I had an extremely bad experience with this shop and would never recommend it. I brought my De'Longhi Magnifica espresso machine in because of a grinder issue. Before coming, I researched the problem and found a YouTube video showing the exact same error, sound, and symptoms. In that case, the issue was caused by a small piece of metal stuck in the grinder, and after cleaning it, the machine worked perfectly. I explained this to the shop. After a long wait, they told me the grinder was "broken" and needed to be replaced. I did not believe this, especially since I had already seen identical cases resolved by simple cleaning. When I tried to explain and mention the video, the technician was rude, argumentative, and did not even let me speak. When I brought the machine home, it did not work at all. I later found out they had turned off a switch on the back of the machine and didn't bother to turn it back on before giving it to me. I had to call them, then drive 30 minutes one way, just so a rude employee could flip the switch back on. This felt like a complete waste of my time and showed zero respect for the customer. Their attitude was arrogant, dismissive, and unprofessional. I honestly believe they were trying to push an unnecessary and expensive repair. I purchased a Rancilio machine from the Expresso Shoppe about 15 years ago and I used to buy their coffee for a long time until their days/hours changed, and I was not able to get there on time. I was very happy with their service at that time and the coffee was excellent. So, when my current espresso machine broke, I took it there for repair. I did not bother to look at Yelp and check any reviews. Now I see that 7 out of 12 reviews are one star and all 7 are for the same issue as mine. Based on the date of the reviews, the lack of customer service goes back for years so it seems that they are not willing to improve. When I dropped off my machine, I was told I would have an estimate within a week. When I called the following week, I was told there were two machines ahead of mine and I should hear back within the week. The following week I did not hear anything, so I called and again was told they would call within a week. Last time I called, on Sept 29th, I was told they would call by the end of that week. So, after two weeks and over a month of waiting I had not received the estimate. I emailed them and told them that if they were not able to provide the estimate within 3 days, I would come to get the machine. I never received a response to my email. Consequently, I went and picked up the machine. When I picked it up, they had about 10 machines sitting on the floor collecting dust and there was no one working on repairs, so it seems that they only do repairs on a part time basis. I wish they would have told me when I brought it in that it would take x amount of time for the estimate and let me decide if I wanted to wait or go somewhere else instead of changing the time every week when I called. I took the machine to another repair company. I had an estimate in 4 days and the repair completed 3 days later. I do not recommend the Expresso Shoppe. They are unable to provide timely estimates/repairs and keep their promises. read more

I called The Expresso Shoppe for some advice on a new espresso machine. David was very attentive to my needs and did some research and called me back and actually suggested a different machine. I have been a customer for 20 years. It's not always about a sale that drives him.... it's customer service. Once I tasted his roasted I was hooked. I go thru 1lb per week and it's always consistent. I have gone thru 2 Rancillo Silvia with David and the new machine suggested by him is a Super Automatic Philips 3200 LatteGo. First cup out not bad .... a little tweaking on the grind and next one out......perfect thanks to The consistency of Carioca ........,,it's the same as it ever was! We had an old machine that needed repair. He was totally honest with us as to whether or not it could be saved. We trusted him with our relic and David delivered. Our machine is working better than ever at twenty plus years old. So now let me tell you about the coffee they roast. It's unreal. The regular coffee is like rocket fuel. I really need to stick to his decaf which is super tasty too. My husband flies through the regular coffee so we replenish a lot. It's the only bean we buy. I was on the hunt for a used commercial grinder and initially found the Expresso Shoppe through an E-bay ad they posted for a refurbished machine. Although it was out of my price range, Dave the owner agreed to let me come to his shop to peruse the grinders he hadn't fixed yet. I settled on a very nice Mazzer SJ that only needed a deep cleaning and some new burrs to be back up to working order. I had prepared myself to receive an inflated price and have to haggle over the cost based on the older reviews I read about this place, but to my surprise, his first offer was a steal compared to what you find on craigslist and ebay. I would never return to this shop. I took an espresso machine in for repair and was told it would take 1 week for an estimate. I called after 2 weeks and they had not inspected it. I called after 3 weeks and the phone line was disconnected (later reconnected) and I had to waste time driving over to the shop to make sure they weren't out of business. I called after 3.5 weeks and still nothing. After 4 weeks I finally received my estimate. Keep in mind I had to pay $35 for this awful service. I received no apologies, no offer of a refund, just something about people being out of town. Not my problem. I chose not to have the machine repaired because I don't trust them at all and I had no confidence I'd get my machine back in any reasonable time. read more

The reviews seems to be very divided on the Expresso Shoppe. Its about expectations. First off, realize the owner is a real coffee aficionado. He has great depth in knowledge of how coffee is grown, how it is harvested, processed, roasted, and brewed. And he knows and loves coffee/espresso technology. Secondly, it appears his primary business is roasting coffee. So if you want someone who knows coffee inside out to advise you and repair your beloved espresso machine, this is your guy. My experience is that you will get an honest assessment of the repairs needed, and he'll talk through what options. I received great repair service, I got very useful advice on what to look for when/if I buy again, and I also picked up some fantastic roasted beans while I was there. Warning: you may be without your machine for a few weeks, but it is going to be as good as new when it comes back. read more

Also showed me how to avoid problems I'd been having without me telling him I had ever had them! BE WARNED! TERRIBLE place to do business with. Brought my Saeco Expresso Maker to The Expresso Shoppe for repairs in December 2017. I called numerous times seeking an status update but I was never able to reach anyone. Obviously they don't believe in returning phone calls. In the middle of February, I was able to talk to someone who told me they would call back with an update. Never happened. In March I spoke with the repair tech who said they had forgotten about my machine and would locate it and repair ASAP. Never happened and now we are in May (5 months) and still nothing. Tried calling numerous times, but never reached anyone. I have filed complaints regarding their business practices with BBB and the Illinois Attorney General. Update: May 18. Picked up my espresso machine. I called them to get an update and was told it's ready. Curious as to why they never called me. Repair took 5 months. The item was not repaired to my satisfaction as it does not brew coffee as well as it should. I have decided to buy a replacement and move on. Update: May 30. Better Business Bureau informed me they are closing this case as unresolved due to the fact the Espresso Shoppe has ignored several BBB requests regarding my complaint. Therefore the BBB has lowered this company's rating to "B". read more

WARNING! TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE Nothing "Express" about this place. I guess the should have seen this coming. The first time went to the store, they were closed due to "issues" with their business license. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I went back about two weeks laterI brought my espresso maker in for repair on September 17th. At that time, I was told that I would hear from them in 2 - 3 weeks with a diagnosis of what was needed and an estimate for repair. I was assured after that, the repair would be fast. I was also charged $35....immediately. 4 weeks went by and I had not hear from them, so I called. I was given a lame and vague, something about getting parts for my brand of machine was taking a while, blah, blah, blah. I said, but you haven't looked at my machine yet, so it may not even need a part. They had no answer, other than to say I would hear back from them very soon. At that point, I should have driving out there and picked up my machine, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt again. 4 weeks later, I had heard nothing from them. So yesterday, 2 months later from when I dropped it off....I picked up my unprepared espresso maker, that had NEVER been looked at. I suppose if the machine had actually been repaired, the length of time would be frustrating, but they never even got around to looking at it. Beyond terrible service. The only good thing that I can say is that there was no argument from them when I asked for a refund of my $35. I agree 100% with the other bad reviews on this page. They are from about a year ago....sad, that nothing has changed. My mistake is that I didn't think to read the Yelp reviews before going out there. Had I shipped my machine to a Seattle repair shop, I would have had it back probably 6 weeks ago. read more

Laid back nice folks. I was looking for a shop to repair my espresso machine and was referred to the shop by a friend. They repaired my Rancilio Silvia espresso machine, checked it out fully, and cleaned it. My machine has worked well since the repair 10 years ago! Not bad for a 20 year old machine! The shop also sells roasted beans for coffee and espresso. If you like a dark smokey roast, they are sure to please! read more

Send out my machine for repair twice to this store. The first time they didn't include my power cord when they mailed it back and it was poorly packaged that the drip tray broke. They fixed at no cost but it cost me another 35$ for shipping. The second time my machine broke, I sent it again to them but then they shipped it back without other parts and again no power cord. Had to buy parts from them since I couldn't find them. Repair is very expensive even though they say no more than 50$. Learned my lesson! Have to find another repair shop. read more

Great job in fixing my Mini Vivaldi II Espresso Machine! Happy I didn't have to ship it out for repairs which would have cost quite a bit of money. Glad there is a repair shop in the Chicagoland area. It took a couple months--so don't be too anxious but parts were needed. Its working perfectly now.
