I've never really explored Tallahassee- we've driven through or have come and gone for meetings, but today I had the chance to see some sights! On my hilly adventures, I explored Cascade Park and then ate in the historic power plant turned gastropub The Edison Restaurant. Such a cool use of a historic space with great food and wonderfully attentive servers- the patio space looks amazing, but I ate at the bar since I was alone and ready for a refreshing cocktail and some A/C after a very warm walking tour of the area. Start to finish, amazing! Highly recommend the shrimp skewers- they were perfectly grilled and huge! The gentleman next to me got the pork chop- wow, it was a gorgeous and generous dish! Loved it! I had very low expectations of this restaurant because I've heard so many mixed reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. Our server, Cam provided exceptional service! He was so patient, attentive, and helpful with our orders. He never made us feel rushed or as though we didn't have his full attention. That goes so far. We got the ahi tuna (too much spicy sauce, so I had to send it back), fried chicken with gouda grits and eggs, buffalo chicken wrap, lavender cocktail, and Benedict. Passing through Tallahassee, I landed at The Edison for dinner on a Tuesday. The Yelp reviews are all over the board for this place. Lots of 5 stars, most mentioning the historic building. Lots of poor ratings for food quality and service. I sat at the bar and had a few craft beers from Tallahassee breweries and an Edison Salad with grilled chicken. The beer and wine menu is full and nice. This place is great for Happy Hour, no doubt. Here is my rating of my dining experience. Happy Hour - 5 stars. The ambiance is spectacular. You only need to see the posted photos to see that. This building was Tallahassee's first power station. It stands 104 years old! The indoor and outdoor spaces are 5 stars! This property is a great asset. My salad was okay. Interesting items like artichoke and goat cheese, red pepper and pecans. The house vinaigrette was incredible! I asked the bartender what was in it and she did not know. It tasted like a spicy mustard/horseradish dressing. I loved it. The chicken portion was generous but it was tough and dry. A better restaurant would get the chicken breast hot, moist and tender. Not here. Food a 3 stars. Staffing, lots of college kids. Some are great. Others are clueless. I had no service issues and I love the energy of the young people. Service at the bar was a solid 4 stars. Overall, this place gets 4 stars from me. A definite Happy Hour watering hole. Dinner at the Edison it's a must do and even though we came right when FSU had a big game it wasn't too full , most of the inside seating required reservations but we got to sit at the bar and it was a full service bar . The mermaid drink with rum and blue curaçao was delicious surprisingly not too sweet . I tried the chicken pasta and spinach it was so fresh and just the right seasoning not too overwhelming . Great spot right at Cascade's Park. There is a lot of seating inside with a bar, plus tables outside. We visited on a Sunday night of move-in weekend and they had a lot of reservations so we were only able to get a table outside. There were plenty of fans to keep the area cool. The food was great and came out quickly. There were temp issues with two plates, the steak and salmon, so food had to be sent back to cook more. Overall the service was great. If I could give 6 stars to the Edison I would. Startling with the unbelievable atmosphere, we sat at the bar which was such a vibe, and the bartenders were so fun and were super attentive . The menu is perfect for ordering everything you can and sharing, and you can't go wrong with whatever you order. We started with the fried green tomatoes and got the lobster pasta as our main. The ambiance was lovely as it had high ceilings with the original electric building vibe, and it looked out over the Cascades park. Ordered: Skyway Chicken: Grilled chicken topped with Caprino cheese, roasted red peppers, basil, and white wine lemon butter. The chicken dish was delicious; however, the sides of mashed potatoes and green beans lacked flavor. Boot Ranch Pork Chop: A sweet, tea-brined, thick pork chop served over peach chutney and topped with candied, savory bacon jam. The pork was very thick and a little tough to cut. The bacon jam and peach chutney were delicious, but I did have to ask for extra chutney as there wasn't enough to go with the giant slab of pork on my plate. Once again, the sides were terrible. We stopped here before leaving town to come back to Miami, but I was a bit disappointed. The restaurant is beautiful and I saw that there was a second floor and it looked like they were having an event up there so that is great to know. But as for the food I was not happy. The brunch menu was very limited and they do not see ice coffee that you would have to buy at another restaurant downstairs if I understood her correctly. My favorite thing was the avocado toast and that was it. I returned my breakfast bowl because it it had melted white cheese on it and it did not taste good. Maybe the dinner menu is better. Don't waste your money! My boyfriend had been waiting to try the restaurant for awhile so we made reservations this past weekend. Upon arrival we were seated at table by the door to their patio which was very windy every time the door opened so we asked to move. The next table was great and out of the way. He ordered the Tuscan chicken pasta which was difficult to cut and very chewy and had to be sent back. The manager actually was the one to bring it back to the kitchen. I ordered the Edison burger. I was never asked how I wanted it cooked and it arrived a medium rare. That also was sent back as it was too rare for me. The next burger was great except there was a char on the bottom that was crunchy and actually well done which again I wasn't asked how I wanted the burger cooked. The waitress really didn't make attempts to come back to check on us at all, then again neither did the manager. We were extremely disappointed to say the least. No. No. No. What used to be slow service is now an endurance contest. Arrived before 5:30 and the wife finally came out to the car after paying the bill at just before 7:30. In between we had an appetizer, one refill on drinks and our entrees. If we had ordered dessert like we planned it would have been after dark getting to the car. As it was we had to hunt up our wait person or we might be still sitting there. Food was ok when it finally came out but nothing to get excited about so it will probably be a good long time before we get here again. I chose The Edison for my birthday dinner because its website promised an upscale dining experience with a picturesque setting in a historic electric building. Regrettably, my birthday dinner here was profoundly disappointing, leaving much to be desired in both food quality and overall ambiance. Culinary Disappointments: Uninspired Flavors: The dishes lacked seasoning, rendering them bland and unmemorable. A pasta dish, accompanied by a Cajun chicken add-on, was particularly underwhelming; the chicken was devoid of any discernible Cajun spices, tasting insipid and unseasoned. We resorted to adding salt and pepper to nearly everything just to give it some flavor. Buffalo Chicken Dip Fail: One of the worst appetizers of the night was the buffalo chicken dip. When it first arrived, the cheese was hard, as if it had been sitting out far too long. After stirring, it turned into a thin, unappetizing liquid mess, making it nearly impossible to enjoy because it wouldn't even stick to the stale tortilla chips. Tuna Tartare Disaster: The tuna tartare was an absolute joke--both in taste and presentation. It lacked any depth of flavor, and nothing about it was remotely appetizing. To make matters worse, the accompanying tortilla chips were lazily thrown onto the plate, many of them broken and stale. Subpar Desserts: The bread pudding was excessively dense, resembling a hardened cake rather than the moist, rich dessert one would expect. No one at the table could finish their desserts. We didn't even make it half way through them. They were blasting songs like, "Low" by Flo Rida and T-Pain, old songs by rapper Nikki Minaj and other outdated, loud rap songs intended for a Miami Beach club atmosphere. It made zero sense. Tableware Issues: The glassware perspired excessively, leading to constant puddles on our slanted table. This resulted in water spilling into our laps, which we were constantly trying to soak up with linen napkins that didn't absorb a drop. So we eventually started using our hands to slide the water off the table onto the floor just before it hit our dresses. The entire time. Final Verdict: The culmination of these disappointments was a bill exceeding $200 for a party of four--a price point that would be acceptable had the quality of food and service met even basic expectations. Instead, it felt like dining at a Chili's with a far more expensive price tag and way worse food. The Edison is the epitome of style over substance. The photos on their website and Google make it seem like a fine dining experience, but the reality is a generic, overpriced meal that lacks finesse, flavor, and attention to detail. I genuinely wish I could redo my birthday dinner elsewhere. Needless to say, I won't be returning, and neither will anyone who dined with me that night. The vibes at The Edison were super cute and fun--definitely a great spot for a night out and was walking distance from my hotel! The staff recommended the giant pretzel because of the beer cheese, but they did mention they recently changed the recipe. Unfortunately, it wasn't my favorite, the pretzel got hard very quickly and made it hard to enjoy. On the other hand, the Skyway Chicken was delicious! The goat cheese was an unexpected surprise but really nice touch as it's my favorite, adding a bit of creaminess that balanced the dish well. The restaurant is beautiful! It was an old power plant that they transitioned to a restaurant. The bottom of the restaurant used to be offices and they changed it to a kitchen. The middle floor is the restaurants and the top floor is restrooms and a nice event space for private dining or events. The food was spectacular I had the salmon with mashed potato's and green beans. The crust on the salmon was out of this world delicious. Shoutout to the chef. The service was good our server was very friendly, we forgot our keys and she ran out to give us our keys. We stopped for lunch on a Sunday and found that the menu changes between 2-4. We decided to stay and try anyway. We say on the patio, I have a service dog, someone had broken a glass at some point and it was under our table and across the walkway between us and the next table and under that table also. Had to request to have it swept and cleaned up. I ordered the smash burger with sweet potato fries which came out cold, my daughter ordered the Edison burger and onion rings, my friend ordered the steak sandwich and a salad, the steak pieces were either chewy or hard and the salad was great except for the croutons which were hard as jaw breakers.
