My wife and I stayed here last year over Thanksgiving weekend. It is such a cute little hotel in that mid century modern palm springs vibe. The place was clean and quiet. We had good weather, so spent most our time just sitting by the pool and reading. Only demerit is that there is not many restaurants within walking distance, so you have to get in your car and drive. The downtown area is only about 10 mins away though.

Hands down a unique & quiet vacation spot in Palm Springs! This mid-century modern jewel is a must for out of town visitors who are looking for a quiet, relaxed, adult-only vacation that lets you experience the glamour of Palm Springs. Located just south of downtown, the Desert Star is close to just about everything & now newly accessible by "runs every fifteen minutes" free Buzz trolley line. Each apartment at the Desert Star includes a collection of mid-century modern furniture. The kitchenettes are stocked with essentials including an oven/stove, full-size fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and utensils. You'll also find other important vacation necessities like pool towels, yoga mats & your own private courtyard. The Desert Star has an airbnb quality where it feels like your staying in someone's home vs. a hotel. All apartments look onto a spacious pool courtyard area that gets just the right amount of sun for those looking for warmth and just the right amount of shade for those looking to stay cool. The pool is designed for floating & relaxing, not large pool gatherings. At night look forward to cozying up to the large fire pit and enjoying an awesome view of the stars. Free parking, free apple-tv, super-fast wi-fi, clean rooms/common areas & friendly owners (Debra & Richard from MN!) make this place a very pleasant to relax. And it's really affordable with no resort fees - compared to staying at some of the larger resorts in the area. You'll need no more than a few minutes to drive downtown, to grocery store or to any of the fabulous restaurants located in PS. Joshua National Tree is a little less than an hour drive away from the Desert Star. A few notes about the Desert Star... - It's definitely for the more relaxed, older and/or quiet crowd. Don't book a room here if you're looking to party or be loud with a group of friends. If you need just one day of "Palm Springs party" but still want to enjoy the Desert Star I suggest walking across the street to the Ace Hotel where you can buy a day pass to the glamorous LA Hipster pool for only $20! - It's more apartment than hotel. You'll need to bring your own food, coffee, soap/shampoo, sunscreen, etc. (I do wish they'd stock some of these necessities or at least let you know you it's "bring your own" as we had to run out to get all of these things at the grocery store) - At least in apartment #3 the shower pretty much was a no-go. The water was more like a dribble. It was super disappointing as I never quite felt clean the whole time I was there. I chalked this one up to the fact the place is a bit older so the pipes are probably small.

Yummy place! If I could I would come here weekly because it's so delicious. Nice staff and the store is clean.

Walter and Davy no longer own the Desert Star, which is a bummer. The place is still cool, but I miss the hosts.

We came with a big group of families and stayed in several of the different casitas throughout the property, which was honestly perfect. We basically had our own little ranch getaway! Each casita had separate bedrooms, a full kitchen and living room, so there was plenty of space for everyone to spread out and feel comfortable. The kids absolutely LOVED all the animals! There are horses, donkeys, goats, rabbits and more, and guests can interact with, pet and sometimes even ride the animals. One morning, the ranch manager took all of our kids around to visit the animals and gave each of them food and carrots to feed them. They had the best time and thought it was the coolest thing! The pool area was probably one of my favorite parts of the property. The pool was the perfect temperature and the setting is gorgeous -- there's a huge natural boulder right alongside it and the mountains are basically your backdrop. There are cabanas for lounging and a long shaded table where our whole group could sit together and eat meals. It was such a pretty, relaxing spot. And then there's the SALOON! Such a fun touch and definitely a hit with our group. It has western-style saloon doors, a bar area, an air-conditioned game room with pool tables, and picnic tables outside. We spent a lot of time hanging out there. There's also a fire pit by the main ranch house where the kids made s'mores at night, which was the perfect way to end the day. This is such a great place for families or groups traveling together who want something different from the typical Palm Springs hotel experience. You really feel like you've escaped to a little mountain/cowboy ranch, while still being close enough to downtown to go out to dinner, shop, or explore. The kids had a blast, the adults got to relax, and having so much of the ranch to ourselves made the whole weekend even more special. Such a hidden gem in Palm Springs!!

The pool area with the back drop of the mountains is so beautiful. The saloon area is so nicely done and the accommodations are clean, comfortable and have everything you need. It's also great because there are so many casitas so multiple families can rent the homes and enjoy the property together. It's also so nice seeing all the horses and other animals on the property which makes it fun for kids. Can't wait to come back!

MY CAR WAS STOLEN OUT OF THE GARAGE IN THE GATED COMMUNITY OF 7 LAKES where I was renting from Jim Murphy for almost 2 years. I had to remain there until I got my car repaired. I asked Laurie Scully (who is so lovely and i guess has to take orders for Jim Murphy) at Mod Mansions if I needed to give a 30 day notice and she said that under the circumstances that I did not need to give a 30 day notice because they knew I was waiting for my car to be fully repaired. During my time there I was constantly insulted by the owner calling me names, always a condescending jerk. From the first night that I spent there I had problems that started with no hot water. They finally had to replace the water heater after 4 days without hot water about a month later. Water from the AC flooded the foyer. Water came from the drains and flooded the primary bathroom and bedroom. Flys made nests in the rotted skylights. Even a few days before I left the apartment immaculate I was told that I would be charged daily DEDUCTED FROM THE DEPOSIT THAT WOULD BE RETURNED TO ME if I stayed even a day longer. So I was sure to be out by the last day of the month. It would be the first of December after many emails and phone calls that I received and email that "if he had rented it" that he was going to give me my deposit back, or part of it.
