I'm really surprised by some of these reviews. I find the ambience of the restaurant really cute and welcoming. Service was great too. Alexandria was friendly and very attentive. I read one review that said the place was dark and gloomy. That is not the case at all. The food is outstanding. I had the crispy stuffed chicken. I've had this same meal (although it wasn't crispy) at 5 or so other local restaurants over the years and Mattone's was the best hands down. I tried my friend's meal, Rigatoni Contadina, and it was excellent as well. I just went here last night and I've already told a couple of friends about this place. Had some great drinks and okay food at this LaGrange Park classic. It has a lot of history in the community and is a favorite among locals. Mattone has a pretty standard menu of Italian food like spaghetti. A lot of the familiar. The flavors may not be as good as they used to be so just know that and it will seem like better quality. Certainly the happy hour is the best time to come. It's expensive already so save a few bucks and it makes things quite an improvement. There's a lot of what to expect on the menu. Cocktails and pasta of course. They took forever taking everyone's order and then there was even more waiting. It's about $12 for the cheapest cocktails. They have a few bucks off martinis at the happy hour thankfully. A serious lack of vegetarian choices. There's even salads covered in bacon and pancetta. Has a few weekly specials to check out. It's $20 for the classics specials on Thursdays. Among the options are lasagna and spaghetti. This also comes with a choice of soup so you get lots with this. Actually a pretty filling meal. They can make the spaghetti without meatballs and stuff. Got to say it gets busy. It's only open in evenings. There's limited options for vegetarians. read more

I had problems once before but this time everything was great. Went with my adult kids, son-in-law and 2 little grandchildren. The staff was wonderful and so was the food. It is roomy so the noise level from other diners is very low. The amount of food is huge. Is it the best Italian food? I won't say that it is of the caliber of a few really high end places but the price isn't what you'd pay either. Came here for a nice dinner... but the food was very MID. The chicken parmesan was squishy, the spaghetti mushy. We also had the eggplant tower to start, and it was ok. I felt like everything was unseasoned. The bread was good tho! And the donuts were dry asf. The staff were lovely, hence the 2 star rating. Good service can only go so far! Had a colleague in town and wanted to take him to a good meal. I chose Mattone based on reviews and proximity to the office. All three of us were extremely pleased with our food. I frequently order Chicken Parmesan at Italian restaurants and I believe the one I had at Mattone was the best I've ever had!! They give you so much food that I'll be enjoying it again for lunch today! Apps were great, too. Service was personable, attentive and excellent. We got a little bit jammed up the other day, as we were set to go here for dinner with friends. I was under the weather and so we ordered food from here for pick up to bring back to house. The foods were as good as eating inside their restaurant. Next time if ever happens again, we would forgo the appetizers as they were not as good fresh, a bit soggy. We had so much food that we ended up eating leftovers for 2 more meals, not a bad thing. When I called to cancel our reservation, the staffer said I am sorry you could not make it for dinner, then I told we were ordering to pick-up. read more

Got a pizza for take out on this cold Friday. Great pizza overall - I wouldn't say quite thin crust, but it was done just right. Crust tasted great, plenty of great tasting sausage on the pizza and the sauce was the perfect balance (and not too sweet). One of our go to spots and will certainly continue to be! read more

Days ago, I was informed that there is a LaGrange and a LaGrange Park (welcome to the 'burbs!). We wound up having a nice dinner out at Mattone, an Italian restaurant in LaGrange Park. The four of us dined on an early Saturday evening after a day of estate sales and vintage shopping in the 'burbs. Our table was presented pitchers of water, and complimentary bread and butter as we contemplated our menu selections. Drinks ordered by us included martinis, and my Noon Whistle Gummypocalypse beer. Our friends who have been to Mattone previously recommended the ribs, so I went with the full slab of BBQ ribs with parmesan fries. I asked for the BBQ sauce on the side (also a recommendation), which allowed for the crispy char of the ribs to be fully tasted. My love enjoyed her entree of shrimp linguini in pesto cream sauce. Other dishes ordered by our group were fried calamari and linguini with clams. We all had leftovers so that we could enjoy some of this Italian food at home. Service during our dinner was fine and unintrusive. The post-meal wet naps were appreciated. There is a free parking lot for all Mattone patrons. read more

Make sure you don't order pizza on a Monday. The special pizza ovens are not used and the "tavern style" pizza is the only option. I went when the wood fired oven was in use and those pizzas are superior. The bread served before the meal is excellent. The service was not that great on Monday. The waitress knew the pizza was of poor quality but didn't warn me. No refills on coke. Never checked back. I really enjoyed my first visit on Friday but this is not a Monday restaurant. read more

I always order to go the stuffed chicken with risotto and stuffed mushrooms. The only problem is the chicken dish so salty. It comes with spinach but I don't know why so salty. We were in town for a roller derby tournament and after skating all day we came in last minute with a large party (17) before closing. We were a bit disheveled and stinky and dressed in our Jerseys and athletic wear. The staff set up a large banquet room for us and took the time to show care and smile even this it was close to closing time. The service was phenomenal. The bartender was awesome and funny. She made my friend a homemade non-alcoholic drink that was delicious. The wait staff was amazing and super friendly. The food was delicious and in large portions! Do not do business with this restaurant!! By far the worst experience ever!! What was supposed to be a good night turned out to be the worst!! The owner (Vito) lies about the prices! He quotes you and books you for a certain price just to lure you in to book the "package deal" and in the end turns around and charges you more than what was quoted. Clearly a lot of effort went into this place, but had a pretty 'meh' experience going in with several family members on a quiet Sunday. Restaurant was barely at 'mid' capacity and the server was incredibly friendly. But, then almost an hour went by and we were either hoping to order food or catch the server's eye to pay so we didn't leave without paying for drinks/apps. At that point, the very nice server came back and said pizzas would be about an hour. Slash half the group of 7's orders. We needed another minute to decide. 20min later we put in pasta orders. Above par pasta, but at this point... hard to judge. Apps: Calamari - hard to mess up - but wasn't ... well.. it was fine. Bread -- delicious! Great olive oil! but in the 2hrs before we were served food, we only had a small loaf to share that was gone in the first 15min. Might have been an off day, benefit of the doubt. 1st time to Mattone. We ordered a wood fired cheese ,sausage giardiniera pizza. A small order of cheese sticks and wine. My thoughts on the pizza. I was surprised at the lack of sauce and giardiniera on the pizza. I requested crushed pepper , which was given by the bus boy. He asked if I needed it spicier, I said yes. So he brought over more giardiniera, not my server , who seemed very busy. The place was busy , and I waited a bit. It seems like a forever wait ,especially when you have to wait to start eating food that's on the table. Don't you hate that? I understand it's a cold spell , but I hate sitting near the door , the blast of cold air when the door opens. I guess next time I'll ask for a table away from the entrance. Loved the red sauce and the meatballs. They were perfect, but the Grilled Calamari was horrible - soaked in Balsamic like a soup. Here is a clue, Like Garlic, Balsamic is to ENHANCE the flavor, NOT overpower it. If you cannot taste the food because of too much of anything, then you ruined the dish. If all you taste is Garlic, then they used too much garlic. In this instance, I could not get past the sweet, overpowering flavor of Balsamic. Really bad. Grilled Calamari is just that - GRILLED and it should look grilled! If Balsamic is lightly drizzled on top, that is fine, the rest of the Balsamic can be served on the side for those who like more. Similar to GRAVY on Turkey or meats. You should not smother the dish - you serve the graving on the side. This was plane BAD! But in all fairness, the meatballs were EXCELLENT, and the red gravy was near perfect. I will go back and try something else, but it will not be Grilled Calamari. read more

I tried Mattone's for the first time and my friend loves this place. The sons of the original owner remodeled the place and it's very updated and has a wood burning oven in the center of the restaurant between the dining room and bar. I wasn't a fan of the pizza but enjoyed the chicken marsala and my husband liked his cheese manicotti. They have a great selection of wine and beer and the service was wonderful. My favorite was the dessert and they take a little longer because they make their donuts fresh with strawberry or chocolate dipping sauce. read more

I'd put Matone's in the category of a traditional Italian spot that is reliable enough to stick around for a long time but is unlikely to knock your socks off. That's not a bad category to be in if you're trying to make a buck. They have a marvelous brick pizza oven smack dab in the middle of the restaurant and while I've never tried the pizza, it looks good. The space is open and airy. Lively but not loud. The charred Caesar is really good - and plentiful enough to easily split. The warm bread served with olive oil and parmesan is worth the calories and carbs. I had Braciole, which I rarely see on menus. It was tasty, but the flank steak was tough in places. My daughter ordered alfredo and she gave it a thumbs up. It was crowded for a Monday night so that says something. The service was attentive. If you're hankering for pasta, their choices are limited IMHO. But lots to choose from otherwise. read more

The food choices ranged from Pizza to Prime Rib to Ham to every kind of side imaginable. Drinks were not included, but were reasonably priced. My son and I both had Bloody Marys. Their ravioli was to die for. I loved the broccoli and pasta. French Toast was Yummy. When serving scrambled eggs to a crowd - Care needs to be taken because the eggs in the bottom turn green.
