Why should we go out of our way for something as common as fried shrimp, I thought. I couldn't have been more wrong. We showed up at Frank's on a Friday evening and the place was bustling. We'd already eaten quite a bit that day, so we just ordered four Chicago Gulf Shrimp ("seasoned with garlic"). They were ready about 10 minutes later and sure looked different from any fried shrimp I'd ever had. And my first bite told me they were also better than any fried shrimp I'd ever had. I can't really even describe them except to say they were mind blowing and so, so flavorful. They're also perfectly fried and irresistibly crisp, and the shrimp inside is the perfect texture and taste. I wish we had fried shrimp even remotely this good back home in Toronto. Franks shrimp hasn't changed! Well, actually, some things have. The location moved from Addison to Irving. Better parking situation. My go-to was always some regular or Chicago style shrimp with a side of fries. They changed their "fry style" from crinkle fries to straight fries. It really makes a huge different and the fry is just not as good anymore. They have great sides like mac & cheese bites that are tasty and jalapeño poppers. The scallops and oysters are really good too. I would try not to get so many fried sides along with whatever fried fish you're having, it can really be an overload! Prices a little steeper but well worth it for this tasty, quality fish! Their hot sauce is the bomb, too! read more

They cook everything fresh and will pack your food within minutes. It's great to chat up the chefs while waiting, they're very knowledgeable about their menu. I enjoy fried seafood, and they sell their stuff by the pound. I usually get a pound of shrimp to share. You must try their "Chicago Style Shrimp" paired with their homemade cocktail sauce. Hey I was very surprised how good the fried Shrimp were at this place Frank's fried shrimp house. Last night my wife decided she wanted garlic fried shrimp. I had no idea were to get these shrimp. I asked her where we were going to get these shrimp? And she said Frank's!!! I always wanted to try this place so we took a ride to the city. On the way I was looking over their website and found out the Chicago fried shrimp were garlic shrimp!!!! They close at 10:30pm we just made it in time. My husband and I have been loyal customers of Franks shrimp for 30 years. First at the Chicago location on Addison ave and then follow them to the Irving Park location. I must say we were a bit disappointed. Our shrimp was definitely over fried, and the chicken fillets were different much smaller and a bit dry. And I'm not sure, but I do believe the breading was different on both shrimp and chicken. It made me sad. I hope they go back to the original chicken, which was great and the shrimp of course the best thank you we will give it another chance. To be honest it's been almost 4 years since I went here since our order that we received today via Grubhub. This was one of my dad's favorite places for shrimp. I had a difficult time going back because this was the last place he asked for before he passed away. Today, I REALLY had a taste for shrimp and other seafood. So I told my wife to place a decent size order of a bunch of things No idea what happened to this place but it's really changed. For starters, the breading was much different. More like tempura. Light batter and a bit soggy. Then we tried the scallops. Completely overcooked and tasted like rubber. Probably the worst scallops I ever had in my life. The rest of our order (we got like 6-7 different things) was just ok. Lastly ...what happened to the sauce? It used to be very good. Now it's like a thicker bbq sauce than they had for so many years. Complete waste of over $80 My dad would be so upset now if he was still alive. The ONLY reason I didn't give it a one star was the clam strips and hush puppies were ok. Delicioso!! Fried seafood heaven that's closely convenient to home. I can't ask for anything better. The Chicago shrimp was off the chain! The seasoning on the batter was fire and it wasn't too overly breaded. Also got the scallops and that didn't disappoint either. This is mostly a take-out joint so the place is not too big. But there are stools alongside the wall if you did want to eat your food there. The service was also great. The lady was very friendly and helpful in helping my husband and I choose our portions and even gave us samples of all of their different sauces. So no cold, fishy seafood. The sauce that is available for the seafood is another amazing factor. I've been to other seafood restaurants, and the sauce is not that tasty.
