Let me start by saying that we loved the atmosphere in here and enjoyed the bar area. The bar service was good and the dirty martinis were very good as well. Dinner was a different story. My wife ordered the Prime Rib and I ordered the Scallops. Again the service was very good, but the salad bar greens were wilted. The Prime Rib was OK, but the tiny Scallops were awful. The presentation in a small bowl with overcooked green peppers and onions was laughable. They were soggy as well, the waitress took them back to have them thrown on the grill, but they were brown at least but dry. Glad I ordered 1/2 order, but for 23.00 it was a joke. If I am going to pay high prices, I expect quality food. Don't think I would do it again. The only reason I give it 3 stars is that the service was very good. read more

Congrats to the Freighthouse staff on a New Year's Eve well done! We got to the restaurant around 5:00 and as expected, there was a huge number of people waiting in the lobby and the bar was packed. We were lucky to grab two seats at the bar to enjoy a few drinks while waiting for dinner. We had over an hour wait time but were then seated in the main dining room next to the front windows. Our waiter was wonderful and funny! We started with scallops, ventured to the salad bar and without much of a wait our entrees were delivered. As usual the steaks & crab were delicious! I was at the Freighthouse Restaurant last Friday with a group of friends for a birthday celebration and my meal was absolutely awful! I order the filet mignon medium-well done. I got a steak that was burnt on the outside and was red (not pink) on the inside. I only ate a few bites at the restaurant and I took the remainder home and finished cooking it a couple nights later. I would have sent it back but I figured by the time I would get it back from the kitchen everyone else would have been done with their meal. My baked potato was sooooooooooooo small and it was totally dried out. I left the restaurant hungry! I'm in my 50's so over the years I have been out to eat probably hundreds of times and my meal at the Freighthouse was the worst I ever had at any restaurant. I will never go back again! I was excited to have fish since their menu states they fly in fresh fish daily, and it's difficult to get good, fresh fish in the Midwest. The fish was overcooked & very dry. Love, love, love the Freight House. Atmosphere is spot on, food is delicious, excellent salad bar. We usually order the crab legs and they are perfect. This is the perfect place for romance and fun. Go on a weekend to hear live music. They always have a fresh fish selection and seasonal vegetables. I would agree with other comments that the attire is more casual than I would like for a "nice" dinner out. However, this is not enough to keep me away. We have also eaten at the Waterfront and Piggy's, both of which I feel were way overpriced for the lack of service and food quality. Freight House can't be beat! read more

Been here many times. The atmosphere is good although can sound a bit like a warehouse on weekends. Service is very good with the exception of a waiter stopping me at the door angry about no tip...He forgot to look at the stack of cash on the table first. Salad bar is great as is the seafood. This place can be hit or miss. They can make a good key lime martini, which I always appreciate, and they have a vegetarian platter that is huge if only steamed vegetables... The FreightHouse Restaurant is consistently my favorite restaurant in La Crosse. Fantastic food, amazing wine, excellent service, and warm and welcoming atmosphere...every single time you dine at the FreightHouse! I love the mix in age and genre of customers. The live summer concerts are such a great, and complimentary, event on Thursdays. You can have the Prime Rib and Chicken Teriyaki sandwiches while dining outside, or go inside and enjoy fresh seafood or the best filets around. My personal splurge meal is grilled lobster and marinated filet teriyaki. My go-to meal during the work week is salmon. Whichever you choose, you will be pleased with your choice. If you are new to La Crosse, or visiting, and haven't tried the FreightHouse yet, do so tonight. read more

I have been a regular here for 20+ years and had the most disappointing meal I've ever had here.I ordered the prime rib and found it to be the most awful pc of meat I have ever been served.By the time I removed the fat and gristle my undercooked meat amounted to about 1/4 of what I was served.I cant believe they even brought it out.I was with a large group and did not want to make a big deal about it.The service continues to be good with polite helpful staff,but that does not make up for poor quality meat.I hope they get this fixed.I will certainly give them another try but this need to be fixed read more

The meat cuts are very good. However, the taste was fairly bland. We had Prime Rib and T-Bone Steak which are some of my favorite cuts of meat. It actually tasted better after I reheated it at home and added a small amount of seasoning salt. The potatoes, salad bar and drinks were good (not exceptional). We take our 5 children there when we visite our college student. Recently our high school senior was there for FBLA contest. He was excited to take his friend there after the day's competition and he was turned away when they got there at 9. They said the kitchen was closed. However, the place is open until 10. My biggest beef is with this restaurant was the initial impression. We had a wait for our table, which we had no problem with, due to the fact that they don't accept reservations. we went to the bar..., and this is my biggest complaint... those bartenders need to SERIOUSLY GET OVER THEMSELVES.. .. I have never been treated more rudely by any bartender, I got my drink, it was ok, my husband asked for olives in his drink and that was ignored.There was a total absence of humanity ... This totally put a damper on my nite, there were like 4 guys back there. and they would rather rearrange bottles and shine glasses then interact with the people they are so expecting TIPS from...??? TIPS... To Ensure Proper Service ... sorry, I used to do your job and you fail at it miserably!!!!!!! Once seated for dinner, our service was superb, we ordered a bottle of wine which arrived promptly and served nicely, The rest of this not so stellar review has to do with the meal. I don't care to serve myself when I am paying for a meal, so I ordered the house salad. It would have been REALLY good had it not been overdressed, the vinegrette overpowered the rest of the flavors. I ordered the Prime Rib and Shrimp, the beef arrived lukewarm at best, but the shrimp were warm,,, unfortunate, because they were overcooked and rubbery. My husband ordered the Prime and Scallops.... we do NOT recommend the scallops, that is all I am going to say.... if you feel you need to try these and dispute me...that is your sad luck. Was so very excited about going because of all the talk we heard. The interior was stunning. Nice atmosphere. Felt rushed to order even after I told her it was our first time here and our anniversary. We just wanted to sit a bit, have a drink and take it all in. Salad bar is was not overly choicy but nice enough to make a good salad. I ordered the blackened garlic sundried tomato filet migon which was the special with rice. The steak was well-done, no flavor and chewed like leather. I had ordered medium rare. My rice also had no flavor, very dry, fell off my fork, had to use my spoon and the one green pepper that was in it was very mushy. Definitely was leftover from days prior. Our waiter was very polite and graciously took my steak back and did indeed return with a medium rare one. Good but took only a few bites because my husband was finished with his meal and had lost my appetite. My husband ordered the Prime Rib w/Crab Legs and Baked Potato. He ordered his prime medium. His plate arrived literally in a pool of blood. The crab lay in it and he was only able to eat down about half way in his baked potato because the blood had soaked in so badly. The crab was a complete misery for him. Would not come out of the shell with the little fork even after he cracked it the entire length. So while I was sitting there with nothing while they were redoing my steak I thought I would help him. I actually split it open and tried with my BUTTER KNIFE to scrape the crab of the shell. It was stuck terribly. By the time I was able to the some off, it was shredded in tiny pieces and cold. He took only one bite of his prime. It was RARE and could not eat it. We asked for to go boxes. He brought us a piece of grasshopper pie free because it was our anniversary. My husband literally devoured it. He was so hungry. He had had only a few mouthfuls of his $53.99 plate of food. The thing that disappointed me the most that I have no problem paying for those prices but you better get top end, high quality, melt in your mouth food! College kids in the kitchen do not work. Hire a real chef and pay him well like you charge your customers. Most of $111.99 food like the crab leg, old rice and blood soaked potato went to our farm cats when we got home. Will try to do something with meat tonight. I googled way crab sticks to the shell. It's either overcooked, not fresh, pre-frozen or made the day before and warmed up. Just like my rice. Uncalled for! We went on Wednesday night, less croweded, no waiting. Obviously they only cook fresh on the weekends and warm up leftovers during the week. We had another couple next to us whom refused their crab and did not pay. The waiter even tried to DIG out the crab for her. Tiny shred on your crab fork were all you got. He asked he she wanted a different batch and she refused. I don't blame her. All I'm saying is you pay the price and should have top of line! We will not be going back. Sorry. read more
