What a disappointment. This used to be my "go to" for food and health supplements, but no more. The customer service has really gone downhill (rude and unhelpful and suspicious staff) and they're selling food that is NOT FRESH. Let me start with those sunflower and date cookies that are supposed to be "freshly baked." Not so. Stale as can be! And the store refused to take them back or offer a refund or store credit. The "organic" white and yellow popcorn. STALE! I tried 3 different methods of popping with stale results all 3 times. Staff's reaction? Defensiveness and no offer of a reasonable solution...had to "match" the price to another item of the same value. Ridiculous. Honestly, I thought I was in Farmer Joe's for a minute! Finally, that bulk "large flake" yeast can be sketchy looking. Strange dark blotches of who-knows-what mixed in. This I did not take back...I just threw it out. Never shopping there again...I detest rude and unfriendly staff at a business where I'm spending my sparse, fixed income money! read more

Vast selection of products: bulk items priced well; some other items are priced higher than surrounding places (i.e. Farmer Joe's on MacArthur). The customer service could use improvement. Today I was treated very poorly by a female sales person with glasses. Having little experience with how the store works (customers weight their own items before approaching the cashier for payment and confusion regarding the coffee pricing which was unclear to me). She lead me around a corner where no one could hear her and was very rude to me. I left the store without making a purchase. When products are average and service is good - I always return. When products are good but I am treated poorly - it doesn't work for me. It's unfortunate because the store could be very useful to me. read more

Juan and Melton took such great care of me my last visit. They are patient and helpful in locating, weighing and packaging everything I've come for that is in stock. This is becoming my favorite store in all of Alameda County. My go to for my herbs as I'm still building my Apothecary and almost complete. I'll still use them for restocks. They have so many herbs from A-Z. It's a privilege to be able to drive and get in person. I'm hearing from other fellow herbalists their areas do not have a store like mine. I've started bringing my own Mason Jars or purchase their 9 oz jars if additional are needed. I usually call ahead of time to see what's in stock and prepare for what I need to bring. When you need spices, this is the place to go to. Rather than spending a few dollars if not more for one spice jar at the supermarket, you can come here and determine how little or how much of spices you need. If you have a recipe that calls for a spice that you never use or seldom use you can just get the amount that you need. How easy is that? The service is really good there. Oh Food Mill how I love your baked bars. Years ago, a friend introduced me to the date nut bar from here. Luckily they were also sold at the old Rite Aid on Broadway which satisfied my cravings but this is long gone. Now, whenever my travels take me down 580, I make a special stop for the bars. Today, they had this generous bags of bits for $3.29 which is the same price as the bagged cookies and bars. I consider this a deal as there are multiple flavors in here in addition to the date nut. There is oatmeal and honey too. I love the spiciness and softness of these cookies. And, they are a local natural food store in Oakland. We lived in that area and we would go there to get all types of vitamins, different types of medication's as well as grains food you name it you just have to go see for yourself this place has a little bit of everything that you need T different types of flower vanilla differenttypes of spices types of facial soap lotions, hand creams you name it. I don't have any pictures at the moment because I haven't been there in a while but I know this area very well. Check it out matter fact I need to go over by there this weekend to grab me a few things for this cold season, echinacea, etc.. and I almost forgot to mention you can grind up your coffee as well. I am happy that I was finally able to go to The Food Mill yesterday. I have been searching for something to help my menopausal symptoms. I read about Yam Cream. He recommended Wild Yam Root capsules. I really hope they help!! I also eat a spoonful of sea moss daily in the gel form, and he recommended Organic Dulse Leaves, which taste great(like the seaweed snack) I could go on and on about this store! I want to thank you for offering grocery delivery from your store thru DoorDash(DD). I work 8-12 hours a day, and usually don't have time to do serious grocery shopping. Also, with Covid-19 still swirling around, I stay away from big supermarkets. I like to shop in small markets and neighborhood stores. I have had bad experiences in the past with home grocery delivery, so I felt I was taking a chance having DD bring me fruits and veggies. It turned out to be a good decision. I received good quality melons, oranges, tomatoes and avocados. Not too ripe, but that's the way I want them. I don't want ripe fruit that I have to rush to eat or throw away. If I want ripe, I'll go to a local market. But their prices aren't as low as yours. The order took about 45 mins to fill, and then the DD driver was on his way. Love this place. You can bring your own containers for the bulk foods section. No more plastic packaging! The bulk foods section has oats, rices of all kinds, spices, turmeric, salt, pepper, laundry detergent, nut butter, honey etc. There are also candies and things like chocolate pretzels that are sold in bulk. The grocery store has more traditional aisles as well with pre-packaged, pre-portioned foods. The weighing of the bulk items is very easy. You add as much as you want to your container and there's a scale that shows you how to weigh your item. A sticker is printed with the price so that the cashier knows how to ring you up when you are done with your shopping trip. read more

Bought a tofu press but needed beans, Berkeley Bowl had a line too long I deemed. Yelp directed me to the Food Mill instead, So I turned around and to there I head. Small line, but they take COVID seriously the wait flew by quite mysteriously. Inside, my god, so many healthy snacks and of course TONS of bulk bins in the back. During COVID, I've tried to stay out of big stores that have hundreds of people and staff passing through daily. The Food Mill, in addition to being perhaps the oldest market in Oakland (1933) is about as COVID safe a place as you'll find. They provide, and require, plastic gloves and everyone is masked. The selection is no Berkeley Bowl, but you can get dry bulk products from bins in the same way. The co-located Grand Bakery is excellent. There's a small selection of fresh produce and frozen meats. Never crowded. read more

love going to the Food Mill. It reminds me of my favorite co-op in Ukiah. They have lots of grains, nuts, and seeds in bulk. They also have organic vegetables and fruits that are in season. They also bake their own cookies and sell them at a reasonable price. They also have a section with books on health - - like old fashion health food stores. At the Food Mill, they have plastic gloves that you can wear, and hand sanitizer available. Covid has made it so the food mill is short on a lot of ingredients. I went there specifically to get herbs to make homemade root beer. Two of the ingredients I needed, weren't available. I talked with someone in the store and he said that Covid has hit a lot of their distributors very hard, and so they are out of certain items. read more

I have visited The Food Mill a few times since my last review. Firstly, I'm SO glad they are open, as there is no better time to supplement our immune systems. The staff is helpful & very knowledgeable. They have a comprehensive selection of health supplements. I'm pleased that they always have what I need in the way of herbs & vitamins, and the staff knows exactly where everything is, and a wealth of info about the products they carry, which is so rare nowadays. I'm very happy they carry Grand Bakery products. I miss Grand Bakery, so happy I can still get fresh bagels, etc. I also love my senior discount (55+)! read more

I have been meaning to come here for the longest time. I finally had multiple containers empty that needed rice, oatmeal and flour so today was the day! Love the little parking lot off to the side - super convenient. The guy in the bulk area was very helpful in assisting me with the scales and how to weigh my containers first and keep track of the bin numbers. There is a lot to take in even though the space is not huge. Tons of spices, which I was not expecting and an area just for fresh produce. The prices are on par with the chain super markets but if your goal, like mine, is to reduce the amount of plastic packaging brought home this is worth the side trip. read more

My family has been going to The Food Mill for as long as I can remember. Both of my grandmothers went. The staff are knowledgeable and you can find so much there not found anywhere else. I buy unique teas and supplements there (black seed oil and capsules, refrigerated sea moss, soursop capsules, oregano oil, etc) as well as health foods. They even carry dried coconut milk so you can rehydrate and drink or add to smoothies however you like! I am so glad that they have survived for almost 100 years! This store has been a staple in my life since I was a little kid. I never really understood how much of an impact it was until people started to eat "healthy". As a cooking instructor there are stores that i visit and adore that others would simply pass by. The Food Mill is a treasure. The range of bulk foods, oils, honey, etc., is simply mind blowing. It's the Rainbow Foods of the East Bay in my opinion. Currently we are developing recipes for low carb snacks and guess who has all the ingredients under one roof in bulk? Yep, it's all here. Great little health food store up in the Laurel district of Oakland that has been serving the community for quite a few years.. You can find supplements, herbal alternatives to meds, bulk flours,grains,fruit,etc. all in bins sold by the pound so if you need that random baking flour ingredient you can get just the amount you need here. Gotta love "00" pizza flour for $1.19 a lb... Way cheaper than I have seen anywhere else! The crew is here is helpful and can answer pretty much any question you may have regarding their products.
