We really liked this place. This historic building may cause you to think the rooms would be dated, but they have been updated to have all the features you would like without losing the quaint vibe. The location is within walking distance of the waterfront and all the businesses there. I was sold on some of the images shared on the booking site. As soon as you walk in, it feels a bit regal and impressive. You stay a couple of nights and realize it's way past its heyday. The room and amenities feel a bit outdated. It does have somewhat of a haunted creepy vibe (but it looked the least from when I was researching.) I will say forsure, don't get sold on the free continental breakfast. It was hard boiled eggs, some bread and pastries, yogurt, unripe bananas, and some microwaveable sandwiches you might see from 7Eleven. Overall, the hotel served its purpose, just a place to sleep and get ready. read more

Here's the deal: the Eureka Inn was once a fashionable, swanky hotel. Not anymore. What is really upsetting is that the "Trademark Collection by Wyndham" completely misrepresents the hotel on their website! It lies! Website says there's a bar and restaurant. No and no. We peeked through the locked restaurant doors and saw an empty, dusty room. I'm sure it was a fun and swinging place long ago, but now it feels depressing. Yes, it's interesting that many famous people have stayed here, but the heyday is over, and it feels like a sad place. Even the swimming pool was closed. Also, the room is subpar. I wish this historical place could be revived to the gem it deserves to be, but the surrounding neighborhood appears to be decaying. Who knows what could happen in the future. We spent the weekend here, and it was a nice, quaint, older hotel. I really liked the softness of the wood everywhere, unlike many of today's cold, modern hotels. Walking in, it looked really stylish and cozy. Lots of pictures and articles adorned the walls. Our room was nice and clean. Does it look dated with the wallpaper and lamps? Yes, but it added to the charm. The bathroom didn't have much space around the sink to put toiletries, and the door opened centimetres from the toilet. We enjoyed our short stay here. Because of its historic nature, the amenities are not modern. You won't find a fitness facility. Sadly the bar and 2 restaurants are closed and in many respects it feels like the hotel is seeking by budetarily, especially since they don't have daily housekeeping service. Such a beautiful and historic hotel! Needs to be a museum, it's aging to much to be a 365 hotel. No AC, No fan, parking is mainly across the street and has homeless people looking inside cars and garbages. I went to Walmart 5 minutes away and had to buy a microwave and fan to stay alive. I can't wait until the new Hilton in Eureka is built - the older hotels should be marked as 50% camping and adventure because they have no amenities in your actual rooms. The rose cafe and bar are barely open with only 1-2 people who frequent the bar at night that I've seen. The ONLY reason to stay here like I did was to check out and embrace the historic look of this hotel. Walt Disney to the Rockefeller stayed here - clearly because of its Victorian old house feel. Way better than the eagle inn since it's bigger and not crowded with night life on the first floor who keep you up. But instead you get the opposite feeling - a dead empty hotel. I don't believe in ghosts, but this would be the place in eureka to tell those stories. Parking - If you have handicapped there is a tiny lot in the back corner of the hotel otherwise they ask you to park in their lot across the street. It's locked midnight - 6AM so you have to call the hotel for in and out privilege like a child because only 1 person runs the customer service and 1 person cleans the rooms. Cleaning Service - You can tell when a hotel is older because cleaning service has their kids running in the hallways. It is beautiful and reminiscent of the twenties to 50s five past presidents have stayed here and a lot of prominent people. Loved this lovely, old hotel built in 1922. My room was very clean and cozy. The lobby is super lush and the halls are filled with pics of the rich and famous who have stayed there. The hotel is in the old part of town which is rundown due to the economy there. Lots of homeless in the streets but I was not bothered by anyone. I loved the old building and it's history. The staff was pleasant and the parking in the back was convenient. All the restaurants were closed including the bar. If the Overlook Hotel was real, it would be the Eureka Inn. You're just waiting for the two creepy little girls in blue dresses to come around the corner and say "come and play with us...forever and ever and ever" This is a vintage hotel for lack of a better term. That's the charm I suppose. It's defiantly old with really small rooms and a bed and pillows that are not exactly comfortable. I did like the historical items and photos throughout the lobby and all the portraits even though some of them creeped me out. Breakfast is provided, it's passable, not bad but just low effort. Staff was nice and helpful. If they'd just upgrade the beds, you can keep the old push button telephones and the clunky wall heater things. My friend and I stayed here for one night on our way down the coast. The hotel is large but quite antiquated. There was a huge "living room" area in the lobby that they had decorated with a large tree so it made it feel cozy. We checked in with a lady at the front and she was very friendly and allowed us to have a slightly later check out time which was nice. The rooms were quite antiquated and did not have much. Additionally, the walls were paper thin so I could hear the next door quite clearly the whole night. They provide a free breakfast which consisted of some pastries, toast, yogurt and drinks. All in all, a large, older hotel with lots of history that holds both pros and cons. read more

I love " walking through history". There is a level of amazement that completely can enhance an experience when spending time, visiting, historical places, dining in them, and it's that feeling of walking through the words of a really good book. The Eureka Inn was supposed to be one of those magical historical places. I was so excited to spend the night at this hotel. There have been some famous figures from my past that have stayed here, some amazing political figures that have stayed here, and some well-known people from The world that have stayed here. You can tell the excitement was building. Parking was fairly easy enough and free which is always a huge plus. There is no one to assist with bringing bags in, but we were able to find baggage carts on our own, and bring our luggage into the hotel. Upon checking in at the desk, the woman sitting behind the plastic wall was abrupt, we both tried to chalk it up to her, perhaps having a bad day. After we had paid for the room, and the intent was to be able to put a little time in working, she informed us that many of the amenities that we needed would not be available. I personally questioned this because how could Internet not be available in the hotel? She pretty much made it obvious that she didn't care, and it created a problem for us. We decided to take our things to the room and go from there. Upon entering the room, Eiht, the fact that the bed was made, the floors were incredibly dirty, both in the bathroom, as well as throughout the suite. The bathroom... Not only is this disgusting to have to write, but it was disgusting to have to deal with. The toilet was filled with what I only assumed to be human feces, the bathtub and sink were filthy, and there were bugs, crawling all over. The sink itself was basically a bowl sitting on top of a makeshift Table that was literally stuck between the commode and the shower/tub stall, blocking off safe entry into the shower. The sink was not attached to the makeshift table and very easily could have fallen, and either broken, or someone would've gotten hurt. The thought of going downstairs and dealing with the lady behind the desk was unappealing, but there was no way that we were staying in that room. We went down to speak to her, and at that point explained about the Internet and other things going on in the room, and she said that she would drastically reduce the cost of the room. She also said that she would move us to another room. We were given keys to another room, and moved the luggage ourselves. This room had two beds in it, the floors were dirty, countertops were filthy, and the bathroom was also dirty. Thankfully, the commode was clean, but that was the extent of it. Ants and bugs could be seen crawling all over the room. I certainly didn't want to have my personal belongings in this room nor did I want to stay there. we spoke to the woman again and she said that that was just the condition of the hotel and all the rooms are the same. We both found that hard to believe. A quick trip to a local store, and I was cleaning up the room so that we could spend the night in it. No one, and I mean no one should have to clean a room that they're paying to stay in, especially one that cost as much as this one. The following morning we went downstairs for the breakfast that was included in the cost of this overpriced room, and there was no breakfast to be found. There was a couple of pieces of fruit, and a stale muffin that look like it came from Costco. We were not late to breakfast , we were there at 7:30 in the morning because we both wanted to get out of the hotel at that point. I went to the desk and I spoke with a man and explained what our situation had been from start to finish. I said the woman was going to adjust the rate and he said he would take care of it and make sure that, we were compensated for the room, and apologized that we had to deal with the fiasco, etc. As it turns out, my credit card was billed for the full amount, and I have tried numerous times to get the hotel to make this right. They refuse to do the right thing and honor their word. DO NOT STAY AT TGID HOTEL. Absolutely do not dine in this hotel. Aside from being infested with bugs, and nasty toilets, I can't imagine how this place stays in business. read more

I wanted to stay at this place for years. I finally visited and to my surprise it was the most run down inn I ever stayed in. I went here on my honeymoon, after driving 4 hours I was looking forward to taking a bath and relaxing and to my surprise there was no plug to the tub, it had no plug I called the front desk phone barely work it was complete static, ex0lained the situation they said they would call back. 45 minutes later I called back and they said my room didn't come with one and himg up on me. The pool was close, the lounge was closed, a beautiful ballroom that was completely closed off. We went to get coffee in the morning and there was no cream or anything. I asked foe some got ignored once again. Filed a complaint and asked foe my money since this was my honeymoon. I was denied. And every one of the staff was rude and disrespectful. To be honest, after reading other reviews I was terrified to stay here. I booked myself a room for one night on my way up north hoping for a comfortable yet brief stay. I arrived at 11 pm and was greeted by a kind lady at the front desk. The lobby was beautiful, historic, and definitely clean. It was dark out and I was exhausted so she didn't mind that I was too tired to go back outside and put the parking pass on my dashboard. This was a kind favor. My room was clean, cute, and I slept very well. The bathroom was clean and everything worked well. I haven't yet tried the breakfast but honestly, I'll just grab a coffee anyway. Less good things: Smells like cigarettes, one tiny window and no AC, bathroom has no place to set anything down, noise travels too much, decor is outdated, breakfast was abysmal. I would be happy with my stay, if the price was cheaper. For $100 per night less, I would have been stoked. As it was, the price was way too much for a poorly ventilated room where I could hear the ancient elevator, and the bathroom had the cheapest features possible. We stayed for two nights at the Eureka Inn. It's very much a historic or period hotel. Grand from the outside and the lobby and lounge have that same grand historic atmosphere. Lots of wood, overstuffed furniture, photos of famous celebrities who have stayed there, a mezzanine around the lobby. The lounge had a piano player. It felt like you were walking into the past. Our room was fine. It had obviously been updated, but still felt rather old. However, it had all the important requirements covered. A comfortable King Size bed, the Wi-Fi was working fine, good water pressure, an in room mini-frig including a freezer. Our room overlooked the outdoor pool. It was too cold to swim, but it looked nice from above. One window opened out to let in fresh air. There was a small parking-lot beside the hotel and a larger fenced in parking lot which is locked overnight. We were an easy walking distance to downtown Eureka with a small waterfront, multiple restaurants, and they even had a little music fest one of the nights we were there. This hotel is an amazing museum of Eureka history! Plan on walking around looking at the displays - the famous that have stayed here are pictured, the old phone booths are still there, as well as the phone exchange desk. (If that's the right label for it.) The Christmas decorations are epic, with a huge tree, a perfect backdrop for pictures. Having said all this, the reek of the cheap air fresheners (which are plugged in everywhere) is so bad I will never be able to stay here again. I tried to sit on the couch in front of the spectacular Christmas tree this morning but eventually had to leave because of the headache I got from the smell. I asked at the front desk if they could be unplugged and after much deliberation she unplugged the one closest to me. As for everything else? I went to Walmart to buy a coffee pot because the coffee in the room and downstairs is awful. There is a free breakfast with Cheerios, bananas, Costco muffins, yogurt and hard boiled eggs. Staff is friendly and the room was clean. There is a pool, which oddly is not pictured on the website. Plenty of historical bits and pieces in display cases to look at. read more

The Eureka Inn is a charming Inn, which transform you to it's 100 year old charm. The Inn was built in 1922 and has hosted many historical people and movie stars. The Inn has kept its old 1920's charm with classical furniture and period pieces. The staff at the Inn are gracious, friendly, and very helpful with their guests. The continental breakfast is good with coffee, pastries, and fruit. The rooms are well appointed with period pieces and have been remodeled for todays standards. Please not if you are looking for a large guest room the standard rooms are small (about 250 sqft). The only complaints we had are the trash we found under the bed and some sort of stickiness on the furniture tops (due to the furniture polish they use the clean the room). The bathroom was immaculately clean which is a big plus. I called this hotel a few days before my reservation to check on whether they have microwaves in the rooms. They said they did but they do not. Also, the room floors are uncarpeted, and there is minimal heat. The TV also was very confusing. I cancelled my reservation upon check in but still was charged a $250 cancellation fee. read more

I called prior to booking to make sure they accommodated dogs, they said yes if she's a service animal which she is, so I booked my stay. When I arrived after 10 hours of driving they then said that they do not accommodate travelers with dogs and refused to let me check in, despite me having my service animals documentation and I was left completely stranded late in the evening. At best they did not communicate their policy to me accurately before booking, at worst it's illegal to refuse service to a person with a disability who has a service animal. I'm extremely upset. I always try to book local/historical places when I travel, which is often in my line of work, and this hotel did not have it together. read more

You can't beat what you get for this price. A charming old hotel with oil portraits of every celeb who ever visited. A lobby with ornate looking Victorian-style furniture upholstered in polyurethane. Walls thin enough to hear the neighbors going at it (or maybe they were just being theatrically loud for a couple minutes?) Slept well here for two nights. The hotel is misrepresented on the website. The hotel is very old. The rooms are small and the bathrooms are very small. The bathroom door would not open very wide because the door hit the toilet. The vanity and sink are smaller than a bar sink. When I booked the room, I specifically requested an ADA room. I was assured that I would have one. When I checked in, I was told there were no ADA rooms available and the front desk clerk was borderline rude about it. A restaurant was advertised, there was none. The clerk said the restaurant had been closed for a long time and there were no plans to reopen, again with a rude attitude by the clerk. Additionally, there was very little water pressure and very lukewarm hot water. This place is definitely not worth the money, very disappointing. read more

This stay, the location, the service is not just the only thing that is wrong with this property 1. Hotel is in need of serious updating. The rooms are old and dirty and do not have air conditioning. It was 92 degrees out during our stay and they handed a small 4" fan to make it "bearable" 2. The service all around was abysmal. We were set to stay for three evenings and just couldn't bear staying but the bare minimum there. The desk staff would not assist and made it almost impossible to cancel the remaining nights. 3. The location itself is scary. There are gates to the parking and we were warned to be careful with the unhoused population nearby as they can be aggressive. 4. The TV was a ROKU stick with basic service in 480. The internet WiFi did not function in the rooms and the front desk indicated that they only guarantee service in the lobby area. 5. Checkout was just as bad and was not even asked how we enjoyed our stay. Overall, avoid this place. The Eureka Inn is listed in the National Registry of Historic Place. Built in 1922, dignitaries, politicians and celebrities have stayed over the years at the Eureka Inn. Recently, Governor Galvin Newsom and his entouraged stayed in the suites of the hotel. When the owner Helen Barnum passed away in 1993, the place went into disarray among tax scandals with its new owner until it closed in 2004. In 2008, it was purchased in distress by Libo Zhu who renovated the property to bring back the integrity of the historic hotel to its original grandeur. Reproduction furniture made in China and what you would find at Home Goods was installed in the grand lobby and the guest suites were updated as little as possible. The hotel reopened in 2010. Unfortunately, covid hit in 2020 and apparently the Eureka Inn went back on hard times and seems to still be struggling. The guest rooms are somewhat nicely decorated with wood furniture and either carpeting or cheap vinyl plank floors. The bathroom is a bit small with no counter space but an air vent that seems to have no function. The TCL television had bad picture with limited and poor channel choices from their Roku streaming lineup. The number of electrical outlets by the bed were limited. No full or half length mirror could be found in the room. Not much amenities could be found in the room for a historic and what use to be a luxury hotel. Some of the carpeting in the hallway was even loose in some areas of the hotel. There is no bell captain nor help in bringing your luggage up the front steps to the lobby. Most normal expected hotel functions were more self-served. Housekeeping was kept to a minimum and only upon request or check-out. The restaurant and bar lounge were closed reportedly due to staffing issues, but I couldn't see any evidence that it would be open again anytime soon. As a result, the hotel was generally dead at most times even with the hotel fully booked. You either had to go somewhere to eat or drink or have meals delivered by local restaurants to the hotel. The complimentary continental breakfast is served in the converted Simpson suite off the grand lobby. If you aren't picky, you would be satisfied with the cold cereal, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, old fashioned donuts, croissants, bananas, and english muffins that were offered. With all their deficiencies, though, the staff at the Eureka Inn had a positive attitude and were extremely friendly and accommodating as much as they could. They understood the historic nature of the hotel and possible shortcomings. As I looked at all the other choices of hotels in the area, Eureka Inn may still be a better choice when in Eureka. Sadly, the once thriving and quaint city is suffering through high unemployment and rampant drug issues which you can see evidence daily out in the streets. read more

It was so interesting to walk through the property and view the paintings and photos of famous celebrities, Presidents and others who had stayed there over the years. The check-in staff were welcoming and friendly. Our room was cozy and clean with a nice view over the swimming pool. This place has a ton of history and so much potential but it's really just not worth it for the price. Wyndham has clearly made some effort to upgrade the rooms but the quality of those upgrades is pretty poor. It's about on par with what you'd expect from a basic clean motel, but for twice the price. The biggest detractors to this place were 1) the lack of reliable internet which meant the TV would cut in and out constantly. 2) there's no onsite lounge or restaurant, because they continue to be unable to staff it. It's far enough away from the downtown area (1/2 mile or so) that it's not super convenient to walk to any of the restaurants. 3) it would be great if they focused less on the famous dead people who stayed at the hotel in the 20th century and more on the living regular people staying here in the 21st century.
