Was CRAVING fried catfish and the usual spots were closed for delivery. Lucked up on this place on UberEats and they had just what I was looking for, after seeing the reviews I realized I go by this place ALL the time. What the blank! So I took the chance and ordered and finally a risk that paid off. I hate now I only got a 1/2 of pound. I got the Mississippi Catfish and man, it was HEAVEN! It was fresh and actual Catfish (some places get away with smelt) and just so good. It puts you in the place of GooseIsland. It's similar but very different in its on way. It has been over 5 years since I ordered from fish keg. I had forgotten how good they were! Ordered 1/2 lb. of fish chips, 1/2 dozen cocktail shrimp. The shrimp were nice size and tasty. The tail shell has been removed for Easy eating. A little lemon,Adan of cocktail sauce and it's just like downtown!! I ordered the regular fish chips, nothing fancy like trout or perch. I don't think I would know one from the other when breaded and fried. The fish were lightly breaded and nice size pieces. I took the breading off of some pieces just to see and taste the plain fish. I don't know what kind of fish it was, and I don't care!! It was delicious!! Large, flaky chunks of white fish!! Again, a sprinkle of lemon and you are set!! My car had gotten stuck in the alley with a big snow that had happened recently and I couldn't drive, but decided to order through Grubhub. I am not a fan of fried food generally, but I cant resist the Fish Keg's offerings. There are 18 seafood choices, plus chicken, hush puppies and 8 kinds of salads/sides. I try to kid myself by saying that because the way everything is fried you end up with almost no grease, well then, it must be somewhat healthy. Yeah, dont fall into this trap. Fried is fried, after all. But, *Homer Simpson drool here*, man is it good! I am a big fan of the Cod, Shrimp, Orange Roughy for fish and the fruit salad is a nice, refreshing mix of pineapple and mango. Having moved to Evanston recently, I wanted to give the Fish Keg a try. Waiting 5 minutes to place an order and then another 15 minutes for my order to be ready didn't seem ok- especially when my food was only ok at best. Placing an order online doesn't seem to have advantages because there was gentleman waiting to pick up his phoned-in orderd and he waited almost as long as me. The poor young lady working in the store was taking orders, cooking and cashing out orders. Make sure that you're only eating once on a day when you're planning to hit the Fish Keg. I mean, you could get a small portion, but what's the point. You're already about to ingest a week's worth of fat calories; may as well make it a month's worth. This joint is a mile from my house but unfortunately I don't have the same high opinion as some other reviewers. The breading IS too heavy as someone else said; the cocktail sauce is too sweet (where's the horseradish?); and the creamy cole slaw has a vaguely fruity flavor. The shrimp is good but most of the fish is just so-so. The hush puppies are good too but not great. I should try their clam chowder and chicken sometime. They have a handful of baked entrees now. They also have a tasty tropical fruit salad (mango, pineapple, papaya) which comes in at $1.25, about 1/3 of what you would pay at Whole Foods. They are open late (midnight Su-Th, 1am Fri/Sat). Service is fast and friendly, and the store appearance is surprisingly clean and professional for the neighborhood. The prices are more than reasonable but I don't feel that the food quality is high enough to justify the health risks that accompany regular patronage. read more

Choose from a variety of seafood or chicken, and they'll deep-fry it for you. Make sure to try their "1/2 Chicken in a bag" as well. You can also buy fresh fish to take home and cook as you please. Also, if there's seafood you want but don't see, ask for it a day in advance, and they'll get it fresh (I'm guessing at one of the Fulton St. fish markets) for you the next day. The fried clam strips (or rubber bands as my partner likes to call them) came in a paper bag that was lined with wax paper, with the sides rolled down for easy finger access to the tasty buggers. That told me everything-- these folks are experts, and they don't mess around with their fish, their fryers, or how they deliver the goods. The service was excellent too. The woman behind the counter knew her fish, was patient, and even had some recipe ideas for the walleye we eventually took away with us. There is a nice selection of spices and other seafood accoutrements, as well as frozen pies for dessert. Different from other reviews recommending fried oysters, I felt they were not fresh enough. Probably it was just one time thing, but I wouldn't try it any more. Coming in here you can smell the oil in the air. Love the Cajun catfish, nice flavorful kick to it get it every time I come here. If you leave this pace without it I would only feel sad for you. This place is the best place to get some freshly fried fish. Served in a paper brown bag, you know this place doesn't care about aesthetics. Because they believe in their product. You would order by weight, as low as half a pound. So you can get a good variety of seafood at your price. They also have tartar sauce and cocktail sauce in a bottle or in a ready to dip container. If you don't like fish, their fried scallops and shrimps are truly jumbo size here. Calamari is nice and tender. Fried chicken cook by order(also incredibly hot, you know it straight out of the fryer). It the best-fried fish shop in Chicago. They might only one worth mentioning but I easily argue they topped other seafood places in terms of fried food. read more

I hadn't had fried shrimp in about 30 years, so I ordered from here. It was delivered quickly and arrived hot. It was fried perfectly--no dripping oil but tasty. I wish the breading had a bit more seasoning to it but other than that, it was great. The shrimp were a good size and the portion was generous, along with the cocktail sauce. The driver was very polite and efficient--so many drivers have trouble figuring out the intercom at the gate (which is basic and easy). I would definitely order from the restaurant again. read more

The quality of the fish and shrimp here is okay, not great but better than most in the immediate area by far. If you get the shrimp, catfish or cod, they are very bland. Their sauces are okay and definitely use them! Their prices are pretty much on par with places like this. Their selection is pretty good. The service is friendly. Parking is easy because they have a small lot. My primary gripe with the place is that they don't put enough herbs and/or spices on their food. But in terms of the overall quality of the food, it's solid. If you want to compare this place to another that I believe is better, try Calumet Fisheries...but it completely on the other side of the city. (They won a James Beard award.) read more

This place still offers delicious fried seafood, but you better double check your order. They call out your order correctly, but when you get home you end up with 4 hush puppies instead of 4 scallops. Not an even trade at all. I called them and they were really great about making sure I got the 4 scallops for free next time. Well we just got home from picking up our order of scallops, an order of fries, 1 lb shrimp, and half a pound of cajun catfish. We sit our hungry butts down for a feast to find that we only got like 8 or 9 pieces of shrimp (half a pound) and our cajun catfish is actually hush puppies. Of course we got home and they were closed already. Thankfully we had ordered through GrubHub this time thinking that they'd get the order right this time. This was a terrible experience that could be prevented by us double checking our order, yes, but they pack our stuff up and call out our order. They need to make sure they are filling orders correctly. Maybe they hired new staff? Maybe they need more training? Whatever it is, it is really inconvenient to keep getting the order so wrong. We spent over $30 and got a little over $12 worth of food. Hopefully GrubHub can help us resolve this. UPDATE: Fish Keg contacted me and was understanding of the situation. They are working on resolving the matter with a partial refund for the food items we did not receive. I appreciate their excellent service when it comes to resolving these issues. I've been going to the Fish Keg for many years. They are open late at night which is a major attraction, and their fish is very fresh. There is no "fishy" smell in the store. They sell fresh fish and a variety of fish they will deep fry for you as you wait. I always get fried shrimp and fried scallops. I'd rate the scallops as 5-stars, the breading is thin and crisp but not crunchy. I don't like the batter they use on the shrimp as much; it's hard and crunchy, not so much to my liking. read more

I've been going to the Fish Keg for over 20 years and they continue to deliver a great old-school fresh and fried fish product. Skip the national brand joints with their deep fried bread and support an excellent local business. I am happy to report that though the business has been recently sold and is under new ownership almost nothing has changed. This is a strictly "to-go" shop and I stopped by this week for some fish nuggets and smelt and enjoyed it as much as ever. My brother-in-law is an avid boater from Cleveland and when he visits, the first thing he wants to do is go to the Fish Keg to pick-up our dinner. Then we take it home, rip open the little brown paper bags and have a family feast. BTW the fries, cole slaw and three bean salad are my favorite sides. I haven been here since the late 80's early 90's. I was never a fan but my husband liked the place until one day he ordered their potato salad and it was spoiled. After eating it he got very sick. When he told them about his exit he next day they didn't even try to compensate him for it. The least they could have done was offer him his money back for the bad potato salad. I love this place I really do. I been here since I was a toddler and the people there are excellent. But out of all the years I came there, I had one problem issue with my order that I wanted to address to the manager. I known him for years. I was displease with his attitude. He came off a bit aggressive. I was nicely trying to explain to him, but he kept cutting me off and not letting me finish my sentences. I ordered 1 pound of Shrimp through postmates at 5:15PM January 20th. I put a special note on the order stating that I wanted a half pound more of shrimp to my order. When the delivery guy came, I received only 1/2 pound of Shrimp. I tried to explain to the manager that I felt cheated out of my order because it's not what I ordered. I will even post the picture of my order as proof. The manager rudely hang up the phone on me and never let me finish what I was trying to tell him. So yeah that hurt buddy. I forgive you, but you could of not go on a temper tantrum on me over the phone. You should of handle it better. I want you to see and observe the picture closely so you will see that I'm not lying. I am dead serious. The manager told me that they don't deal with postmates, but yet your business is on the service. Interesting. This is why I always keep my receipts. For now I will take a break from Fish Keg. Please in the future talk kindly to customers, when one little problem go wrong. Long ago,perhaps 25 years or more I had some one being food over from fish keg. It was alright. Well tonight 11.17.17 I had a taste for some fish and chips and went there about 9 pm. (STRIKE ONE) everything is a la carte. (STRIKE TWO) This is not fish and chips,this is fish nuggets. (Not the same)These were not light golden brown but dark crunchy bull shit things OVER COOKED. (STRICK 3) french fries are not chips, french fries are French fries. Some thing along the lines of steak fries are chips. I wasnt impressed.
