7/25/16 The restaurant is beautiful. I love the décor and the building. A young woman came to take our drink order and my husband asked what was on tap. She had to go into the bar to get him a list. They had a massive wine list so evidently beer isn't a top seller. (Oops!) I ordered a soft drink and a refill and I was charged for the refill! When people drop $40 on a steak, give them a second Diet Coke! They have no menu for children and if you have a toddler who doesn't eat much, ordering them a full sized entrée here would get pretty spendy. Luckily our little guy was really happy eating the bread and sharing my potato. They have a great salad bar and the bread was divine. The steaks were good. When we left, my husband asked me what I thought and I said that I wished I'd ordered something bigger because the steak seemed small for the size I ordered (I think I ordered an eight ounce). He said he was thinking the same thing! He ordered either a 12 or 14-ounce and he thought it looked really small, too. It was filling, don't get me wrong, but the prices are high so we're hoping to pay for what we ordered and both steaks fell a little short of that. If you've got little ones, I would recommend getting a sitter and enjoying a nice adult night out. read more

This place is always a go to for excellent prime rib and seafood. The portions you get are humongous (they give you more then the size it says it is for sure). The salad bar is always good, and the grasshopper pie is a must. This trip we decided to also try a steak, so got the 20oz porterhouse. Although it was good, it was really a T-bone as the filet just was not that big at all. So you want excellent prime rib or seafood, make the trip (we drive 70 miles one way to go!) you won't be disappointed. Also live music in the bar/lounge/waiting area some nights also. read more

Been here twice. First time, I only had appetizers. The spinach artichoke dip was the best thing one I had. The second time, I had the best King crab legs I've ever had! The waiter will crack them for you if you request it. My boyfriend loved the old fashioned and I had a strawberry daiquiri and thought it was ok. I'm planning to go back soon! read more

This was disappointing at best. Service was great. Beer selection was good. I ordered the sirloin scallop combination. The sirloin was the absolute toughest piece of meat I have had to attempt to chew. In the middle was a large piece of grizzle. The scallops consisted of r or tomalley scallops swimming in I don't know what. The menu claimed white wine. They were nestled a bed of thinly sliced green pepper. AWESOME salad bar...fantastic Prime Rib and Lobster!! Worth the money.

We are new to the area and did not know what to expect, but we really enjoyed this restaurant. We loved the salad bar idea, being able to build your own salad. The prime rib may have been a little too pink for medium rare, but it was one of the best steaks I have ever had, as well as the biggest (it covered the whole plate!). Thus, with what you get for the money, I think it is money well spent. read more

My visit pertains to Saturday, April 21st around 5pm. It was a very busy day, considering multiple events in town, but our group had heard great things about The Freighthouse and decided we'd try it out regardless of wait time. We were told the wait would be an hour, which was perfectly fine considering we wanted to have a few drinks and catch up anyways. When we were finally able to get a seat at the bar I ordered a Jim Beam and Coke. After a few sips in, I realized the drink was not Jim Beam, and I let one of bartenders know the wrong drink was made, that it was okay not a big deal as mistakes happen (very noisy as well), but I would just take a beer instead. The bartender poured the new beer, however, it was about 99% foam. He sort of slammed the glass down onto the bar in front of me. It was very rude to say the least, and everyone around me saw the situation happen. This alone had been bad enough, but I saw the bartenders using their hands to scoop drink garnish out of the jars. THEIR HANDS! Which they use to collect money, etc. Our wait was over an hour, but by that point we just had enough and left. Cant speak on behalf of the food, but if the cooks were anything like the bartenders, I'm happy without it. read more

My husband and I love to eat out and have tried most restaurants in the LaCrosse area, and the Freight House is by far the best. Being in the retail meat business, we find their steaks and seafood to be of the finest quality, seasoned and cooked perfectly. The staff has always been courteous and helpful. Always will be my favorite. When my husband and I go, we don't even look at the menu, King Crab every time. Salad bar is always wonderful and wait staff always fabulous. The only thing I can say is that their cocktail waitresses could step it up a bit. Beautiful young girls, I get it, but some of them aren't the brightest; Several times our drink orders have been screwed up, one time we didn't even get our appetizer. The girl said, "Sorry I just forgot. We are really busy." Either way, we can handle that here and there cause the food and wait staff in the dinning room are outstanding. read more

We were there on 4/7/20, only in the area for 1 night. We were seated on the patio/porch. We sat there for 15 minutes before a server came to our table. The next 2 tables that were seated after us were waited on before us. My daughter ordered a soda and her glass was dirty inside, it had chunks in it. My husband ordered the special salad of the evening and it came with black, fuzzy moldy strawberries. His silverware was dirty as well. There were chunks of food stuck to them. My husband ordered the halibut and it came with black crunchy grill waste on it. No, he didn't order it blackened. With all of these issues, we never saw manager. When we were done our server disappeared again. We sat there for at least 15-20 minutes waiting. My husband got up and went to look for our server cuz by this time we were done. No discount on the bill, nor a visit with the manager. Mark this one off the list for us! read more

This place has amazing food. The steak is terrific, but you won't go wrong if you order fish. Everything is fresh and tasty. The staff are friendly and personable. They are attentive, but not annoying; your needs are met, but then your meal & company of friends can be enjoyed without unnecessary interruptions. It's a good place for a business / dinner meeting. There was nothing I ordered that I did not love. That said, I will order something different next time as I have confidence that everything on the menu is 5 Star. read more

Used to be my favorite restaurant in town, the prime rib and crab is always excellent. The salad bar always makes me happy too, everything is always really fresh there and just pops. However it's just not exciting anymore, their menu doesn't really change, except the prices the crab has gotten significantly more expensive over the last couple years. The competition in La Crosse has gotten a lot better while TFH has remained stuck in 1998. It's still good, but if I'm going to drop 130 bucks on dinner with my wife, these days, I'm going elsewhere. read more

Just went to the Freight House for sons college graduation. This place is awesome. The food is probably the best we have had in a long time. Had seven people for dinner and had everything from steak, prime rib, crab legs, lobsters. there was not a complaint to be heard. The food was prepared perfectly and had wonderful flavor. We were seated almost immediately and the server Levi was great, very knowledgable about the food and menu and was very patient and helpful. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone for any occasion. Would visit this restaurant again if in the area. No complaints.. read more

Absolutely horrible! Went for our anniversary and the only good thing about our meal was, our waitress was nice. Started with some girl (wearing a romper) asked us if we wanted drinks (no clue she worked there) then she never came back. Ordered the prime rib and scallops and the scallops were in done sort of pepper mushroom pickle brine (nasty) and the prime rib at least 2" thick and was very rubbery. Husband ordered halibut and it was fishy tasting. Bill was $100 and it was not worth $10...will be along time before we go there again. read more

It was supposed to be a special anniversary dinner out but it turned out to be the worst in 42 years.. The service was excellent,each waiter attendant, friendly and efficient. The steaks were terrible with no flavor in the meat and luckily I was able to salt and pepper mine to add some flavor. My asparagus was simply done al dente which was great but it had absolutely no flavor and even after I added salt and pepper as well as some butter to give it some flavor it was flavorless. The salad bar was fresh, as I expected, but nothing special. To top it off the final price was exorhorbitant. I knew from first checking reviews it would be but I didn't expect the food to be so tasteless and such poor quality. We were surprised that the overpriced halibut special was not available after only one hour of being open.. That's the last time I will be eating there. I'm glad I didn't bring guests. read more

I have been in town for work quite a bit over last few months and have tried almost every place in downtown area. The Freight House came highly recommended, but fell short. We had a group of 12 and every steak was overdone. I also had their scallops which were I guess odd. In some kind of green pepper sauce which I did not care for. Certainly not worth the price. Some of the worst service in La Crosse. If you have less than 4 people in your party, expect to be ignored. Salad bar has served brown lettuce on all 4 occasions that I've visited. Wine and bar selection are superb. Live entertainment most Friday and Saturday nights in the bar area. Outdoor seating is nice--but you will definitely be fetching your own drinks if you sit outside. Make reservations for peak hours or else you'll be waiting for a seat all night. Steaks are good, but as with most steakhouses, they undercook everything. When a place charges this much for food, I expect it to be top notch. It's not bad here, but the prices are out of proportion to the quality of food and service. read more

My husband, father and I ate here while we were on a birthday weekend for my dad. It was a Friday night earlier this fall, so it was busy. All staff was hopping. We had about a 30 minute wait, but didn't mind at all. We grabbed a table in the beautiful bar and enjoyed listening to the live music. The bartender gave an excellent wine recommendation, even my two beer drinkers had a glass. Once we were seated for dinner we couldn't decide what we wanted, so we each ordered and shared. We had the lobster, crab legs and porterhouse. Our waiter was very accommodating to our requests and brought birthday dessert out for us as well. I am in LaCrosse at least once a year and this has been a must each year. It is money well spent in a friendly atmosphere. read more

Let me start by saying that we loved the atmosphere in here and enjoyed the bar area. The bar service was good and the dirty martinis were very good as well. Dinner was a different story. My wife ordered the Prime Rib and I ordered the Scallops. Again the service was very good, but the salad bar greens were wilted. The Prime Rib was OK, but the tiny Scallops were awful. The presentation in a small bowl with overcooked green peppers and onions was laughable. They were soggy as well, the waitress took them back to have them thrown on the grill, but they were brown at least but dry. Glad I ordered 1/2 order, but for 23.00 it was a joke. If I am going to pay high prices, I expect quality food. Don't think I would do it again. The only reason I give it 3 stars is that the service was very good. read more

The Freight House is not very good, expensive, and the decor is oppressively dark/lodge like. The service was great. The attention by the server was the only good thing about dinner. The bread was dry. The salad bar at Pizza Hut has more options than this one. The steak was completely unseasoned and underdone. The baked potato wasn't screwed up but it clearly was baked dry and unseasoned. The bacon and sour cream on the potato was the best part of the meal. read more

Congrats to the Freighthouse staff on a New Year's Eve well done! We got to the restaurant around 5:00 and as expected, there was a huge number of people waiting in the lobby and the bar was packed. We were lucky to grab two seats at the bar to enjoy a few drinks while waiting for dinner. We had over an hour wait time but were then seated in the main dining room next to the front windows. Our waiter was wonderful and funny! We started with scallops, ventured to the salad bar and without much of a wait our entrees were delivered. As usual the steaks & crab were delicious!
