Very disappointed for a number of reasons. My brother was a very big supporter of Elm, bringing in SEVERAL customers on more than 1 occasion, regularly dining there, and purchasing several gift certificates for friends and family. However, bringing in out of town family to the Elm this past July, I had a very bad experience. While we had received a good meal at the Elm in the past, this time our food was cold, undercooked, took a long time to arrive and simply tasted bad. The poor quality of food was only exceeded by the poor service. The place was not that crowded, and it was a weekday. Covid was not to blame. The staff was inattentive and acted annoyed at every request. The bartender was equally dismissive with every inquiry about cocktails. It was as if none of the servers wanted to be there. I wanted to attribute this experience to just an "off night". However, after hearing my comments, and given his support of the institution, my brother made an inquiry. The owner clearly was not interested in listening to the lack of satisfaction. He acted as if his time was being wasted and that he simply did not need our business. I have never posted a bad review about a restaurant in that every joint can have a bad night. However, the discourteousness and a refusal of even acknowledging the issues compelled me to write something. read more

What a great place! The first time I went here my boyfriend and I went for our anniversary dinner out on the rooftop and it was perfect! Great weather, great vibes, and I thoroughly enjoy the variety on their menu. I've been a couple more times since and definitely recommend. read more

It's not very often that I make it a point to write a Yelp review after trying a new restaurant, but The Elm inspired some prose this evening - in a good way. We stopped by here (with our kids) after running some errands on Sunday and it was really a great experience. First off, the atmosphere is tremendous - one of the best rooftop dining set ups in the Western Burbs. We were seated outside, but unfortunately some bad weather rolled in. We were brought inside to a very socially-distanced dining room. The decor of the restaurant is really nice and clean. Second, the drinks (we can argue if that's most important - you could be right) were top notch. I had a Mr. Fox which was basically a Rye Manhattan that was excellent. My wife opted for a beer and all of the draft selections were local. She had a Cactus Pants from Buckledown. Third, the food was amazing. I had the risotto with pan-seared scallops and my wife had the crab cakes. Both were amazing, and my wife is a bit of a crab cake snob - so well done, The Elm. Kids reported the chicken tenders were top notch - so that basically made the evening. The only slightly little flaw was the service was slow - clearly chalked up to being new and having many diners move from outside to in - no big deal, they'll get that down quickly. Reviewers who have stated that this is average bar food are being generous. A $17 Charcuterie plate which contained (and I am not exaggerating here) 4 small crackers, 5 pecans, 1 two inch piece of cheese, and 4 small circle cuts of salami. Entrees were average at best (a blah salad with an overcooked little piece of salmon). It was as if they had run out of food and needed us all to share whatever was left in the kitchen. The fact that this is a bar vibe doesn't excuse the bad food (Fullers, Hampton Social etc. all have great food). However, it doesn't seem to be slowing them down a bit - they were packed. read more

The wait staff is very friendly and accommodating. I can here with friends and 2 babies. They made sure we were comfortable at our booth. They have a nice variety in food choices without being overwhelming. The ambiance is very classy without feeling stuffy or pretentious. I would love to have a nice event here! read more

The atmosphere was great, the food not so much. This was my first trip to The Elm. We ordered the octopus and it came out like hard rubber. Not a good idea to put an item on the menu that you don't know how to cook. We brought the issue up to the waitress and there was basically no response. Too many other decent options in the area so we will dine elsewhere. read more

I've been to the Elm for a wedding shower a couple years ago and it was lovely. I've been there several times since to have a couple after dinner drinks on the rooftop. The ambiance is my favorite thing about this place - I love it. I love the couch areas with the fireplaces and how they have heaters to access the rooftop in the winter time. The cocktails are decent, not my favorite. I wish they would revamp the drink menu a bit. I went to eat dinner here recently and it was disappointing. The waitress seemed like she had an attitude and was not very pleasant. The food was meh, but the worst part was the slow service. It was very slow. I would recommend this place for drinks or a party, but think they need more staff (waitresses and/or cooks?) during peak dinner hours. read more

I had the pleasure of a Saturday lunch at The Elm on their rooftop bar. A year of mostly ordering/dining in the confines of my own home means a restaurant doesn't have to do much atmosphere-wise to delight me. The experience here did so much. The food was great. My son had the kids grilled salmon and it was phenomenal. I was leaning my fork into his plate more than once. My husband and I both had the striped bass sandwich. Delicious! However, beyond the food was the atmosphere. As the pandemic phases out, a place with mediocre atmosphere will feel like a vacation and a place with excellent atmosphere will feel like a hang out for rock stars. The Elm was more of the latter for me as I enjoyed a mimosa, sunshine, good food, and just BEING OUT. I forgot that "being out" feel and The Elm gave me a taste of good times to come. We took for it granted before. This is a very nice, upscale addition to DT LaGrange. As the city-to- suburb exodus continues, people will be looking for dine-out experiences like this. read more

We held my sister's bridal shower in the Kensington Room. The space was beautifully decorated upon our arrival. Our service was amazing. Carrie, our main server, was attentive, extremely helpful and kind. All event planning communications and documents were well organized via their private events portal. The food and drinks were outstanding. Best shower food I've ever had. Our guests were so happy and many remarked that they would come back to try the restaurant. read more

Bad service!! I was somewhat hesitant to book here because of past service mistakes, but decided we'd give it another shot and enjoy the rooftop. We had a midday reservation for Mother's Day on the rooftop, but were told we would be seated inside once we arrived. Strike one. It wasn't a big deal, but we were disappointed. The restaurant wasn't overly crowded, and we were seated right away in the middle of the main dining room, not hidden in some corner. After sitting for 20 minutes with no service, the waitress walked past multiple times and wouldn't even make eye contact with our table. I let the hostess know. Strike two. Still, nothing changed. After another 10 minutes, strike three. Our group got up and left, walked into another restaurant, were seated and served right away, and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon not at the Elm. I used to like this place, but unfortunately wouldn't go back because of poor service. read more

Brave for this place to open up during the pandemic; though its plans were well in motion by the time we locked down. In fact, it's turned out to be one of the few places in LaGrange with ample space for outdoor and socially distanced dining. It's cavernous by local standards. The menu is diverse and everything I've had so far (we've been here twice for lunch and once for dinner) is nicely done. I had the shrimp pasta last night - the noodles were unfortunately past the perfect al dente; but it was tasty nonetheless. We finished with some wild-ass science experiment by the mixologist (pictured). Coconut, vanilla bean, and spice infused rum (tableside) with a bunch of glass chemistry beakers and a bunsen burner and then poured over hot chocolate. If nothing else, it was fun as hell to watch. And it helped us keep the energy up for yet another couple of drinks by a private fireplace on the rooftop. This ranks as our top choice in LaGrange right now. read more

Buyer Beware. Ate lunch upstairs yesterday with my family. Ordered the Beet Salad and although very tasty, it was more of a spinach salad with a few cubed beets. Disappointed that it was not beets as titled. Our meals were OK not exceptional. Here's the issue Buyer Beware. As I quickly scanned the bill (looking to see if a tip was included) I noticed a 3% Service Charge. Thinking this was for the Server I adjusted my cash tip accordingly. As I left I asked the host/hostess if the 3% went to the servers. NO! It was to compensate for rising food costs. Really a service charge to add to their bottom line. I called later to talk to a manager and he confirmed it was to cover their costs. That they added this charge to keep their prices low. So they tack it on to the unknowing consumer. He said it was on the bottom of the receipt and I could refuse to pay. Too late now. My opinion, it was deceitful and underhanded. read more

This place is just delightful experience all around. The decor transports you to another place, with just the right mixture of modern with a touch of art deco sensibility. The food is delectable. Even with something simple like a chicken sandwich...every bite leaves you wanting more. I am obsessed with their french fries. They come hot in a silver cannister and are to die for. Not to be dramatic, but I think I dream about them sometimes...oh and the cocktails? I feel like I'm at the aviary! One of the best (REAL) Old Fashioneds I've had! We are visiting our relatives and ate dinner at The Elm last night. I'll get right to it... 1. Service was a bit slow. Water wasn't replaced until asked and salad plates were not removed from table until asked. 2. Appetizers were cheese spread (good) chopped salad (very good). Crab cakes were bland and baked. Very little salt. Frying would give them a nice crust and old bay or some type of seafood seasoning would have perked them up. 3. Two NY strips were cooked to order but not extraordinary. Reminded me of wedding dinner steak. Garlic butter, rosemary and garlic drizzle would have improved them. Grilled asparagus and potatoes were excellent. 4. Pork chop was outstanding but could have used a bit more sauce. 5. Risotto was definitely not risotto. Driest I have tasted. It was on no way creamy or have enough quality Parmesan. Worked in north Italy for 7 years and pretty well know a good risotto. No protein was added. For 20 dollars it was the poorest example of the entrees ordered. 6. We had 2 local beers and 3 mixed drinks. The drinks were great but price point could be lowered. 7. Both the chocolate cake torte and bourbon cake were excellent. Hope you enjoyed this honest review. There were hits and misses but nothing that can't be refined with a little extra care. read more

Overall disappointing. Went for a friend's birthday dinner, and chose The Elm since it can accommodate a lot of people and it's not in our usual repertoire of restaurants. All of us La Grange locals, and have had a few bad experiences with The Elm, but willing to put them aside and see if those were just coincidences. The ambiance of the room we were seated in was akin to a hotel conference room. It's pretty apparent that this room is used for private events, so the atmosphere was a little sterile. Full view of a tv that is likely used for slideshows during a bridal shower at brunch, and the lights about 20% too bright for a dinner, especially compared to the bar area's aesthetics. The cocktails we found to be uncreative, however our server tried and succeeded at pushing them. Multiple times we would try and order only to have our server asked if we needed another. If we said yes, they would take off in the middle of the interaction, ruining our chance to order food. The food itself might be the worst part. One appetizer was seemingly a slice of bread put into a toaster with some cheese and jam, then cut into thirds. This is suitable for the homemade lunch of a posh child, not a culinary experience. Everything else was just as confusing, and by the time we ordered entrees everyone decided to play it safe in ordering to avoid any other disappointments. The best culinary experience of the evening was the cake that we brought in, as this was the first time I heard a positive note about flavor all night from any of my friends. All being said, as a La grange local living a short walk away, I expected more. It pains me to not recommend a place to visiting friends or coworkers that might not be familiar with La grange. The Elm is no longer on any list of recommendations and is now coming with a warning. read more

The Elm is hands down my go to restaurant in LaGrange. Every meal I try is delicious but my usual order is the hamburger and chicken sandwich. The service is fantastic and quick. They make delicious and refreshing drinks and the atmosphere is fun and buzzing. They have a rooftop which is great for the summer. Can't say enough great things. read more

Very nice place -- I hope they do well, since it's a hard time for a new restaurant to be opening! The rooftop is beautiful, and inside space looked nice (and large!) whenever we're comfortable eating inside again. Lunch was delicious.
