What an amazing hidden gem this place is ! You will be so glad you took time to find it ! The Donut may well become "THE " Donut place of choice for anyone living or working or traveling through the Southbay. Actually they have been voted Southbay's Best in the Daily Breeze. So what's so special ? Where shall I start ? At the first bite, you'll know ! They put out the most buttery, flakiest, lightest, tastiest Donuts, Croissants and fresh baked Breakfast Sandwiches I've ever tasted ! The donut dough itself is more like Hawaiian Sweet Roll Bread -- it makes others seem like plain, white "Wonder Bread" in comparison ! They are generous with the icings, toppings and fillings too, and each has their own distinct and bright flavor. Lemon tastes like real lemon, Raspberry like real raspberry, Maple is like real Maple, and the Chocolate is apt to delight a chocolate lover no end ! They now serve "Mini Glazed Donuts" as well as all the regular size and over-sized temptations. The unassuming donut shop has been in the neighborhood since forever - it's a part of what San Pedro is all about. Friendly, helpful service from the very personable owner, baker and from the counter servers as well. They make you feel like you're visiting family, so happy to see you, enthused about sharing what they've made fresh today, and eager to please, and will probably make a regular out of you in short order. Their Drive-Thru has a display window so you aren't just ordering off of some pictures, but can select from the real fresh baked goodies. I woke up this morning and opened up the Yelp app on my phone, looking for local things to do this morning. The Donut was listed as one of the local businesses, so I opened it up and started reading the reviews. What got me first was that all of the reviews were positive, so I figured that this was definitely a place to check out. Some of the reviews said to get there early enough, as some donuts tend to sell out quick, so my husband and I rushed to leave the house, since it was already after 9am. We hurried in the truck and drove down to Gaffey. The Donut is only a few blocks from our house, which was very convenient. There is plenty of parking and they have a little drive thru, as well, but we wanted to go in and see everything. When we walked in, the man behind the counter promptly greeted us and seemed geniunely happy to see us. He was chatting with a "regular" when we came in, which was a good sign that the donuts were tasty. He asked if we knew what we wanted and we told him that we had never been there before, but had read the reviews on Yelp and wanted to try the donuts. He instantly smiled and became kind of excited that we had found him this way and immediately offered my husband and I a mini glaze donut! Our first bite was absolutely deliciousssssssss!!! I see what everyone was talking about with the glaze. It certainly does have a hint of lemon to it, but in no way overpowering. My husband is so picky about certain things and I am not a big donut fan. I don't like how some are so "bready" with a thin layer of icing that soaks through the donut, so it seems more like sweet bread than a donut coated with icing. These are veryyyy far from that. They are amazing! Like one reviewer said, these remind you of the old school donuts that we used to have when we were kids. They are not too thin and not too thick. The maple is delicious, not like a super sugary mess that most donut shops have. You know the ones that make your teeth hurt...aahhheeemmmm Krispy Kreme...talk about yuck! The gentleman behind the counter went through each of the donuts for us, telling us what they were and describing them. He also told us of his favorites, which was nice, as well. We bought 6 mini glaze, which is wonderful to know that they have, considering I am very strict about what I eat and it's a nice treat to be able to have something half the size, if I want it. It makes me feel like I still fulfilled a craving. We also bought a dozen and mixed it up with different ones. We literally took a bite from each when we got home, just to taste and then ate the one that we wanted most. My husband is a big jelly donut fan and when he bit into the lemon jelly donut, it was almost like that scene from Ratatouille (that cartoon with the rat for a chef). Remember the scene where the food critic tasted the ratatouille for the first time and he had a vision of his childhood, lol? Well, that was my husband! Usually, when you get a jelly donut, it has too little filling and the filling isn't good. This lemon one was delicious! Again, it wasn't all bready, either and another thing that we appreciated with the glaze was that it didn't crumble off of the donut as we ate it, like others have. It was so gooey and just perfect! We also ordered coffee and I asked for him to put cream and sugar in mine. Usually, you go somewhere and they ask you how much cream and sugar. He knew exactly how much and it was really good coffee!! We told him that we would be back next weekend, but we will be back tomorrow to get more coffee and maybe an apple fritter or bear claw. We also liked that the taste of the coffee didn't change after eating the donut. Hand down, this place has the best donuts that I have ever had. They are ridiculously good. One would probably think they weren't anything spectacular by looking at the outside and how old the establishment is, but don't be a fool! Stop and grab some donuts and coffee, meet the wonderfully nice and energetic owners and you will definately want to visit again. To the wonderful man that helped us this morning, thank you! Another place in San Pedro with over-rated reviews :/ The donuts weren't life changing, nor was the selection. They had what you'd expect: glazed, chocolate, maple, donut holes, and some artificial fruit flavored ones like blueberry, raspberry & lemon flavored glaze. I got my order mid-morning, so they didn't taste the freshest, and the dough wasn't as fluffy as people had described. They're really just ordinary donuts to me. :/ The person working there was really nice though & proud to share the shop has been there since 1981. The interior looks like they haven't done much to it since they opened either. There are several tables to sit, but the drive-thru seems much more popular & convenient. Their cash-only limitation seems a bit inconvenient for customers, however. On the bright side, the prices are really inexpensive! Come here if you're in the area & want cheap, simple donuts. I personally would pay a little extra for better quality. read more

This place has a glazed donut that easily powers over the Krispy Kreme version . . . no joke. So, I stumbled upon this place 3 years living in San Pedro. What I liked the most about it is that the donuts are not made at dawn. Therefore, around 7ish I went in and both my donuts were fresh out. Granted the selection was not much at the moment, the glazed caught my attention because it was so fresh looking, so fluffy and perfectly glazed. Aside that I also got a cinnamon roll that looked equally delicious as the glazed. Let me tell you, these donuts are heavenly. The glazed was like butter in my mouth and gone within a matter of seconds. They were also so soft, and definitely knocked out the Krispy Kreme glazed from my top position. First of all it has a B rating. There is a very limited selection of donuts and they were definitely nothing special. I was afraid to buy any because of the rating but was in a rush so bought some anyway for a meeting. The service was ok and parking is limited. I wouldn't go out of my way to return here. Why do people always bring corporate donuts to work? You know who I'm talking about, Krispy-Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts. Ugh- those taste stale and fake. The Donut is old school homemade mom and pop donuts that are to die for. My favorites are their glazed cinnamon twists and their jelly donuts. They are fresh and they taste that way! Also they have donut holes and a kind of mini-glazed donut that I'll bring to parties because everyone will eat a "small" donut! They open very early and when they run out, they close, so don't be late! Oh and they've always had a drive-thru, so that turned out to be great once COVID-19 started. In my opinion they make the best Donut. Whenever I go to San Pedro I always stop there and bring a box of donuts back to the family. Also very reasonably priced compared to others. They have a drive-thru which of course is convenient and smart considering the current Pandemic. They have the health grade letter "A" in their window. If I remember correctly Bob and Dara have been the owners for around 40 years now, but "The Donut" was there even before they were the owners. This place is not that great. I read reviews and thought it was worth the drive. The drivethur gave it an extra star. First no cronuts something too expensive for San Pedro per employee wth. I'm a donut connoisseur and this place is definitely up there in my top donut places in LA. We tried the mini glazed, apple fritter, and a cherry jubilee. The mini glazed had a citrus flavor, very light and fluffy. The owner told us that this is their best seller and I totally get it. Cherry jubilee is their version of cherry filled donut, just a swirl of cherry jam inside the donut which I do appreciate better (I just always prefer less sweet donuts). Apple fritter is more like a mix between an apple fritter and an apple pie. Huge chunks of apple baked inside their signature fluffy bun and lots of cinnamon. The Donut on Gaffey St. in San Pedro is old school donuts done RIGHT! Here's why: First, the owner is way cool. Upon entering the store I said "hey whas up" to a guy who was just sitting in one of the booths, he said "hi" back. Then I asked him if the donuts were any good because a local Yelper had recommended I try the place. Dude sitting in booth perked up and announced he was the owner and told the lady behind the counter to give me a free donut because I was a new customer and he wanted the product to speak for itself. Wow! Nice touch guy in booth! Second, the donuts and sands are bomb. Ate that glazed in like two seconds and then really got going. Ordered a croissant sando with egg cheese bacon, he asked me if I wanted ground pepper on the egg which is like one of my favorite things on a breakfast sando, really brings the flavor! Destroyed that and then ordered this cherry thing that was honestly one of the best pastries I've ever had. This place has been owned by same guy for 20 years and is classic Pedro. I've tried some of the other donut shops in San Pedro but The Donut is the best! I'm a huge chocolate donut fan. I order chocolate donuts at whichever donut shop I go to. In town or out of town these are the most chocolatey I've ever had. I use to go to one in Gardena that were pretty chocolatey but these are amazing. Oh man! These donuts are just what donuts should be! The glazed are big and soft and the glaze itself is fresh, with delicious hints of lemon. I especially love the cinnamon twist. And the cake donuts, which I just tried for the first time last week, are soft on the inside, with a slight crispiness on the outside. Perfect! Long live this shop and places like it! Luckily, in California, certain chains have not taken over the entire donut market like they have in the Northeast and we are very lucky for it.
