This has to be the worse place in the world to take a dog. My husband and I were going to be out of state for a 8 days and we made reservations to board our 1 year old lab. Our dog is very friendly loving dog. He has lots of energy because he is a puppy. He has never shown any sign of aggression to another dog or person. We dropped him off on Thursday afternoon and we watch later and he was playing with dogs. He was kenneled the next time I checked and I called and was very nice and asked if something was wrong and was told no everything fine that our dog and another were both high energy dogs and they needed a break. I laughed and said it look like he was having a lot of fun. She said he was and he was just fine. Friday it was completely packed in there and I called again and was told that our dog was kenneled because he was aggressive and had we had him neutered. I said you have every bit of his paperwork he has. In fact I made sure before I brought him and had a confirmed email from Kara stating that everything was there. Our dog had stayed there before for 4 days. I told them that he is absolutely not aggressive and that if we go to dog parks or vets he plays with dogs and is very friendly. Then the guy suggested I come and get him. I asked if anyone ever look at paperwork or checked to see what instructions were because we were out of state me staying with my granddaughter and my husband in Pasco Washington working. He told me to figure it out. I then talked to owner Shannon and asked her if she found paperwork showing him neutered and she said she did and that our dog was let out of kennel. I told her that I was looking at camera and he was in kennel. She said she would go check and call me back. She assured me on Friday everything was great and to enjoy my trip. Saturday morning I get a call from our vet wanting me to know that the dog bark had called them a few minutes before and wanted to know if our dog was neutered. She told them yes but wanted me to know because they knew they had all paperwork. I called the dog bark and asked for Shannon and she wasn't back until Tuesday. I talked to Kara and she said the dog was aggressive and would be kenneled. I told her that I talked to Shannon and she said everything was fine just checking to see if neutered. I started to get really scared that they could hurt our dog and told her that. I said they were completely incompetent and don't even look at anything you bring to them. I told her that we got asked same question about him being neutered by 5 different staff members. Is anything computerized. I told her I would get ahold of my husband he would have to leave his job in Washington and come and get our dog. While I was still talking to Kara she hung up on me. My husband said when he got there Sunday that Finn looked horrible. He couldn't bark that he would start coughing and chocking. He had really hard time drinking and couldn't eat food. My husband brought him to Vet Monday morning and he had to have x-rays on his throat chest and hip because he was limping also. They have him on steroids for severe swelling on his tracheas. They think a choke collar or those grab collars dog catchers use was used on him. The vet bill was over 800 hundred dollars. Calling Shannon today she told me she would refund our money but she didn't like that I had been rude on phone to her people. She put me on hold when I was talking to her. She said that even though our dog was fine while she was there that her boarding facility isn't a dog park or vets office. Even if he was friendly and never had problems their that a boarding place like theirs can cause it. I agree completely if a dog is abused it can cause a lot of problems. Run as fast as you can from this. Update Thursday February 21st another trip to vet first one on the 18th of February we have now spent over 1200.00 dollars. Blood test today show blood in his stomach. The trachea is still hour glass with lots of swelling. Stress doesn't cause this. Our dog is part of our family and we don't want another family to go through this. Never did get refund from Shannon though we paid for 8 days and he was there for 3 1/2. I have found that they lie about a lot there. I was supposed to be very rude but I talked to Anna and Shannon along with Damien and no problems. Talked to Kara and she was sarcastic rude and hung up on me when I questioned her why she would call our vet when she was the one I gave all paperwork to. The rudeness I encountered with Shannon when I called to talk to her Monday after my husband brought our dog to vet was not what I would expect from an owner who was proud of business. My husband and I LOVE the dog bark!!!! We were so thrilled when the North location opened and have taken our dog, Cooper, to stay several times. What we loved most is that they recognized that Cooper is a shy boy (even though he's a lumbering Red-bone Coon Hound!) and the staff is always so gentle and patient with him. He's not the best at listening but they take their time. Cooper is a rescue and when we adopted him at the age of 6, he hadn't been taught any manners, but he's a wonderful dog! The staff at the North location always seem to know who he is when he shows up and howls in their lobby. They even made accommodations for us when we had to leave town last minute and their kennels were full. We constantly give the dog bark glowing recommendations to our friends and family! read more

My dog Luna loves this place so much. When we first brought her home she was a little afraid to get in the car, but now she knows that she is usually going to the dog bark so she jumps right in. The staff are all super friendly, they all know Luna by name and treat her like one of their family. I love the grooming services they offer, I am a busy person so it's so convenient to be able to drop her off before work, then pick her up smelling and looking amazing with her nails trimmed. Be careful.. When you sign the release form - they say will arrange the dogs by size , age, temperament .. Though not liable- they put a 120 lb 31/2 year dog with a 45 lb- 1 1/2 yr old. When the larger dog plays you know the size of him and the smaller - who's going to get hurt.. After 435. Later for a vet bill. Do no recommend . This one was on Commercial Street .. Also if you board your dog- everyone leaves and the dog will be on cam.. Not safe if there was a fire. read more

I can not say enough great things about The Dog Bark and Shannon and staff. I left my basset there for boarding for 5 days and was so VERY PLEASED with the care and attention that was given to her and her daycare playmates! Super clean facility, great personal attention and awesome care. The webcam was great which allowed for us to check in on her. It was great viewing her and seeing the interaction she had with the dogs as well as the staff. Yes, they actually play with the dogs!Everything was just top notch! Fierce has been a client of The Dog Bark almost since they opened - I had recently moved to Salem and had not found any pup care that matched what I had in Portland. But The Dog Bark has been fantastic and meets and exceeds similar businesses in P-Town! They are attentive, professional, fun and most importantly, Fierce has a great time and it helps her stay social and friendly. Bostons can have a tendency to be grumpy and this socialization keeps her interactive with dogs and people. The Dog Bark staff understand dogs are dogs - and they've always been absolutely on it with safety, with the normal little dings that happen and keeping me up to date with Fierce and her happenings. The Dog Bark is a huge asset to Salem's canine community and the PupCam is tons of fun to watch. I've referred many friends and their fur babies there and will continue to do so. Our collie Matty loves going to The Dog Bark! We love taking her there as she always comes home rested & happy. When we arrive in the morning she pulls us through the door tugging on her leash. The owner & people that work there are so nice. We love The Dog Bark! We still love The Dog Bark. Our dog was boarded there about a month ago & we were able to see her via the video cams. Since The Dog Bark closes at 4:30 pm on Saturday they have the employees come back to the facility in the early evening to let the dogs out for about an hour, to play & go potty. read more

The Dog Bark is a great place for dogs to play. Very clean and the staff are always postive with even those corrective issues growing puppies need. My dog is a high energy 9 month shepard/lab mix and she loves going. The location is also really convenient for people working in Salem. read more

I was eager to find a day care for my dog. I selected The Dog Bark in South Salem based on reviews, completed the paperwork on line and promptly received a response to schedule the evaluation. I set up the appointment for the following day. I arrived with my dog on a leash and had all the required paperwork. When I walked in the door, there were two employees standing there, a male and a female. Both of them just stared at me. For a second, I thought I was in the wrong place. I let them know who I was and why I was there. I felt like I was bothering them. The male employee said he would go get things ready. (I didn't understand why things weren't ready since I had an appointment, but ok.) The first words the female employee spoke to me were 'I'm printing your paperwork. Do you have the records?" I provided her with the records I had from my veterinarian. She looked at what I brought, then shoved the papers back at me stating 'there is nothing here I need'. I tried to show her the rabies certificate, spay certificate and vaccination information. She disputed the information with me and said she needed to call my vet. Under normal circumstances, calling the vet wouldn't have been an issue. However, I felt this particular female employee was rude and disrespectful to me. Worst of all, my dog was trying to interact with her and she completely ignored my dog. I left without completing the evaluation as I had serious concerns about the lack of customer service and most important, how my dog was ignored. If my dog was ignored in front of me, how would she be treated when I wasn't there? Disappointing experience. read more

First off, let me begin by stating this is my first yelp review ever. I am not a person compelled to complain. I receive substandard service and bad service all of the time. I used the North location recently for boarding. My two dogs have been going to daycare and boarding for 2.5 years elsewhere with no problems. Hours after drop off, I received a call that one of my dogs needed to be pulled out of play group and would have to spend the duration of her stay in her kennel. No problem. I understand that the safety of the group and liability of the business needs to be held to standards. I am not an unreasonable person. I do however have an issue when there is no back up plan or protocal in place should this need arise. My dogs were left in their assigned kennels and forgotton about. I had to call, after watching the cameras like a hawk, to remind them to give my dog a potty break. She HAD BEEN IN HER KENNEL FOR 14 HOURS WITH NO POTTY BREAK!!! They state that there are always at least two people there to supervise the dogs. THAT IS A LIE. In my opinion, they are understaffed, not properly trained in caine behavior and health, and lack overall organization for the well being of your pet. We have other choices in the Salem area for daycare and boarding. I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more
