Having visited Argentina a month ago, I was super excited to try The Empanada Box in Covington, KY! I'm a fan of baked empanadas (rather than fried), so the selection here was wonderful and the 3 I tried were superb!! Sometimes empanadas can be full of air pockets and limited filling. Not only were The Empanada Box flavors delicious, but also the empanadas were FULL. I think the imagination that the owner has shown in expanding the flavors from savory and sweet Argentine flavors (such as the Buenos Aires) to the Cincinnati Chili flavor or Kentucky bourbon shows adaptability and a wide appeal. Flavor names are so helpfully stamped on each empanada! There are bottled drinks for sale as well as sweetened and unsweetened traditional Argentine Mate tea . A selection of mate tea bags pictured. In addition to catering, The Empanada Box offers a take and bake pick your own 8 frozen empanadas box which costs about $32. My 3 dine in flavors were so tasty that I made sure to repeat those in my selection of 8 flavors. Then also included chicken pot pie flavor of the month, breakfast, etc. This way I can bake empanadas at home for a few easy meals. I especially loved visiting with the staff & hearing the story of how the owner spent time perfecting his style in various places and has now watched his business grow through several phases (including Findlay Market) over the last 3 years to the current cozy shop offering dine in right off of the street parking in Covington. read more

I got a combo with a Cinci chili and Louisiana empanadas. I liked the Louisiana better. The Cinci chili was ok, just beef inside an empanada. I really like empanadas in general though and been a good while since had any good ones before this. Sauce of herbs in oil that came with them was great. Chips and salsa good. Didn't have time to eat there, just stopped to get it to go on the way out of Cinci. It was a nice size though, not big and not too small. They brought out me and my friends food pretty fast. I like that you can get boxes of frozen ones to go. Whenever I get around to going to Cincy again, I'll try to stop here! read more

We always get a box to go for a party or Sunday football games. They're a big hit! Meat and vegetarian options. You can keep a box of them in the freezer for a quick, fresh meal. I just so happened to stroll by this place recently. As I reside in the area. Casually walked in, struck up cool conversation with one of the young male owners and went on my merry way with a couple of Jamaican-style empanadas in tow. When I got home soon after and took a I bite... it was HEAVEN! Sweet and savory with a tiny bit of spice and nice portion of meat to boot. I've literally been back several times over the past week!! Their 30 years of home experience shows. Not only are these empanadas crazy delicious, their appearance is picture perfect. Let's star with the crazy deliciousness. Savory, traditional, veggie, sweet, fusion food and gluten free are all available. My favorite are the Buenos Aires variety. They remind me of the first empanadas I ever tried. Buenos Aires' are well seasoned with traditional flavors. Baking them filled my home with the most delicious scent. Baking also gives a flakey crispness to the outside, that would not happen with microwaving. They pack more of a kick than I was expecting. That kick was more than welcome. Filipino are nice as well. One of their fusion varieties. Raisins create a sweet and savory combo. While Buenos Aires are the favorite of most of my family, Filipino is my youngest's favorite. Buenos Aires is too spicy for him. What makes them pictures perfect is that each empanada is prepared with care. Filling is always plentiful, resulting in a plump product. While crimping is done to hold in filling, here it is done in a visually appealing manner. Empanadas are branded with the name of their flavor. Not only does this look neat, but it helps prevent confusion. Empanadas are pre cooked, and frozen. Each is individually wrapped for freshness. This lets one bake as many or few as they want. The empanadas can be eaten fresh, and you can also buy them frozen to take home for later. I went by that same weekend and talked to one of the family members that own the place. Explained to me each empanadas with great detail and gave me some recommendations. TLDR: mostly good eats, but somewhat greasy and a bit pricey for the portion provided Ive only been here once, but because I was sharing with three people I got to try a half dozen or so of their offerings They pretty much only offer empanadas (frozen or heated and ready to eat) and drinks. I was and am ok with that, just a fair warning to anyone who thinks they might get a soup, salad or a side here to make a rounded-out meal Every empanada is as of this writing 4 dollars apiece, regardless of how cheap or expensive the fillings are. Good if you want short rib, not so good if you want veggie or fruit fillings. There are discounts if you buy 8 or 12 in one purchase. Each is stamped with its name to so you can easily tell the different fillings apart Now.....I'll grant you that 4 dollars isnt a lot, but it will take a normal eater 3 to be anywhere close to satisfied. 4 or 5 if youre a big eater, and at least 2 if you are a light eater. So I dont think this place is a great value proposition That said, The short rib (my personal favorite), the Jamaica, and the Buenos Aires are very tasty, albeit quite greasy. Take care - the filling in the Buenos Aires was almost a paste, very little texture, hard to keep the filling from oozing out. I was warned that the Jamaica was spicey hot, but I'd say it has less heat than your typical medium hot wing. Which was good by me, as I am not a fan of a lot of spice heat. We were not nearly as happy with the Parma. When I return, I will definitely get the short rib and the jamaica again, and probably try the Lebanon or the Philly We tried 3 of the vegetarian options. The Louisiana wasnt nearly as greasy and was also quite good. Same with the Samosa. We did not like the texture or taste of the California at all - sorta like biting into little bits of rubber in a pastry shell All empanadas get a small container of chimmichurri sauce, which Mr Google says is a traditional condiment accompanying empanadas. Its mostly garlic in oil plus some finely minced herbs. I didn't dislike it....but its probably an acquired taste. You should at least dip your finger in and give it a taste. oh - I should say that while empanadas can be either fried or baked, all of the offerings here appear to be baked This is a very small counter service operation with very limited seating, so I recommend going alone or perhaps with 1 other, and having a backup plan as far as where you'll sit down. Parking can be tricky. They dont have their own lot and there may not be an available spot within easy walking distance on the street They do take credit cards Extremely friendly service. Delicious empanadas! I've only had the hot and ready empanadas though they have frozen ones for sale too. The cinci chili is soo good, like a coney in an empanada. I really enjoyed the Jamaica ones too, perfect mix of sweet and savory with a kick. Finally, if you're lucky to get one before they're gone please indulge in the dulce de leche and banana empanada- it's so good but beware a bite can leave you with dulce de leche all over your chin (if that's a bad thing). Came here on a suggestion from a coworker and a customer. Nice place, clean and bright. The staff was friendly to other ppl, but I didn't get a greeting at all. It was obvious I didn't know what to order, and that it was my first time here, but they didn't really ask questions or speak to me unless I directly asked a question. I even said out loud to another customer, who was paying for a pick up order at the counter next to me, that it was my first time there and still nothing. Small mom and pop restaurant specializing in...you guessed it empanadas. I had the Jamaican, buenos aires, and Philly steak. The Jamaican is amazing full of flavor sweet and very savory. The chicken is extremely tender and juicy and the sauce is to die for. The Philly is good needs some type of sauce in my opinion. The buenos is good reminds me of a mexican chili in a empanada form.
