We had our Thanksgiving dinner here. Considering the price at $90 per person, we were disappointed. The food quality just wasn't there. We all ordered the turkey dinner and my daughter was looking forward to the stuffing but it had pork sausage in it, so we couldn't eat it, we don't eat pork. It would have been nice if they could have made up some plain stuffing for us, but it's not that kind of place or experience. My mom's turkey didn't have gravy on it (they forgot), and we had to ask for dinner rolls (they forgot). Also for any vegetarians out there, there wasn't a single option on the menu. The soup to start was barely edible, and the pumpkin pie for dessert tasted like cheap store bought with artificial whipped topping. Practically inedible. If they're trying to cut corners, food quality isn't the place to do it! Service was friendly but inexperienced and awkward. My daughter had to ask for a fork, and our candle wasn't lit. Those little things an experienced server would notice. I'm actually surprised the staff is so poor considering the prices, they're getting good tips! The ambiance was nice however we were seated next to a door which led outside and it would slam every time a server went in and out. We had an absolutely phenomenal meal at The Fox Bistro during our stay at La Casa del Zorro! Our reservation was at 7:30pm, which seemed like a good time to wait out any crowds. Our service was prompt, and we loved the ambiance of sitting next to the outdoor fireplace with our dog. We started with a Brown Derby (not pictured) and a Coconut Margarita. I was a bit disappointed that the menu didn't mention my Margarita would be blended, but it was tasty nonetheless. Our appetizer of Cambozola cheese with chutney, roasted garlic, and nuts was absolutely TO DIE FOR! We still can't stop talking about it and we had this meal 5 days ago! Needless to say, we will be attempting to duplicate this spread at home. Our entrees of Grilled Salmon and the Portabello Wellington were quite delicious as well. To wrap up our meal, we enjoyed the Flourless Chocolate Orange Cake, and the Brûlée Cheesecake. I have to mention that I didn't taste any orange in the cake, but it was delicious all the same. Disappointing. For the high prices, I expected a lot better!Definitely not in line with the food quality or service. Steak lacked seasoning and flavor. I was given the wrong order too. And let's not even talk about the mashed potatoes..absolutely flat, zero flavor as well. The butter for the rolls was cheap, low quality. It's all in the details and this "bistro" is lacking. I could get better food at Carlees to be honest, and for a better price. As for the service, the elderly waitress was nice; however, she did mess up our plates...no big deal (at first) but when she mistakenly handed my order to mom, the waitress intervened and said "no, no your orders are correct" and motioned us to keep our own plates. I was a little annoyed but trusted her and we proceeded to eat the plates she handed us. We realized less than a 1/4 of the way into our steaks that she did get our plates wrong. She had given me a well-done, hard-as-a-rock steak when I had ordered medium well. At this point, I was beyond annoyed. Needless to say, we will not be returning. I do not recommend!! read more

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night & decided to order take-out from the restaurant downstairs since we didn't want to leave the premises for dinner. They don't have room service during covid so we picked it up after they called our room. Ordered: 1) Wild mushroom risotto - this was good 2) Fried chicken - decent but chicken was not crunchy anymore when we ate it 3) Vegetable soup - my husband really liked this soup 4) Half rack of baby back ribs - the best entree we ordered tonight 5) Shrimp cocktail - 4 jumbo shrimps with some slices of avocado & cocktail sauce , good! Prices are expensive but we felt full and the meal was tasty. Got to eat it in the safety of our own hotel room! read more

Rack of Lamb was very good but the sides were terrible. Potatoes were cold and tasted like cheap instant potatoes. The carrots were hard. The shrimp scampi was meager with far too much garlic. The pasta was homemade and very good. Again service was lacking. We requested the bus boy find our server to bring us the check and we waited. She dropped the check and disappeared and we waited. I have eaten at the Fox Bistro, located in the La Casa del Zorro hotel several times. It has traditionally been very good. However, I think the restaurant has faltered in the last year. I called for a reservation between 6-7pm for 8 people and was told that they could do 8pm. Once we arrived we actually had 10 people and they accommodated us, which was nice. We showed up and were seated and everything started out well. Our waitress (Teresa) did a good job of taking drink orders and then our meal orders within about 15min. We got some bread and butter and our drinks. Looks good. In the meantime, several other tables were seated and their orders taken. At about the 1hr mark we received our soups & salads. Kind of a long time, but ok, we are a big party. It was at the 2hr mark that we finally received our meals. Before that, there were at least 4 other tables that were seated, ordered, ate, paid, and left. Keep in mind, these tables ordered after us. Now I get that they were probably busy, and maybe it is easier to cook a 4-top vs a 10 person party, but if you are that busy that it is going to take 2 hours to get food, why did you give me a reservation? Yeah, I get that we had 10 people instead of 8, but seriously, should 2 extra people mean we have to wait that long to get food? Could they have asked if we minded if meals came out as they were ready rather than all at once? The wait was ridiculous. We didn't leave the restaurant until after 10:30pm. Second issue was the food. I will give them credit that the bread & butter was good, and the clam chowder was excellent. Several others said their salads were good. However, that is where it ended. I ordered a new york strip for $39. What I received was 5/8" thick and sinewy and chewy. My potatoes were cold and some were not thoroughly cooked. For $39, I am expecting a great steak. What I got was on par with a $14 sirloin from Denny's. My uncle across from me ordered the blackened Mahi-Mahi. It was not "blackened" and came out cold and he said tasted funny. Really unappetizing. Several others at the table commented that the food was at best average. For the prices, I am expecting excellent cuisine that is prepared well. Lastly, this is the 2nd mediocre meal I have had at the Fox Bistro in the last 2 months. I know my options are limited, but it's just not worth it. read more

There is indoor and outdoor seating the la Casa Del Zorro resort is exceptional. The food quality is great. We have patronized Casa Del Zorro many times over the past decade and each time was not disappointed. Of course, ownership exchanged a couple of times, but the food has stayed consistently good. She kept saying that there were only 3 servers and things were slow and even after I said we were willing to wait she kept asking if we were staying at the resort. We ate here while staying at Casa del Zorro resort. Prices are high as expected for a resort restaurant, especially in a remote location where they have to truck everything in, but aside from that, we had a great meal: lentil soup, pasta bolognese, stuffed shells, beef short ribs. The rolls were fresh and piping hot, portions were generous, the short ribs were very tender, and everything was well seasoned without being too salty. Ambiance is old school clubby, mellow and not noisy. The food came out quickly and our waitstaff were helpful and courteous. The mixed drinks lacked a little pizzazz but the wine selection is extensive. read more

FINE CUISINE IN THE DESERT Borrego Springs has a surprising number of good places to eat, but the only one offering upscale dining is the Fox Bistro at La Casa del Zorro. The menu is diverse. The preparation and presentation vary but are generally very good -- rack of lamb was a little pricey but excellent, clam chowder was especially good, wild mushroom risotto a bit overcooked. Cocktails are well prepared, especially the traditional margarita. The room is comfortable but lacks atmosphere. And the service is excellent. Whether or not you're staying at the resort, and whether you're in town for a few days or just passing through, it's worth having a dinner here. read more

I've stayed at La Casa del Zorro a few times now, and I have enjoyed the Fox Bistro each time. It's nice to not have to drive into town to get a nice meal (not that town is far). The service has been very attentive and super friendly on my visits. Kevin was my server this week. They remember you when you walk in! The food has always been good, IMO. I enjoy the sunset dinner menu and the wine specials, but everything I have ordered has been to my liking. So far this week I have had the fried chicken and the New York steak. I don't normally like sauces on my steak, but I liked this one with mushrooms and onions. The steak was cooked perfectly medium-rare. La Casa del Zorro as a whole is very good with keeping their website updated with menus and specials, which I appreciate, as I like to select ahead of time. So thank you for that, La Casa del Zorro! The ambiance is very pleasant. I like to sit outside on the deck. Although it is getting chilly for outdoor dining now, they have heaters. Sometimes I have taken my dog with me to dinner on the deck and they are very accommodating of her, bringing a bowl of water, and an extra plate so I can share with her. The décor is cozy and "clubby" just what you would expect from a resort of this type. It reminds me of a country club dining experience. And the bar still looks great, although I haven't been in there for a few years. Maybe tomorrow! I did see an awesome-looking cocktail on the menu, featuring grapefruit. Set in a cozy, rustic adobe room this is a nice place for a quiet meal. Garden views make it a nice choice for breakfast. I had the Huevos Rancheros for breakfast and it was delicious! And I'm picky about my Huevos! The coffee is good and the service was friendly. I also tasted the Eggs Benedict with Hash Browns. Also, a very good meal to consider. For breakfast, I can confidently recommend this restaurant to anyone who appreciates a great start to their day :) read more

Beautiful atmosphere; we sat out on the lovey patio. Service was friendly and attentive. They had a nice assortment of cocktails, and the rolls in the bread basket were warm and delicious. I tried one of the two daily specials, the beef stroganoff, and unfortunately, it wasn't very good. Instead of tender strips of meat, there were just little pieces, and instead of wide egg noodles, it was thin spaghetti type noodles. A couple of my friends ordered the sea bass w/ risotto, and it was much better The salmon w/ cous cous looked really good, too. On our trip to Borrego Springs, we stopped in for lunch at 1pm on a Saturday. While we were somewhat promptly seated, as there only seemed to be about 5 other tables with parties, our food took about 45 minutes to arrive. We ordered two orders of the fish and chips and the club sandwich with a request for a meat substitution. Once our food finally arrived, our fish and chips were cold, as if they'd been on the line for awhile, and the club sandwich came with the wrong meat subbed in. I eventually flagged down a food runner and told them about the situation. The food runner offered to fix the sandwich, but we were hungry and did not want to wait another 45 minutes for another cold sandwich. We were super disappointed with the wait time and the food mistake, and would have been fine with both issues if we had been given a heads up that they were short staffed, couldn't do the substitution, and that the food would take a while. A few days later, I called and asked to speak with a manager, and they told me the manager was not in that day. I told them that I would have appreciated a heads up about the food taking a little while and the fact that they were obviously short staffed, but they said "they are not allowed to say that", which only added to my frustration. They transferred me to the manager's voicemail, and I left a message gently explaining the situation. They have yet to call me back. Overall an extremely disappointing experience with an inn I've stayed at numerous times before. read more

Caesar salad: 4 stars. The chopped crisp romaine encourages a classy eating experience. The cheese is creamy and rich. It's layered nicely with small airy croutons. The dressing is on the lighter side; tasty nonetheless. Deconstructed baked potatoes: 4.5 stars. great texture, good flavor, fresh bacon, rich cheese, the accouterments pair deliciously well. Can easily feed 6-10 people. Cocktail: 5 stars. one mimosa took me down. Lava Cake: 5 stars. No butter after taste! Has the texture of a flourless cake. The molten fudge does not cloy. It's coupled with vanilla ice cream and sweetened, but not candied, walnuts. Music to my heart. Service: 1M stars. Emmanuel and the hardworking staff catered to my hangry needs. Prompt, friendly, efficient, communicative and professional. I appreciate that the food is great and not at all like most resort restaurants -subpar. read more

Over the past year or so we have tried nearly every sit down restaurant in Borrego. This was our first time here. The atmosphere is very nice (we had to sit on the patio due to COVID, but there were plenty of space heaters-almost one per table). Actually, the patio was a nice setting for dinner around sunset. The inside of the restaurant/bar looks to be old school, I would like to try the inside next time just to get a good feel for the place. The food was good. Not great, but good. I had the ribs and they were tasty. Actually, it was called a half-rack, but my wife and I split it and it was plenty of food. Came with coleslaw and fries...They consider themselves an upscale restaurant ($28 for the ribs, fries and coleslaw), but I would disagree. Upscale would have paired the ribs with a potato of some sort, a better salad option and or a vegetable. We also had a salad ($10 for a house salad... a little steep for something not so fancy, but again plentiful). The drinks were strong and reasonably priced, so that was a plus in their favor. The service, for the most part, was indifferent. I was watching all servers and they all seemed to be on the same page; going through the motions. Overall, it was an okay experience. For upscale (pricing wise) there are better options in Borrego. If their pricing was scaled down a bit to put them a step ahead of the diner/family style restaurants and priced a bit better than the upscale restaurants, I think that they would be better served, but who am I to say. read more

We live in San Diego and did a 1 night stay in November, at La Casa del Zorro resort. The Butterfield Room is the onsite restaurant. We checked in early Sunday afternoon and were encouraged to make a reservation to get in for dinner (the room was not even half full). But on sat/sun we hear they get totally booked for dinner. The room is very pretty with a nice fireplace. Me and the Mr. both wore jeans and did not feel underdressed. Perhaps on weekends it's a bit more formal, being that it is probably one of, if not, the most, upscale restaurants for miles. The hostess was fantastic, she sat us near the fireplace and moved my chair so that I didn't face the wall (my hubby likes to sit facing out and people watch). Instead I was now facing the lovely fireplace and sitting adjacent to my husband, rather than across and staring at the wall/booth. Nice little touch on her part. My husband had the 8oz fillet mignon and said it was as good, if not better than, prime fillets from recent visits to Morton's and Ruth's Chris. And for $36, a better value. My $37 ribeye was cooked rare as requested, very flavorful, but also lots of muscle, a bit tough. Entrees include 2 sides, and they have lots of options. The glazed carrots were undercooked, but baked potato was good. Hubby had a nice glass of cab for only $7. Dessert was called Raspberry brûlée cheesecake. We asked for a description, and were told it had raspberry throughout and a raspberry bruleed topping. In reality it was regular cheesecake with a tart raspberry sauce. It was really tastey, and firm. Dense, like good NY cheesecake should be. Our waiter was MIA at times, but apologized/explained he also had to deliver room service meals to hotel guests, too. Thought that was a bit odd, maybe another waiter called out sick...? The staff was great, overall. And when the families with young kids playing outside near the restaurant got WAY too loud, our aforementioned hostess went outside and handled it like a pro. Bravo! read more

Not sure where to begin.... I am not sure if this is the same restaurant since there are no names on the menu to indicate that this would be the Butterfield Room. However, the images that are connected to the Yelp page would lead me to believe it's the same. This restaurant is located within the main lobby building of the La Casa Del Zorro Hotel in Borrego Springs. We were out here for a stay over the weekend and it's our first time to area. We planned on doing a little hiking and some golf on Sunday. What we did not realize until we arrived in town is that there are not many restaurant options in Borrego Springs. The options are pretty limited as most folks head out the BS to hike and camp so tourists are all self contained. Reminds me of old Palm Springs before Bob Hope and the celebrity boom. You will see the resemblance - give it a few years, few more hotels, and a few casinos you will not be able to tell the difference. Unfortunately, at this restaurant the food and service were both disappointing on this evening. We arrive at the restaurant and again, not sure if its still called the Butterfield Room or something else. However, not impressed by any means by the menu and its selections. We ultimately ordered something simple: Turkey melt and a Caesar Salad....Both again disappointing at best considering they were both $15 & $16 each. It took over 30 minutes for both items to come out of the kitchen and there was only 1 other party of three in the dining room when we sat down and ordered. They may have had an issue with the kitchen being understaffed or simply no one knew how to cook. The server rarely checked on us during the wait and ultimately, anything that came out would be disappointing but it was worse. The Turkey melt was cold...melt - should be hot and the salad was lack luster and looked like it was made by a child. Its not worth the wait or the money in my book. They may be going through an overhaul, but there needs to be a lot of changes to the service and quality of food considering its one of the few recommend restaurants in town. They have such an opportunity to capture the business from the folks who are staying at the hotel but at this rate they will all leave and eat elsewhere. At this time, I would recommend the hotel stay but I would have to say you should head up the street a few minutes and dine at Rams Hills Golf Course for lunch or dinner. We played golf there the next day and it was the food we had all weekend. read more

First review. Boom. If you're out in Borrego Springs doing some hiking, this is a good place to go for an evening dinner. The general restaurant is fairly fancy. Golf shirts and pleats seem to be the dress code. Although, if you are dressed in hiking boots and dust, they may urge you have a seat in the lounge, or outside. I'd recommend sitting outside anyhow. The nights are beautiful and calm, and the outdoor patio is nice. They have 2 menus. One for the lounge / bar and the other for the main general restaurant. The lounge menus is cheaper plates (burgers, finger foods etc.) I had the burger and it was decent. This may be the only dining option in Borrego Springs past 7pm, and it's a decent one. Our first time at the La Casa Zorro Resort, our in-laws invited us to dinner at the Fox Bistro. When we got there the place was pretty empty and we asked to be seated outside. We were told the outside tables were reserved and that we had to sit inside. We had a reservation, and were not asked if we wanted inside or outside when it was made. Things didn't get any better as we were served warm beers to start. The food was sketchy, the short ribs, mashed potatoes, and broccoli were cold, the shrimp scampi was tough, the risotto very salty. The server was nice, but not the best service, she asked how everything was as she was clearing the table. When we finished we noticed the majority of the patio tables had still not been seated, so we wondered why we couldn't have been seated there. My mother-in-law stopped and talked to the hostess Justina (who was also not nice about our patio request to begin with) on the way out and asked about why we weren't seated outside. She was indifferent about it, not very nice, and said she was only doing what her supervisor told her to do. Poor hospitality, poor customer service, bad experience from start to finish. Very nice atmosphere! Go here if you want a nice meal served with elegance in Borrego. We ordered steak and shrimp and seared scallops , waiter made sure everything was perfect. Ordered a nice bottle of wine and total was around 130$. Dress code here. And reservations required although they looked like there were many tables open. read more

We had a lovely brunch on the patio. Food and drinks great. Service very attentive. Our server made our afternoon very special not rushing us,but checking always at just the right time to make sure we were ok. Love the rose garden,this place is always well maintained and restrooms are nice and clean with cloth towels soap and lotion. All the staff is vert friendly. read more
