My husband and I stayed at the Driskill Hotel for our 38th anniversary. It is such a lovely hotel. Every member of the staff was friendly and helpful. We spent the evening watching live music at Guero's and when we returned to our room we discovered a bottle of Proseco and a sweet card. One star bc zero isn't an option. Almost 1/2 hour to drop off car, with one car waiting g in front of me this morning. More than 1/2 hour to get my car back with nobody waiting ahead of us. When I asked the front desk, they told me that it's a third party and they have no control over it. Losing our dinner reservation. No accountability. Terrible service. I suggest you dont park here. Wrote review while I waited. Btw, bell captain went to car after 30 mins. Valet told me delay was bc of traffic. They never went to get it. I stayed at The Driskill on 6/13/10. The hotel was everything I imagined it to be--old, historical and elegant. At check-in I asked to be upgraded from the Curio Room to a full size room and was given the upgrade at no charge. The room was fairly small in size, but was very nicely updated with warm colors and great bed linens. The Driskill was the perfect place for me to stay because I was only in Austin for 24 hours. Within that amount of time, I was able to see the Capitol, the Visitors Center, the UT campus, the shops on The Drag (Guadalupe Street) and all the bars and restaurants between 2nd and 6th street. I parked once and had a great time walking around---even though it was a typical June day in Austin at 98 degrees! The Driskill was a fantastic place to stay--great location to everything, quiet and very relaxing! A perfect weekend get-a-way spot for anyone! read more

I stayed at the Driskill earlier this month for a friends wedding. The wedding was not at the hotel but it was recommended and all the shuttles/after parties were there. While the hotel is beautiful and the location can't be beat, we had a issue with the service. When we checked out Sunday morning, we checked our bags at the front desk and went out to spend the day around Austin. We came back to pick the bags up to go to the airport and neither the front desk nor the valets could find our bags! They were eventually located (they had been taken up to a room), and we made it to the airport just in time to board our flight home. However, this whole fiasco caused a great trip to end in unnecessary rush and stress. I have already spoke to 2 managers about this incident and both apologized profusely, but the incident happened nonetheless. read more

Honestly, I only stayed here because of the Guy Clark song "Ramblin' Jack and Mahan," which references "stayin' up all night at the Driskill Hotel." I did enough research to learn the history of the place and that it was a nicer hotel. I looked forward to staying there, but I really didn't have any expectations. The Driskill compares favorably to all hotels in this class where I have ever stayed. It is reminiscent of the Brown in Lousiville and the Skirvin in Oklahoma City to me - grand dame type hotels that are just fun, but something about the Driskill just sets it apart from the others. The rooms were nice and had character. Hyatt recently bought this property and they seem committed to honoring its legacy. The staff was better than average. I am giving this four stars because it is just a cool place to stay. I contemplated five stars. The only hotels I have ever given five stars are the St. Regis in Manhattan, the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville, and The Museum 21C Hotel in Louisville. I loved the Driskill, but it falls short of these three, for sure - thus, four stars it is. The bar/restaurant are awesome! The ambiance is really five stars. The food was really good, too. The steak tartare was great, and the house cocktails are much better than the average. They did overcook my steak - twice! - but the manager handled it very well. He took the steak off the bill (obviously) and gave us $40 vouchers for breakfast. read more

Wonderful place to stay in Austin. But, I love that bar. Over 15 years of visiting twice a year, I'd hit that bar every night of my stay, and the same Irishman, Sean O'Byrne, would greet me with a smile, a joke, a Corona and a Don Julio. True, professional bartenders are a dying breed, and Sean was one of the greats. Think: Danny of the late Guido's in Malibu. Sean remembered everybody's order and everybody's name and shared his time generously around that storied watering hole, whether you were a regular or a twice-year-guy. I hope to share a quiet glass of beer with my son one night at the Driskill Bar. read more

I made my reservation for The Driskill because this is where my PILMMA Mastermind meeting was being held. I did not know before going the rich history of The Driskill. The parking was challenging. We circled the block twice trying to find the parking garage only to learn that you basically just need to valet the car ($45 per day). The lobby of this hotel does NOT disappoint! It is just stunning! The staff were quick to assist and got me settled into my room ahead of schedule. Getting to the rooms is a bit confusing (two different elevators and a mezzanine to walk across between them), but not so much that I got lost. The room is smaller than other places I've stayed, but tastefully decorated and clean. My ceiling light flickered both nights of my stay to the point I just decided to leave it off. However, the nightstand lights worked perfectly fine without flinching. Each night the hotel staff left a bowl of ear plugs on a table just outside of the elevator. I found these very useful. The service for our meeting - from set up to food- was all top notch! Fantastic meal options! read more

My husband and I stayed in an upgraded room with a view of 6th street and a balcony. It was a celebratory stay for our wedding anniversary. We rarely treat ourselves to something so extravagant but felt like a bit of a splurge after 22 years of wedded bliss. I packed my favorite dress and wore it for dinner that night. After our stay, upon arrival back home, I realized my dress was not in my overnight bag. I emptied every bag we had (which was only three). I realized I had left it in the hotel room. The same day of our checkout, I called the hotel and was transferred to the lost and found department where I had to leave a voicemail. I didn't hear back the next day (Sunday) so called first thing Monday 8am. I spoke with a gentleman in lost and found and he said he would go back to the room to look for my dress. He called me back 20 minutes later and said the room had not been cleaned yet and he didn't see my dress. I couldn't believe it! So, he said he would double check in the areas I mentioned it may be. He looked again and called me back. Still did not see the dress. We confirmed that he was in the correct room. He said to call back in a week or so as it may "turn up". I called three days later. The room had been cleaned at that point and no one turned in my dress to lost and found. My assumption is that someone had entered our room upon checkout to look for any "left behind" items and helped themselves to my dress. At such a high priced "quality" establishment, I would have liked to believe that this type of activity wouldn't happen. I saddened by this and will tell everyone I have the opportunity to mention it to. read more

I read tons of reviews before I booked my stay at the Driskill and I was very close to changing my mind based on some bad reviews. Thank God I gave this a chance. My wife and I stayed there for a 'get-away' weekend and it could not have been better. When we arrived the computers at the front desk were down and I thought 'here we go, just like the reviews' but the staff was gracious and quickly checked us in without a hassle. My biggest fear, again, based on other reviews, was the room. I breathed a sigh of relief when I opened the door. Spacious, gorgeously decorated, and classic. Reminded me of a room I stayed in at the Excelsior in Rome. The room was clean and comfortable. The only negative on the room was the temperature and considering Austin had its' coldest weekend in 15 years, I was not surprised. The temperature was comfortable but required the Heater to run almost constantly. Breakfast the next morning at 1886 Cafe was superb. The pancakes were light and perfect. One word of warning - The prices at the restaurant and bar are marked up more than most similar venues. The bar is a great place to hang but the prices make it a little less enjoyable. read more

The driskill has come a long way. It's always been a beautiful hotel and landmark in Austin....but it suffered the times I stayed there on the service access. There were some distinct challenges there and led my wife and I to try other hotels and options. But alas, we tried it again after a long hiatus we tried again a little over a week ago. The service has improved dramatically. We were met in the bar seconds after sitting down with a very helpful and waitress who gave recommendations and got our drinks quickly and with a smile. In the past we might have waited quite a while for anyone to even acknowledge us. The hotel itself also improved it's service. Maid service was prompt, well done, and efficient. Check in and checkout was far more friendly in the past and we felt "welcome" instead of well, not exactly welcome in the past. Fantastic improvement. I smile every time I walk into this historic hotel, I find it posh, relaxing, and the lobby is gorgeous. I love the comfortable, old school Texas charm, and the ghosts don't bother me at all. Just stayed a few days ago while in Austin for work and enjoyed it. We were on the famed fifth floor next to one of the more notorious rooms in a petite queen. That section of the hotel is newly renovated and it was small but very clean and nice The water was slow to drain in the shower as another reviewer noted but after I ran the shower for a few minutes the tub started draining just fine. The blackout curtains were a treat since my bedroom at home has eastern exposure and a huge picture window so I loved getting to sleep in without a pillow on my head. The staff was courteous and efficient. Great location, we could walk to and from dinner which was fantastic as the weather was warm and mild. I was excited about staying at this hotel because of the pictures on the internet. I was disappointed when I arrived. The lobby is incredible looking but the rooms are small and average. There are homeless people all around the hotel. You can not walk two blocks without a few people asking you for a dollar. Stayed at the Driskill for 4th of July weekend. The hotel is beautifully restored and the lobby is absolutely stunning. The check-in process was fast and efficient and the front desk staff are friendly and professional. Our room was beautiful and clean. The decor was super cute, especially the night stands! However, that bathroom is another story. Seriously it was the tiniest bathroom I have ever been in. There was no vanity so I had to put my makeup in the sink to apply it. The sink itself looked like something that belonged in a Barbie dollhouse. I was very dissatisfied with the bathroom situation. Also beware that if you remove items from the in-room fridge you will be charged whether you actually used them or not. Otherwise the hotel was in a great location and within walking distance of bars, restaurants etc. I would only stay here again if I could get a room with an adult-sized bathroom. read more

I love the Driskill. I always stop in and cool off here before roaming town. The lobby staff is truly outstanding. They are so helpful, gracious, and competent. I wish I could stay here for a few weeks. It's a great place to meet friends, have a drink, or just relax. The live music acts are usually very good also. Many thanks to the concierge Christie Johnson who helped me recently just before she had to leave. She gave me information I need at the last minute. The Driskill is an amazing historic hotel and I was really lucky that I got to stay here on my very first trip to Austin. The hotel has an interesting history of being bought and sold numerous times over the last 150 years, and does a wonderful job of entwining together old world charm and contemporary comforts. The staff is very amiable and I had a positive experience checking in and out. Everyone in Austin is so nice, so I'm not sure if it was good training or just that hospitable Southern charm. I had a King sized bed all to myself and it was a superbly comfortable bed! I love having tons of pillows but found that they were a bit too soft for my taste. The TV and the shower were the two problem areas in my hotel room. It was so difficult to change the channels on my TV and it made it discouraging to watch because my remote sucked. I talked to my compatriots and it was a common problem across the board. The bathroom was very nice and well stocked, but the glass door for the shower only covered one side of the tub. WTF! Each night I'd take a shower and then soak in the tub, only to be driven out by the draft which crept in because there was only half of a door. I don't know what genius decided to do this, but it was not someone who enjoyed being warm. Yes, its totally haunted. And yes, the paintings will look at you and it can be a bit creepy. But I figure, it's only ghosts and they're dead so what can they really do to you? They're just bored and starving for attention. Just turn on the TV and let them watch the 'Law & Order SUV' with you. Everyone, dead or alive, enjoys a good TV drama! read more

Amber, aged 54 "Finally! I got my mimosa, now can I get my che-" Amber, dies at 102 having never paid for that mimosa because she died and her cold, boney hand still clutches the champagne flute longingly at her life unlived, and morning held up. I will say this about the Driskill though, GORRRRGGEEEOUS place, the upstairs bar is also very-very nice and contains, get this, Danielle Steele novels and other such trash but leather bound and inconspicuous on the shelves, look for yourself. Also - the Irish bartender is an amazing man and a fantastic storyteller. I went once to have dinner with the ambassador of Sweden (it was a massive dinner) and the catering seemed super-alright. They made me feel fancy. Bottom line? Go for the bar, but if you hit the 1886 around brunch, oh boy, look out because this review was based on multiple experiences... read more

The Driskill is a classic. So many things to love about it. I am afraid there are also a few things that could be improved upon. The service is terrific... from the fast and friendly valet to the front desk service associates checking you in. The Lobby area is beautiful and really takes you back. This is old school luxury. Our room, which was located in the original building, was a bit worn and very dark. Oddly, it seemed to be missing a piece or two of furniture... and the bathroom was narrow and smallish. The hallways looked like they could use a bit of a "refresh" and the elevators were slow. There is so much potential here... I would return, but think I the Driskill needs a little TLC. read more

Beautiful hotel! Everything here is unique and feels and looks so nice. Staff is great, they go out of their way to make you feel welcomed. Rooms are large- and beds are super comfy. Love the atmosphere- nothing like what you normally get in a retail chain- so if you want something new, different, exciting- i'd definitely recommend! I was all set to give this place 5 stars, but then the darn steam room didn't work. Geez, they don't have a pool or a sauna... they don't have a masseuse on staff (although they do have massage rooms in which they can supply a massage if you want one) and the workout facilities are pretty sparse. So you'd hope that the ONE feature they have, the steam room, would work! But no. 4 hours before our reservation to eat at the Driskill restaurant downstairs and they could not give me a massage. Ok. short notice. Forgivable. But then I go to the "steam room"... and well, first, it's OFF. which sucks because now I have to turn it on and that will take 20 minutes to heat up. so I turn it on and do a few sets in the workout room. I go back 15 minutes later to check on it and... no... not working. Doesn't work. Nice! Well, it's only, ya know, 350/night or something. The "best place to stay" in Austin. The oldest hotel west of the Mississippi. Completed in 1886. They have their own WIKIPEDIA entry for chrissake! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driskill_Hotel It's listed in the U.S. Government's National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). So, ya know, no reason that I'd assume that the steam room would be working. Anyway, whatever. Steam room experience blew. Too bad. on the other hand: Rooms were excellent. I want to move in. Amenities were swanky! Molton Brown brand from London. Never used them before but now I'm gonna buy some. Lobby was spectacular with the marble floors, the pillars, the wood-work in the walls and ceilings. Take pictures. I'll try to upload some of mine. Multiple weddings at the Driskill over the weekend. The restaurant is the consensus best restaurant in Austin. The concierge is great. Very, very helpful guy and knowledgeable. He made all our reservations for us and gave us a good run-down on the different places around the city. But of all the stellar features.... the best, best feature? Location. You do not need a car in Austin at all but definitely not if you stay at the Driskill. The San Jose is the other spot I thought of staying which would have been a nice experience (I looked at it while I was there) but The San Jose is about 1.5 miles from the center of town which would have made cabbing it on a regular basis a must. However, the Driskill IS the center of town. So you can make a very, very, very short walk to the live-music section of town, or the college-bar section, or the ritzier, more wine and dance club section. You can even walk to the University if you want from there (it's about a mile from the Driskill). All in all, if you want the location and the historical hotel ambience and the ghost stories and the incredible design and features, The Driskill. If you're looking for a pool, spa.... Well, I'd probably suggest going to some other city altogether. read more

$200 for a room with no refrigerator. I have done that before but ....upon leaving I had brunch and then sat in lobby charging my phone for another hour prior to leaving. Very disappointed that I was approached by security asking if I was staying here. Despite having a cart with my luggage next to me. Stating they were asked to question me. We were upgraded to a suite, #528. Hotel is in need of MAJOR updating. This historic hotel has sadly not been well maintained. The elevators, rooms, etc. are all worn down, sad appearing and musty smelling. We waited 40 min to get our car from the valet after being told it would take 10 min. When our car was finally brought out, the valet attendant told us he had to call in a guy to drive the stick shift. That would have been a minor thing had we loved the hotel. Hyatt!!! My husband and I recently stayed at the Driskill to celebrate my birthday. The historic hotel has been very tastefully renovated while maintaining its splendor AND its charm. The valet service is always top-notch at The Driskill. I've been there a hundred times before for events, but this was my first time to stay. I don't ever even bother trying to find a place on the street, because their valet is always superb. The rooms are not massive because it is an historic hotel, but they are very well "dressed". The bedding was gorgeous, and I really wanted to take the oversized high-backed chair home with me. Believe it or not, every room has a ceiling fan! This is a huge deal to my husband. He travels often for work, and this is one of his biggest "complaints" about traveling. He was thrilled to find the fan. We spent some time in the bar watching a football game, and the people-watching was as entertaining as the game. read more

I went to the Driskill as a guest with someone attending a conference. I wanted to make sure to leave a post about what a great experience I had at this hotel! From check in to check out, it was five star service. The beds, the hair dryers, the linens (even the bath mat was soft, and bath mats usually feel like sand paper). I used the fitness center, while tough to find, was GREAT! Including cool towels and a steam room. I was very impressed with the old lovely, lively bar at this hotel. The Driskill is a beautiful, historic hotel. We've been in the hotel many many times but had never stayed there. When we finally did decide to stay we figured what better way to experience it than in the Presidential Suite. The reservations person we talked to was competent and friendly, and even called back to confirm our dinner reservations and see if we needed anything else for our stay. She asked if there was a special occasion we were celebrating, and we let her know it was my husband's birthday. She mentioned it a couple times after that so it seemed like it was something they made note of. The staff at the check-in were polite and efficient but didn't seem to give the same welcome you get at other hotels of this caliber. Our suite was a little hard to find. It was on the mezzanine level, hidden in a corner - right next to some humming equipment room that frankly was a little creepy to walk by each time (the door was open). When we got to the suite there were dirty glasses sitting outside the door from the previous guests. The suite is truly gorgeous. There is a beautiful large sitting room (sofa, chairs, bar and dining area) leading out to a mezzanine level balcony on the corner of 6th St and Brazos. The bedroom are bathroom are separated from the sitting room by the large entryway. The bedroom has a queen bed and a chaise lounge along with tons of storage for clothes. The bathroom was very large and lovely. However the shower barely had any water pressure and it was nearly impossible to get hot water out of it or the bathroom sink. Lukewarm was the best you could get. I can understand poor water pressure in such an old building, but hot water shouldn't be that difficult to get. We left our room to go to dinner and put the "do not disturb" sign on the door. When we came back, someone had been in the room despite the sign. Also, they still didn't bother to pick up those dirty glasses outside the door. By this time the noise coming from 6th street was LOUD (on a Thursday night - I'd hate to hear a weekend night!). And it didn't help that the rickety old doors leading to the balcony barely shut. We fully anticipated noise (it's 6th street after all!) but not like this. After the initial reservation, there was never any acknowledgment of my husband's birthday. Usually when they ask like that there is something in the room like a couple of chocolate covered strawberries, or a cheese plate. I'm not sure why they asked if they don't do that sort of thing there! We ended up checking out that same night. It was just a less than stellar experience so we decided to just go home. The icing on the cake was while checking out, the clerk was just about to print our receipt when she had to answer the phone. Instead of putting that person on hold she took down a page of information from them, making us wait. Finally after *several* minutes she put them on hold to click "print" for our receipt. Bottom line: we won't stay again. It wasn't a bad experience, but it wasn't what we expected from a hotel like this. We really wanted to love it, but we've stayed in far better hotels downtown Austin. We'll still come back to the Driskill for dinner and drinks, but not stay in the hotel. read more

First this review will be of their grill not of the actual hotel. I've been here twice. Once my fraternity held their formal here. This was by far the best formal I ever had in my years I was Greek. Luckily I had convinced the social chair to hold it here for my graduating semester =). The food was a step above any other hotel food I've ever had. But what made this place even better is the hotel backdrop. The decor is something you'd see in a movie. It was the perfect backdrop for a formal where your date is all dolled up and wants to take pictures! The other time I came here was for my 22nd birthday. My ex girlfriend surprised me by taking me here. We had a 3? Course meal? Well it came with various dishes as the chef makes appetizers and they are brought out to the table randomly. Everything was amazing. The serving sizes are small but the presentation is something off of the food network. Maybe one day my fraternity will hold formal again here and I'll have to make an alumni appearance. read more

I love hotel bars, and this is one of the best. My gang regularly gets dressed up for "fancy drinks" at the Driskill, but since it's on 6th Street and a hotel bar, you see all types in here. I like to bring out-of-towners here too, because they get a good dose of the Texas style they want; leather and cowhide couches, cowboy paintings and sculpture, and that historic, grand old western lobby. We all need a little luxury every now and then, if you can't book a room, just pretend for an hour that you're an oil baron. read more

This place has a bunch of pro's and con's. Overall, I enjoyed the experience, but there are some simple things that they could do to make the experience better. It's really nice that they have free wireless and wired internet, but do they really need to charge $0.54 for each local phone call? I even had my cell phone with me but I (wrongly) figured I'd just use theirs. The other thing that quite frankly bothered me about this hotel is the parking. I understand that parking in downtown Austin is difficult and that they don't have a garage, but do they really need to feed you to the wolves? They offer a valet service that is outrageously overpriced, self street park, or self pay garage park. Why not work something out with the local garage for a little bit of a price break just to show that you are trying to take care of your guests. As for the rest of the hotel, it was quite nice. The location is great if you want to try to go out, though I should warn everyone to get a reservation for weekend nights for dinner. From 9pm to 10pm the hotel had the bakery put out some chocolate cake and chocolate covered strawberries. It was a very nice touch. The room was pleasantly decorated, though a little on the small side. I paid $149.99 (plus the 54 cents for the phone call) for the room and was pleased with what I got. I would have been quite unhappy had I paid the full $400.00 per night that was posted on the door. read more

Beautiful hotel- totally Austin. We wanted to have our wedding reception here, but the room for our size wedding (The Citadel) definitely wasn't up to par with the rest of the hotel. The staff are friendly (although the wedding coordinator was a bit snobby) and helpful. Even though it didn't work out for the reception itself, we'll probably still try to book some rooms for the wedding night.. ;) read more
