I had to visit this location on an emergency visit. I called on the phone and was told that I can walk-in until 4 PM so I headed there. The parking for the location entrance is all the way around the other side from where you enter. Follow the lot a signs. Check-in was very quick. Service: great! I was seen by some residents who worked together great as a team to provide me with the eyecare service that I needed. They took the time to explain what was going on with my eye, and at the end they called in the doctor to confirm all their findings. Overall i was happy with experience and will be back. I've been coming to the Eye Institute for about 5 years and love the thorough exam. My students were pleasant and professional and the doctor who reviewed the students assessment was kind and patient. On another note with regards to the optical shop I stopped in before my appointment and after and not one time did anyone ask me if I needed assistance as I walked around looking at the glasses. I even signed in and my name was never called. They have a good selection of designer frames but unfortunately, I will not patronize due to the poor customer service. My eye appointment was in the evening so it appeared that the staff was not interested in working as they talked amongst themselves. Hopefully the daytime staff is more helpful. read more

I have been going to the Eye Institute in Chestnut Hill for several years. I am very pleased with the quality of the students and the doctors who have examined me. The steps o my examine are explained to me, as are the results and recommendations. The doctors want to be sure we totally understand the findings and the recommendations. They also make sure of my comfort throughout the exam.i am a patient of Dr. Meltzer. I really like how thorough he is. He is friendly and professional. Dr. Meltzer really cares about his patients as do all the staff, including the staff in front. Getting an appointment is very easy. They even have parking. I came into the eye Institute, and while the appointment process was easy, once I entered the lobby I was directed to a check in kiosk, which ended up taking me more than 15 minutes because it was requiring me to enter my insurance cards. The receptionist was a gentleman who came over and asked me to come over to his desk so that he could assist me. So my check-in took approximately 30 minutes total time, and I waited an additional 10 to 15 minutes more so my appointment time was 45 minutes late getting started, but the actual doctor and assistant were excellent my Annual check up went very well and the prescription was given in a timely manner. However, once leaving to go pick out my eyeglasses, my experience at the checkout could have been a kinder gentler person. My overall feeling is that while I'm giving it four stars, the extra star could be earned by teaching your front staff both at the check-in and in your eyeglass center to be kinder and gentler to their customers. Smile at them, talk with them, as if this is their job, and be more diligent and looking over the insurance, and explaining the details of the cost to the customer. Additionally, when I was notified that my eyeglasses we're ready for pick up, I called back per the instructions on the voicemail, and the person who assisted me was extremely rude, cut me off, told me she couldn't help me and referred me to a phone number that was nonworking. read more

The good things about the eye Institute are its accessibility, fee structure, reception staff, and comfortable waiting area. The wait time, in my last 2 visits have been excessive, more than 1 hour each time with no reasonable explanation for delay or communication with me that a delay should be expected. The students seem to do their best to follow protocols and procedures but senior oversight with these procedures/protocols are not consistent. During my recent visit the specialist did not wash his hands before examining me, came in with rubber gloves on and proceeded with my exam with student and resident in attendance. Not setting good example nor good practice with new patient. read more

I believe Dr. Draper should have ordered the MRA that I asked her for. I failed the neurological exam by almost falling over several times. She saw mucus and other unusual changes in my right eye. She said that I must have flinched during my OCT test with Dr. Sirgany or that his equipment was somehow faulty. I'd think if that was the case, he'd be seeing a lot of patients with this issue, but yet he's not. It's a very narcissistic person who can't consider that they are the one who's wrong. If she had simply considered those things could also be true of my visit with Salus, she would have ordered the MRA just to be sure, but she denied me that potentially life-saving test. If she was wrong, I certainly hope that Salus has good malpractice insurance. I thought the resident helping Dr. Draper was very thorough and had a much better bedside manner, for whatever that's worth. read more

I am in my 60's with 2 brain injuries. I have been seen in the pediatric department because they do an intense work up. I have had vision therapy there as well. Everyone, that treated or evaluated me were incredible. I can not thank them enough. I know most students that evaluated me are now out working and helping others. Best of wishes to all of them. I will continue to return to the eye institute for my checkups because of the thorough checkups by the students about to graduate and the Doctors supervising them. Our pre pandemic experiences were good. Unfortunately, things seem to have changed. My son has multiple eye conditions that limit where we are able to go for his necessary care. We were originally scheduled last week for a binocular vision appointment, to assess his eye condition, and to get a current prescription since his glasses broke. We were cancelled on and scheduled for today instead. I took my son out of school early, and drove an hour only for them to say they cancelled our appointment again. No phone call or advanced notice. I had even called at 10am to confirm with current covid procedures my daughter could come and was told see you in a couple hours. I have requested both my childrens records and am transferring their care to Wills Eye Hospital. read more

It was explained a doctor would evaluate and ask questions and determine if registration was necessary I saw a student Matthew Graner he listened to my concern about blood in my eye.He explained what he was going to do which put me at ease. The doctors are fantastic! Best that I've seen. However the people dealing with insurance at the window are nothing close to professional. She can't find my insurance number. All she said was no, not true, not true, not true not true,no way, eh em, while I'm trying to explain how my insurance works. She does not respecting me at all, deny every word I'm saying, and thinks she knows everything. I don't know if she realized that she's trying to refusing me from getting healthcare from my own institute. Then her manager came and found my insurance number right when she saw my document. All those things could be done in less than 10 minutes, and she wasted me 20 minutes. How can a professional not recognize a common, once-a year insurance from her own institute????? This is intolerable! My day was saved by the excellent doctor who performed everything quick and accurate in a very respectful and professional way. He earned the two stars back. read more

I have never had such a thorough eye exam and refraction. It was great. The students were very competent and consulted their supervising doctor when necessary. The doctor came in and rechecked all of the measurements and then spoke to me at length and answered all my questions. I never felt rushed like I do in most doctor's offices. My son has a visual impairment and we went to CHOP for a while. They are great at the major stuff but when it was time for basic quality of life stuff - what school accommodations are needed? What tools and tech would be helpful? Can he try them out? What shade and tints of sunglasses work best? CHOP had nothing and Salus had it all. You can count on a very thorough work up with each visit. Downside of that is that it takes a while but as a teaching institution they're way more thorough than a typical eye exam. And they love what they do and you can tell. read more

I visited the Eye Institute in Philadelphia. As I was being checked in, the receptionist asked for my DOB and address; I attempted to hand her my drivers license but she said that she would not be able to see it, that it would be blurry to her. I said to her that that is a HIPAA violation- she said, "I know, THEY'RE aware". I'm beyond confused why I needed to state my DOB and address verbally out loud with people standing behind me and security to the right of me. I have gone there for exams for several years. They are extremely thorough. Plan to be there a good half a day when you go because of the thoroughness of your exam. For older patient they check for retnopothy and glucoma. My vision had changed significantly in a year. They found a cateract on my right eye that had really worsened in a year and will require surgery. I am thankful they found it and were able to find the source of the radical change in my vision in my right eye. This is a teaching school and they are also involved with research which depending on any problem they may find could be helpful to you. read more

I was glad to see a young African American man as a resident. I appreciated the follow up phone call regarding the drops that were prescribe. I have gone to private doctors a few times but I come back to The Eye Institute because they are thorough and track my history.
