Found this to be a bit of a mixed bag on a two-night stay in July. It's just a few blocks off the main downtown stretch, but from what I saw that's not much of an advantage. There really isn't a lot in the immediate area of much interest; most of the best that Tucson has to offer is in the greater metro area, not the downtown core. But it is nice that they offer ample parking just steps from your room at no extra charge. The building looks nice from the outside, with its retro mod style and landscaped courtyard. The bar has very limited hours in the summer, but does have a nice drink menu and makes a good spot to hang out. The room was a bit sparse in my opinion. I was under the impression from the website that there would be a nook with a chair for reading, but my room didn't have one. It just had the bed, a couple of nightstands, a dresser, a mini-fridge, and a narrow desk. There's no closet, just a couple of hooks on the wall. The bathroom was basic, with a prefab shower unit. The decor is limited to a couple of vintage lamps and some patterned fabric for the curtains. The bed was comfortable enough and the air conditioner was wonderful at keeping it cool. There's a window next to the door with a top block that isn't covered by a shade, so anyone could stand on a stool from outside and look in the room. I went looking for ice at about 3pm one afternoon. I knew the bar was closed that day, but the entire front office area was locked and no one was around. Summer is slow season, but I wonder what if there were something more urgent than ice? At least the off-season rates are quite low. read more

I stayed at the Downtown Clifton for a recent work trip, only one night but I was pleased with my visit. I like the area it was quiet, but still close to the Downtown stuff and walkable to a bunch of different things. Guess depending on the time of year, you might not want to walk as much. But I was able to get everywhere I wanted to go within 20 minutes walk. There are a ton of great food options all around as well as coffee, shops, and more. The staff was very accommodating and more than willing to help me out with an early check-in. The check in process was really smooth and all they needed was an ID as there was already a credit card on file with my reservation. They handed me a key and showed me my room and that was it. The room was super cute, I love the exposed brick and the decor. The only thing I would know is maybe request a top floor room as being on the bottom floor I could hear the people above me moving around quite a bit. However, it is a really old building and that's just life I guess. read more

The Downtown Clifton Hotel is an exceptionally cool 3-star boutique hotel in Tucson, AZ. It's all about the modern-meets-throwback vibes and friendly, laidback atmosphere at TDC. In late October, I called to inquire about a room that would accommodate my young daughters and I just before Thanksgiving. Unfortunately there was a wedding that weekend and all of the rooms were sold out. The friendly, assistive employee on the other line was apologetic, but when I asked about the following weekend he quickly suggested his favorite room. Their bunkhouse rooms have king beds, but none were available. Because all of their "señorita" rooms have only queen beds and they were unable to accommodate us the previous weekend, the employee I spoke to on the phone divulged he would provide a rollaway bed for us at no extra charge. My heart swelled! When we arrived, the parking lot and xeriscaping were minimal, yet, clean and inviting. Check-in was quick. Got my old-fashioned key... walked a short distance from the lobby. When I opened the door for my girls, we were all wowed by the vintage furniture and cleanliness. Here were our highlights in no particular order: + Restaurant on site called The Red Light Lounge with full bar + Friendly staff all around + Handwritten note by cleaning staff on nightstand + Follow-up postcard when we got home a few days later + Well-stocked bathroom including makeup removal wipes, hair dryer, and plenty of towels + Free WI-FI internet + Netflix & other apps on wall-hung flatscreen TV + Microwave & mini fridge + Curated art in our room & the lobby/restaurant + Vinyl records & books to borrow + Complimentary coffee every morning locally roasted from Decibal Coffee + Remote control operated room cooler/heater + Dogs allowed & more! Room #9 ended up being surprisingly peaceful and uneventful outside with an alley right behind us which was key for me as I had another long drive with no backup driver the following day. It was $148.54 for one night (11/27/21). Honestly, I've stayed at a few places in various areas of Tucson now over the years. This place ranks the highest even with my kids in tow. I can't wait to explore the area more next time. read more

Came here to check out a LGBTQ Latino dance night. Compared to most of what's going on downtown it's a little bit south of beaten path. But what a sweet little motel with a really nice outdoor patio. The outside might be a little underwhelming when you first approach, but trust me, it is really nice inside and has been remodeled. Just a very nice relaxing venue. I will certainly be back if they have another concert or activity. read more

Wow! What an amazing experience. I didn't expect much coming to Tucson but this is the cutest spot I've been to here! The room was comfortable, the food at the restaurant was delicious. Shoutout to chef Vinny and Gabi. The bartender Raul was so personable and made the best tasting drinks. Not the standard basic options you generally get. I'd rate it 10 out of 10 if I could. Very basic room. We only stayed 1 Night instead of 2. Queen bed very soft - we couldn't get away from the middle of the bed The bed had a very thin cover over the sheet. No blanket. AC/heat unit on the wall was so loud we had to turn it off to sleep. We had to share towels. Only 2 bath towels, 1 hand towel and 1 washcloth. At least the room was clean. read more

I had a mostly nice stay at the Downtown Clifton. The refurbished retro hotel had exactly the aesthetic I wanted for my weekend getaway. From the mid-century room decor, to the physical keys, this spot was perfect for this vintage lover! Unfortunately, my room didn't have a record player as they advertised (is it only some rooms?). The bathroom was clearly not cleaned properly. There was hair in the shower and more hair and dirt on the floor. I was tired when I initially arrived and went to bed, but realized in the morning and it was a bit too late to address at that point. Bed was very comfortable, and room was nice and cool. I was in room #1 which sits next to what I assume is a staff private residence? All night long through the first night, whoever resides there was going in and out, slamming the metal screen door. It was incredibly disruptive and I did not get to sleep properly. Very disappointing. Front desk was extremely cheerful and helpful with checking in/out. I might stay again in the future but will definitely request a different type of room. read more

Stayed here several times before the addition was made and loved it. Funky old rooms with great art and mid mod furniture. Felt amazing to step back in time. This time I stayed in the newly built 2 story addition and was so disappointed. Now it seems like another cheaply put together trendy hotel that is already showing signs of wear and neglect. Stained towels, dirty shower curtain, holes in walls and lampshades, ripped furniture, outlets hanging out of the wall and worn raggedy window shades. My biggest complaint though is the lack of blankets. Count on sheets and a light coverlet that may or may not get washed regularly. I'm guessing not. read more

We flew to AZ with reservations here (3/7-9/25), but arrived to find the hotel had closed "for renovations" and left a piece of paper taped to the lobby door with a fake email and fake phone number to contact for reimbursements. The main hotel email bounced back, too. Hope no one gets stuck scrambling for other accommodations, as they did not choose to contact us ahead of time with this information. read more

This is a cool vintage boutique hotel in Tucson. They expanded, and have added, a bar, and lounge that serves up some great food. Your first round of drinks are free when you stay at the hotel. The tacos were delicious, and the fry bread put mine to shame. My husband wanted another order, yup, that good! He also ordered chips, and salsa, and cauliflower tacos. Both of which were fantastic. He then ordered an Impressive cocktail called the Night Cap which has both Bourbon, and Mezcal, and I kept taking "sips" off my husbands drink ignoring my old fashion. Definitely a great, and relaxing place to lay your head down for the evening. read more

6/5, truly a pleasure to have spent the night here. Every thing is meticulously and thoughtfully designed and planned. There are records/record players available to borrow. The rooms are sparkling clean with gorgeous flooring, 70s era curtains, and vintage furniture, taking you back a few decades. Water is hot; toiletries are provided; the beds are so soft and just firm enough; the pillows felt tailored to us - my husband prefers flatter ones, I prefer fluffier or memory foam - they had two of each kind; there are vintage books by the night stands; beautiful decor on the walls without the space feeling stuffy and gauche. Every time we stepped into our room, we felt like we were home. The air felt crisp, not humid, and was set at a great temp. The bar/kitchen was also incredible. We stepped outside in the evening for a couple drinks, chips, and split a poblano pepper entre - perfectly toasted with Gouda cheese and a gorgeous red cabbage salad. What a dream. read more

My wife and stayed here for two nights on a quick trip to bisbee. We got in later than we wanted to but food was still being served at the bar. For bar food it actually pretty good. The staff was friendly throughout our stay but it might've had something to our pup. The Clifton is nicely updated with retro-modern touches here and there. I recommend staying on the 2nd floor if you want to sleep well. We had a Shrek/Fiona above us on night 2, there was no mistaking their presence. read more

ThIs review is for the Red Light Lounge. I'm a local therefore I haven't stayed at he hotel, but fellow downtown dwellers recommended I check it out for drinks and even a bite. The lounge is cozy and casual- a fun mix of locals and hotel guests. While they do have a food menu, everything is order at the counter. So, don't expect table service. The bar service is friendly although not the most refined in regards to quality cocktails. The drinks are strong but at least they don't come with those crazy prices that most hotel lounges charge. You can an old fashioned got like $8. One drink was good for me. It was just too strong For food we ordered the Burger, which was a-ok. It's served on fry bread. But it was lacking flavor. It was in the bland side. I ordered the albóndiga soup and really enjoyed it. It Was quite good- not overly salted and the broth was clear as it should be. I was impressed! The menu is a southwestern mix of Mexican and native influence. Its fun and priced fair. I'm. It sure if go back soon just to eat but maybe for nightcap and to scope out the loca scene a the bar. Cute boutique hotel! Rooms are nice, maybe recently renovated? I took away a star because the ceilings are paper thin - we could hear the room above us clear as day. Luckily they weren't super loud or up late so it ended up not being a big deal but if you're a light sleeper ask for a second floor room. Didn't get a chance to hangout in the lounge but that was cute too and had a decent amount of people in there! We would definitely stay again next time we're in Tucson. read more

This place is just wow. It completely exceeded my expectations. The vibe is super cool, the customer service is warm and welcoming, and the property and our room was extremely clean. We were in town for just a night and we weren't sure what to expect in regards to both the motel and the location. Location is great. I felt very safe and our room was so cozy. The room has a little fridge and a microwave. The bathroom is good sized and the water pressure in the shower was perfect. Beds are soft and we slept great! Highly recommend. Don't forget to get some of the complimentary iced coffee from the lobby bar in the morning. My husband liked it so much he had me call to ask what it was after we had already checked out. read more

My husband and I called the Clifton home for our 5-night stay in Tucson last month. We reserved a queen room, and the hotel accommodated our specified upstairs preference. Check-in was quick and easy, lots of parking in their private lot for the duration of our stay, rooms are spacious and outfitted with mid-century vintage decor, and their bar was our favorite in town. Seriously, friendly bartenders serving up delicious cocktails that won't break the bank, plus low-key patio, it's a place where passers-through and locals alike can be found. Had their food fare been as good as their drinks we may have never ventured out. As it was, we found our two meals on the lackluster side. The Creamy Mac & Cheese in particular was disappointing and in no way lived up to its name (was not creamy nor macaroni, rather a cellentani-like pasta with what I'd describe as a thin peppery cheese-broth). Coffee's available in the mornings but no breakfasty items. They do partner with a number of restaurants (and shops) around town, though, and they encouraged us to "jingle our keys" at them to cash in on discounts. This worked about half the time. The other half returned vacant stares and no discount (I'm looking at you, Exo) which was sort of awkward. Maybe better to give out actual coupons with discount codes for guests to use instead. As far as our room itself goes, it was mostly great, but our mattress was well past the point of needing to be replaced. We had to build a wall of pillows between us so we wouldn't roll into the dip. The bathroom also had a ton of hair on the floor when we arrived but was otherwise clean (shower, sink, toilet). I appreciated the good quality full-size lotions and soaps. Excellent location. Far enough removed from downtown to enjoy some peace and quiet but an easy 10-minute walk to the action. We'd certainly stay again. read more

Cannot say enough good things about this place. Being from CA and in construction, I am always critiquing hotels and infrastructure. Going out to Tucson (hate to even say this), but I didn't really expect much out a hotel. Low and behold, I was wrong. The Downtown Clifton exceeded my greatest expectations and I will definitely be going back. From the minute we arrived, our experience was not only good, but great. The front desk was extremely laid back and even walked us to our room to show us everything about the room - we loved it because that's old school and you don't see that anymore. Great hospitality. Onto the room. My GF and I loved the décor in the room. Since this place was recently built, the rooms are very open and new looking. Shower and bathroom are large and newly renovated, which makes the place look and feel great. The furniture, which we were told is different in each room and purchased from Flea markets around the city, was absolutely fabulous and my GF wanted many of the pieces in our own place. Very stylish and sleek, and the bed was extremely large and comfortable as well. Onto the Bar/Restaurant. The new bar/restaurant is fabulous. Being just outside a place where you can get drinks and food and walk back up to your room is just awesome. The prices were great, drinks were made well (had what appeared to be a mixologist making good drinks. I got an old fashion and it was delicioso, my lady a martini) and the food looks great, although we didn't have any of the food since we went out to family's each day/night. Anyway, the place really seemed like a place that many couples went on a first or anniversary date. Really good, warming and welcoming. They also provide complimentary cold water 24/7, and also coffee/tea in the mornings/late afternoon. They even offered to bring it up to our room. Upon our checkout, we were given late checkout (time at our discretion which was awesome since our flight was around 4pm and we were really hung over so woke up at 11am). The staff was awesome, very pleasurable and nice to be around. As you can tell, we really enjoyed our stay and feel that the price we paid was accurate as far as the amenities we were provided and the style of the hotel. We will most definitely be staying here again next time we are in Tucson and cannot recommend it enough. Oh yeah and btw, the rooms have WIFI, Netflix, Hulu and HBO! Last night we stayed here to attend the Styx concert. Not only was the concert great, so was staying at this nastalgic and quaint hotel within walking distance to our venue. The entire process from booking to checking out was a breeze. Several days before our stay I was pleasantly surprised by receiving a "welcome" email from Kate. And Matt, whom checked us in/out, couldn't have been more of a ray of sunshine with his stellar customer service. If only more establishments had people like the two of them, the world may be a better place. This is an older hotel, with a lot of character. The room (of which I neglected to take photos) is just as it appears on their website. It's off the beaten path, nice and quiet at night, and for those worried about being downtown, it's just down the road from the police station . Aside from the construction noise in the morning (of which we knew about as they are expanding with more rooms) it was a pleasant experience. We were able to borrow a record player and records from the front office to listen to some old school music in our room. And some dang delicious coffee is ready in the front office at 7am-yea, they brew it for you. We received a voucher for breakfast down the street at 5 points market (an awesome place to eat) as they are working on building their own restaurant currently. When in downtown Tucson, you should swing by and check this all business out and book a stay here. This little funky, eclectic, hometown Tucson business is going places. I will definitely be staying there my next visit to downtown Tucson and I can't wait to see the new additions of the new rooms. read more

I am sure this hotel is great if you like to drink and party, but if you want a quiet, relaxing experience try someplace different. The movie being shown outside in the courtyard was so loud that it shook the building. The food was good for bar food but nothing special. No breakfast available onsite. Employees seem burned out and unenthusiastic about guest service. Room was clean, but furniture was stained and shades were ripped. The fake retro decor is poorly done. I would say this is not hotel but a bar with beds. read more

My wife and I came in for the Gem Show. We got one of the rooms with a king bed. I wondered why it was the same price as the queen. We found out when we arrived. We were disappointed and spoke with someone at the front desk. Turned out, she was the owner. She moved us into another room which was night and day better IMO. Our stay was great! They have a really good bar with entertainment on the weekends. They also allow dogs which was a bonus. Location is pretty good also. read more

From intentionally designed mod meets modern meets rustic rooms that are spacious and comfortable to Chef Nico's to die for food downstairs, we couldn't get enough of the vibes Downtown Clifton was giving out. There's tons of outdoors space and even a fire pit to spend the evening sipping and relaxing. As the final touch, all the staff at Downtown Clifton are genuine, down to earth people committed to offering an exceptional experience in the environment they have come to view as a second home. Unfortunately, our stay at the hotel was a bit of a nightmare When we arrived, we loved it. Friendly receptionist, lovely outdoor space, great mid century decor. Very comfortable. A promising start. We went into town and came back hoping to wind down and get to bed early. We had arisen at 5 AM and traveled. When we got back around 8:30 in the evening we felt like our bed was in the middle of a bar, playing exceedingly loud and very unpleasant music. Maybe this would work for some people , but this should be communicated upfront. Seems like the hotel needs to decide whether it wants to be a bar or a motel. Loud music and people speaking in loud voices with a few drinks in their system is not conducive to relaxing in the privacy of one's room . Unfortunately, we would never recommend this place. If not for that aspect, we would've loved it read more

There's a bar with food and they offer excellent coffee in the morning. It's walkable to downtown and everyone is quite friendly. Overall, a lovely experience. read more

My daughter is the maid of honor for a big wedding in which the whole hotel was reserved. As she lives in England she wasn't aware she had to reserve her own room and only found out a few days before the event. I called and amanda, at the desk was totally helpful. Within 4 hours she found a room for my daughter. When she called back she was so courteous, friendly, helpful and professional. Just amazing read more

There is absolutely no reason to stay anywhere else. The Downtown Clifton might be the best hotel experience I have ever had. My man and I had unexpected work done on the house after we found some mold. So we needed something asap and wernt sure for how long. I had seen the building a couple time driving and took note at how charming it looked and what great area it was in so we gave them a call . We booked through the hotel (not through a third party) and also were pleasantly surprised to find out they allow all dog types for a reasonable 1 time $40 fee. So we thew our luggage and pitbull in the car and headed for check in. Receptionist was so friendly , quick and super efficient! $114 later we walked into our charming unique mid century/Western room on the north side of the property. It's the original building and they did such great job updating it . We also could pull the car right up to the door which is so convenient. Comfortable bed and ice Cold room (if you crank it down. ...slept great and checked out the next morning. Couple days later the major work started at home.. So we checked back in and are now in the new rooms overlooking the patio to the restaurant. Food is fantastic! Worth coming here just for food! Really fun bar crowd. We are basically renewing each am because work is not finished with and we don't have an exact date. The staff have been so accommodating and understanding. It's been a pleasure staying here ; really . All the other hotels in the same price range treat you like stearage if you need to change your check out date and God forbid you sleep past checkout! The experience at downtown Clifton is literally the opposite. Really I can go on an on on how amazing this place is. I am sure you will have the same experience! Mostly ok... recommended by a friend as I'm passing through and needed an easy place for a short stay on my way home to Palm Springs (I get the mid mod motor lodge hipster community vibe).... However, I checked in around 7, was told the restaurant was open until 10. I felt unwelcome at the restaurant and bar, the bartender was unfriendly and acted like he was doing me a favor. I ordered a local IPA and was given a pint glass that seemed dirty. I approached him and asked for a chilled glass as at least I would think it would be clean and he said Oh no, we don't have chilled glasses, that's a big no no in the craft beer world. Ok guy, if you want to be correct you'd serve it in a tulip but OK. Totally weird vibe in bar, the people who run it seemed uninterested in helping at all, I felt like I was intruding even though I was staying in the hotel. read more

This place has changed! Drastically changed. Its still a nice hotel, in a great location with friendly folks who run it, but... To me the charm, and attention to detail got lost in the translation. The old rooms are still there, but the patio is gone and the parking lot has been paved over and enlarged. Instead of stepping out your front door to this cute, cozy, little patio with the funky mural by local artist Danny Martin, surrounded by views of A Mountain and the neighborhood, now you're just in some parking lot that looks pretty much like every other parking lot of every other hotel in the world. The rooms, in the new building are... O.K. I stayed in room 9, which may be a little different from some of the others, but it was basically a cold concrete box. There were a few pieces of cute furniture reminiscent of the old room's style and charm. In the echoing cavern of the new rooms though, these pieces looked small and lost. The mod light fixture hanging above the table and single chair in the seating area almost made it feel like somewhere you'd be interrogating someone (see my pic title "Lonely Chair"). One thing that did (unfortunately) carry over from the old rooms, was the frustration that there is not an available power outlet near the bed, so charging your devices means moving furniture and unplugging lamps etc.etc. I get that the hotel is supposed to "feel" retro, but, come on. Room 9 lacked any outside light by or over the door so it was difficult to see anything when trying to get inside. There are some nice, big windows in the room but they look right out into the alley and I didn't feel comfortable having the drapes open at any time. People in the alley would be walking by literally a foot away. It would have been sweet if they would have etched some sort of cactus/dessert scene into the bottom half of the windows. That would have provided some privacy whilst still letting in the beautiful Arizona light. The window by the door is similar, in that its very tall, a nice big window, but you can't leave the blind open unless you're comfortable with everyone who walks by having a complete view of your room. Again, a little etched glass or even some glass block would have helped. If I'd have been on the second floor it probably wouldn't have felt so exposed, but I wasn't, so I spent all three days of my visit with every curtain and blind drawn, feeling kind of like a fish in a concrete fish bowl. Really, the feeling I got was that absolutely no thought had been put into making this a room you'd actually want to spend ANY TIME IN AT ALL. The bar and restaurant are charming but the service was erratic, sometimes good, sometimes no one was anywhere to be found. I really miss the vouchers for the corner market. What a shame that those have gone away! The renovation is still new, maybe its just taking some time to get the kinks ironed out. I hope they paint some neat art on the blank white walls outside the rooms and give the place back some of the personality it lost. Otherwise, its just a sort of "meh" experience. I loved the old Downtown Clifton, it was truly a home away from home. I will probably still stay here, but I won't look forward to it like I used to. Very Disappointing. read more

This is a hidden gem in downtown Tucson (where there are lots of hidden gems). The people who work here are very nice. There is great curb appeal but the rooms are even cuter. I highly recommend this place! Also, make sure to grab a drink and eat at the Red Light (the restaurant inside the Motel). Look for my review of that place over on that Yelp entry! read more

Hands down the best place we could have stayed! We had our wedding downtown and the Clifton rented out EVERY SINGLE ROOM for us! We also had our rehearsal dinner with them and the food was PERFECT! They surpassed expectations of vegans and meat eaters alike. The rooms themselves were so freakin cool! As a Tucson native, I never felt more at home. They even helped out when I forgot to bring the champagne to the bridesmaids (it was a necessity!) We ate, we drank, we partied and we'd do it all over again! 14/10 would recommend! read more
