We really wanted to love this spot as we adore retro diners but unfortunately it let us down. The first sign of trouble was, despite the signs advising that masks were a must 3/4 of the patrons were maskless. Like the good southerners they were there was much hugging and hand shaking going on. Even the servers, although masked would remove them when they talked! There is a dining area but we were wanting take-out. It didn't take long to prepare but customers were packed in like sardines. The food was okay. The burgers were good but not worth getting Covid for. The onion rings looked beautiful but gave us what my daughter referred to as "Capt Crunch mouth". Although we ordered the "specials" we were charged full price. That was irritating but not worth wading through the mob to fix. It's advertised as "The Place Locals Go". Back in Greenwood to pulled into a place that looked right out of the old sitcom tv shows to see a large 1950's sign saying Dixie drive in love it . Went inside to see what I thought and hoped to see a great piece of history. A horse shoe shaped dining counter and no tables just one large eating counter that you walk up to and feel like you're in a back to the future looking soda shop . Well I was approached with a smile and given a menu to see and I chose a grilled chicken sandwich with fries and coleslaw. Not a bit under cooked just right . I was impressed with the unique flavor of the barbecue sauce I received on the side all in all was a good meal but needed to add a little black pepper to the coleslaw but that's just me. I love the dixie drive in, but my problem is with the concession stand and the bathrooms. We got there at 8:30pm settled in and went to the concession stand to get hot dogs and hamburgers, begore the movie even started they was out of hot dogs and they only had 1 hamburger, not very happy about that since they just opened and they close before the intermission is even over. The bathrooms need a remodeling because they are so small and some have no doors and some have curtains and they are very small not good for people with disabilities at all. I had a panic attack last time. because they are so small. The people that wait on you when you pay to get in are always nice and very helpful. Omgoodness!! This was a wonder to be included in! They opened at 11:30 and at 11:15 people ( including us) were lined up at the door !! The door opened and in we went. This is an old fashioned diner ,stools for sitting swiveled and everything! It's a place to go for a fun experience, but there are better burgers to be had elsewhere. Their current sign reads "friends don't let friends eat at restaurant chains"... I'm not sure I'd go there. This is my favorite dive in Greenwood. I grew up with it. When I moved away for 10 years, it was always a stop when I came back. I just moved back and was happy to find that nothing much has changed. I think that's a good thing in a world of ever-updating menus. Sometimes you just gotta stick with what works. To me, the good is great, but I wonder how much of what I'm tasting is nostalgia. Oh, and sweet tea! I get the appeal for locals looking for a quick bite at a local staple. The food is decent and folks seem pretty nice. The food quality is consistent with similar establishments, and I'm reluctant to be too critical of an establishment that isn't trying to churn out or compete with gourmet burgers, dogs and steaks. Wow, where to start. If you talk to the older people or the deep south natives of Greenwood you would think this was heaven on earth. It is not. It has fries that you can buy from any grocery store. The burgers are small and bland. Everything tastes like they put frying oil in it. The price is an insult for the quality and quantity of food you receive.
