Discount City has been around for over 25-30 years! It was here when I rented a studio apt around the corner back in the 90's. I still come here to buy cheap stuff, and I don't expect it to last forever. On a Monday, I dropped by to shop for drain stoppers. This store has a little bit of everything. Way in the back they have a small grocery area with coolers, freezers, and sacks of rice. They have aisles of canned foods, HABA (health and beauty), stationery, and cheap hardware. Up front, they have a huge selection of balloon designs. Also, incense and candles. Why 3-stars? Narrow aisles and the smell of urine. Your aisles are narrow. Then some are made very narrow by having merchandise boxes stacked on the floor. Someone in a wheelchair will have a problem. Also, your store isn't clean. The checkout area smells like someone used it for a bathroom. Who the heck pees on the floor in a store? But if you're looking for something at a low price, come try Discount City. This locally-owned discount store has been around for decades. I used to go here more often for homegoods supplies when I lived down the street from this place. Was back in this part of Alameda again and decided to have a look. Was pleasantly surprised to see they now have an expanded section and area for asian/middle eastern foods: dry/canned goods and refrigerated items too. Their newer grocery section in the back with asian (mostly Filipino) and middle eastern foods is decent sized. They also sell some pantry stable fruits/veggies (garlic/onions/bananas/avocados etc), eggs, milk, tofu etc. They also sell lottery tickets here too. If there was only no stars. Just wanted to share that while I parked on the side of Discount City on Webster, I got yelled at by someone that said he was the owner. He wanted me to move my car and said I parked in employee parking when nothing was marked. I even said it's not marked anywhere but he continued to yell at me for a few minutes. I told him that I'll be really fast but then, he continued demanding I move and ended with saying "this is my parking lot and my store so move". I told him I'm going to move and not come back. Great place for cheap items and there is a wide array of things here. From balloons, highlighters, laundry bags, acne cream, eggs, chips, candy and other fresh produce -- we are happy to have stumbled upon this place last week. We've already been back to grab some more things because the prices are reasonable and the items are well-organized. It takes the place of a Dollar tree or Walmart and there's such a wide array of things like clocks, bathroom mats, kitchen supplies that you cannot go wrong here because there is probably something they have that is on your shopping list here. There's also a pretty big parking lot here for the area and it seems to be a family-owned place with kids around helping their fathers with the store and keeping them occupied. read more

I have shopped at this store several times b/c it's convenient, they carry a lot of useful things, and I prefer to support a small local business. However, the last two times I was in the store, the guy behind the counter (owner?) was running around the store with his mask dangling, despite the COVID-19 mask mandate. Two of his employees weren't even carrying masks. When checking out, I asked the guy behind the counter (owner?) to put his mask on and he did, but then when I mentioned something to the bare-faced young man who worked there, he became nasty and sarcastic and said "i'm vaccinated, I don't have to wear a mask" and some other insulting things. I won't shop here again, they lost a customer b/c of this young guy's selfish, insulting attitude and the owner's lack of care in following mandated public health rules. At least at dollar tree and Daiso the staff wears masks like they're supposed to. read more

I walked inside today to look for discounted items to put inside stocking stuffers and I walked in with my extra large grocery cart to go shopping... After purchasing $25 worth of discount goods here ... the teller says, Do you want to pay for the cart too and I looked confused because that my own cart I walked inside with and it was embarrassing because he was accusing me of trying to take a cart that wasn't even there's... that was really messed up! I used to be a regular dedicated customer of this place. But once they charged me obviously the wrong price, I got very disappointed. My average visit was under $10 and they overcharged me for only ¢30 - ¢40 but that's not the amount, that's the fact! And this happened quite a number of times with me, even though I believed it was done by error. Last time when I immediately approached the cashier (not friendly at all) and explained that I was charged he wrong price, he started arguing with me! That's beyond ridiculous! Yes, he gave me back my ¢30 or something but I don't wish to deal with that anymore! A stable business is an honest business -- that's Economics/Political Science majors at UC Berkeley tells you. We run a food truck and this weekend we were parked right in front of this store. We needed some supplies here and there. Milk, spoons, paper towels, cleaning supplies etc and this place had it all. The staff is super friendly and the prices were very reasonable as well. If we do more events here we hope to be parked in front of this store again. They have it all!!! read more

Discount City is a simple discount store, similar to Dollar Tree & 99 Cents Only Stores. The products are very similar to those types of stores and they even have fresh produce here! While browsing through the store, not everything may be 99 Cents but, there are still some stuff that are relatively cheap. The store in general is pretty big for a discount type of store. The aisles are pretty wide, so it's not cramped up like other retail stores. They have a few shopping carts in the store for you to use but cannot be taken outside of the store. I'd probably suggest just grabbing a handbasket upon entry to use. There's a lot of stuff here at Discount City, so browse around, you just might find something you like at a reasonable price! Customer Service: One of the cashiers that acknowledged us, seemed pretty friendly. He saw us looking at the 2014 Calendars and told us how much they were (3 for $1) pretty good price. I love this place. I don't live in Alameda but I'm there regularly and I always stop in. The prices are great. They have such a variety from party supplies to food and household stuff. The cashier who works weekends (the only time I'm there) is a really sweet guy. He talks to everyone like they're the most important customer of day. I don't believe there is an Asian supermarket in Alameda, but this store carries most frequently used Asian noodles, condiments, snacks and frozen items. So, I've become quite the regular here at Discount City. Each time I go in, I find one more little gem at a hella cheap price. But, life is more than just good savings. Life is about experiences and observations. This weekend, I was in here getting keys made (yep, they do that too). Some guy comes up to the register with what appeared to be (and was) a crack pipe in his hand.. or at least a meth pipe or whatever the hell they are called. He wanted to get his money back because "the chick who was going to get him high bailed on him" (his words, not mine). There was a pause.. an odd silence filled the front of the store as the store clerks looked at each other, then me, then the old lady waiting in line...and I could see how conflicted they were to even admit to having sold it to him in the first place. I guess they wanted to avoid any problems.. and to be fair, the pipe was unused..totally clear. So, they told him he could get something in the store for $3 and exchange it, but no refund. The guy opted for some popsicles and bailed outta there. So, not only can you get every household item, every party item (including helium filled balloons), lighters, tampons, bathroom cleaner and an extra key made..you can also get crack pipes for $3 & witness the antics of those that partake in such activity. I love this store. It's the largest of all the dollar type stores. The party and mailing supplies selection is excellent.

Discount City sells cheap crackers, cheap cheese, cheap candles, cheap condoms and cheap pregnancy tests just in case. If you are not in the market for any of these (Okay, maybe just the cheese, sharp cheddar if they have it!), do check out the value on paper products (paper towels and toilet paper) and dish washing liquid. The meager produce selection is....adequate, but what's with the salad greens kept out of refrigeration? But seriously, good milk, cheese and eggs for sale here. Also, dry goods like rice and pasta and canned goods like beans and tuna. Discount City is an excellent place to stock up and test out a variety of hot sauces. The grocery selection is nice. Overall, a great store.... First off I go here a lot and I like the dudes there, they're pretty cool (they might seem a little stand-off-ish at first but they're pretty nice).... I'm a big 99 Cents Only Stores fan, and of course they have the upperhand being a chain store, so as you may have already guessed, I'm going to [slightly] complain about their prices being a little higher than 99's..... Basically add on anywhere from $.25 to $2 to the price of what you'd expect from 99.. But hey, some great things about this place are: - HUGE variety! - REASONABLE prices on most things (except food itms) - Great location (and it's near me!!! heheh) - Nice/helpful staff! - Open till a reasonable time (8:30pm I believe) I basically see it as they add a "convenience" fee to everything (instead of having to go into another city), though they'd be in trouble if 99 chain store opened up in Alameda... =X But, until that happens I'm definitely quite the fan and go here about once a week. read more

Ok I love this store. We live half a block away and have been in here at least once a week since we moved in 5 years ago. We don't have a car, so having a close by place to pick up staples like milk, eggs and TP is wonderful. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I think it's family owned and tun, but I'm not sure. On my lazy days I can call and ask if they have something in stock before I walk over. It's always a new adventure walking the aisles... besides the usual personal care, cleaning products, kitchen & bath paper products - they have an amazing array of other random things. Rugs, picture frames, Tupperware, dishes,pots & pans, vases, baby supplies, luggage, giant velvet paintings of Christ, small appliances like toasters and coffee pots, tools and more. It's a blessing when we run out of cat food or litter. They make cute keys... I got us all fun patterned keys as stocking stuffers. An entire aisle of ethnic food. A vast array of balloons and party supplies. They even have produce wich is hit-or-miss. Sometimes it's fresh and great and other times not so much. We bought a rolling cart there 4 years ago since we don't have a car.. it is wonderful for errands and shopping. It is very durable and held up great. I love stocking up at Christmas time, I get rolls of wrapping paper for $1! Gift bags - $1! Tissue paper, bows, boxes etc - $1! But my very favorite is their oddly specific greeting cards. "Condolences on the passing of your great-aunt" Happy birthday Stepmother" "Sorry for the death of your goldfish" Downsides - stuff can be cheap quality... but what do you expect when you buy a hammer for $1.29? Use common sense. And I really dislike their bags. Due to state law they can no longer give plastic bags, but they sell paper ones for 10¢. I try to bring reusable bags from home but sometimes I stop in on a whim. Problem is there is no regulation on bag quality, so they charge 10¢ for a 2¢ quality bag.
