We had a great time fishing Whiskeytown Lake with Kirk! My husband and some of his friends have fished with Kirk a few times, but it was the first time my son and I were able to go. It was a beautiful day, and we caught quite a few Kokanee Salmon. Kirk was a wonderful guide, very easy going, talkative and extremely patient with both myself and my 6 year old (neither of us are experienced fisherman!), Kirk made sure we all had opportunities to reel in some fish. We stopped at a little cove for a break and to let the dogs roam around (Kirk allowed us to bring our dog, and he brought his 2 dogs as well). Kirk noticed that our son was having a blast playing in the water, so he told us we could hang out there as long as we wanted, and we would get back to fishing whenever we were ready. When we got back to shore, Kirk and my husband cleaned and bagged everything, so we went home with some really nice filets! We booked a trip with Kirk at Shasta Lake to catch Bass. We are all very experienced anglers. The good part is we caught fish, but we are accustomed to always catching fish. The bad part was his trolling motor did not work and he had no working electronics. He said both the transducers on the boat were broken at a boat ramp the week before. We understand that accidents happen, but if you're a professional you fix them before the next charter. He used a 9.9 hp kicker motor to move us around fishing spots. Of course, as experienced anglers, we knew that every time he fired that motor up any large fish would scatter. We also had a female angler with us that he kept calling, honey. Fortunately, she just blew it off, but he should realize that is somewhat chauvinistic. Also, he kept asking her if she needed help and almost implying that she was not competent in what she was doing. She's rated as a master angler in Idaho and has won many tournaments. Overall, we caught approximately 50 fish, which sounds like a lot, but I would call that a typical day for the three of us. read more

I called Kirk last minute to book a weekend appointment. I was lucky and he was able to fit me in. We drove up on the same morning, from Sacramento. We were on the water at around 830 am, with our guide, Justin. Justin was very friendly, knowlegable, and patient, and he taught me and my brother how to use a fly rod setup, for the first time. The day started out slow, and wasn't red hot, but Justin was able to put us on some beautiful fish, including a native Rainbow weighing approximately 8 lbs. I highly recommend using Sac River Guide for your river charters. I will be using them again in the future. read more

The folks at Sacriverguide took us out for a fly fishing drift trip on the Lower Sacramento. Their guide, Forest, was a super knowledgeable and friendly guide. He picked us up in a nice clean truck in the morning and was on time, actually a little early. It was nice to see that his boat was as nice and clean as his truck. Forest had us on fish from the very first casts. He definitely knows the river and what the trout are looking for. We caught 15/20 fish each. Most of the fish were 16-20 inches. We had one 25"/8lb monster that got away after a long fight.....yeah, I know---the one that got away. Forest was extremely patient and did a great job of teaching my friend how to fly fish. Lunch was sandwiches, chips, cookies and sodas. Bring your own booze. I used to go through the a Fly Shop, but got sick of their high prices and dirty boats,etc. I won't go back to the Fly Shop now that I found Sac River Guides. read more

Sacramento River Guides is one of the least professional guides on the river. Last weekend Kirk got distracted while untangling tangled lines as his jet boat idled slowly up-river. Kirk was not paying attention and nearly ran into a drift boat with fly fishermen and the drift boat guide had to holler to him to pay attention and had to row out of Kirk's way to avoid getting hit by Kirk's jet boat. Later Kirk charged down the river to swamp the drift boat with his wake. Very childish and unprofessional and it was really awkward to see a guide behave this way. I have had Yelp for years and have never wrote a review at all but i felt the need to share my experience- We had Kirk as our guide. I went with my husband, an experienced fisherman as well as 3 other men who are experienced, and another woman (myself and the other woman were not experienced). It was fun at first, we were catching Salmon, and then a few hours in Kirk became suuuper passive aggressive and had very strange and unprofessional behavior. At one point he completely stopped interacting with us and my husband was acting as the guide- baiting and casting all of our rods. We paid over $1000 for this experience we did not receive. At one point my husband was helping me bait my rod, and asked Kirk if he could hold his. Kirk crosses his arms and said "ugh I don't want it!" He also kept saying to our friend, an experienced fisherman "that's not how you set the hook!" I could go on and on about the super random comments like that all day to where it was sooo uncomfortable and awkward, and everybody was over fishing and Kirk. I'm not sure what snapped in him to act this way, however he did kind of sort of apologize for his behavior, stating "sorry if i came across a little grouchy today." But the same breath he stated- i can fillet the fish you caught but i keep all the roe as payment... so i mean clearly he wasn't that sorry. I'm giving this review as a 2 because most of us did catch fish! And i did have fun because i was in a boat with all of my friends. But if i had my child with me, which he said he does take children, i would not recommend him for that. And like i said we were all over him and wanted to get off that damn boat. Just want to let people know what they are going to be dealing with before forking out their hard earned money. read more

We did a trip this week with Dino, great experience! I'm amazed how many people are not even aware of the fishing opportunities on the Sac River. Dino is friendly, knowledgeable and got us on the fish. We will definitely do this again. My advice: bring lots of sunblock, hats, etc. as it gets really warm and you don't want sunburn to take away your focus on fish! read more

Booked a fishing trip on Shasta Lake for a fun activity on our anniversary house boat trip. Set it up with Kirk and he said Justin would pick us up at the cove where we were at early in the morning. Justin was great and got us on the fish quickly. It was great to watch my wife catch her first large fish. I think she is hooked. It's all about money with these guys! As a frequent user of fishing guides, I expect fair treatment and honest no BS outlook if I am going to be put on the fish. When I first when out with Kirk three years ago, he put me on his own boat and we caught fish! however last year was totally different. Instead of hello, hi how are you? I got "I need your credit card #" no warm atmosphere! Then when we hit the water we were literally surrounded by dead 30 pound floaters (dead fish) There were no fresh fish as I paid to catch! I recently went salmon fishing on the Sacramento River to a well known local spot known as the "barge hole", it was full of local fisherman and fishing guides alike. It was about 7:30 in the morning, and I had just got my line wet. I was happy and excited to see what the river would bring me. There were approximately 10-12 other fishing boats in the same area as me, which meant competition. Everyone was polite and had great River/ fishing etiquette! EXCEPT for Sacramento River guide!!!!! He was extremely rude and unprofessional. He started yelling at us, and threatening to call his "buddy" to come meet us, (which to me sounded like a threat to get in a fight), all because he didn't like the way we looked at him, it was so totally unexpected and I thought he was joking at first. When I realized he was serious, I couldn't believe it. How unprofessional and rude. Everyone obviously comes here to fish, you are not the only one, and you certainly do not own the River! I bet the poor people the hired him had a miserable day, and if it were me.......... Never Ever, will I recommend Sac River Guide and I urge you to seriously think about your upcoming fishing trip.
