This restaurant is definitely going downhill. We had the fried Haddock dinner. The fish itself was good, albeit not a huge portion for the price. What came with that was limp, unseasoned fries, and mixed vegetables that must have come from an industrial can circa 1957. Even the lemon slices that came with the fish were desiccated. I got a side salad for extra charge which included limp, wilted lettuce, mealy tomatoes, and not so amazing cucumbers. Please don't waste your money - go somewhere else instead. read more

The Riverside is a staple, for me, when visiting Springfield. Nice, "small town", diner feel. My mother and I were just back in town for the Stellafane Convention and we ate here 4 times in three days. Try the blueberry pancakes (short stack is pictured here). Soup no matter what flavor taste like dirty dishwater. When I asked the owner, why this is, she says I cater to mostly the elderly people. And my reply was they like flavored too Recently went there with a friend and she got French onion soup. There was more croutons and soup in the crock and she had to ask for more broth. The French onion soup was great. My husband's steak was not seasoned or cooked right over cooked. The coleslaw looked disgusting and old. We didn't bother trying it. The table was sticky, not clean. I went to use the ketchup. It had crusted ketchup all over the top. You couldn't open the ketchup. The spoons were not clean I'll never goback again. read more

Was a very cute place, food was okay. Waited at least 45min after ordering. Food was okay. Waitress was very nice . Which we found out later she was the owner. Would have given a 4 if food was better. I will go again to try something different, maybe it'll be better. This was my first time going and some time it's just the dish. Keep your fingers crossed. So, stopped here for lunch with my mom and boyfriend (we're visiting from CA)... unfortunately I can't review the food or service because we received neither. ... the place was empty, with 1 table of elderly men in the back corner. We were told to sit anywhere, and given menus, but no one acknowledged us after that. We sat at the table for 15 min before walking out. Formerly Cooper's Family Restaurant, Riverside Restaurant is a full service casual family restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which is located in a small strip on Route 106, just north of the Route 11 intersection. Like its predecessor, the dining room has booths, tables, and counter seating, not fancy. The lunch & dinner menu offerings consist of sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, pasta dinners, steaks, chicken, seafood, comfort dishes (liver & onions, meatloaf, ham steak, hot turkey sandwich), salads, soup & salad bar, fried appetizers, and desserts. The prices here seem reasonable, most sandwiches & platters under $10 and most dinners $9.95-$16.95. They also offer daily specials too. I stopped here for dinner recently. I was seated in a booth next to the soup & salad bar. I quickly decided to order the Shrimp Scampi ($12.95), which included the salad bar. The salad bar was decent and basic which had over 20 items including greens, garnishes, dressings, cold salads (pasta salad, potato salad), fresh fruit plus one hot soup and bread (slice on your own). The hot soup was a cream tomato soup with pasta shells, which was very good. The dinner entree was served in about 10 minutes. This good sized pasta dish consisted of 6 tender shrimp (cleaned with tails on) tossed with soft spaghetti, garlic, oil, tomato in a white wine sauce, topped with parsley sprinkles. The baked garlic bread was very buttery. The service here was prompt and I had half of my dinner boxed to go, passing on the offer for dessert. Very helpful server who gave honest answers to our questions. Had the fried haddock dinner which made it to our table in less than 10 minutes. The fish was lightly coated which I really enjoyed. They used to be good, but now they food is bland at best. Last time the service was very slow, although the waiter was very nice and friendly. Unfortunately they food was not worth the wait and my French onion soup was burnt and very black, it was so disgusting. I ended up eating from the salad bar, and their salad bar is basic at best. Ordered Turkey dinner. The stuffing was dry. The Turkey had no flavor. The potatoes needed salt. There was all little pieces of dark meat chopped underneath the generous portion of white meat but unfortunately there was a lot of fat. My daughter got the chicken and broccoli alfredo. Unfortunately, that dinner too was less than desirable. The sauce was a chalky cheese sauce. The chicken tasted like already prepared Perdue strips and the broccoli was frozen and reheated in the microwave. Sorry for the bad review. read more

Service was extremely slow. There were 3 people working and only one person taking orders for all the tables. Communication was definitely lacking one person got us drinks, different person took order, different person ran our food, then my food I was told was given to another table by accident by the person who ran food , but then I saw him bussing... the one taking orders clearly couldn't do it all and seemed overwhelmed. She needs to let the other workers take tables and see it through the whole dining experience. She was giving out checks at the end also. I wonder who gets the tips?? read more

Looking forward to an early breakfast between doctor's appointments, we arrived a little before 8 am in early April. There were only a few other diners, but it was early. So early that the restaurant wasn't yet warmed up. I sat with my coat on and we waited a couple of minutes for the waitress to come over with menus. Then waited for her to come back with coffee. I assumed she was still doing opening tasks, as it was not busy. We placed our order and I specified how I wanted the eggs with my breakfast cooked. When our breakfast arrived, my eggs were not cooked as I asked. Because we had another appointment and no time to wait, my boyfriend kindly offered me his breakfast and we switched plates. The home fries on both of our plates were cold, which was a head scratcher to me, a former waitress. How hard is it to keep cubed potatoes warm in a commercial kitchen? I saw the ticket and the waitress took my order correctly. Overall, a disappointing experience: I couldn't eat the breakfast I ordered, and neither could my boyfriend, who chose to eat my cheesy-bacony breakfast sandwich rather than his cholesterol-friendly omelette in order to keep us on time for our appointment. read more

Aha, This place is now the royal diner, run by it seems a family of Peters, they got the job by being available not by being good, the wait staff is incompetent, the food is so-so, the lower review is spot on, the name changed. Years ago, in a different location, the riverside served me fried eggs that were cooked in a microwave, fast forward, they moved, now I stop now and then for oatmeal, well, the oatmeal is oatmeal, the person waiting on the other hand is the problem, I'm guessing the family that owns the restaurant works there, they look alike, one 250ish lb male and several females, lookalikes. They have others that serve, and all are congenial, the family on the other hand, waiting 20 minutes for a cup of coffee, waiting another 20 minutes for a refill, ordering a simple meal (oatmeal) and having problems, ( it overflows the bowl, how do you add liquid?,, over billed, but the real problem is the inadequacy of the server to be polite, civil, use common sense??), to whom do you complain when a gorilla is being rude to you? read more

Both the staff and the food here were a wonderful surprise. I'm not usually a fan of traditional American fare but we with with kids and seniors so it fit our needs. This restaurant was recommended by our hotel desk clerk. The service was great with extra attention paid to our cane-using senior - the waitress brought his soup over from the salad bar and he never had to get up from the table. Humorous moment when my husband asked to see the beer menu and the waitress brought over an entire whiteboard off the wall. I had a standard chicken breast/honey mustard salad but the chicken was not standard - grilled and very nicely spiced. The Mac n cheese was so good that my kraft-loving kids said it was too cheesy and I loved it (I'm not a huge Mac n cheese fan, either). Fries tasted both like real potatoes and fries. Loved this place. I had an excellent cheese burger with sweet potato fries, my sister had a fishwich, which was a huge piece of haddock on a buttered bun, and onion rings. Everything was fresh, made from scratch, and served promptly. Decor and atmosphere is "small town family restaurant" which I was what I was looking for. I had not been here in over a year because the last time I was in the service and food was horrible, nothing has changed. The fresh cut fries were undercooked, the soda had no carbonation, and my burger was rare rather than medium. It seems it will be another year or more before I go back again. I have stopped at the Riverside several times and if they are not real busy and if the owner is there, you will have very good service and a good meal for a fair price. If you like seafood, the fish and shell fish there are usually very good and fresh. Salad bar is also good. Breakfast is also above average. Will return when I am in the area again. read more

We love the ,prompt service and good food for a good price and plenty of it, quiet atmosphere. I have brought my elderly Mother and Company here several times and have never had any problems. The wait staff is very courteous. The selection on the menu is broad enough for everybody and the specials are specials.This diner also seems to cater to and care for the elder population which is nice for a change as well. It is calm and quiet inside and an old time atmosphere. Although we have eaten only dinners here,i would be willing to bet their other meals are just as awesome. read more

The innkeeper warned us against the picturesque diner elsewhere in Springfield in favor of this place, which is in a humble commercial plaza. My husband foolishly ordered a full stack. I got a short stack for $2.25 and couldn't finish. I like 'em lofty. Then I also ordered an egg, over easy, not much to be said about that but it was all I'd hoped and dreamed. My sister had the veggie omelette and when she asked if it was a veggie mix (because green pepper is nasty) she was assured that no, your veggies arrive intact and distinct. Two people couldn't finish it and three people raved over the home fries (I will trust them as I did not partake). Coffee to get you facing forward and paying attention. Spacious, so no wait. Attentive, warm, friendly service. I predict they are also a good place for things like soup and pie. read more
