I brought two watches in to replace the battery, one of which was a mid-range Timex heart rate monitor. I waited my turn, was the only person in the shop and received good service - he even set the date/time on both watches. Swimming a couple days later I noticed water had gotten into the watch. Upon visual inspection it's evident the back plate had not been properly seated on one side. I returned to The Fixery without expectations, only hope for a solution; before I finished explaining my situation he pointed to a sign which effectively stated "we do not warranty water resistant watches." My point to him was he changed my battery hence I would expect any issues relating to water leaking into the watch would not be the result of him but rather a failed part on the watch. He again pointed to the sign and told me he had no responsibility. He asked for the watch said he'd take a look at it (again pointing to the sign). As he went to the back I asked him to look at the watch backing and note that the plate had not been reseated since it would not be visible once the back was off. At that point he returned, gave me the watch and told me to leave. Glancing at him as I was leaving he was smiling and shaking his head. Apparently he didn't quite make the connection that as a result of his carelessness (and my trust in his competence) I would now have to replace a $150 watch - after all, he does have a sign denying accountability (for his work?). While I wasn't sure what to expect, denying his responsibility in my situation and refusing me service was a surprise. I didn't raise my voice, I wasn't emotional, and I simply was trying to have him acknowledge the watch failed as a result of his service. Perhaps an "oops" let me take a look, an apology, an acknowledgement that the plate was indeed not properly put back on and THEN an acknowledgement that even in situations where he's at fault, water resistant watches are not covered. Perhaps, in a top tier watch shop the owner might even help me replace/purchase a new watch at cost or with a price break available only to dealers. Based on other one star reviews for The Fixery, it's clear this is not a new issue for him. Whether a mantle clock or inexpensive watch, I recommend taking your watch to someone who takes pride in their work and who values repeat business. read more

Asking this guy to fix my watch was the single worst retail experience of my life. I have a nice watch, a vintage Omega. The stem/crown broke and needed to be replaced. I brought it in and he said they don't make the parts to replace what was broken anymore. THIS IS A LIE--an actual watchmaker has since fixed the watch. He said he can't fix it so it is perfect, but he can put something together so it will work well. Believing him that real parts were not available, I let him have it, then went home to look on . . . the internet. There is a huge market of collectors on the internet, and limitless used parts floating around, in addition to several places online that sell actual replacement parts. I called to ask him if it would be helpful to him if I searched around online to see if I could find the replacement part. He told me this is exactly why he told me that he would do it his way, because it is just more trouble than it's worth to have me looking for parts too. I said I only called to ASK him WHETHER it would be helpful. He said, you should just come back and get your watch. If you find the part for it, then you can bring it back. WHAT THE F---? I said, I don't need take it back, I'm only asking IF IT WOULD BE HELPFUL for me to try to find the piece. He said, see, I've already spent more time on this phone call than it is worth to me. I said, I know, I agree, I asked you a simple yes or no question and you've been arguing with me for ten minutes now. All you had to do was answer my question and we'd be done. I said I would look for the replacement part, but I need to know the caliber of the movement. He said, see, now you're using words that aren't watchmaker terms. That's exactly why I didn't want to get involved with this, because now you're trying to do my job and you don't even know the right terms, you should just come in and get the watch. Are you ready for this? "Caliber" IS THE RIGHT WORD. It is the word Omega uses. It is the word EVERY watch company uses. The guy lied to me again! Here is the question for you, is he so insanely incompetent he doesn't even know what "caliber" of a watch means? Or is he the most outrageous liar you've ever encountered? It would be like going into a car mechanic to have the oil changed, and you ask him if he'd like you to get the oil for him, and you say, "what weight should I buy?" And he says, see, now you're using consumer words that aren't the same words that auto mechanics use. Oil weight? What is that? It was a truly astonishing experience. This is a man who is so awful he really deserves to lose business because of it. Please find somewhere else to go. (I'm not sure I made this clear. He could easily have said to me, "I wouldn't be comfortable working on that watch," and I would have been happy with his honesty and come in again for repairs to our other watches. What he did instead was insult me and lie to me in order to mask his own incompetence. That is really unacceptable.) read more

After reading the other Yelp reviews, I stopped in here to get my watch battery replaced. I had the same experience as Kat P.--friendly, quick (after a bit of a wait because of the people in front of me in line), and cheap (under $10). I needed my Grandpa's family heirloom watch from the '50's repaired... so I thought. The friendly employee opened it up, said it was in good working condition, and politely explained to me that I had to just wind it up. I figured it was automatic, but it turns out it has to be manually wound. I asked him how much I owed him, and he said it was free of charge. Thank you Fixery for all of your help. Great place. We dropped off 6 watches for battery replacements. Three included a Tag, Ebel and Rado. Some places will not replace batteries in these watches - the Ebel in particular. No problems here and I got the feeling the owner really knows watches. I'll stop back here for any type of repair or service. read more

This business shows how things must be done in an ideal world. I went there about five years ago (It was the same bearded man who works there today, let us call him the owner), because the mechanism that let me adjust the calendar on my wristwatch stopped working. The owner opened my watch, immediately saw that some little connector was broken and was willing to replace it, but suggested that I save the money and adjust the calendar, when needed, the old-fashioned way: turning the hour hand back and forth through the 9-12 sector, when the hand advances the calendar one day on clockwise movement. The owner was very convincing, and it was clear to me that he knew what he was doing. I had a similar experience with him today, but that is another story. read more

I went to The Fixery in Southdale Mall to get a couple links taken out of my watch. There was no wait so the man was able to get it done right away. I walked around the mall and came back an hour or so later to get one link put back in for a better fit and he did it, no questions asked. When it comes to watches I would recommend this place over a jewelry store. read more

I own a Swiss Army wristwatch, and it needs the battery replaced annually. It's difficult to find a place that will even touch these watches, including Macy's and other fine jewelry stores. If I do find a jeweler who will accept the watch, they just send it out and it has cost me a fortune. I was ready to chuck the watch and buy a Timex. However, by researching online, I discovered The Fixery in Highland Park. I stopped in there today and was extremely pleased with their friendly, fast, efficient service. It took about 2 minutes to change the battery and cost less than $10. Believe me when I tell you that I've paid upwards of $50 each year at jewelry stores to have the battery changed, and I've had to wait up to two weeks to get my watch back. I had an expensive ceramic watch with a broken link in the band. Everything I read online made it sound hopeless and not repairable. My husband took it to The Fixery and within 20 minutes, the man there had switched links around, removed the broken one and sized it for 15 dollars! Amazing! Highly recommended! read more
