Started with the buffalo wings and they were crispy and delicious And complimentary rolls and butter So good and I want the recipe for that bread it was delicious For dinner I ordered the spinach cheddar baked haddock. It was delicious and buttery! Husband got the prime rib. He loved that it was served with a thicker gravy rather than au jus that most places do. Medium rare and came out at the perfect temp. Dinner also comes with a side salad. You won't leave this place hungry! We are definitely coming back. They were busy but that's the be expected on a Friday night. DJ's restaurant and bar was one of the few things open on a Sunday night 8pm in this cute little town of Ludlow. So we were happy to find a place to eat. The selection of entrée items is absolutely the most I've ever seen in a restaurant, it made it hard to decide. I asked the waitress and she said the chicken Cordon Bleu was one of the top items so that's what I picked. It was basic stuffed ham n cheese in the chicken breast, it wasn't breaded, which I liked. It was smothered in a kind of a gravy or white sauce, not quite sure what sauce it was. Hot fresh baked rolls, a basic chopped iceberg lettuce house salad and baked potato included. Also ordered was the chicken tender dinner, very plentiful, enough for 3 people I'd say. Sadly the dipping honey mustard was so bad, like salad dressing with vinegar flavor, not good! I had a glass of Merlot, I'm not sure I've seen an eight dollar glass of wine on a menu in the last decade, so that was pleasant. In general, the server was very efficient, the host not so friendly, and the place was spacious but has very dated decor, which some may consider part of its charm. Unfortunately we're sitting by some very noisy people, taking phone calls and playing sports out loud on their phones acting like they owned the place, kind of ruined atmosphere. We were in the area and decided to try this restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was immediately choatic from when you first entered. There were people everywhere and no order to anything that was going on. It was a busy night, and we didn't have a reservation. We expected a wait, and we had one. However, many parties around us had reservations and still had to wait as well. The atmosphere was also very dated and looked like it could use a vacuum. After a while, we were finally seated. The waitress was nice. The food took a while to arrive at our table. However, when it did arrive, it was tastier than I was expecting and very hot. read more

Greetings Richard. Let me begin by saying that for years I have been a loyal, and satisfied customer. But to say superior service?? That might have been during the salad bar days, aka pre COVID but certainly not now. Let me elaborate. We were sat near a party of 14+, whose lone server happened to be our server as well as other couples in our section. We were given water, rolls and butter... we sat there and sat. Then we sat for a little bit more. The butter and warm rolls were great. What is very unfortunate is that I couldn't even give our server an order for the bar. I'll admit that she was so busy with the large party and other tasks throughout her section, such as taking pics of the large group. Really! About 35 minutes later I threw down a bill for the rolls and water. We were noticed as we stood and walked towards the exit. We were stopped at the with the promise that the waitress would tend to us with urgency. I wanted to go but my better half wanted to stay. Anyway, almost an hour later from the time we crossed your threshold, we got our meals. And then we were asked if we would like dessert...no thanks. We took so much of our dinner home with us since we filled up on water, rolls and butter. To summarize the experience, the food was tasty, presentation lovely so kudos to the hidden and often underappreciated kitchen staff. To be ignored due to inadequate staffing, training or something else that is out of the customer's control is unsatisfactory. I don't forsee us returning to your restaurant. So some of the negative comments are fair, such as "chaos" at the front of the house, confusion handing us off to a waitress/another hostess, but to be fair the food was excellent (my son and I had Sirloin Butt steak done to our individual orders request), salad (nice pre dinner salad) and the rolls as others have stated were excellent. The ambiance was nice with large booths and roomy tables, darker inside but the stamped ceilings and pics on the wall were a nice touch. Our service was really good as well. Our dinner got off to a good start as we were seated immediately and served drinks quickly, but we waited an hour for our food, which was mediocre. We also didn't get checked on often during that hour wait. We were thanked for our patience and told they only had two cooks and over 150 people in the restaurant. It's not easy to please every one in my family and this place hit the spot. After walking through the doors I thought it was just a bar. Then we were taken to another room to be seated and I was able to see how large the restaurant was. Our server brought bread and drinks right away. My fish entree was excellent, my daughter loved her spaghetti, and my son enjoyed his kids meal. The portions were on the larger side and we all had leftovers. When we stayed near Ludlow, there were limited dinner choices on some weekday evenings. I think this was partly due to a flood in the town back in July of 2023 (i.e., just 10 - 11 weeks prior to our visit). Though my impression was that winter is the 'high season' for the town, I'd think that it would really begin ramping up when the leaves change. On our first evening (a Monday) this was one of the only places that appeared open. DJ's is located in roughly the center of the ~ 3-block main business district. There are other plazas a few blocks further on, but they are not part of the continuous original main street (from what I could tell). You enter ate a front bar area and small dining room with a host stand just beyond. When we entered, they conveyed us further back and to the left into a much larger dining space. My impression was that the front area was more for 'the locals' while the larger room was for tourists. There were several large groups there. They had booths along both side walls and large tables in the center. The lighting was a bit dim, partly as it was late in the day and partly due to all the dark wood finishes. Our server was nice enough and checked back regularly. If you arrive hungry or have a convenient place to store leftovers, dinner here would be a good choice. In my case, I was really hoping for something lighter (or at least not to waste significant food). They were nice enought to negotiate a grilled chicken dinner salad for me, though I'd have preferred one without said chicken. They don't offer a lot of appetizers that you could turn into a light meal and they don't offer a salad section of the menu. Again, I was glad that they were accommodating. Come hungry. From observing a nearby group, they seemed to have an extensive beer selection (though I did not order any myself). The food itself was fine. It just wasn't what I was looking for at that point, but I didn't feel that I had other good choices. I did not leave hungry, at any rate. Depending on your circumstances, this could be a solid choice for a dinner in Ludlow. read more

I was traveling through, DJ's was one of 3 restaurants open within a 20 mile radios. I pulled over as I spotted the whole belly clams sign. Service was great, very nice staff. I had the fried clams, fries, with salad and local Vermont beer, Switchback Ale, which paired great. It's has fully stocked bar, great staff, lots of locals and visitors alike, good food. Our server, Jess, was terrific - super fast, friendly and attentive even though there was a party of 14 in our section. The specials are written on a white board that is hilariously toted from table to table. Thankfully, we got to order our entrees while they were working on appetizers. Hubby ordered a tasty Upper Pass IPA, I had the glass of Terrazas Los Andes Malbec, which was fruity and full, and not too acidic. A big basket of rolls was brought out. Jess had to warn us that they were really hot. Who doesn't love hot fresh rolls served with a bowl full of butter whipped into clouds??! Salads weren't unique, but they were crisp, cold, and fresh. I ordered the haddock with crabmeat stuffing. The haddock was delicious, but I was hoping for more crabmeat - there was some under the breadcrumb top, just not a lot. Pro tip: keep the whipped butter on the table for your baked potato. Hubby got the Black Angus prime rib because, according to Jess, they don't have it every day - only when the prime rib flag is out front. I think only Fridays and Saturdays. It was tender and cooked very nicely. Hubby wasn't disappointed. The best dish was the daughter's Crispy 1/2 Duck - the skin, indeed was crackling crispy. It was served with cherries in a wine reduction, which my daughter didn't need or want with her meal, but my husband and I helped ourselves - they were yummy. We came to VT for a weekend getaway for our friend's bday and we decided to get some dinner down the street into town and decided on DJs restaurant. We weren't greeted just were seated by the hostess that just stared at us until we mentioned we are a party of 4. Sat down and it took about 10 minutes for our waiter to come to us and greet us. We all got a meal that came with rolls, salad and a chosen side. We also ordered garlic parm wings. Let me just say the only reason that this place got the 2 stars because the rolls were delicious (which we asked for more but never got them.) I ordered the special, chicken Marsala, then my husband ordered stuffed shells and meatballs, our friends ordered the shrimp with rice and the other chicken tenders and fries. The shrimp were overcooked, our friend almost vomited because the shrimp tasted like the hazy water that they were boiled in. Rice tasted like minute rice. The chicken Marsala was overly sweet for some reason and was fried? I thought that it was suppose to be grilled. Friend with chicken fingers and fries thought they were good but who can mess that up? Service from our waiter was ok, he didn't really apologize for the gross shrimps but he took it off the bill and we just replaced it with wings. All in all, I would suggest other places around the area before going to DJs. read more

I was not expecting this to be a good place but was pleasantly surprised. Nothing was mind-blowing but everything was made really well and with actual effort. Perhaps because this place has been around for 45 years, according to our server. We ordered the Thai wings, stuffed pasta shells with meatballs and the stuffed haddock with rice pilaf. First, the wings were really unique. They were fried perfectly and had a good amount of "Thai sauce" but they were served with hot mustard, which I found was extremely strange, yet worked somehow. The meatballs for the pasta dish tasted homemade, as did the red sauce and the haddock was stuffed with a great amount of crab and spinach. This place definitely has an old-fashioned feel to it, but in a good way. The bread will come out warm and straight from the oven with 4 lbs of butter in a soup dish and the salad will come out right when you sit down but everything is fresh. If you're in town, make sure you swing by. read more

Came to Ludlow VT for a snowboard getaway. Decided to try this place since there aren't too many options, glad I did. There were 3 of us, we had the chicken parm, rack of lamb & shrimp scamp with Alfredo pasta. Shrimp was cooked so well I was very surprised. They also bring a basket of bread & butter if you're into that. Everything was in huge portions, chicken parm & shrimp scampi was definitely shareable. I'd definitely come back here for the scampi. The reason for my 4 stars is that I ordered a basket of fries for my toddler & they came back looking very burnt/over fried. I knew she wouldn't eat it so I asked if they could be remade.. the waiter came back in less the 2 min with what it seemed to be the same basket of fries bcuz they weren't even hot.. but still were burnt/over fried. We just left the fries untouched. Kinda disappointed about that part. (We still payed for the fries) read more

Shockingly poor service. This is the story of a place who gets enough business to not give a rip what you think, or feel, or write about them. Waited patiently for hours because the menu looked good and the locals recommended it. NBD, maybe it's that good. We can wait. Grabbed a drink at the bar and watched the crowds flow in and out. I assume it's an owner doing hostess duties, because I can't imagine an employee acting so dismissive of folks coming in to eat at their establishment. Group after group came in looking for a table. If you had a reservation, I think it was bearable. If not, prepare to be treated like an annoying child. We actually had a reservation because we received the "you've got to be kidding me" treatment the night prior, but we were hoping it was just an off night. Not so much. Same story, with everyone who walked through the door. My wife tried to order an app from the bar, (I had ordered the drinks and we posted up behind a column) but she was met with "who are you? I don't even know you" (rolled eyes, exasperated sigh, etc) from the bartender. I assume it's a family operation where everyone is overworked, over-empowered, underpaid, and harried by the average evening rush, but maybe it's just absentee management. BL, almost everyone up front is comically miserable to interact with. If you don't have a reservation, or you're out of patience for dealing with a staff that considers you a huge pain in the butt, I highly recommend you seek food elsewhere. Our story ended with us walking out after being seated because they just ran out of the one dish they famously promote with a huge banner out front, their prime rib. I wish I could give some feedback to the food but we never got that far.... So we went to Killarney's and had a great meal in a much nicer atmosphere. read more

DJ's is one of my favorite spots in town for a hearty meal and a good cocktail. Admittedly you won't find a ton of "healthy" options here, but you will get a big, delicious American meal at a fair price. I'm a big fan of the blackened salmon, the cordon bleu, chicken teriyaki, and the shrimp dishes. Good steaks too. Bartender makes a great Manhattan. They had a salad bar pre-Covid which was one of the best parts, but sadly that doesn't seem to be coming back. Nevertheless, very glad to have found this place and regularly visit! read more

The food was below average overall. Pasta sauce was not good and it was very thick, more like a pizza sauce. Chicken parmesan came with small rotelli style pasta (never seen that before) instead of the usual spaghetti or linguini. Filet Mignon was on the tough side. Chicken dish was dry, even though it was drenched in barbecue sauce. Dinner rolls were not good at all. Waited a little over an hour for our food. Thought server was a little deceiving with ordering as well. All dishes that we ordered came with a salad. However, server offered one person in our party, "soup or salad" so he ordered a soup (no salad). Seemed like the option was one or the other? When check came, the soup was an extra price added to the bill. Also, a tip for the server, please try not to handle all of our drinking glasses by the top section of the glass. We got mixed reviews from others who had tried this place, and wanted to see for ourselves. It was a really nice experience! Our server was friendly and attentive. We ordered the mushroom caps appetizer, and although very rich, they were delicious! This place has some large serving sizes! We got the scallops au gratin which were also super rich but tasty. The sirloin tips were cooked accurately, and the wine list is decent. Definetly has a "local comfort food" feel in both the ambiance and the food. Most of the space was more of a bar experience, and their back space was closed due to COVID, but if you're looking for rich and delicious comfort foods, check this place out! read more

Has a nice selection of specials each night but my classic favorites are their St. Louis spareribs and their scallops dishes. Staff is friendly and service is always good. Can get crowded on weekends during ski season but this is to be expected. Love it every time. read more
