The Eastman is an absolutely lovely addition to the Rochester scene and quite frankly my favorite spot. While there is a hint of the old time speakeasy in finding the place (it's really not that tricky) walking down the stairs and into the beautiful bar is just absolutely lovely. It's dark, and low lit, and the ambience is chill with a hint of hush hush and just visually so appealing. This level detail isn't just left for the eyes, the drinks here are very well made. Every single one I've had the pleasure of trying has been well balanced, flavorful, and yet somehow appropriately spirit forward. And the barstaff who puts these delectable mixtures together are absolutely well versed, knowledgable, and willing to adjust any of their drinks to your own personal tastes. Of course, the prices run a little higher, but I found them to be typical of what we see, but in this case I think the experience is well worth the cost. You're getting impeccable aesthetics, fantastic service, and wonderful drinks and it's so hard to find places that meet all three anymore. The Eastman is a cool, basement level speakeasy. The door is located in the back, but otherwise not hard to find. This cocktail bar is small, low ceiling with low lighting, and simple decor. Their menu is a small book of interesting, and priced as such, cocktails. Each has a fun name. They do offer a small list of beer and wine, and obviously you can order a standard drink as well. They have a few snack offerings, but there is no full menu. A friend and I went at the right time, the late end of happy hour on a Friday, but before any crowd. We did not have a reservation, but they were quiet when we arrived and we were seated immediately. They do have a 90 minute table limit for busy nights. The service was fantastic all around. We both enjoyed our drinks and the atmosphere. This may be the best place in Rochester for a drink. read more

I found out about this place on Instagram and we stopped by last week when we were out to dinner to check it out, and were able to visit for a drink this weekend. I love the little speak easy bars popping up all over the city, it is a fun way to use the space. During the day, this is a hallway that leads to a barber shop, then turns into a bar during the evening. I loved the dark aesthetic, with the black lace draped tiny lamps at each table and the slightly spooky Halloween vibe. The people working here were incredibly nice and helpful and very eager to serve drinks and make this a fun evening. We came as a pre-dinner cocktail, since I am trying to eat around the city and visit as many establishments as I can. I liked their very themed menu, and their additional Halloween drinks. They had a lot of very creative types of infused liquors to try, ranging from candy infused to meat infused alcohols. But we went for the very standard espresso martini (since we are trying them at as many places as possible) and a very tropical martini. The espresso one was good, not quite at the top of my list, but I am a very big fan of Dessert Oasis, which is right above this bar and I am told shares owners. The tropical one, called For My Fans, was excellent. I would get that one again. This seems like a fun place to go, especially with friends, for quick a drink and to try new flavors. read more

The bartenders were nice and the drinks were well made. Very small basement bar with limited seating and a speakeasy vibe. Very dark for that speakeasy vibe so can be difficult to read their limited specialty drink menu. No real food offerings but that's not what this place is about. It's about weird or rather eclectic mixed cocktails for $18 a pop. They do offer a charcuterie board, cheese board and some limited foodstuffs. If you won't get a sandwich or a meal here. This is a cocktail bar. I tried the sleepy hollow which is a modified old fashioned with a "butter washed" bourbon and a torched marshmallow on a stick just sitting on the rim. Wasn't sure what to do with the mallow. Ended up dipping and eating it. The drink however I sent back. It was sooo sweet; tasted like syrup. They did replace it with a standard old fashioned which was fine. They do give you your bill in a book. Like an actual book to read, which is a "novel" idea. (Sorry couldn't help myself). Bartenders are engaging and aim to please as well. The worst parts; limited seating, overly dark, expensive, too many cocktail bars in the area that are pretty much the same, and no real personality that sets it apart from the others in this town. read more

The Eastman is a fantastic addition to the already bustling downtown Rochester area. We came to specifically check out this new Speakeasy with plans to move on to Park 600. Well we were having so much fun that we never left! This speakeasy is located under the coffee shop. We were a bit confused because we thought the entrance was in the coffee shop. But it isn't. It's located on the street east of main street. When you arrive, you are greeted and they will seat you. We got there around 6:30 and it was already packed. Expect about a 30 min wait for a seat. Even at the bar. They do not serve food so, don't come hungry. They have a ton of very unique cocktails but are happy to make whatever you request. The mixologists were fantastic! They love their jobs and you could tell they were having fun. Also very informative and knowledgeable! The drinks were pricey. They ranged around $15-20 each. They did have complimentary popcorn and we ordered a charcuterie board. It was small but it did the trick for us. Just a note: they do not have WiFi and you'll be lucky if you get cellular service down there. This was a choice they made to keep people off their phones and in the moment. If you're addicted to your phone, this may be tough for you! We had an amazing time!! I can't wait to go back! read more

We were tipped off to this new bar opening at Lagniappe. The entrance is located off the alley east of main and south of fourth. Waiting room was full of people, but there was a server grabbing drinks. When you enter, look around. This is a true speakeasy. Tin ceilings, wood details, hidden doors, beautiful music. What a fantastic addition to downtown Rochester! Amer, the owner, was graciously floating about on opening. He is humble and kind to say the least. Looking forward to supporting his newest venture. Jenna, our server, was a friendly spit fire. She was busy as hell, but showed up with a smile and a sense of humor. Attentive with water, drink suggestions too. Drink menu was large and a little hard to navigate based on their headings. Would love to see it based on spirit, or classics... we all found good choices. I ordered But Did You Die. I am only giving this 3 stars because of the prices. The prices are typical for Rochester and Detroit which I can't stand paying $18 per drink. Same for the very very small charcuterie tray. We got there at 5pm on a Wednesday and got a table. By 6 it was standing room only. It opens at 5 so you can't get there any earlier. The drinks were fine. It's hard to tell what you are going to get with exotic descriptions. That's not unlike any other unique cocktail concoctions. So if you don't like it, it was $18. I suppose you can send it back if you absolutely don't like it but otherwise meh. Cute atmosphere, service was good at that time. Glad I went to see what it's about but certainly don't need to make a point of getting back. read more

I had never heard of the place but while having dinner at Bologna my friend says we should try since it was next door. It's a dark and sexy vibe inside with a nice mix of music playing at a good level. Our waitress was friendly and explained the drink options. I played it safe and ordered a drink with bourbon, honey and lemon (I can't remember the name). It was tasty but I can imagine it would be even better if served warm. My friend took a chance and ordered the bartender choice. The server was shocked that he really selected it without any type of restrictions. My friend and I were excited to try The Eastman but were extremely disappointed by the unprofessional and condescending service we received. When I simply got a napkin, the response from the bartender was dismissive and patronizing. Later, when my friend adjusted the lighting settings (which seemed to be accessible to customers), we were spoken to as if we were children, with staff making comments such as, "Can we stop 'playing' with the lights? They break really easily." We are adults and expect to be treated with basic respect when patronizing an establishment. The dismissive and unprofessional attitude from the staff created an unwelcoming atmosphere, making it clear that customer service is not a priority here. My friends and I visited on a busy Friday and were able to be seated quickly with a packed house. The owner was there and very personable and the staff was amazing. We ordered 2 non alcoholic drinks as well. They had a good NA selection. The best cocktail out of our four was the Eastman Espresso, a spin of the espresso martini. The other drinks were good but seemed off, maybe it was missing something but I couldn't say what. For the price, we were hoping all drinks would be five stars. Beats out Baus every day on cocktails, Hemingway may have a better/larger bourbon selection but the cocktails at Eastman are second to none in downtown.
