I started with a French onion soup. Kristie said it was on the sweeter side. She was right and it was very good. We had the MI version of surf and turf. Rib eye & Walleye CAB. The fish was pan seared to perfection, the rib eye was cooked excellent. The CAB sauce was very good and complimented the steak and fish very well. We got the sauce on the side. I went to the Fox Den restaurant with my wife and some neighborhood friends. I ordered the prime rib and my wife the spinach artichoke chicken. The prime rib was old and cold. The fat was as white as paper. The meat cold to the touch. I asked the waitress to have it warmed. When it returned it looked much better and was the right temperature and appearance. However, it was terrible. The meat tasted old and had a tinny taste to it. My wife absolutely enjoyed her chicken dish and we enjoyed out meal with friends. When I paid the bill I let the waitress know that the prime rib didn't improve and was terrible. She apologized and gave a small discount on the bill. Unfortunately, this is the second bad prime rib I have gotten at the Fox Den. I am not picky and just want consistency in a restaurant. For over $30 you have a consistent product or don't offer that item. Since you advertise it as a restaurant specialty you should really stand behind the quality a little better. Maybe offer to replace it with a fresh cut. Overall, I am sure we will go there again, just not as often. The food was random and had no flavor. It tasted like frozen food that was prepared incorrectly. Unfortunately there were no servers so we had to put the orders in ourselves and tip ourselves out at the end of the night. Nobody had any hats on so I felt really excluded wearing a cape and neckerchief. Like other reviewers said it isnlike a banquet hall with tables. Bery ope. With randome fox pictures and random things on the wall. The server was very personable and friendly. I had philly cheesesteak in Portobello mushroom cap with fries. The steak in mushroon was good and steak was tender. The fries however way salty. Hubby had the philly sliders which he enjoyed as well but again fries too salty. Overall we'd be back when in the area. read more

The ambience is exactly as all the other reviews noted, like a banquet hall so we expected that. We were hoping to get a good meal that wasn't bar food. Unfortunately, we were not impressed. I had the walleye pan fried with sautéed spinach and my husband had the perch fried with mashed potatoes and we both had French onion soup. The seasoning on the walleye was bland while the spinach was okay. The perch was good. All in all, it wasn't horrible but I wouldn't recommend it. Don't be turned off by the pole building look of this place. This is a hidden gem- efficiently run by a very friendly owner. We started with an onion ring appetizer. These babies are huge! Big juicy rings hidden in a crunchy batter that is perfection. The hubs had fish and I had a chicken and pasta dish- both were so delicious. The price is just right and the portions are enough that you can take some home. Give this place a chance- you'll be glad you did. read more

What a hidden gem! We visit Houghton Lake annually for Tip Up Town. We wanted to try something different for a change, bar food can get old after a few days. We ordered the spinach dip for an appetizer, I wish it was a larger portion, it is so yummy, the chips they serve with it are warm. For dinner we all ordered Prime Rib, this was the BEST prime rib I have ever had. I always like horseradish and or auju. This prime rib is so flavorful you need nothing with it! The food was pretty good. Service was good. I thought it was lacking in ambiance. I would go back again, but not sure I'd rush to go back. We don't eat out often. It's a bit tight on the purse strings over the last year, and I just thought it was a bit pricey. The ambiance being a very open concept doesn't lend itself to a celebration for a birthday or anniversary. If the ambiance was more warm and cozy, I think more people to go there. Second visit. Donna is a fantastic server/bartender. Like someone else said, ignore the pole barn look. The food and staff are fantastic. We have had the carbonara, spinach smothered chicken and shrimp kabobs, all fantastic. Salads are fresh and yummy. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed! read more

Terrible service and rude staff, went in there visiting from out of town to try and enjoy a meal, food was brought out not to our liking so I asked for them to take it back and cook it a little more, the waitress was rude and tried to tell us we were "wrong" and to "order it this way next time if that's how you want it" no big deal until we hear the waitress mocking us and laughing to her co workers about us wanting it cooked more. When we finally received the food back the same coworker came back around to rudely ask if it's better then stand there and try and "teach us" how to order a steak, this same waitress had zero urgency and sat around talking to her co workers in an almost empty restaurant taking 10+ minutes to close out our check while standing there doing nothing, it's a very open empty restaurant you can hear and see everything the wait staff does especially when sitting right by there, staff also did not ever bring out the included and ordered salad with the meal and wrote up our bill incorrectly staff needs a serious crash course in customer service and respect. The food is decent, but our waitress scammed us and our friends by charging an extra tip when she ran our cards. The amount charged was not what our bill came to. We had already left a generous tip on the table but I guess she felt she deserved more-$13 total tip on 2 salads, 2 8pc wings and two beers! Never going back even though the manager reimbursed us for the overcharge! At 6:00, there were only 6 persons at our table, and 4 others seated elsewhere. No excuses- terrible! read more

We decided to give this place a try since it was new and there aren't a lot of options in the Houghton Lake area. I ordered a ribeye medium rare and it came out literally room temperature and uncooked except for being slightly brown on the outside. I asked the manager/owner if they could cook the steak, he took the steak back and came back 20 minutes later to tell me they dropped the steak on the floor and had to put a new one down. I get the new one another 15 minutes later and it's also raw. I asked him to take it back and have them cook it, he apologizes and tells me our meals are on the house. They finally get the steak right as far as temp / color goes and it's tough as hell. I eat the steak at this point just wanting to get out of there. I asked for a Caesar salad and I received vinegar and oil and the salad was so drenched in oil that it was running off the lettuce, disgusting. We go to pay and he doesn't comp us our meal but instead just gives me half off my steak. After all that i check my credit card statement and they billed me twice for the same meal. I'm disputing the charge but I wouldn't take my dog back to this rat hole. read more

Our first time here. Went for dinner with a friend and wasn't disappointed. The place was empty, but the service was great and the manager was very friendly. I ordered chicken fettuccine alfredo and you get a ton of food- including salad and bread (good Italian bread with oil and parm) and my friend got bbq chicken kabobs which were good. Prices were very reasonable and portions were substantial. Decor is a little odd, but all in all a good addition to Houghton Lake's dining scene. read more

Four of us had dinner, all four meals were very good! Chicken Alfredo, Chicken Quesadilla, Perch and Chicken with green beans. All portions were excellent, salads were plentiful and fresh. It was ok. . . . It took a really long time to get our food but they did get a big rush all at once. Food came out kind of cold. The prime rib wasn't really tender and all I could taste was Worcestershire sauce. Fries were excellent though! Fried ice cream wasn't what we were expecting as we have gotten it at other places. My family and I ate here for the first time after reading the reviews. We sat outside and it was a perfect laid back atmosphere for my 2 boys to run around without disturbing anyone. The restaurant also offers a gymnasium and outdoor games for the boys to run around and play while we waited for our food. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The manager introduced himself and was very personable. He was very attentive to make sure we were comfortable. The food was awesome! I had a Pina Colada made with real pineapple and also the pulled pork sandwich. My husband had the sirloin steak and mashed garlic red potatoes. It was cooked perfectly and tasted very flavorful! Terrible. I've never walked out of a restaurant before. My family and I visited this restaurant and the waitress was very clearly under the influence of either drugs or alcohol. She was slurring her words and dropped the first set of drinks. Half of our party did not get drink orders taken. After placing our food orders, four orders came out as completely different meals. Only one was sent back as it had spicy sauce and couldn't be eaten by one of our party. When the manager came out he accused us of threatening his longest working waitress and asked us to leave. We did not ever raise our voice or say anything to the waitress but merely wanted to let the proprietor know that his employee was hurting his business. Will obviously not be going back. read more
