nice and chunky...but not very spicy in and of itself. Finally, the service: Because we sat at a high-top in the bar area, we were served by the bartender, Bailey. She was terrific, offering suggestions and opinions on both food and drink. We've found that sitting in the bar sometimes leads to inferior service because the bartenders get so busy. This was not the case at all for us today - Bailey was very attentive. Definitely one of the best "first time" experiences we've had in a while. We don't care that it's a bit of a drive for us - we'll be back! read more

We were in Grand Rapids last weekend and stopped by The Old Goat for an early lunch. I loved this place! It's decorated wonderfully and has lots of things to look at. Love all the goats around the restaurant. Our server was quick to greet us and take our order. I had a glass of wine and my boyfriend ordered a beer on tap. We shared the deviled egg of the day- feta and balsamic. Delicious. I decided on the ham sandwich and my boyfriend got the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Both were very good. My ham had an amazing rosemary flavor that paired very well with the cheese and baguette. You want the sauce that's served with this. Amazing. We noticed the wood fired oven and would love to visit again to try their pizza. Definitely on our list of places to eat in Grand Rapids. read more

Finally got to try the Old Goat and it was great! Pulling up, I passed the area to park in the back where the entrance was so I parked in the front. It worked out because we got to walk by a beautiful mural (which I forgot to take a picture of) on our way to the entrance! I loved the ambiance in here with the decor, the lights, and the live music! I was surprised to see upstairs seating but it looked cool. My boyfriend and I went with my coworkers and got there late but they seemed to get seating pretty quick for a group of 6, as the restaurant was getting pretty busy. We all ordered something different and everyone enjoyed their food. The food was honestly better than I expected and had a nice presentation. I saw a lot of pictures of the Jambalaya and just had to try it! Definitely spicier than I expected but tolerable with my lower spice tolerance and the celery was interesting. My husband (boyfriend at the time) were in town for a wedding, and a close friend of mine also lives in the city, so she recommended we all eat at the Old Goat together. I will say, because of the liveliness though, this is one of those places where when it's crowded, you kind of have to talk really loudly and have your ear close to whoever's speaking. I remember the food and the service being alright, my husband's family is from Michigan and so he really enjoyed the food here. I think I did too but it was not as memorable for me.
