Had no clue this gem was here! Popped in on a Wednesday night for a drink and sat at the bar chatting to the wonderful bartender. I had their specialty Ruby Bulleit cocktail with bourbon, ginger liqueur, and blood orange juice - the blood oranges were so juicy and fresh! My partner enjoyed the Smokey Elder, which had mezcal, ginger beer, and some other fun ingredients. After scanning the ever changing menu on their chalkboard - we were inspired to order the maple creme brûlée with fresh black berries. It was delightful. Just how bad exactly does a restaurant have to be to make someone reactivate a Yelp account that's been dormant for 9 years, just to warn people? Well, apparently this is it. In my nearly 30 years now working in, with, and patronizing the food and beverage industry, I've never experienced such repugnant service as what Suzy and I had at The Downtown Grocery. I should point out that we weren't just the usual tourist who come to Ludlow to ski. We actually lived here for several years, and I couldn't post this review until we moved away because of the owner's repeated behavior of attacking people on social media who disagree with or criticize him. The food here is "fine", it's not actually bad or anything. But it is tiny in portions (a rarity for Vermont), and it's overly "chef-y" without actually executing well. It's one of those places where the chef probably thinks that he would get a Michelin star if only they would come to see him, but I can tell you having eaten at over 100 cumulative Michelin stars in my life this is nowhere close. It fails in flavor, presentation, and execution. But again, not terrible. The setting is actually kind of nice too, somewhat homey which is juxtaposed and ruined by the arrogance of the staff. If you don't mind being guaranteed to wait well beyond your actual reservation time, and then waiting probably another hour just to get some meager first courses, then maybe this is the place for you? I doubt it though, there are so many options just in Ludlow alone, and even more that are worth the 45 minute drive to Woodstock or Manchester to avoid having to eat here if you want a "nice" meal. Whatever you do absolutely avoid coming any time near "stick season" or "mud season" (Vermonters will know) because you're guaranteed to get even worse service then. Ludlow has a ton of restaurants for such a small town, many of them quite good. This is the ONLY place we actively recommended friends and guests of ours to avoid. Downtown Grocery has long been a stalwart of the Ludlow dining scene. In common with many restaurants around here, its small regular menu is supplemented by seasonal blackboard specials. The dining space is cosy and inviting with plenty of ambiance during the year end holidays especially when it is prettily decked out with wreaths, garlands, ribbons and fairy lights. Reservations are absolutely necessary during the peak season. Couples without reservations may eat at its petit bar, seats are up for grabs at the start of dinner service. We have eaten here several times and on this recent visit, were seated at a table in the annex - a conservatory parlour with a glass roof, pine ceiling beams, burlap window treatments and a quaint furnace crackling away. The Wellfleet raw oysters we ordered to start were very fresh, slightly sweet and briny. The onion pickle ice was a lovely accompaniment. So was a crisp and zesty Sauvignon Blanc from Bordeaux we ordered from their wine list. Grilled Flatbread came next. The piquant mix of spicy soppressata, local raclette cheese, peppery arugula leaves and garlic oil on thin crispy bread was very appetising. We also sampled a Butternut Squash Soup loaded with tasty chunks of Maine lobster and garnished with toasted pumpkin seeds and fresh herbs. Our Seared Halibut entrees arrived, perfectly cooked with a helping of tomato beurre blanc and accompanied by creamy lobster risotto and blanched bok choy. Another entree, Breast of Chicken came impeccably roasted, with tender cubes of butternut squash and crisp watercress leaves as accompaniments. The chicken was very flavoursome while the serving of gravy displayed distinct notes of maple syrup and smoked paprika. Do not miss Downtown Grocery's desserts! Here are four we tried: Local Maple Crème Brûlée with fresh berries and mint was smooth and velvety, the added maple flavour was a subtle but welcome deviation. Warm Vermont HoneyCrisp Apple Tart with cinnamon spiced apples and vanilla ice cream was thoroughly enjoyable. It was offered on the menu with house made cheddar ice cream but unfortunately, it ran out. Trio of housemade ice cream / sorbet saw us relishing a scoop of luscious chocolate ice cream, a fruity plum, apricot and ginger sorbet, and a very refreshing pineapple basil sorbet. Three delectable flavours, all smashing. Late Night Breakfast featuring French toast, local dark maple syrup and housemade buttermilk-bacon ice cream was unexpectedly scrumptious. The well caramelised French toast still retained a soft interior which enabled it to soak up the delicious maple syrup while the ice cream, studded with smoked bacon bits, was interestingly both sweet and savory. I had eaten here dozens of times pre covid--this was my first opportunity to revisit one of my favorite spots in Ludlow again. Plan ahead--it's not easy to get a table. The model has changed, no longer are there tons of people crammed in--they seem to take a handful of tables and do their best to superserve those lucky enough to get a reservation. It's an experience...savor it. Abby will work with you to identify the perfect wine and explain every detail. The menu is limited but with that you get ultra fresh and flavorful dishes. We had the shrimp & grits and Ribeye for our entrees and both were amazing. As a former restauranteur I applaud them for doing what works for their family. We always love the DtG and had another great meal there this weekend. They have changed up all the menus for summer so the cocktail list is all new as is the set menu. We had the Pimm's cup and Waterworld cocktails which were both very nice and as well-crafted as always For starters, you cannot go wrong with the roasted oysters. They are a small plate and always delicious. The current preparation is no exception. My wife said the tempura beans tasted especially fresh and the batter was very light this time around. I went for the heirloom salad which is definitely shareable and delicious. For mains, I tried the mako which was a very interesting combination of swordfish and tuna flavors and textures and went very well with the homemade kimchee. She had the deckle steak and loved it as usual. We had the 2011 pepper bridge cab with dinner and it was a very interesting bottle. It drank like a 93+ pointer for the first hour with just a great amount of tannin and fruit. But then it really got tired and a few hours later (we took the bottle home), it was a shadow of its former self. That said, it is a great restaurant value wine and I would definitely recommend it if you are going to drink it within an hour or so of opening. We had the creme brulee and cheddar cheese ice crease for dessert. Farm Fresh Gastronomic Pleasures That was the scene at Downtown Grocery last night. Lured in by the 5 Star Yelp rating, I figured it couldn't be bad, even though we were 200 miles away from home in the middle of rural Vermont. Little did we know that Chef Rogan had worked at the Ritz Carlton in Boston and Mistral in the South End. The menu here embodies the local, farm fresh concept. The regular menu was just the right mix and size and was accompanied by 7 appetizer specials and 7 entree specials. We decided to splurge and ordered the following with the wine flight and an extra glass of Syrah to accompany 2 of our meat entrees. Braised Pork Belly - 10/10 This dish deserves 7 stars and was my favorite of the evening! This was served with roasted potato and peach-cranberry mostarda, which I had to look up for a definition. Mostarda (also called mostarda di frutta) is an Italian condiment made of candied fruit and a mustard flavoured syrup. The fruity glaze complemented the pork belly so well and the flavors played off each other like two passionate tango dancers. I've had a lot of pork belly before and this was probably the best I've ever had. Tongue & Cheek - 7/10 Literally veal tongue on top of fresh cod cheeks. Land meat mixed with fish. Individually, the ingredients were superbly tasty and awesome, but I didn't think the combination was greater than the sum of the parts. I would have preferred to enjoy the tongue and cheeks by themselves . Still a super creative dish and premium, fresh ingredients. Maine Shrimp - 3/10 We didn't intend to order is appetizer but it came to us due to a miscommunication. They graciously took it off our bill and offered to let us keep and enjoy them. The hard part was, they were hard to enjoy for me. I love shrimp, but these were cooked on the outside but semi-raw in the inside. 100% raw or 100% cooked, but none of this in-between stuff. The shrimp were mad fresh, so it was a sad waste of fresh seafood. I ate 3 pieces and was done. They left an undesirable aftertaste in my mouth that needed to be washed away with wine. Carolina Shrimp w/ Grits - 8/10 This was a stellar dish that held its own. Perfectly cooked prawn sized shrimp with lobster flavors through. Very rich and the grits tasted gourmet. I don't even like grits usually but this was divine. Ribeye special w/ Maine Crab - 10/10 A happy marriage of land and sea creatures. The ribeye was top of the line and perfected done. Grass-fed, free range beef with crazy marbleization. Does not get any better!!! It came in 5 or 6 small rolled poker chip sized pieces. The crab was hiding in the Hollaindaise sauce, so I didn't even notice it at first. It was only a bonus to an already foodgasmic experience. Local Pheasant - 3/10 It was probably a mistake to eat this after the super intense pork belly, Carolina shrimp, and ribeye. It tasted dry, and was not satisfying after all we had. House Sorbets - 10/10 Lemon Balm, Pineapple Basil, and Mango sorbets. Not overly sweet. We were each fighting for the last bite! The staff were all very fun, friendly, treated us well, and knew the menu extremely well. $200 in including tax and tip including a wine flight and another glass of wine, but money very well spent. This is my third time at this restaurant and it will be my last. The past two times have been amazing (Jan 2018 and Jan 2019) but this time was not. Yes the food is pricey, but in this small town there are few restaurants like this and the food has always been great, so we didn't mind paying. However, this visit left us wondering why we should pay these high prices for extremely slow service and improperly cooked food. And nothing was done except a few drinks credited off our bill. And yes they spend too much time embellishing every entree as it's delivered! I came here on a Saturday night in December. I didn't have reservations but as my group was 2nd in line at opening at 5:30PM, we sat at the bar. So if you want a table, make reservations. The food was really good. It is pricey for what you get but it's a remote-ish location and there's not many more options in the area for this kind of meal. I think I liked the special menu items more than the ones on the main menu. Their handmade pasta is very satisfying and I would not be upset if it were served in a proper Italian restaurant. The wait staff were all so nice, friendly, and attentive. Their bar seemed creative. Food-wise and service was stellar so on those aspects, I would readily go back. However, their kitchen staff was extremely unprofessional and I think largely responsible some of the negative reviews and my reluctance to recommend this place. Our dinner took 2.5 hours nearly - an hour of it was waiting for our entrees. During this entire time, the head chef was yelling obscenities and berating his kitchen staff for being lazy and unprofessional (ironic). We heard him screaming at the wait staff for pushing his buttons for asking about when orders will come out. I'm not sure if he was styling himself to the likes of Gordon Ramsay but it certainly did not improve the productivity. By the way, this behavior started at 5:32PM when we sat down. The dessert menu seemed really great and that's such a bummer because my group was afraid of being stuck there for another hour waiting for it. read more

We have heard great things about this restaurant. Our cocktail special was terrific, which it should be for $14. The Mesculin salads were fantastic at $13. As our entree we ordered Cacio Pepe for $29, incredibly overpriced, perhaps $7 worth of ingredients (total) for both meals, 1/2 of my wife's meal went in the trash, pretty much tasted like pasta water with a hint of cheese. Rarely open and hard to get a reservation (I have been trying for 2 years!) - this place is a very small but lovely farm to table experience run by husband Rogan (chef) and wife Abby (server and front of the house). There were only 5 tables in service on the night we dined here. Small blackboard menu with 4 choices for appetizer and 4 for entree. A printed wine list doesn't exist but Abby will ask you what type of wine you like and then bring several over to your table for you to try. Wines will be obscure and nothing you've ever heard of but we did settle on a nice red from the Loire region. Abby is very enthusiastic about the locally raised ingredients and will go into detailed descriptions of each dish you are about to be served. We had the garlic shrimp appetizer and the Arugula salad with pancetta and shaved parmesan for starters - both VERY delicious. For entrees we had the roasted halibut and the flank steak with blue cheese - again, both were really great. All in all, an enjoyable and very worthwhile dining experience but again - this is an honest to god 2-person operation, so don't expect to be rushed along. Note - Saturday night dinner service was cancelled and we were asked to have our reservation moved to Sunday night because of something unexpected on the owner's end. Nearly did not keep our reservation after reading a few recent negative reviews. Decided there are always off nights with any restaurant. We are so happy we did! The owner Abby greeted us and gave us a wonderful table in a quiet area which we had requested. Ordered 2 of the bourbon ginger martinis and they were excellent!! Next we had a salad which we shared and it was well prepared and quite good. For entrees we had the Scallops and Eggplant and again, did not disappoint. The spicy eggplant had a kick but not over the top. The Scallops were hot (5 of them) and came over a light creamy risotto like sauce. The Downtown Grocery is a place of brilliance and perfection. Combining southern home cooking with sophisticated flavor profiles, it offers it's patrons an experience they will not quickly forget. Rogan and Abby, a young couple (he's from Vermont, she's from...wait for it...Mississippi), have literally redefined the Ludlow food scene (was it ever a scene?) overnight. When we visited recently, we were warmed immediately with Abby's southern drawl, sat to survey the menu, and that's when it hit me. This place was fantastic! Everything looked so good I didn't know where to begin...from Rabbit Gnnochi, Braised Pork Belly, Shrimp and Grits with Wild Mushroom...I became deliriously gitty with excitement. Unfortunately, I had to decide on something and settled on the Rabbit Gnnochi and Shrimp and Grits. My wife had the pork belly, which after trying I decided if pork could ever be an aphrodisiac, this was it. It literally melted in your mouth, like a beautiful piece of smoky porky butter. When the Rabbit Gnocchi arrived, I must say I was surprised. It was incredibly light and airy for a rabbit dish (which is usually smothered in some sort of heavy sauce). Instead it was paired with a few vegetables and perfectly executed Gnocchi and perfectly whet my appetite for what was to come. Hands down, the co-winner of the night (next to the pork belly of course) was the Shrimp and Grits. Who knew shrimp and grits could play with you on so many different flavor levels. Infused with Vermont cheddar and wild mushrooms, the large jumbo shrimp sank into the soupy, goodness of the grits to create a wonderful combination of seafood, southern goodness. I could see why Abby liked Rogan's grits so much, they literally transported you to the land of spanish moss, warm humid weather, and all things fresh and tasty. The night ended (and I'll end this review) with three scoops of ice cream, Earl Grey Toffee, Bacon, and Buttermilk. If you've never had bacon or earl grey (or for that matter, buttermilk) ice cream, there's yet another reason to experience this new, innovative spot of gastronomic delight tucked back on a side street in little old Ludlow, Vermont. Had my birthday dinner and drinks at the Downtown Grocery on a Friday night. The restaurant was busy but we made reservations ahead of time. Everything from the drinks to the dessert was insanely delicious. I tend not to get the specials when I eat out, I always feel like the restaurant is trying to push out items that are about to go bad or have too much of. But as our server did such a phenomenal job describing the specials, we wound up ordering the appetizers and my husband's entree (he changed his mind about his original order on the spot). The cheesy bread with arugula or spinach? was incredible. I was so full that I barely ate my burger. He ordered the pork chop which he described as melting off the bone. My burger was tasty but not the greatest. The fries were amazing and the little dipping secret sauce complemented the food well. If I am ever in the area again I will gladly drop $100 again on dinner in a heartbeat. read more

One of the best restaurants in the area and certainly in the expanded region. Everything was excellent, just wish I'd come here during previous visits to the area. Ricotta Gnudi (a gnocchi-like dumpling w/o the pasta) with Maine Crab, lovage pesto, and small Vermont tomatoes was a great start. Salmon fritters had a nice smokey flavor and they were light and delicious. Great cocktails with in-house mixers, bitters, etc.... My one regret was that I stuck with the starters and small plates and didn't get to try the ribeye or chicken entrees. I'll be back. read more

We've been to The Downtown Grocery various times over the years and this was definitely our worst visit - and probably our last. The service was extremely slow, the food was undercooked and tremendously overpriced ($17 for flavorless soup, and $46 for a poorly cooked piece of meat) and hearing the kitchen staff yell at each other while trying to eat our meal didn't help. The flowery and over the top food descriptions each time a dish arrived at the table, two complimentary drinks (one only a half glass) and a mediocre sorbet, was not enough to make up for the greatly disappointing visit. read more

Extremely high New York prices, for food that took a long time coming, was either not cooked properly, or had no flavor when delivered. The flowery description of the food each time a dish was served was totally unnecessary. I would rather the food speak for itself. A complimentary drink for everyone at the table would have been a nice gesture after the interminable wait, but was only an afterthought. There was absolutely no apology for the undercooked meat except to say that the waitress should have told us, "we aim for rare to medium rare". I think perhaps they should aim higher! We come here regularly and usually have a great experience, but this past week was not great. The owners have opened an Italian place down the road and as a result, whenever the owner is hosting over there, everything goes downhill here. We showed up for our reservation and had to wait another 30 minutes past our reservation to be seated. Another group was waiting 60 mins after their reservation before getting seated. At the same time, we saw empty tables that no one was getting seated at and remained empty for 15 mins. Seems like a mismanagement. I know it's a busy time of the year, but if the owners can't trust someone else to manage while they are in their other restaurant, maybe they should continuing focusing on one at a time. We have a weekend house in the area and this is usually our go to place, but we might try to discover something else due to the decrease in customer service and increasing price of food (NYC prices at this point) for what it is. read more

Solid place, but not worth the hype. The maitre d is amazing and nice and does like 3 jobs. Waitstaff is good, but food is bland and so heavy on meats with no variety. Most of the other things are out or they do not have enough (3-4 dishes we wanted were not available). Bar tender is great and makes great custom cocktails and the chicken is average. Very well executed food and a very attentive but unobtrusive wait-team. Specials and the small menu were all pretty fantastic across the board for the evening we went. They handled our part of 8 really well. The cocktails and beer specials were all top notch and the wait-team made us feel at home. The prices would be typical of a NYC or Boston restaurant which is understandable given the freshness of the food and hopefully the staff that makes this restaurant happen are paid well to do what they do. What made me a little sad was that nearly the entire restaurant was filled with senior citizens. It gave me a sense that a lot of the younger local folks don't eat here and potentially because of the prices. Lots of cuteness to the restaurant as well. read more

This Ludlow local town favoritw is not everything it's hyped to be. We ate here at 7:15 on a Sunday and got one of the "last reservations" of the evening. We were seated in a small table next to the bar and were treated to rowdy bar patrons shouting obscenities at each other and the bar tender in drunken slurred tones all evening. The dining room was quiet and peaceful and for reasons unknown to me; our reservation yielded the noisy bar area table while walk-in patrons got quiet tables in the main dining room. The daily specials are farm to table which is admirable and appreciated for supporting local farms but the kitchen was overwhelmed and food came out cold and under seasoned. On a positive note, we were able to speak with Melissa who served in a managerial role for the evening. She heard our concerns and sought to explain why they didn't deliver a stellar experience. Ive heard amazing things about DG and had been constantly trying to secure a reservation with no success. You have a laundry list of procedures you need to go through to even eat here (call a week before to reserve, give them what you want to order, email bc they don't have a functioning phone) they call you the day of to get payment. I did this twice only to be cancelled BOTH times. This last time they closed the restaurant and never called me. My husband waiting there for 30 min the day of our reservation and nothing. I tried calling but they give you a long detailed message that they do not take calls and no ability to leave a message. I was so upset and I sent the owner an email letting her know how annoyed I was and inconvenienced I was only to get a reply that was not even apologetic. After I did all thee stupid steps just to eat here. Then she takes to her fB page to publicly shame people who don't agree with their ways. Whatever so over DG i wont be fooled 3 times. This used to be the place in ludlow but now that there are several decent eateries this place cannot compete. read more

Atmosphere and staff were excellent and attentive, but the food was not up to par with the expectation and pricing. Maine steamers were still gritty, ribeye au poivre was medium well pushing into well-done when medium rare was requested. Whole snapper special was overcooked to the point of being dried out. Generally, the pairing of entree with side on the plate was not complimentary to the dish. Peppery mustard greens with the pepper ribeye is very one note. The frissee with the snapper was overly sour with both lemon juice and Sherry vinagrette. Since they were so dried out, both entrees needed a sauce. No vegetarian dishes, aside from side dishes and salads. Cocktails were good and nice riffs on local/timely ingredients. Rhubarb margarita was nicely balanced and flavorful. Overall, disappointed and not worth the price, other options in Ludlow have consistently given us better food experience. read more
