I purchased a diamond online (I know, big risk...but smart enough to ensure it was one with a no questions asked return policy). I had an appointment with Mr. Hutton within two days of my initial request for consultation. He is pretty quick to respond, and since he works from home, he has weekend appointments! I told him off the bat that I didn't want a full on appraisal, just a consultation to make sure I was getting what I paid for and not a piece of plastic. I got to his home office and was impressed by all the gemology equipment he had and knew I was in good hands. He is personable and knowledgeable. He ran some tests on the stone and explained in detail about the tests, gave some insights into how my stone was probably cut, and took measurements to ensure the size/weight was the same I was told it was by the retailer. Luckily for me I got what I paid for and wasn't duped. I will definitely be coming back to Mr. Hutton to get a full appraisal on the both the stone and setting once I get the engagement ring made up. read more

My fiancé bought me an engagement ring from a local jeweler and after hearing some bad things about the company, I decided to take my ring in to Michael and have it evaluated. Michael took the time to listen to my whole situation on the phone and even gave me some great unbiased advice as to what he would do in my situation. This was all before I even made an appointment! Anyway, he squeezed me in for a 7pm appointment the same day, very accommodating. When I showed up, Michael got straight to work evaluating my diamond and, my goodness, I was instantly blown away by his knowledge. His evaluation was SO in depth and extremely informative. I hired Michael to appraise a diamond ring I brought on line. Michael was extremely thorough, accurate and professional and very reasonably priced. He must have spent 8 hours on my appraisal and did amazing and extremely accurate work. His knowledge is unsurpassed in my opinion and he was very easy to work with and accommodated my "rush" job. He also responded to several emails I sent him before and after the appraisal was done trying to further help me. I would highly recommend Michael for any diamond appraisal work and might suggest that if you are thinking of buying a diamond you may want to see him first as he can give you some expert tips and tell you things to avoid (I wish I had). In my case, unfortunately Michael identified several flaws and erroneous misstatements in the EGL appraisal on the ring I purchased so I returned it to get my money back.
