Jill & Teresa were such lovely hostess here. They kindly seated me and my service baby and service was excellent. Everyone was genuinely friendly and soup of the day chicken veggie orzo soup was warm and delicious on this windy night. I also got a Rutherford Merlot from Sonoma Valley and everything was delicious! I'm glad we stopped by for a bite after scoping out the state park. Whilst staying at our favorite destination of Anza Borrego, my partner and I ALWAYS belly up to the Fox Den Bar inside La Casa del Zorro Resort. Upon arriving to the bar you can't help yourself from noticing the adorable and fun drunk foxes (and animal friends) mural. While we have heard various stories about the artist and its age (whether it was painted in the 1940s, '60s or some other time in history) it is memorable being one of San Diego County's oldest murals. The other reason we come to this quaint bar is to catch up with the fabulous bartender, Jeanie. She is always welcoming and full of stories--no matter how busy she is. Sometimes we have dinner in The Fox Bistro, other times we slouch at the bar. No matter what, I always begin--and highly recommend--the Borrego Flower which is made with Tito's vodka, locally grown ruby red grapefruit and a few other secret ingredients. While the bar menu appears pricey, the portions are huge. Not to mention, they have to truck almost everything in from a distance. The chicken wings (fried and massive in size) and quesadillas are our favorite choices for bar bites. All in all, this is one of our first stops when in Borrego Springs. read more

This is a fabulous little bar inside La Casa Del Zorro. I came here recently with some friends and we had the best time chatting with their fabulous staff and enjoying some tasty drinks. The bartenders here make a delicious drink and are so friendly and generous with their time. If you have a sweet tooth, make sure to order a slice of their flourless chocolate cake. The Mrs. and I stopped in at the Fox Den Bar today for a drinkipoo after an exciting visit to downtown Borrego Springs. We were staying at the La Casa del Zorro resort, which is where the Fox Den is located, and had to kill time while waiting for our room. We arrived around 3:15 and the bar wasn't busy. Jeanie was the bartender when we arrived. I ordered a Manhattan and the Mrs. had a coffee she never heard of before. Lol As the clock and our drinks rolled on to 4 p.m., the bar got really busy. Kim took over for Jeanie and was just as great. These two ladies know how to run their bar. The Fox Den Bar is very old school. The decor is simple. There is a Fox themed mural behind the bar, mid-century modern barstools, and a beautiful bar top. Fun little place to hang out for drinks and listen to live music. It is loud and crowded. Service was good and then not so good. One bartender was friendly and quick, the other seemed annoyed to be there and was short and abrupt. The musicians were great, CrossRoads, and the ambiance is fun. Second review: First night was amazing service and food. Ate indoors and listened to a great musician. Next night we ate by the pool and the prime rib was so fatty I could not eat it. The Fox Den would definitely be one of the reasons why I would want to have a habitat in the desert, even though I hate dry heat. Despite some of these negative reviews I still decided to dine at The Fox Den and I'm so glad that I did! Customer service was exceptional. Dan was fabulous at accommodating my date and I. He was very helpful in explaining the menu and recommending dishes. I absolutely loved how attentive he was and not in an over bearing manner either! From my understanding, the menu changes seasonally and we just so happen to get a brand new menu. I got the Mahi Mahi Morsels and apparently I was the first to order it! No pressure, right? Well, to simply put it, I used to live in Hawaii and hands down, BEST. MAHI. MAHI. EVER. Perfect blend of fish, rice, pico de gallo & asparagus! To top it off, they also had some tortilla (or maybe it was wonton?) garnish. So good! My date ordered the bacon and turkey sandwich with the infamous fox chips. A delectable choice on his behalf. And between the two of us, we shared a shrimp cocktail appetizer. Sauce was really great and the shrimp were ginormous. Dessert, we decided on the salted caramel pecan cheesecake that was served with a teeny bit of raspberry sauce. Yet again, perfect portions! Nicely done and compliments to their pastry chef, Debbie! We left The Fox Den incredibly full and satisfied. I will definitely be back to see what other tricks Chef Kurt has up his sleeve. Cute lounge and restaurant at the resort. We were staying here and didn't feel like going far for dinner. Service was nice; Manny was great! The food was good since it was convenient. I ordered the French dip and got cole slaw as my side. My husband ordered the chicken fried chicken (calories don't count on vacation, right?). ;). It was really crispy and juicy, and the mashed potatoes and veggies were good. My son opted for the hot dog off the kids menu ($7) and enjoyed it. Fortunately it wasn't a teeny tiny one since his appetite has been growing. The fries it came with were nice and crispy. My husband's beers were ice cold and served with a frosty mug, which he appreciated. My gin and tonic was a bit flat but the margarita I had after that was much more satisfying. Love this little bar as part of the Del Zorro resort. It rocks on Saturday night with live music. You can get the full menu in here and watch a game on one of their two tv's. The bartenders are fantastic, the first night we have a woman who made a mean Skinny Marg. Then Bob the second night who was also friendly and we chatted it up all evening. Interesting man and very kind who has had a career bartending. The Chilean Seabass was incredible. The favor was spot on and the sauce they serve with it had chunks of crab I think and was amazing. Creamy too. The Shrimp cocktail was a bit light for the price I expected large prawns but medium sized shrimp, about 4 were hanging aside of the glass. We also had the fried chicken which on Sundays is the Happy Hour special. They have HH on most night but it is only one certain dish each night. Very tasty. I never eat it ut it was good. Mashed potatoes were thick and smooth and the green beans were good. Their salads are huge. I had a Cesar Salad but it came with small chunks of chicken in it I think. I didn't order it but ok. Went with it. Dressing was good. So, if you stay here or somewhere close by, belly up to the bar and on the weekends, listen to music and chat up some friendly locals or out of towners. read more

This place was just okay. It struck me as more of a glorified diner than a restaurant at a fancy resort. I guess since it was off-season, maybe their menu is limited. I have to be gluten free and it seemed like most of the dishes had a bread component. For example, tacos were only fried fish tacos, no simple chicken or beef options for the tacos. Steaks came in the form of a steak sandwich. Etcetera. The first night, I had a shrimp appetizer: $12 for 4 shrimp. The shrimp were fine. Then I had the baby back rib special with mashed potatoes. The ribs were pretty dry-- they had been dry rubbed but had very little sauce, and the actual meat was dry. My husband had the steak sandwich topped with grilled onions, with fries on the side. The fries were pretty hard. The steak was good. For breakfast, we had the American style breakfast which was eggs, bacon or sausage, toast and potatoes. I had mine without toast and I think they gave my toast to my husband, because he got a plate with a huge pile of bread on it. The potatoes were great.The sausages weren't so good, neither of us cared for them. They were a bit sweet and had some spices that I didn't like-- not hot spice, but just some combination that hit me the wrong way. They did have a flourless chocolate cake, which was a little round thing of chocolate, almost like a dark chocolate custard consistency. The service was fantastic both times we ate in the dining room, very attentive. We also got food for lunch to take out and breakfast take out, and they even put alcohol into to-go cups for us. read more

We went here for our anniversary and because everything else was closed until fall season. Won't be returning. I'm not sure where our waitress went. She walked by our table after waiting for 10 min asking if anyone's helped us. Eventually brought our water and bread when I asked for it. Then she disappeared again. They have gotten SOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER! I really want to like La Casa del Zorro! It's beautiful, close to my house and has a decent menu. But the service is uneven at best, occasionally just lame. In the summer, we didn't expect much, but it hasn't improved now that it's high season. It's the little touches that make a great resort, and Zorro doesn't seem to get that. At the OTHER high end resort in town, they pack up your leftovers and decorate the box with a few flowers. At Casa del Zorro, they got my carry out order wrong, and graciously offered. .nothing. I had to insist that the rest of the order not be left under the heat lamp while the mistake was corrected. Glad I insisted because the correction took 30 minutes. No offers for an iced tea or any other small compensation, and not a very sincere apology either, they acted mildly annoyed that I couldn't just be happy with a Reuben instead of the sandwich we actually ordered I want this to be where our overflow guests can stay, but not at this level of service read more

We had a to -go order from the Fox Den whilst staying at Casa Del Zorro. I had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and broccoli. The fried chicken was tasty. I can tell they bread the chicken on site which is a must. It had good flavor and I would definitely order again. The gravy was ok. I feel the entree for the price should have come with soup or salad but not complaining. Hubby had the French dip which I thought was just ok compared to the fried chicken. The food was fair. We had meatloaf that lacked much taste. And we had roasted half "chicken". I believe it was a game hen. It was very small. The drumstick was the size of my thumb. It tasted DELICIOUS. The sour dough bread was great too. Service was extremely slow. Actually service was ok bit it took forever to get the food and the potatoes were cold by the time we received it. The next morning we ate there again and it took 20 minutes PLUS asking for our order to be taken before we were served more than water. No offer of coffee or drinks at all. Finally the hostess walked by and we asked for coffee. We each asked for crispy bacon and it was limp and fatty. The hash browns and eggs were cooked exactly to order and great. Just way too slow to EVER go back again. We go to Borrego frequently. read more

As beautiful as this place is the service is very poor. My partner and I were there with some friends for thanksgiving. We had a reservation and still had to wait an hour to get a table, they told us to sit down next to the fire place, they brought us drinks but we're not complementary. The waiters looked stressed and were running around like chickens without heads. They brought the wrong wine and left the bottle unopened! We thought it was a 3 course meal for a single price but apparently it wasn't. Finally our meal was served, but it was served cold! Not sure what's going on but they need more training for their staff or a better food manager. read more

Wow, it was bad. This is a pretty, out of the way restaurant that I haven't been to for 25 plus years. My husband ordered the pork special with apples. The microscopic portion came, along with cold vegetables and rolls mid way through the meal. My arugula steak salad was overdone, and (wait for it), NO Arugula. We had lunch at the Fox Den while exploring the Anza desert and it could not have been better. Dan, the bartender/server was a gracious host, friendly yet professional as were the rest of the staff at the Casa Del Zorro Resort. The ambience of the pub/restaurant brought back fond memories of when I lived in the UK, however I do not recall any finer pubs there with a beautiful pool and casita just outside. We ate at the Fox Den on Saturday night. That night there was a band at the pool. The food was pretty good and the drinks better. We had the shrimp cocktail for starters. I had the ahi salad, which was decent. For desert, we had the flan cake. Which was really really good. I highly recommend the flan. The service was excellent. They made sure we had lots of water, which is really important in the heat of July: at least for us coastal dwellers. Overall, we had a great experience and much fun. We asked about drinks but only ever got beer and wine menu. The wait staff knew nothing about the wine selection. We had breakfast at the Fox Den in the La Casa Del Zorro resort. We were not staying at the hotel, just passing through. The hotel manager walked us into the dining room and asked the hostess to show us the patio, in case we wanted to enjoy the outdoors. We decided it was too chilly for the patio and opted to eat inside. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The coffee was excellent! My husband had the protein (3 meat) omelet with hash browns and sour dough toast. I had the breakfast burrito with eggs, applewood smoked bacon and beans, and a side of very fresh fruit. Everything was well cooked, beautifully presented and quite tasty. I am so glad we stopped. This place has been on my list of places to visit for many years. When we last drove through this area about 4 years ago, the resort was closed after many years of operation. Then, I read it had been sold, refurbished and was once again open. It is a lovely and peaceful place in the middle of the desert!! So glad we finally got to eat there!! read more

This is a Borrego Springs 5 stars. It was probably more like a 4-4.5, but come expecting it to be a bit slow and the people to be just a bit different than you're accustomed to. With that, they go out of their way to make sure you have everything you want. I have no complaints! Our seating situation was a bit strange...they first tried to seat us in the room past the bar that had karaoke going on. We immediately asked to be moved and they accommodated by seating us in the little buffer dining room between the hostess stand and the upscale dining room called Butterfield. If I have one complaint, it's that they require slacks for this area. I don't really understand why my expensive jeans and nice button down dress shirt are considered less dressed up as someone wearing cheap khakis from Kohl's. As far as our food/drinks, everything was superb. We ordered drinks at the bar before we were seated, and they were happy to bring them to our table and let us order the same drinks during dinner. In our group, we all ordered off the Fox Den menu because prices were a bit cheaper and there were still plenty of good dinner options. We ordered the Ribeye, fettuccine Alfredo with salmon, and the scallops. We also ordered Caesar salads to start and they were very good. Don't miss out on this place if you are staying in Borrego or at La Casa Del Zorro. Perfect place for our dinner/drinks the night before golf at Rams Hill the next morning! read more

We visited Borrego Springs in the off-season and had a great stay at La Casa Del Zorro... Amazing customer service at The Cantina/Fox Den... The wait staff had an Old Vegas feel and were very helpful. The first night I had the Lamb special and the second night I had the Ribeye straight off the menu. Both were perfectly prepared and the sides were very flavorful. Also, I recommend the Bloody Mary... Great mix!... We are already planning our next trip to Borrego Springs and will be staying at La Casa Del Zorro again. read more

Breakfast came out quickly and was quite good (eggs benny & fresh fruit). I mentioned the huge desert flower seeking crowds to our waitress (Hi Lucy!!) and she told us a cute story about the last time there was such an epic post-rain bloom. She was a little girl and, as there are no fences around many desert homes, tourists were walking around her home with cameras photo'ing desert flowers... which sent her running scared to her mommy wondering what all these people were doing in 'her yard.' We were seated by the fireplace with a lovely fire going. Our Server was always near enough to notice if we needed anything but far enough away not to be intrusive. Our courses were served in a timely manner and each one was delicious. Please do try the baked cheese, baked garlic and grape tray. Terrible customer service means this place needs a major reboot. The bartenders at The Fox Den are beyond bad. Six people in the entire place and it took at least 5 minutes to even be acknowledged by one of two bartenders who were more concerned with how to use the computer bar system than customers. Then no friendly greeting, more time to figure out how to make a vodka soda with lime, forgetting whether it was lemon or lime in the meantime, and serve a beer, then another 5 minutes to slam a bill down, and another 5 minutes to figure out how to charge a credit card. I am very forgiving of overworked bar staff taking a while, but this was like a comedy parody. How could anyone hired as a bartender, much less 2 of them, be so poorly skilled? Hearsay is that this is standard treatment. With other options in Borrego Springs, why put up with this? read more
