My daughter's father brought our 9-year-old to this office for a skin pigmentation concern she has had since birth. After being seen by the PA and paying our copay, he called me with a diagnosis of keratosis pilaris -- a condition characterized by raised, rough bumps on the skin. My daughter has no bumps, no redness, no texture changes whatsoever -- only pigmentation. The diagnosis did not align with her presentation at all. I came to the office immediately with questions about the diagnosis and to request a brief conversation with either the PA or the supervising physician. There were only two other patients in the office at the time, and I was told the supervising doctor was present but not seeing patients for the rest of the day. After two trips to the front desk, I was told the PA was also unavailable and that we would need to book -- and pay for -- a separate reevaluation appointment to discuss the diagnosis we had just received. I was not asking for a new appointment. I was asking for two minutes of clarification on a diagnosis made for a child. That request was denied. I understand offices get busy. What I don't understand is the unwillingness to take a moment to address a concerned parent's questions about their child's care -- especially when we had just been seen and just paid. The lack of follow-through and the suggestion to simply book and pay again left me feeling that patient care was not the priority here. I would not return to this location and would caution parents in particular to be aware of this experience before choosing this office for their children. read more

The doctors (MD) and Medical Assistants/Scribes are great, and some of the Physician Assistants (PA) are too. However, the office staff are rude, incompetent, and negligent. They fumbled the prior authorization with insurance for a medication I needed, and it took another 2 months for it to be processed. I had to prompt them repeatedly with weekly phone calls after my insurance company called me to say the DermaSpecs team had provided incorrect paperwork and cpt treatment/billing codes, and they could not get in touch with their office. Imagine paying copays, and hundreds via insurance, only to have to do their job for them. My insurance's prior authorization dept explained the billing issue and cpt code mistakes so I could address it... I then spent far too many days playing telephone with the DermaSpecs office. I even had to explain what a cpt code was to the front desk staff in order for them to redirect me, when I tried to address this in person. Needless to say, that prior authorization expired and it took several weeks yet again to get a new one. Apparently no one had noticed or thought to renew it, all the while continuing to provide services. They tried passing the uncovered costs onto me but *surprise balance billing is now illegal* and their responsibility. It's their job to maintain patient records and handle billing; they know insurances do not pay for services rendered without a valid prior auth and yet make careless mistakes. While addressing the insurance/cpt snafu, I spoke with different offices since the DermaSpecs only has 1 main line (which can be answered by any of their branches). Only the Astoria location's staff has been snarky and condescending. The front desk has been brazen enough to roll their eyes when I was in-office standing in front of them to see... and I've witnessed them argue and raise their voice with patients when they've expressed appt timeliness/ wait time/ insurance concerns. They have such a high receptionist turnover rate that its unclear whether they've been trained in customer service yet or if this is truly the highest level of "professionalism" the office can provide. I hope it's the former, for patients' sakes. Don't expect to be seen promptly, even with an appt. Wait times have sometimes run an hour past my scheduled appt time. Walk-ins are discouraged... they tend to claim they're fully booked after 12 pm, despite an emty waiting room. I decided to wait there one day just in case a patient canceled (because I had a free afternoon and needed a consultation); not long after sitting in a waiting room with 1- 2 other people the Dr's schedule "freed up". The only reason I used this office so often was out of convenience because its by my job. That and their doctors work with a great specialty pharmacy that's able to navigate my insurance's rules to provide meds my insurance won't approve elsewhere. TLDR try another DermaSpecs location. Their doctors rotate and some offices are better than others. read more

If you call, AI answers the phone. It's impossible to get a human on the line. When you arrive at the front desk, they had you an iPad and expect you to take photos of and scan in your insurance card and ID while the staff sits there doing nothing. My 85 year old mother was expected to do that. Fortunately I was with her. They rotate their staff through their various offices and don't tell you. Mom had a follow up with a PA she loves and when we arrived for her appointment a different PA came in the room. It was only after I demanded to speak to a manager that I learned mom's PA was at another facility that day and no one told us. We were then told if we wanted to come back they would charge us for the visit. So this place is essentially a factory. They don't care about patient/ physician relationships. They have zero customer service. It's the McDonalds of Dermatology. Stay away. read more

I booked an appointment with Zocdoc. This office lists my insurance on their Zocdoc page. Hours later I received text messages from the office confirming my appointment. I even filled out their web forms and uploaded photos of my insurance and later received an additional text re-confirming my appointment. However, when I ultimately showed up to the appointment I was told they don't take my insurance... You really should respect prospective patients enough NOT to accept their appointments and make them fill out web forms et cetera without first confirming you accept their insurance. read more

Medical procedure did not work. It was minor and the PA that did procedure no longer works there. They do not book appointments properly . I really wanted to give them a chance but they are a complete fail when it comes to running an office. I would not do follow- up here , since procedure was unsuccessful and they have you sitting in waiting room hours . I booked a different office and was called to say that it would be Cosmetic now and I would need to pay out of pocket - THEY ALREADY GOT PAID IN FULL HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS !! This was the follow-up which according to NYS law it unethical to not see patient after surgery procedure . They have been reported and awaiting outcome. I had a very disappointing experience at this dermatologist's office due to unexpected out-of-network lab charges. Despite the office being in my insurance network, they sent my lab tests to an out-of-network facility and provider. This resulted in a $175 deductible that I was not informed of beforehand and would not have consented to. In office they only mentioned my $25 copay. New patients should be aware that providing a credit card on file is required, and it can be automatically charged for out-of-network lab fees. It feels very unfair and unethical. My mom and I have both been seen by Dr. Mariam Nik. Our experience has been excellent. My mom is a little hard of hearing and English is her second language, Dr. Mariam Nik has been wonderful with her. She's patient, listens carefully and takes the time to explain all concerns. They also gave us some free samples which have worked wonders. Unfortunately, some of the creams or treatments aren't always covered by our health insurance but they always let you know beforehand which I really appreciate. Also, Ive never had an issue with wait time, the most has been about 15 min which is pretty reasonable. read more

The worst experience I have ever had in the medical field. I had a visit last year and they ovecharged me and I have been trying for a couple of months to get a refund and they have been saying you will get it but that never happened. I spoke to Liz who claims to be the Billing Manager and she was the rudest with the worst attitude ever. Avoid this place at all costs. Run - do not walk - AWAY from this place. I've been there 3 times and every time it has been atrocious. You will not be seen until AT LEAST 30 minutes after your appointment time. The last time I was there, I was the first appointment of the day. They were 40 minutes late. Today I had an appointment and the woman before me had been waiting for 45 minutes. They took her in at almost the 1 hour mark. The place is run by teenagers. The staff act like actual children. The first time I went there, I had a spot on my face. The dr I saw told me they could get rid of it for $200. I said that I wasn't prepared to pay that much money but that I'd think about it. He almost immediately back-pedaled and said "ok we'll do it for free." They did. It barely worked. The spot is still there. I went a few months ago to have a cyst looked at. They told me that they could cut it out and that it would leave a scar or they could do an injection. I opted for the injection. Welp....I'm scarred. Three months later, the skin is sunken in and red. I went back today and they told me that it could take a "very long time" for it to return to normal. "Just don't go in the sun," they said. No ****. Oh and, if you're trans/NB, don't bother with a preferred name. They won't use it. GO ELSEWHERE. read more

As a new patient I was seen quickly, and the PA was pleasant, however she literally only spent about about five minutes with me for a consult, did not examine my skin or seem concerned about the questions I had and generally seemed in rather a hurry to get to the next person. Also two of the medications that they prescribed (in the laziest manner possible) were unable to be filled since they were not covered by my insurance. In keeping with their lackadaisical attitude, they did not respond to me or the pharmacy with an alternative or a prior authorization to get me the meds I supposedly need. read more

I left this same review on Google. Kind of surprised at the negative reviews here. Maybe these people were just crabby or aren't aware as to how the insurance they pay for works (or both). Anyway my review was as follows: I was made aware of this place from an Urgent Care facility down the street who were unable to help my concerns. I love this place and the staff and look forward to them helping me in the future! The girl working the front desk on Saturday was super friendly and cool. I was a walk-in and I saw Dr. Miriam that day I believe. Didn't really take that long to be seen especially considering that I didn't have an appointment. The doctor and the nurse assistant addressed my concerns accordingly and we're both great and made me feel comfortable. I hadn't been able to get what was prescribed to me from the mail-in pharmacy until this Wednesday, and the problem I was having persisted/got worse so I paid another visit on Tuesday and was seen by Dr. Alexandra and the same nurse assistant who again were both amazing, helpful and attentive. I saw Dr. Peter Hashim for my yearly total body skin check. He was very kind and professional as was the entire staff. I was able to get the appointment on very short notice and did not have to wait at all when I arrived for my 12pm appointment. There was an issue with a prescription and I called to deal with it. The Dermatology Specialists in Astoria. Was able to secure an appointment for my 11 year old son right away. Was initially scheduled in bayside, but called and moved to Astoria site. The place was very clean, modern, and well staffed. Workers were friendly. Wait, it was not long. My son was first seen by a medical assistant, then a PA, then the doctor. If you are going for something minor then it may work out for you. Hard to find a real MD to see you. Otherwise it's a PA who in the long run is not board certified. A good doctor can tell right away what kind of tumor it is and how to proceed. If you have a serious issue aside from acne then go see a real doctor. I never met the provider so my review is only of this organization. I tried to see two different doctors at two different offices yesterday after making appointments on ZocDoc. First, I arrived at the Greenpoint office in the afternoon for a scheduled appointment. Upon arrival I noticed the waiting room was full and overheard a patient questioning why she had already been waiting 1.5 hours. When I asked what was going on the receptionist explained that there was only one doctor there today and everyone was waiting for the same person. It would be at least a TWO HOUR WAIT. I had to return to work so I considered it a fluke and rescheduled on ZocDoc for the Astoria location later that evening. Upon arrival at the Astoria location I started getting worried because this waiting room was also full. Have I mentioned that this is clearly not a pandemic friendly practice? The receptionist could not find my appointment because they had scheduled me with a doctor that wasn't even there that day! The receptionist said she could check me in anyway When I inquired about the wait time, I had dejavu when she calmly explained that everyone was waiting for the same doctor and that it would be a 30 minute wait. I found this questionable since there were 7 or 8 people waiting. The plan was to spend 4 minutes with each patient? I walked right out of there. I never met the providers, so I can't speak to them. The receptionists seemed very stressed but were friendly and informative. The problem is clearly with the organization itself. They completely overbook and in normal times it's just inconsiderate. During a pandemic it's completely unacceptable. As a RN who has worked in outpatient settings for years, I can say that I have never seen anything like this. I've been a patient here for two years, but I'm moving on. The staff at this location have ignored me for months trying to get a prescription filled. They've now twice failed to contact my pharmacist to get said script filled. I ended up calling the pharmacy to find out why things haven't been filled and they actually told me that they reached out to the location multiple times and they never got back to them! They don't follow up, they don't double check and make sure that things get done. The doctors here are fine but the lack of follow-through on their staff's end should make you run away from this place. read more

This isn't specific to the location. I made an appointment to the Elmhurst location. I drove there in a mad rush, paid for parking and walked up to a locked door with lights out. When I called the main line I was told that someone tried to call me but they got my voicemail, yet somehow I received no message. When I told them woman that she changed her story and said my appointment was for the 17th (I know for a FACT that it was made for today, the 3rd). I asked her to squeeze me into another location but told her I didn't want to wait given how much time I've already wasted and was told it would be at least two hours of waiting if I went anywhere else so I said forget it and told her that I would not recommend the chain given my experience and hung up. Seconds after I got a "No caller ID" calling me, it was the woman saying "if you hang up on me again, you better watch your back, I have your address." She took my personal info from my file, blocked her number and harassed me. I hung up and she persisted on calling a few more times blocking her number. If I had proof I would go to the cops. She should be fired immediately. I hope the business looks into my claims. read more

It all started out great with the front end employee. She was very pleasant. However, after waiting for about a half hour and getting passed to the woman that deals with insurances, it went down hill. First, she told me my insurance was terminated. That was impossible because I went into my app and it clearly said I was active. After that, she said we don't accept your insurance here. So which one was it? Incompetence. As a pharmacist, I deal with insurances every day. She lied to me. I will not be recommending this Astoria location to anyone. I wish I got her name but I'm sure she has been rude in the past. Dr. Nik and her team are awesome! Everyone I've dealt with is super friendly. I was having issues getting the medications covered through my insurance but they were able to send it to a specialty pharmacy and get it covered for me. Dr. Nik doesn't make you feel rushed and wants to work together with you to make sure you are getting the best results possible while making sure you're comfortable with the medications. Also I love that they have free sparkling water in the waiting area for patients. I would definitely recommend stopping in if you're looking for a great dermatologist in the Astoria area. read more

RUN! Stay away from EVERY LOCATION of this wretched company. How many bad reviews do you need to read to believe what everyone is saying?? Worst of the worst of the worst. RUDEST and DUMBEST administrative staff I have ever encountered. Turnover rate is alarmingly high for their staff because they hire unqualified people to handle everything, and you as the patient are the one that ends of paying for it (quite literally). They are now billing me over a year later for services I do not owe and that they are not legally allowed to balance bill patients for, for services which I never agreed to be financially liable for outside of insurance. Harassing phone calls (3 in 1 day), monthly statements mailed and billed even though the doctor told me he would "handle it" and to ignore the bill. That has been going on for the last 4 months and I have even been there in over a year. Even when I was seeing them, the physician was late to every single appointment (one time by almost an hour in the middle of the work day), and there were COUNTLESS epic fails by the staff to correctly fill the simplest and most routine of prescription refills almost every single time. Every appointment will cost you tons of extra time and headaches. They're like a bad rash, which is fitting considering they're a dermatology practice. The doctor is really nice so is the MA. I work in the medical field and I know I have a copayment. Which I always take care of at my appointments as I do not like getting bills. At my visit I specifically asked if I have a copay. I was told NO. It says it on my insurance card. You had my insurance before hand, did you verify it? Instead 2 weeks later I receive and email that I have a balance due because I didn't pay my copay. Medical offices are responsible for collecting copayments at time of service, not billing after the fact. This is not good business. read more

I understand things are pretty nuts right now with COVID, but I've been waiting over a month for a medication that has apparently been stuck in their prior authorization department. These guys are impossible to get a hold of, they don't answer the phone or email. The chat support does not provide concrete answers either. Even going in-person wasn't much help. I came in for my follow-up today. Appointment was for 11:10 AM, so I came in at 11:00 AM. 10 mins go by, I'm fine, 20 mins go by, still fine because delays happen so I don't mind waiting! But then two patients are put in rooms before me and suddenly it's 11:40 AM and only then do one of the two receptionists think to tell me that there are three patients before me in rooms, so it's going to be a wait...for a follow-up. I had to reschedule to tomorrow. Wasted a commute there and back only to end up not being seen. read more

Both times I've gone I have had to wait approximately an hour after my appointment time to be seen despite showing up 30 minutes early. The second time I came, when I left my room to speak up about the wait, everyone looked confused and as if they didn't know I was in a room. Turns out the doctor who was supposed to be seeing me was scheduled for an hour-long procedure at the same time. Very frustrating experience, because everyone was so nice and my skin did improve with the treatment I received, but I will likely not be coming back here with the absurd waits and general overbooking. This place just seems like some sort of cash grab trying to get as many patients as possible. I scheduled an appointment using their website last week as the first (and only) time I went previously, I just walked in. My appointment never got confirmed so I didn't go and just figured whatever. Then I get a random text today saying that I have an appointment next Thursday (lies) and whether I can make it. I said no and canceled it. The system asked if I would like to reschedule and I saw that they had appointments available same day so I made one. I was surprised to receive an appointment confirmation. I hurried, got myself together and hopped in an Uber to make sure I was there in time. Just to find out that the place is closed. According to google the place is still open. Get it together. Y'all have a 2.5 rating so it seems like you'll probably have to close pretty soon. Sucks bc the provider I spoke to seemed nice. But clearly there are some ops issues. Good riddance. Upon walking into the waiting room, it was clear they had overbooked their slots. Not everyone has the luxury of waiting an extra hour beyond their scheduled appointment time.
