This review is strictly based on my interaction with the proprietor and NOT the food itself. I no longer eat meat other than seafood and I am not sure I would be at an event this gentleman caters but, I did really enjoy the open conversation. We discussed his truck, the general public and interactions with a business like his as well as the amount of prep involved to make this Bird fly. He was VERY open, very honest and genuine as can be. He struck me as someone that could be a great mentor for someone looking to get into this line of work, which I have been thinking long and hard about. A man who appeared to be the chef was extremely rude -- snapping at us when we asked simple questions about the menu, then shaking his head in annoyance and yelling "I don't have time for this!" like we were wasting his time during pickup. The Fix on Wheels does mostly private events (probably a testament to how good their burgers are), but you can see their schedule on their Facebook page and/or website, to try to catch them at an open-to-public stop; it's worth it, trust me bro. For a small operation with a massive line, and high quality of food, their service is great, but do expect some normal wait time when you see the lines. They also give back directly to the community: - during the peak of the pandemic, they fed the frontline nurses and doctors at various hospitals - they fed the writers and SAG AFTRA workers during the strike - they've fed teachers, firefighters during the wildfires, and so much more. I had the lunch special which was a cheese burger with fries and a drink, for $12. I didn't want the drink, but the lady at the window would not lower the price. So I took a chilled water. I got a chicken pesto sandwich. The sandwich looked great and tasted awful. Weird flavors. Acrid. Chicken was rubbery verging on under-cooked. I have no idea what they made the pesto with, but it didn't taste like basil, parmesan or pine nuts. I tossed it in the waste basket at work and then emptied it out cuz it smelled so odd. In response to the owner, I didn't see your reply till the following day. Sorry I missed it and I appreciate your effort to make things right. And in response to your comment about nuts, no I wasn't specifically looking for nuts in your pesto. I was simply remarking on how your version of pesto, in my opinion, bears zero resemblance to what one usually expects from basic pesto. Incredibly Good! I've been in the film/tv business for over 20 years so i've eaten off of a ton of gourmet food trucks in my time. I've been to the conventions in town and many food truck block party type events as well. The Fix On Wheels is by far the most satisfying and scrumptious food experience on four wheels that I have ever experienced. The chef John is a master with his grill and I consistently follow them around town whenever I can line up where they are gonna be with where I'm gonna be. I'll even go out of my way if they are posted up somewhat nearby. I have recommended them to friends and taken many friends to them myself. In a way I'm a bit disappointed that I experienced The Fix on Wheels before the actual brick and mortar spot in Silver Lake given it's no easy task to replicate proper kitchen food with a food truck. Having said that, I'd heard too many great things about The Fix to pass up their food truck when it sprung up in a spot in front of my office typically frequented by a mediocre rotation. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? The folks in the truck couldn't have been any nicer, and they were quick to offer free samples of various menu items while explaining what made them different. I was equally impressed upon being asked how I wanted my burger cooked, as it was made clear that everything was truly made to order from scratch. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? My Fix on Fire burger ran me $11.00, which is perfectly reasonable given this had two full quarter pound patties. It didn't come with fries, but anything of substance under $15.00 from a food truck is essentially good value these days. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? My Fix on Fire burger was good, but it didn't blow me away. You had a ton of fresh ground beef in this equation with sizable portions of cheese, spicy mayo, and fresh peppers sandwiched between a good sized bun, but the patties themselves lacked the flavor that in my opinion makes a great burger these days. Said differently, if I were just eating these burger patties without the peripherals they would have tasted like any other generic patty, and they relied on the toppings to bring the burger together. On the topic of those toppings, the peppers were fiery and had excellent flavor, but the spicy mayo or whatever the additional sauce was didn't do much for me. A good burger, but not out of this world. Single Star. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? I liked the Fix on Fire, and there's no doubt the Fix on Wheels truck is going to do just fine, but I need to visit The Fix's brick and mortar location before I go recommending it above some of my favorite burger spots in LA. I saw this really nice looking truck today (graphics really standout) in front of the Bank of America bldg again DTLA CBD. Everything looked delicious, so I chose the Silverlake Burger(2 patties, cheddar, onion, tomatoes,1000 island dressing) and the Hebrew National hot dog(cheese, onions, bacon etc). Both tasted great and are very large. The garlic fries are amazing-perfectly crispy with a nice dusting of garlic and even pieces of fresh garlic nestled in the fries. The service is very fast and courteous which is a big plus for the office lunchtime rush. Prices are very reasonable for the excellent quality. One of the best trucks I've been to in DTLA makes me want to try their brick and mortar location soon in Silverlake. read more
